market in chinatown, drawing hundreds. as we welcome world leaders and ceos to the bay area. good morning to you. it is saturday, november 11th. i'm gloria rodriguez and, of course, happy veterans day. before we get to everything apec. meteorologist drew tuma is here with us on this saturday morning. and you know, a lot of people, as we've been talking about, are coming into town for apec. it's not like they're going to have the perfect weather this weekend. >> they really are. they're coming in here. sunshine mild temperatures today and tomorrow outside this morning. here's a nice view from the mt. tam cam pointed towards the city. you can see the embarcadero all lit up. air quality wise, you're good to go today, tomorrow through the week ahead. it is good aqi, no matter where you are around the region, temperatures right now, some of our coldest areas beginning in the low 40s. so certainly that light jacket, your best friend the next couple of hours, but you don't need it later on today as future weather shows you warm up nicely. by 11 a.m, we're well into the 60s under sunny skies. and later on this afternoon, we'll go into the low 70s in

some of our warmer spots. so for veterans day, it's looking great. mostly sunny, 68 in the city, 69 in oakland, 73. in san jose. but we do have some wet weather ahead in the seven day forecast that could affect some events at apec. we'll talk about that. gloria, coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you so much, drew. the apec summit in san francisco begins today. the eyes of the world will be turning to the bay area and the city says it is ready. abc7 news reporter tim johns talks to business owners in chinatown who say apec means opportunity. >> excitement on the streets of san francisco's chinatown. >> it's like a dragon dancers going on over there. there's a lot of good food and just really high energy. >> on friday night, hundreds came out for a new night market. the market is meant to be one of the unofficial starts to the highly anticipated apec summit, the biggest international event in the city in decades. the energy here in chinatown is absolutely palpable tonight. and organizers tell me this is exactly what they want to see

throughout the entirety of the apec summit. as many as 30,000 people from around the pacific rim are expected to come to san francisco next week in chinatown. they're hoping many of them will make a stop in this historic neighborhood. >> a lot of small businesses already. so welcome. anyone any visitor, anybody from outside of , you know, come and enjoy the food and enjoy the gifts. >> and it's not just chinatown that's getting ready around san francisco. local leaders have been organizing for weeks, cleaning city streets, setting up road barriers and planning events for the influx of visitors at fisherman's wharf, the ferris wheel that once stood at golden gate park reopened friday. also just in time for apec. >> i think that it's going to bring a lot of people down here so that they can see a great aerial view of how beautiful the city is. >> the city's famous restaurant week also extended keen to try and cash in and showcase some of the best in bay area cuisine. >> and we did that because the city had, you know, said, hey, it'd be great to extend this and

have awesome offerings throughout the city and we have the most restaurants ever with the entire world watching. >> the apec summit is being viewed as a way for san francisco to help fight back against some of the negative pr post-pandemic. and after months of preparation, the city says it's ready to shine. >> welcome to san francisco, chinatown. welcome to a world class city, san francisco in chinatown, tim johns, abc seven news. >> apec is going to have a big impact on traffic in san francisco. for some more than others, it might be more of an issue for those who are trying to navigate around all of the various closures. so here's what you need to know. muni announced it is no longer able to serve stops in these so-called exclusion zones. those are the security zones set by the secret service, mostly near moscone center. sfmta was not planning to make any changes to public transit until monday, but that has changed. abc7 traffic reporter jobina fortson tells us what else you can expect. >> the moscone center is basically going to be like a

fortress in the city. so you see this red section in the middle that's where all the road closures are. the green is going to be open to local traffic, but there will still be some security checks there. and also no ride shares, no food delivery through that section. that'll all be on the outside of the perimeter. now i know a lot of people were panicking when they heard about the changes to the bay bridge down one lane in the eastbound and westbound direction. so that's going to start on tuesday november 14th at 5 a.m. that will not all reopen in until 9 p.m. on friday, november 17th. and then we have the off ramps closed as well. so that's going to be fifth street and fourth street through that same timeframe. okay. now let's get into muni. all of these red dots. yes these are all of the impacts to muni, each of those lines. so too many to mention here on camera. so what you're going to want to do is make sure to check the schedules online. we also have information for you on abc7 news.com. so our overarching

both countries. as these diplomatic talks could help lay the groundwork for when president joe biden and chinese president xi jinping meet next week, the next up for secretary yellen will be the apec finance ministers conference on sunday and monday, they will discuss trade and investment in the region in the east bay community activists will rally in front of the antioch police department today amid growing scandals. newly obtained police reports reveal senior level officers signed off on multiple use of force incidents was later deemed to be excessive by a federal indictment released in august, charged several antioch police officers with using excessive force. this while other officers are linked to a racist texting scandal. when it comes to investigations, when it comes to fbi, this and administrative proceedings that, that's all important. >> but the fact of the matter is, is that we need to change the structure internally so that

