23 minutes. reggie aqui jobina. >> thank you. new this morning, the biden administration has just confirmed a meeting we've been expecting to happen for a couple of weeks. president biden and chinese president xi jinping will meet during the apec summit in san francisco next week. an announcement overnight. the biden administration calling it a high stakes meeting to ensure channels of communication are open. it will be their second in-person meeting since mr. biden became president. the two leaders are expected to talk about the russia-ukraine war, the israel-hamas conflict, iran and restoring military to military lines of communication. president biden is set to arrive in san francisco tuesday. the exact timing and other logistical details of his meeting with xi have not been formally announced. >> leaders from 21 world economies will be in san francisco for apec, and that means a lot of extra security. city state and federal agencies are working together to keep everyone safe. during the summit , and much of that work will be happening at the city's newly activated emergency operations

center. that's where abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live this morning. hi, gloria . >> good morning, kumasi mayor london breed says this will be the place where many city agencies will be getting information and in real time they'll be able to communicate that information with the public and also respond as quickly as possible. san francisco leaders gathering yesterday to announce a launch of their emergency operations center for apec, the global economic summit is expected to draw some 20,000 people, including world leaders and their entourages. there are already zones with heightened security outlined around moscone center, nob hill and along the embarcadero and at the legion of honor for various events. but these will impact your ability to move around the city. san francisco police and emts are expected to be out in full force next week to respond to any emergency that may come up. the police chief with this plea, please be patient. >> please allow time, extra time

organized user shared this video of the event. people urged karna to support a house resolution calling for a cease fire in the conflict zone. khanna addressed the protests during an interview last night on cnn. >> i've never seen this kind of mobilization, even since the iraq war. i mean, this is there are people out on the street and they're upset with what they're seeing on television. they're upset with what they saw with the israelis who were killed. they're upset with the hostages and they're upset with the palestinian children who are being killed. it's an emotional issue, khanna said he spoke with protesters at his santa clara office, expressing his desire to see civilians protected. >> he also said hamas has to be held accountable. santa clara county sheriff's detectives are hoping that you can help them track down a man accused of running down a student at stanford. the incident is considered a hate crime. so here's a look at the sketch released by investigators. the person described as a white man in his mid 20s with prescription glasses. deputies say the man

shouted racial motivated things at wahab amiri before running him over last friday. abc7 news spoke to someone who knows the victim personally who did not want to be identified. >> he's recovering. he's in good spirits. i went and saw him in the hospital. he was in a lot of pain physically, he says. >> amir recognized the suspect as someone who has antagonized people during protest. but authorities say the man was driving a black toyota suv. that likely has front end damage from the crash. >> schools in sonoma will be back in session this morning after several went into lockdown yesterday. officials at sonoma valley high school and creekside high school say a credible threat was made. the two schools share a campus. an email was sent claiming one of the students had a weapon nearby. adele harrison middle school and prestwood elementary also went into lockdown. out of an abundance of caution because of how close they are to those two high schools. >> and efforts underway to keep a former san jose police officer

from serving in law enforcement again. mark mcnamara shot a man while on duty last year and is now under scrutiny for sending racist text messages. he resigned after an internal investigation uncovered the messages. groups like the naacp san jose branch say his resignation is not enough. >> we want to him to be decertified so that he can't just go around the corner to another city. >> police chief anthony mata said the department is working to ensure mcnamara will be decertified. the santa clara district attorney is also reviewing cases involving mcnamara that includes a controversial shooting in downtown san jose when he shot keon green, who suffered major injuries. green said he took a gun from someone who was in a fight inside a restaurant and was heading outside to get help when he was shot. surveillance video shows green holding the gun as he was backing out of the restaurant. but let's take a look at our friday morning

for san francisco last month. the panel is expected to address the barriers preventing pilots from reporting mental health issues. the committee members include medical experts and representatives from aviation and labor. pilots are required to report certain mental health conditions to medical examiners who then determine their ability to fly. >> employees with san francisco unified school district have ratified a new contract. the union says the contract, passed with an 86% yes vote with more than 3800 employees approving the deal. union officials say it's the largest membership vote in recent history. the new contract covers teachers pair professionals, nurses, counselors and psychologists. >> kaiser workers are also calling for an end to strikes. union members voted to ratify the new contract yesterday. there have been seven months of negotiate sessions in a three day strike by 75,000 workers in october, the largest health care strike in us history. that new contract includes 21% wage increases over the next four years and commitments to addressing staff shortages in

