impacted by the several closures expected. the events scheduled for today, as all eyes are on the bay area this week. good morning. it's sunday, november 12th. i'm stephanie sierra. and we begin with the weather. meteorologist drew tuma is here with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. and we're on our way to another lovely day, just like yesterday. expect a lot of sunshine. we're off to a bit of a cooler start out there, but it is a beautiful morning. this is a live look from our mt. tam cam showing you the bright lights of the city. you can see all the way as far south as the south bay on that camera. but we are starting out on a cooler note by a few degrees compared to yesterday morning. low 40s for a lot of us. we're at 54, though, in the city, 47 in san jose, 44 in concord. here's future weather. we'll have high clouds streaming in throughout the day. temperatures are mild once again into the afternoon. we'll go into the mid 60s and lower 70s for daytime highs under partly cloudy conditions, a high of 70 in oakland, about 72. in palo alto, 68 in the city, we'll hit about 72 later

on in santa rosa. but we do have to focus our attention on some rain coming our way later on this week. we'll show you those details stephanie, coming up in just a few minutes. all right, drew, thank you. >> well, happening today, san francisco mayor, london breed is set to attend an opening celebration for the asia pacific economic cooperation summit. the apec finance ministers gala is being hosted by us treasury secretary janet yellen. mayor breed is expected to attend this . the gala precedes the finance minister meeting, which starts tomorrow. representatives from each of the member economies attending apec will discuss trade and investment across the region. the summit welcomes economic leaders from across the world, including president joe biden. events started at the moscone center this weekend. and now some streets are blocked off for security measures. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard gives us a look at the first events of the summit. i'm just trying to get yeah, yeah, yeah. >> so just one block, that's all it is. just cross here.

>> one lane of southbound embarcadero is now closed to cars between broadway and green street. the sidewalk is close to. >> yeah, i'm not sure why this is happening here. >> the city says it's all in the name of security. world leaders will gather at the exploratorium later this week, but not everybody was happy about the detour. >> tell us we can't walk there. these people are walking right here. now. >> these security measures are just the beginning. by wednesday , most of the waterfront and the embarcadero will be off limits to cars and pedestrians work on women's economic empowerment in apec. the apec summit kicking off at moscone center. kiosks and workstations set up for more than 2000 registered journalists . one of the first events featuring senior us official for apec, matt murray, telling local high school students why this summit matters. >> so it's a place where we can also get together as economies across the region to really share ideas with each other, to share best practices and to really focus on the c in apec,

which is cooperation, human rights. >> the focus of this solidarity event attended by chinese dissidents. congressman mike gallagher, chairman of the select committee on china, says stakes will be high when two world leaders meet this week. >> and my concern and we were talking about it before is that when we have high level dialog like the one that's happening this week between xi jinping and joe biden, that we don't that human rights don't get thrown into the gutter in san francisco, cornell, bernard, abc7 news now getting around certain areas of the city will be tough. >> muni is no longer able to serve stops in the exclusion zones. those are the security zones set by the secret service which are mostly near the moscone center. some of the bay bridge off ramps are going to be closed due to the events taking place at the moscone center. they would normally feed traffic right into the security zone. the closures will start tuesday and go through friday. they'll start at 5:00 in the morning and end at 9:00 at night. every day.

and the westbound direction, the fifth street off ramp is going to be closed. the fremont street and eighth street off ramps will remain open. eastbound drivers won't be able to use the fourth street off ramp. and that last san francisco exit will be at seventh street aside from the ramps, one lane in each direction on the bridge itself will be closed. that closure will be continuous for four days, starting at 5 a.m. tuesday. and lasting until friday night at 9:00. now, we've put together a day by day guide to apec, from street closures to official events, bookmark it on abc7 news.com and we are updating it whenever new information is released. now to the war between israel and hamas . israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu continues to push back against international calls for a cease fire. he claims gaza's main medical center is one of hamas's command posts. here's abc news reporter alison kosik far too many palestinians have been killed.