we can begin changing the culture at the police department. >> antioch police did not return requests for comment. today's protests will be held at the police headquarters at noon. now to the south bay. police are warning about what they're calling a crime syndicate. the suspects are believed to have committed everything from online scams to carjackings. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez talked to a man who once helped take down members of the italian mafia. >> t.a.z. police say the city is seeing a large increase in romanian organized crime. on wednesday police arrested two suspects. they say are connected to approximately 25 separate crimes. they include armed carjacking, armed robbery, jewelry, robberies and facebook marketplace scams. police released these photos of evidence they believe are connected to the crimes that spanned from july to october. we reached out to bob delaney, a former new jersey state police trooper who infiltrated italian mob families in the 1970s.

>> this is a system that's in place within that criminal group. and so for law enforcement to be able to stop it is difficult because it's ongoing. >> delaney went undercover for three years back then, which helped lead to the arrest of 29 people connected to organized crime. >> so 2 or 3 more people conspiring to commit a crime gives the technical version. but there's much more to it. there's a structure and many times law enforcement from my view, over there, gives them more credit. and they're not as organized as we think. delaney says though organized crime may not be as sophisticated as we think the criminals are innovative. >> san jose police say the suspects are targeting elderly members of the asian and indian community. police say a group of men and women in a car or suv will ask for directions, engage in a conversation and thank the victim while slyly taking their jewelry and replacing it with

fakes. san jose police also said romanian organized criminal suspects have posed as general contractors, roofers or plumbers. anyone with information is asked to contact the san jose police department's robbery unit. >> the more that we take off layers of people within that organization, it keeps that organization disorganized and it doesn't allow it to have a stronghold in a community. >> in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> today, president biden and the first lady are observing veterans day. they will take part in the traditional wreath laying ceremony at arlington national cemetery. right now, we are taking a live look from the tomb of the unknown soldier in arlington, virginia. the president will deliver a speech after laying a wreath at the tomb there this morning. and we hope to bring it to you live this morning during our 8 a.m. newscast. this marks the tomb's 102nd anniversary. it is the final resting place for three unidentified fillled american

your forecast. but right now, shifting gears, a faculty at san francisco state will begin organizing a one day labor strike, joining four other cal state university campuses, the day for the strike is set for december. if a new contract is not settled by then. organizers say that extensive job cuts for lecturers have taken classes away from students and also placed heavier workloads on faculty. sf state's faculty are negotiating for a 12% pay increase, as well as additional teacher benefits. hollywood is back in business board members from the actors union voted to approve the best and final offer made by the studios. many of the board members were also at the negotiation table. the next step will be for union members who have been on strike since summer to review and vote on the new three year contract. a date for the member vote has not been announced yet. now an update from our i-team. new details are emerging about the alaska airlines pilot accused of trying to crash a flight headed for san

francisco. joseph emerson of pleasant hill told the new york times that he suffered a mental breakdown after taking psychedelic mushrooms. the i-team's dan noyes has more from the times interview. plus he's also been talking with emerson wife, 44 year old joseph emerson was arrested and charged with attempted murder for each of the 83 passengers and crew aboard the alaska airlines flight from everett, washington, to sfo on october 22nd as an off duty pilot. >> emerson had been riding in the cockpit's jump seat, but he told the new york times psychedelic mushrooms he took two days before left him questioning what was real. that he thought he was dreaming as he pulled the plane's fire suppression handles that could have cut power to the engines. emerson told the times. i thought it would stop both engines. the plane would start to head towards a crash, and i would wake up the pilots had to struggle with emerson to keep the plane under control. when joe and i spoke that weekend, he wasn't himself. >> it was odd. i didn't

understand what was going on. >> his wife, sarah stretch, tells me emerson had fallen into a depression after the best man from their wedding. a fellow alaska airlines pilot, scott penney, died in 2018 while jogging on a work trip to hawaii . >> the loss of scott was devastating to us and for joe, especially, i feel he has never come to terms with his death, emerson told the times. >> he and his friends spent the weekend before the flight celebrating pennies life, and the one of them provided the psychedelic mushrooms. sarah stretch says the mushrooms may have triggered an episode and that her husband had resisted seeking help for his ongoing depression for fear it could ground h as a pilot. speaking to him after the incident, i was so confused and worried because he wasn't making any sense. >> it just wasn't the joe i know and married a mental health diagnosis is not a career ender. >> the faa announced thursday they are establishing a committee to provide recommendations on breaking down barriers that prevent pilots from reporting mental health issues. >> we have completed clinical

