week here in san francisco, as aipac brings big names to the city, including the president. you could be impacted by several closures. the events scheduled for today, as all eyes are on the bay area this week. good morning. it's sunday, november 12th. i'm stephanie sierra. and we begin with the weather. drew tuma is here with changes. >> yeah love today. today is great. lots of sunshine to finish out the weekend and then the week ahead. we do have to talk about showers in the forecast. here's a live look outside. this is just a main king sunrise here. this is our mt. tam cam showing the city, the east bay and the south bay in the background with those first hints of the sun getting up here. temperatures maybe 1 or 2 degrees cooler than we were this time yesterday. so we're starting out your day in the 40s and in the 50s. let's go hour by hour for you on future weather. we're going to find those temperatures warming into the 60s by about 11 a.m. under

partly cloudy skies. and if you liked yesterday's temperatures, you'll love today as well. we're back into the 60s and 70s. so partly cloudy conditions, 70 in oakland, 75. in san jose, 68. in the city, about 72. in santa rosa, we'll hit 73. in fairfield. these dry conditions, they don't last too much longer. rain returns for several days on the seven day forecast. we'll talk about the wet pattern coming our way in just a few minutes stephanie. >> all right, drew, thank you. well, happening today, san francisco mayor london breed is set to attend an opening celebration for the asia pacific economic cooperation summit. the apec finance ministers gala is being hosted by us treasury secretary janet yellen. mayor breed is expected to attend the gala precede us. the finance ministers meeting, which starts tomorrow, represents lives from each of the member economies attending apec, will discuss trade and investment across the region. the summit welcomes economic leaders from across the world, including president joe biden. events started at the moscone center this week and now

some streets are blocked off for security measures. abc's seven news reporter cornell bernard gives us a look at the first events of the summit. i'm just trying to get yeah, yeah, yeah. >> so just one block. that's all it is. just cross here. >> one lane of southbound embarcadero is now closed to cars between broadway and green street. the sidewalk is close to. yeah for i'm not sure why this this is happening here. the city says it's all in the name of security. we world leaders will gather at the exploratorium later this week. but not everybody was happy about the detour. >> tell us. we can't walk there. these people are walking right here. >> these security measures are just the beginning. by wednesday , most of the waterfront and the embarcadere will be off limits to cars and pedestrians. work on women's economic empowerment in apec. the apec summit kicking off at moscone center. kiosks and workstations set up for more than 2000 registered journalists . one of the first events featuring senior us official for apec, matt murray, telling local

high school students why this summit matters so it's a place where we can also get together as economies across the region to really share ideas with each other, to share best practices and to really focus on the c in apec, which is cooperation and human rights. the focus of this solidarity event attended by chinese dissidents. congressman mike gallagher, chairman of the select committee on china, says stakes will be high when two world leaders meet this week. >> and my concern and we were talking about it before is that when we have high level dialog like the one that's happening this week between xi jinping and joe biden, that we don't that human rights don't get thrown down into the gutter in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc seven news now getting around certain areas of the city will be tough. >> muni is no longer able to serve stops in the exclusion zones. those are the security zones set by the secret service which are mostly near the moscone center. now, some of the

bay bridge off ramps are going to be closed due to the events taking place at the moscone center. they would normally feed traffic right into the security zone, so the closures will start tuesday and go through friday. they'll start at 5:00 in the morning and end at 9:00 at night. every day. and the westbound direction, the fifth street offramp is going to be closed and the fremont street and eighth street off ramps remain open. eastbound drivers won't be able to use the fourth street off ramp that last san francisco exit will be at seventh street. aside from the ramps, one lane in each direction on the bridge itself will be closed. that closure will be continuous for four days, starting at 5 a.m. tuesday. and lasting until friday night at 9:00. now we've put together a day by day guide to apec. from street closures to official events, bookmark it over on abc7 news.com and we are updating it whenever new information is released. now to the war between israel and hamas. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu continues to

push back against international calls for a cease fire. he claims gaza's main medical center is one of hamas command posts. here's abc news reporter alison kosik. >> far too many palestinians have been killed and far too many have suffered. >> according to the hamas run health ministry. more than 11,000 palestinians have died since the war began this weekend . hezbollah taking responsibility for two attacks on israel. meanwhile the idf continues its airstrikes on gaza and suspected hezbollah positions in lebanon. arab leaders met in saudi arabia on saturday condemning israel's handling of the war and calling for an immediate cease fire. prime minister benjamin netanyahu pushing back, saying israel's battle against hamas will continue with full force. several hospitals in gaza say that they have been under relentless bombardment. patients and medical staff trapped. >> there is no electricity, actually, there is no water. there is no food. so our team is exhausted. we can see actually