>> far too many have suffered, according to the hamas run health ministry, more than 11,000 palestinians have died since the war began this weekend . >> hezbollah taking responsibility for two attacks on israel. meanwhile, the idf continues its airstrikes on gaza and suspected hezbollah positions in lebanon. arab leaders met in saudi arabia on saturday condemning israel's handling of the war and calling for an immediate cease fire. prime minister benjamin netanyahu pushing back, saying israel's battle against hamas will continue with full force. several hospitals in gaza say that they have been under relentless bombardment. patients and medical staff trapped. >> there is no electricity. actually, there is no water. there is no food. so our team is exhausted. we can see actually the smoking, the smoke around the hospital. they hit everything around the hospital and they hit the hospital many times israel has portrayed shifa hospital as hamas's main command post. >> they have positioned all of their capabilities in around and

beneath hospitals, saying militants were using civilians as human shields and had set up elaborate bunkers underneath the hospital claims both hamas and al-shifa staff have denied there is no siege. >> i repeat it. there is no siege on the shifa hospital. the east side of the hospital is open on al-wahda street for the safe pass of gazans who wish to leave the hospital. >> israel has been urging gazans to flee southward, opening up humanitarian corridors. the israeli military says more than 150,000 have fled in just the past few days. most of them on foot, but tens of thousands still remain in the north, where the fighting is the heaviest. alison kosik, abc news, new york. protests continue around the world because of the war. >> nearly 3000 people turned out for a pro-palestinian massive rally in london on saturday. the protest is one of a growing number, all calling for a cease

fire in the east bay. authorities are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting in san leandro. police say it happened in the parking lot of a chili's restaurant where a woman was found shot. she died a short time later. investigators are giving few details at this point, but say the victim and the gunman did know each other. in vallejo, commotion and confusion at a high school football game and nearby shooting raised concerns of another active shooter situation at vallejo high. the times herald reports one student ran onto the field seeking safety after being shot at a nearby gas station. he was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. the school says it followed protocol until officials determined there was not an active shooter. there today, people looking for a covid treatment outside of their health care networks may end up having to pay for it. november 11th marked six months from when the federal covid health emergency ended. california law required health plans to continue covering covid vaccines

the city's police department. no justice, no peace. >> no racist police. >> organizers rallied in front of police headquarters on saturday. they want the acting police chief and president of the police officers union to step down. newly released documents show they signed off on the use of force by officers in certain cases. now, the fbi later determined the use of force was excessive. the officers involved were indicted in august on federal civil rights violations. well as you're heading out this morning, if you had trouble loading up your clipper card this weekend,

you're not the only one with a problem. kept users from putting money on their transit cards. and we're told it did not matter if you were going through apple or android. but the good news is that issue was fixed last night. more than $18 million. that's how much the city and county of san francisco is getting to convert a hotel into permanent housing for the unhoused. the funding coming from project homekey, a state program created to help unhoused people. millions of dollars of grant money has allowed a number of other bay area housing projects to move forward and the east bay oakland is being granted over 15.5 million. san leandro more than $9 million. hayward and union city are getting nearly $9.7 million. now the goal is to provide housing to people experiencing homelessness, to commemorate veterans day, president joe biden visited arlington national cemetery in virginia yesterday. biden laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. the commander in chief recounted famous battles fought by us troops. biden called veterans the steel

spine of this nation. he was joined by first lady jill biden and vice president kamala harris. numerous events were held today around the bay area to mark veterans day. from parades to celebrations, people found a way to salute the troops . abc7 news reporter tara campbell shows us the sights and sounds of these tributes. this scene of stillness at san francisco's national cemetery. >> i always think about, you know, the sacrifice, you know, and the losses. kirsi tiemroth is here on this veterans day in honor of her husband's ancestors who served in the navy. we like to come here every so often just to think about it. you know, the family members and also their service and very interesting history actually. and from the cemetery in san francisco to parades in petaluma and san jose. thousands of people lining the streets. >> i'm thrilled. i'm just thrilled, this fantastic turnout. >> kay hartman comes from a long line of loved ones who have

served. >> my mother was a coast guard and she i brought her down to be in the parade for decades. and my father was a navy veteran. my husband's vietnam. >> and in the east bay, the uss hornet celebrated its 25th anniversary as a sea, air and space museum. >> a great day at the hornet. they had a lot of wonderful ways celebrating the heritage here and the history and celebrating our vets. we have had over 4500 people come today. >> it's i mean, it's spectacular for the people here. it's great for our veterans that work here. it's great for our staff and for our community. >> and over in danville, an open house at the veterans memorial building. the celebration included a space themed pop up museum and a ceremony honoring veterans. >> we are so happy that we are able to put on events like this through the veterans, putting it on themselves. >> and meanwhile, back in san francisco ago, a veteran visiting from chicago also takes a moment to remember.