research and amended policy to make it much easier for pilots on a widening number of antidepressants to continue with their careers, joseph emerson told the times. >> i don't know if i'll ever fly an airplane again. i really don't, he said. and i had a moment where that kind of became obvious and i had to grieve that out for the i-team. dan noyes, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you, dan. more than 800,000 sutter health patients had their personal information exposed in a data breach. a message on sutter health's website says that the information was compromised during a ransomware attack last spring. the breach exposed birthdates health, information, diagnosis and treatment information. the company is now offering a year of free access to a credit monitoring service. letters have gone out to those who may be affected. former wrestler and actor dwayne the rock johnson says he was asked to run for president. he made the announcement during an episode of trevor noah's what now podcast. noah revealed the 2021

jose. you're at 49in the east bay. oakland a little bit cooler at 46, 44. in napa. we're at 41 in san ramon. the city right now coming in at 52 degrees. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. the story we're tracking, there's this weak ridge of high pressure just anchored off our coastline today and tomorrow that's supplying us with the mild air in the afternoons. it's keeping any of this wet weather to the north around the pacific northwest. but then next week, we'll lose this ridge. and the storm track moves a bit farther to the south, and that's where we'll have some chances of rain on the seven day. but a live look from sutro tower, the golden gate bridge looking lovely this morning. we are fog free across the region. some passing high clouds right now. chilly spots this morning. dry and mild weather for today and tomorrow. and then we're tracking periods of rain and even some scattered showers into next week. but for veterans day from pier 39 this morning, we are looking at your sun coming up here at 645. bright conditions throughout the day. by 4 p.m, we're calling it mild sunshine 60 close to the coast away from the coast. we

should go into the upper 60s and lower 70s by 4 p.m, a high of 69 in oakland today, 73 and sunny in san jose, 68. in the city about 71. in san rafael the same and concord, 73 in fairfield, santa cruz. a lovely day along the coast at 72 degrees overnight tonight. just a few high clouds, mainly clear skies and temps dipping into the 40s. now future tracker temperatures sunday is looking equally as nice. we'll have sunshine in those temperatures. not really budging too much. mid 60s to the low 70s. once again. then the pattern becomes cooler cloudier air and wetter. so we'll begin future weather monday morning, monday morning will feature just increasing clouds. what we'll see is this area of low pressure. you can see it spinning off our coast will start to send moisture into the bay area probably on tuesday and then we'll have on and off showers throughout wednesday and thursday as this low pressure just meanders on our coast. this is 8 a.m. wednesday. and you can clearly see we are tracking still wet weather across much of northern and central california.

for veterans day, it's looking very nice, mostly sunny. those temperatures ranging from the mid 60s along the coast to the low and mid 70s away from the coast and our warmest spots inland. now after the weekend, we have some wet weather to talk about. could affect some of the events for apec. we'll talk about that coming up in just a few minutes. gloria >> all right, thank you, drew. and speaking of apec this morning, apec is officially here in san francisco. security is heavy in san francisco. so as the city prepares to welcome the world's top foreign officials to the international conference, the general public will face bay bridge lane closures, downtown, ramps being closed off, and large barriers around the moscone area where the conference will be held. these ramps are close because they specifically feed right into the area of the moscone center. >> those directly feed into security areas where people aren't allowed to be. >> you can expect major street closures and transit impacts. most of those will take effect on monday. california highway patrol says official closures

california, last night. petrolia is a town of about 1000 people south of eureka. the quake happened around 7:15 p.m. it was felt up and down the coast. but the good news is there are no reports of any damage now to the war between israel and hamas. french president emmanuel macron has called for a cease fire in gaza, urging other world leaders to join him. so here are the latest developments in israel is now reporting 1200 people were killed by hamas in a series of attacks on israeli communities on october 7th. that number is a revision from a previous figure of 1400. the parties involved in the ongoing negotiations to secure the release of hostages are working toward a deal. us officials have confirmed that they are working on that. and of course we'll bring you more updates about that story. now we are shifting gears and local jewish organizations set up empty shabbat tables across the bay area. they are paying

tribute to those hostages. the event is part of an international effort. it is calling for their safe return when the tables are set in berkeley foster city, napa, san francisco, sausalito and walnut creek. shabbat is the jewish day of rest and it's celebrated each week from sunset friday to sunset on saturday, each seat features a profile of those held hostage and ceremonial bread is left for them. dozens of jewish family and also teachers and allies rallied against a new resolution introduced by the oakland education association in and they say the resolution could stoke anti-semitism within the community. families say they don't think the resolution in schools is necessary. i have a hard time understanding why a teacher's union or a school board thinks they should be creating resolutions around one of the most complex international conflicts when even global leaders currently cannot agree on a resolution on