the smoking, the smoke around the hospital. they hit everything around the hospital and they hit the hospital many times. >> israel has portrayed shifa hospital as hamas's main command post. they have positioned all of their capabilities in around and beneath hospitals, saying militants were using civilians as human shields and had set up elaborate bunkers underneath the hospital claims both hamas and al-shifa staff have denied there is no siege. >> i repeat, there is no siege on the shifa hospital. the east side of the hospital is open on al-wahda street for the safe pass of gazans who wish to leave the hospital says israel has been urging gazans to flee southward, opening up humanitarian corridors. >> the israeli military says more than 150,000 have fled in just the past few days. most of them on foot. but tens of thousands still remain in the north where the fighting is the heaviest. alison kosik, abc

news, new york. >> protests continue around the world because of the war. nearly 300,000 people turned out for a pro-palestinian massive rally in london on saturday. the protest is one of a growing number. all calling for a cease fire in the east bay. now, authorities are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting in san leandro. police say it happened in the parking lot of a chili's restaurant where a woman was found shot. she died a short time later. investigators are giving few details at this point, but say the victim and the gunman knew each other in vallejo, commotion and confusion at a high school football game. a nearby shooting raised concerns of an active shooter situation at vallejo high. the times herald reports one student ran onto the field seeking safety after being shot at a nearby gas station. he was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. the school says it followed protocol until officials determined there was not an active shooter there.

>> a police organizers rallied in front of police headquarters on saturday. >> they want the acting police chief and president of the police officers union to step down. newly released documents show they signed off on the use of force by officers in certain cases. now, the fbi later determined the use of force was excessive. the officers involved were indicted in august on federal civil rights violations. well as you're heading out this morning, if you had trouble loading up your clipper card this weekend, you're not the only one. a problem kept users from putting money on their transit cards. and we're told it did not matter if you were going through apple or android. but the good news is that issue was fixed last night. more than $18 million. that's how much the city and county of san francisco is getting to convert a hotel into permanent housing for the homeless. the money is coming from governor gavin newsom's homekey initiative, a state program created to fund supportive housing. millions of

dollars of grant money has allowed a number of other bay area housing projects to move forward in the east bay. oakland will get over $15.5 million. san leandro more than $9 million. hayward and union city are getting nearly $9.7 million. now the goal is to provide housing to people experiencing homelessness. to commemorate veterans day, president joe biden visited arlington national cemetery in virginia yesterday. biden laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. the commander in chief recounted famous battles fought by us troops. biden called veterans the steel spine of this nation. he was joined by first lady jill biden and vice president kamala harris. numerous events were held today around the bay area to mark veterans day. from parades to celebrations, people found a way to salute the troops. abc7 news reporter tara campbell shows us the sights and sounds of these tributes as this scene of stillness at san francisco's national cemetery.

because we'll have that low sinking south and starting on tuesday, it's just going to meander off of our coastline and really sit there at least through friday. so future weather, we'll get you into monday, showing you we're dry. it's just a mix of sun and clouds. then as we head into tuesday morning, we'll start to see some light showers appear likely some slick roads for the tuesday morning commute. but by tuesday, the middle part of the morning and into the afternoon, it really looks like the rain is focused in the north bay, meaning living outside or working outside of the north bay. on tuesday, you'll mainly see a mix of sun and clouds. location is super important as to what you're going to see in this forecast on tuesday because we have higher rainfall totals in the north bay and then those totals really drop off outside of the north bay where the rain is less focused on tuesday, then heading into wednesday, thursday and friday, it stays unsettled. you can kind of see waves of rain moving in. we're going to fine tune these details as we get closer to the middle part of the week and show you where the heaviest rain will fall. but just no showers in the forecast for big portion of the

south bay tells us times are more challenging now than during the pandemic. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains, means. packed in six minutes by staff and volunteers at second harvest of silicon valley. >> each box contains 25 pounds of fresh produce. it's a busy time at the food bank. with thanksgiving just two weeks away, we are providing frozen turkeys to many of our meal provider partners and we are also getting whole chickens. currently, 1 in 6 people in silicon valley are turning to second harvest for help. so currently the need is at a peak level. >> it's the same we saw during the peak height of the pandemic. >> second harvest is very much a hub for food banks in san mateo and santa clara counties. on average, they're helping to feed 500,000 people a month. >> the pandemic supports went away in march of this year, and since then we have seen an like