and chilly spots in the low 40s. it's another day of just mild sunshine out there later on this afternoon and then things start to change. it turns unsettled for the week ahead with showers in the forecast tuesday through friday. so it's a pretty long period that we do have rain in the forecast right now. temperatures are in the low 40s to the low 50s. as we begin your sunday under those mainly clear skies, the tam cam. i mean, this is one of our greatest shots we have this morning. it is just so nice out there. we have those clear skies. it's partly cloudy just throughout the day. we're in the 60s and 70s by lunchtime and then by 4:00 pm. temperatures vary similar to yesterday. we'll go into the low 60s and the low 70s by about 4 p.m. today. by the way, your sunset now at 5 p.m. that means the sun starts setting before five as we head into the next couple of weeks. so highs today, 68 in the city, 70 in oakland. we'll go to 72 in santa rosa, 75 in san jose, 72 in concord, 63 and half moon bay. santa cruz at 70 degrees. and overnight tonight, we will have partly

cloudy skies still and temperatures mainly again in the 40s and in the 50s. here's future weather getting you into monday, monday is dry, but there's a fair amount of cloud cover overhead. so it's a mix of sun and clouds on your monday. but we don't have to worry about showers to start out the week. however over as we head into tuesday, we'll start to see light showers popping up tuesday morning. and i would anticipate for the tuesday morning commute, we will have some slick conditions. but the latest information for tuesday, the first round of showers really looks to focus their attention in the north bay. we'll look at 1230 on tuesday. and it's kind of the haves and have nots in the north bay. we are seeing rain, but outside of the north bay, there's a lot of sunshine. so location is going to be key on tuesday as to whether you see rain or you see sunshine. in fact, you look at rainfall totals on tuesday, higher amounts certainly in the north bay. and then those numbers ring . we drop off in those numbers outside of the north bay, really fall tuesday morning. it looks like tuesday afternoon, the south bay the east bay and the peninsula, we'll see a mix of

sun and clouds while the north bay is seeing rain. but we continue that threat for showers even into wednesday, thursday and friday. future weather. we have this low just meandering near us. so wednesday will likely track scattered showers, even into thursday and friday. right now, no day on the seven day looks to be a total washout by any means. but those showers will be on and off throughout the week ahead and those totals will add up in some spots, will likely see more than a half of an inch of rain in many areas throughout the week ahead. so here's the accuweather 70 forecast today. fine fall weather enjoy the weekend. it is looking lovely out there. cooler and breezier here tomorrow and then we'll track those showers tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday. and you see stephanie, they're all level ones right now. i think it's really important to stay updated. each day to the forecast because it could change as to who sees the heaviest rain each day. but just know we will have times of drier weather, but showers certainly in the forecast for much of the extended period. >> all right. it will be a busy time, certainly, of course, with aipac that tuesday morning commute tuesday morning, commute a little wet. all right. thanks

>> so currently only the need is at a peak level. it's the same we saw during the peak height of the pandemic. >> second harvest is very much a hub for food banks in san mateo and santa clara counties. on average, they're helping to feed 500,000 people a month. the pandemic supports rental way in march of this year, and since then we have seen like an increased level of need since need has outpaced financial donations. they're now trying to rally the community to donate their time or money. >> it has like immediate impact. you know that when you donate to second harvest, our neighbors are getting help immediate, like tangible help. >> on thursday morning, volunteers packed 30,000 pounds of food in the afternoon it was 23,000. >> so that'll be about 960 families that are going to be affected, 3840 people. for many people during this holiday season, getting groceries is not as simple as making a list and going to the store.

francisco as they enjoyed their last moments of feeling normal before the city enters the global spotlight. >> but those who came to the city already had to plan ahead. >> we drove here. there's traffic coming off the highway is a pain in the butt, but we're here now. >> many going to the chase center for the warriors game had to sacrifice extra time to get there before tip off. i always look at the map to kind of get a gauge, an idea of how long it's going to take to get here. >> so i probably left about an hour earlier than i would have usually the warriors telling fans next week attending events at chase center to start planning muni line in front of the arena will be rerouted in all lane closures will make it challenging for anyone driving bad traffic that could rival other major cities. >> i feel sorry for the people that live here because i know how stressful it is. i mean, i travel all over the country. new york traffic is horrible. i like traffic is horrible. houston traffic is horrible. >> similar feelings in north beach. >> the weather is good. the town is popping. >> a beautiful night right now. but people here say they might not be able to have a night like