the south bay. >> it is going to be a busy time for second harvest food bank this holiday season and they're now rallying for the community support volunteer hours for the silicon valley food bank. packed around 30,000 pounds of food yesterday. that is enough food to feed roughly 960 families or more than 3400 people on average. they're helping to feed about 500,000 people a month. the program has outpaced their financial donations this year, and they're now asking for community members to donate their time or money. >> if you do come in and volunteer, please, like get the word out. tell everybody what a great experience it was and tell your neighbors, friends, everybody to also chip in. >> currently, 1 in 6 people in silicon valley is turning to the food bank for food assistance. >> it's about time to get started on your holiday shopping. and a south bay city is getting in the spirit. san jose is set to launch its yearly holiday shopping campaign on shop local sj and it's going to

san francisco police and emts are expected to be out in full force next week to respond to any emergency that may come up. >> the fire department is upping its staff and the police chief is asking people to be patient to allow extra time in their daily routines and also report anything suspicious if you see it, if you want updates on apec activities, you can call 311 and that includes any traffic disruptions. live in san francisco, gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> well, let's get into those traffic disruptions. so i already mentioned it before, but just to repeat again, because we can't do it enough, there are a couple of major security zones. so one of them is in and around the moscone center. the other is on nob hill, where a lot of the dignitaries will be staying. there are zones along the embarcadero and the legion of honor where they're going to be events next week. jobina is here with a closer look at how this is going to impact all of us. >> yes, thank you, reggie. >> so we're going to zoom into

the area around yerba buena gardens and also the moscone center, because it's essentially going to be like a fortress in the city. so where you see all the red, those are the road closures. so you can't go there. the green is going to be for local traffic, but that does not mean that every thing can get through because you're not going to be able to have, say, rideshare available through that area. also, food delivery won't be an option through those areas because there will still be some screening as well. now, let's get into the bay bridge, because when this announcement was made, people went a little nuts hearing that you were going to be down to lanes. so that means one eastbound lane, one westbound lane, and that's for four days. so when we zoom in a little closer to that, you can see the start date is going to be tuesday the 14th at 5 a.m. and then it will not reopen open until the 17th. and that's not going to be until 9:00 pm. you're also going to have some off ramps impacted as well there. so you can see there at the bottom, that's going to be an issue. so the big note here is that if you can work from home, that's what our messaging is going to continue to be. all

eventually the trees will be planted in the tenderloin. soma and bayview neighborhoods. this new nursery is part of the governor's $1.2 billion clean california program. newsom says the three the tree nursery took months of conversation, but he hopes the new nursery grabs apec leaders attention. >> i know folks say, oh, they're just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming into town. that's true because it's true. >> not that's true because it's true. well he said it. >> he admitted it. so it's happening. >> it's happening. the governor says money from the clean california program has also been used by caltrans to clear more than 3000 encampment across the state since 2021. now to the latest round of tech layoffs. several tech companies announced additional staff reductions this week, according to the chronicle , mountain view based google came out with its fourth round of cuts since september. a google spokesperson says the newest cuts are within its users

and products team. social media company snap is laying off nearly 20 product managers. and reuters reports amazon is downsizing its music division globally. it's not known how many people will be affected by that. now housing website zillow is out with another round of layoffs, according to real estate news, it cut nearly two dozen workers across multiple teams. that does make up less than 1% of its workforce. some contracted workers for crews are also being let go. they're responsive for duties like cleaning, charging and maintaining the robotaxi fleet. the layoffs come a day after the autonomous vehicle company announced a fleet wide software recall, according to the chronicle, the move doesn't impact full time workers directly employed by crews. it's not known how many people are being affected by the cuts now to safety concerns in the sky ahead of the holiday season. >> a top federal safety official is voicing concerns about undersea staffing and industry, putting airline passengers at

risk. so jobina, how is this related to these close calls we've been hearing about? >> yes, reggie, so the ntsb told senators a shortage of air traffic controllers is leading to fatigue and distraction in pilots. this is likely playing a role in the growing list of planes, almost colliding with other planes during takeoff and landing. the faa identified 23 close calls in the last year, multiple incidents are linked to mistakes by air traffic controllers. >> it only takes one missed warning to become a tragedy. one incorrect response to destroy public confidence in a system that has been built over decades . >> the union president says schedules that include mandatory overtime, am routine, six day workweek and ten hour shifts. the faa is forming a committee to examine mental health among pilots after an off duty alaska airlines pilot allegedly tried to crash a plane on its way to