changing, but parts of the city will stay the same. people we spoke with say even tourists should go check them out. >> we're friendly and we have a lot to offer. this is a world class city friendly to the thousands of people ready to embrace san francisco. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> now today, multiple organizations will hold a no to aipac protest in opposition to the convention. we're told thousands of people are expected to attend. we've seen protests like this leading up to the summit this is video from a protest last week. one of the groups protesting today is focused on climate change. they want the countries and corporations at aipac to stop funding fossil fuels. today's demonstration is expected to happen right in front of the ferry building here in san francisco. so remember this giant ferris wheel installed in san francisco's golden gate park? well, now it's at pier 43 and fisherman's wharf. the 150 foot sky star wheel was supposed to start running yesterday, but

liberty bell and grab some supplies. that's on dolores and 19th street. today's event is part of the clean california program. the warming oceans worldwide are leading to the rapid melting of ice and glaciers. abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey tells us about the new study by a san jose state researcher revealing how dire this situation is. >> the scenes of greenland and don't let its name fool you. the beauty doesn't come from the green, but from the white. the ice shelves and glaciers dating back millions of years ago. >> the sheer scale of the greenland ice sheet and the ice shelves is really astounding and really beautiful. all but of course, the changes that we're seeing are also a bit concerning . >> the ice shelves are melting. san jose state assistant professor mike wood and a group of international researchers use data from satellites, aircrafts and other models to see an unpressed rented increase in melting across greenland's northern eight ice shelves. one third of the shelves total mass

is gone. >> we've seen an increase in ice melting on the undersides of these ice shelves over the past 20 years, and the reason for this increase was because of warming ocean waters around greenland. >> these shelves are an important part of the ecosystem because they hold glaciers on land and slow ice loss as they melt. researchers have seen the disturbing ization of nearby glaciers this is really important because as we melt down these ice shelves, they act as ice dams that help to hold back that ice. >> so as they weaken, this permits in an increase of the ice that can make it to the ocean and that causes sea level rise and the impacts are felt globally, including here in the bay area. ice is added to the ocean in northern greenland. it melts and it finds its way through occurrence. so it really spreads across the entire world. and of course sea level rise is one of the most concerning components of our in our changing climate. and that's because most of our global population, like in the bay area , lives along the coast. so to keep the world above water, the

goal of the study that would coauthored is to raise awareness about ice loss and sea level rise in order to take steps now to prevent further harm. it's a direct benefit to society. the more we know about these processes, the better we can adapt to it and the more we can help mitigate negative impacts on society resulting from sea level rise. >> justin dorsey, abc7 news. >> a large fire shut down a highway in los angeles in both directions. governor gavin newsom issued a state of emergency to help facilitate clean up and repair as storage lots beneath interstate ten caught fire closing the highway near downtown la for at least 24 hours. now, the fire spread eight acres and at least 160 firefighters responded. >> add the structural integrity of the freeway is possibly compromised. we have caltrans engineers here on scene looking at the damage and they're going to determine whether or not the freeway is safe to drive on. >> crews say the fire burned

into the 40s and into the 50s as we head into monday. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. high pressure still in control right now, but changes are coming and it's in the form of low pressure and this low pressure later this week is going to slide down the coast. and based basically just sit and spin off the california coastline and that supplies us with those shower chances. so here's future weather. tomorrow, monday, it's dry. it's just a blend of sunshine and cloud cover throughout the afternoon. temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. but then tuesday morning, we'll start to see some showers work into the forecast. could have some slick conditions for the tuesday morning commute. but it looks like with the latest information, the rain really focuses its energy in the north bay. on tuesday, we'll have those showers on and off in the north bay. but areas outside of the north bay, we're looking at sunny conditions. so location is certainly very key on tuesday as to what kind of weather you'll be expecting. the north bay will have some higher rainfall totals with this system could see up to a half of an inch in spots in

the north bay. and then those numbers really drop off areas outside of the north bay where you see your rainfall totals. that will likely happen before sunrise on tuesday. we'll keep our eyes on the track, but right now, it looks like the north bay will have the biggest impact on tuesday. then things start to change here on wednesday. that low pressure spins off the coast and it supplies us with scattered shower chances. wednesday thursday evening to friday. now we still have to fine tune where the heaviest of the rain is going to fall on those days. but showers are in the forecast for much of the seven day. here's a look at it. here's the accuweather seven day forecast we'll find today. it's a nice fine fall day with cooler and breezier conditions on monday, tuesday, rain returns to the forecast with the heaviest in the north bay and then we'll track those scattered showers wednesday, thursday and friday. and this is one of those seven days, steph, where you really want to check in each and every day with the latest info because the track and the intensity, especially wednesday, thursday and friday is likely to change. we'll have to fine tune and pinpoint exactly where that heaviest rain is going to fall. >> okay, good to know. and