this for at least a week. sherry greedy butler plans to avoid the apex zones altogether. she says others should do the same. >> we're going to stay away from downtown and let apex do their business and we'll stay in the neighborhoods, see north beach. there's no barriers up here. it's business as usual. >> many roads will be closed and many transit lines will be changing. but parts of the city will stay the same. some people we spoke with say even tourists should go check them out. >> we're friendly and we have a lot to offer. this is a world class city friendly to the thousands of people ready to embrace san francisco. >> ryan curry, abc seven news today, multiple organizations will hold a no to apec protest in opposition to the convention. >> we're told thousands of people are expected to attend. we've seen protests like this leading up to the summit. this is video from a protest just last week. one of the groups protesting today is focused on climate change. they want the countries and corporations at apec to stop funding fossil fuels. today's demonstration is

the green but from the white. the ice shelves and glaciers dating back millions of years ago. the sheer scale of the greenland ice sheet and the ice shelves is really astounding and really beautiful. >> but of course, the changes that we're seeing are also a bit concerning. >> the ice shelves are melting. san jose state assistant professor mike wood and a group of international research. others use data from satellites, aircraft and other models to see an unpressed increase in melting across greenland's northern eight ice shelves. one third of the shelves total mass is gone. >> we've seen an increase in ice melting on the undersides of these ice shelves over the past 20 years, and the reason for this increase was because of warming ocean waters around greenland. >> these shelves are an important part of the ecosystem because they hold glaciers on land and slow ice loss as they melt. researchers have seen the disturbing ization of nearby glaciers this is really important because as we melt down these ice shelves, they act as ice dams that help to hold back that ice. >> so as they weaken, this

permits in an increase of the ice that can make it to the ocean. and that causes sea level rise and the impacts are felt globally, including here in the bay area. ice is added to the ocean in northern greenland. it melts and it finds its way through occurrence. so it really spreads across the entire world. and of course sea level rise is one of the most concerning components of our in our changing climate. and that's because most of our global population, like in the bay area , lives along the coast. so to keep the world above water, the goal of the study that wood coauthored is to raise awareness about ice loss and sea level rise in order to take steps now to prevent further harm. it's a direct benefit to society. the more we know about these processes better, we can adapt to it and the more we can help mitigate negative impacts on society resulting from sea level rise. >> dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> a large fire shut down a highway in los angeles in both directions. lanes. governor gavin newsom issued a state of

seven along with satellite. one more day of this ridge keeping us nice and mild and then changes are afoot. we have this front right here, but it's really this area of low pressure . we're going to talk about this low pressure a lot on the seven day forecast because it's going to ride down the coast and then it's just going to sit off the coast of california for much of the week ahead, what we call a cut off low and sometimes cut off lows, have a mind of their own. and that's why we have scattered showers in the forecast for big portion of the seven days. let's plan this all out for you. here's future weather tomorrow, monday, you'll notice more in the way of cloud cover. but we are dry on monday. you have no issues when it comes to any wet weather. that will change starting on tuesday. tuesday morning, we'll start to see some early morning showers pop up. wouldn't be surprised if we have some wet roads for the commute on tuesday, but it looks like with the latest information on the first bulk of showers is really going to focus their attention in the north bay. so here's 8 a.m. we'll track those showers and downpours in the

north bay. here's 1230. and i really want to show you the trend. if you're in the north bay, you're getting rain outside of the north bay, you're getting sunshine. so this is one of those systems where location is really going to be key as to what you see with this first round of rain. so here's tuesday . rainfall estimates highest in the north bay. then they really drop off outside of the north bay and a lot of this shower activity outside of the north bay falls very early on tuesday. then future weather shows you just the trend we're seeing. this low just sits off the coast and supplies us with scattered showers wednesday, thursday and even into friday as well. so it's one of these forecasts that you really want to check in with us each and every day because the fine tuned detail, owls are likely going to change in terms of the timing of the rain's arrival each day and how much we can expect. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the next seven days for you. it's nice today. get out and enjoy the dry mild weather cooler breezier tomorrow and then we have those showers moving in heaviest in the north bay on tuesday and then scattered showers in the
