amid the war in the middle east and here at home, we are gearing up for a busy week here in san francisco as aipac brings big names to the city, including the president, along with many closures. the events scheduled for today, as all eyes are on the bay area this week. good morning. it's sunday, november 12th. i'm stephanie sierra. and we begin with the weather. drew is making a special sunday appearance. >> yeah, glad to be with you. it's already gorgeous behind us. i mean, we're in store for a really nice end to the weekend. here's a live look from san jose with that sunshine in some good fall foliage, too. in this picture just a nice start to our sunday temperatures right now we are warming through the 50s, close to 60 degrees in some spots. so we're in store for a nice afternoon. here's future weather, just partly cloudy skies, light winds throughout the day by about 1 p.m, we're getting into the 70 and our warmest spots. so if you like, yesterday, today's equally as nice, partly cloudy, 68in the city, hit about 730 in oakland, 75 in san jose, 72 in santa rosa

and concord. so the mild weather is here for the second half of the weekend. but we have cooler, cloudier and wetter conditions on the horizon. we'll detail that coming up in a few minutes stephanie. >> all right, drew, thank you. happening today, san francisco mayor london breed is set to attend an opening celebration for the asia pacific economic cooperation summit. the apec finance ministers gala is being hosted by us treasury secretary janet yellen. mayor breed is expected to attend. now the gala precedes the finance ministers meeting, which starts tomorrow. representatives from each of the member economies attending apec will discuss trade and investment across the region. the summit welcomes economic leaders from across the world, including president joe biden. events started at the moscone center this weekend. now some streets are already blocked off for security measures. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard gives us a look at the first events of the summit. i'm just trying to get. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. so just one block. that's all it is. just cross here. >> one lane of southbound

which is cooperation, human rights. >> the focus of this solidarity event attended by chinese dissidents. congressman mike gallagher, chairman of the select committee on china, says stakes will be high when two world leaders meet this week. and my concern and we were talking about it before is that when we have high level dialog like the one that's happening this week between xi jinping and joe biden, that we don't that human rights don't get thrown into the gutter in san francisco, cornell, bernard, abc seven news now getting around certain areas of the city will be tough. >> muni is no longer able to serve stops in the exclusive zones. those are the security zones set by the secret service which are mostly near the moscone center. some of the bay bridge off ramps are going to be closed due to the events taking place at the moscone center. they would normally feed traffic right into the security zone. the closures will start tuesday and go through friday. they'll start at 5:00 in the morning and end at 9:00 at night. every day

in the westbound direction. the fifth street off ramp is going to be closed. the fremont street and eighth street off ramps will remain open on eastbound. drivers won't be able to use the fourth street off ramp. the last san francisco exit will be at seventh street. now, aside from the ramps, one lane in each direction on the bridge itself will be closed. that closure will be continuous for four days, starting at 5 a.m. tuesday and lasting until friday night at 9:00. we've put together a day by day guide to apec, from street closures to official events, you can bookmark it on abc7 news.com and we are updating it whenever new information is released. now to the war between israel and hamas . taking a live look at the west wall in jerusalem. you can see its dark skies as it's roughly 700 and 6 p.m. and israel right now is daily. prime minister benjamin netanyahu continues to push back against international calls for a cease fire. he claims gaza's main medical

center is one of hamas's command posts. here's abc news reporter allison kosik. >> far too many palestinians have been killed. far too many have suffered, according to the hamas run health ministry, more than 11,000 palestinians have died since the war began this weekend. >> hezbollah taking responsibility for two attacks on israel. meanwhile, the idf continues its airstrikes on gaza and suspect hezbollah positions in lebanon. arab leaders met in saudi arabia on saturday condemning israel's handling of the war and calling for an immediate cease fire. prime minister benjamin netanyahu pushing back, saying israel's battle against hamas will continue with full force. several hospitals in gaza say that they have been under relentless bombardment. patients and medical staff trapped. >> there is no electricity. actually, there is no water. there is no food. so our team is exhausted. we can see actually the smoking, the smoke around the hospital. they hit everything around the hospital

and they hit the hospital many times. >> israel has portrayed shifa hospital as hamas's main command post. >> they have positioned all of their capabilities in around and beneath hospitals, saying militants were using civilians as human shields and had set up elaborate bunkers underneath the hospital claims both hamas and al-shifa staff have denied there is no siege. >> i repeat, there is no siege on the shifa hospital. the east side of the hospital is open on el-wadi street for the safe path of gazans who wish to leave the hospital. >> israel has been urging gazans to flee southward, opening up humanitarian corridors. the israeli military says more than 150,000 have fled in just the past few days. most of them on foot. but tens of thousands still remain in the north, where the fighting is the heaviest. alison kosik, abc news, new york. protests continue around the world because of the war.

>> nearly 300,000 people turned out for a pro-police opinion. massive rally in london on saturday. the protest is one of a growing number, all calling for a cease fire on abc's this week, national security adviser jake sullivan spoke to abc's jonathan karl this morning about the american hostage is believed to be held by hamas in. >> i have to be careful about what i say publicly on this because it is, of course, a delicate and sensitive negotiation. but the answer to your question is yes, there are ongoing negotiations, actions involving the israelis as the qataris and we, the united states, are actively engaged in this as well, because we want to make sure that we bring home those americans who have been taken hostage, as well as all of the other hostages as nine americans are still missing at this point. >> sullivan went on to say that president biden was not going to rest until every single one of those hostages can come home safely. well, new this morning, a death is being investigated

after a body was found at crissy field. we are told the us park service and the san francisco fire department responded around 630 this morning. the body was discovered in the east beach parking lot. we are still waiting for an update on this investigation. in the east bay, authorities are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting in san leandro. police say it happened in the parking lot of a chili's restaurant where a woman was found shot. she died a short time later. investigators are giving few details at this point, but they do say the victim and the gunman knew each other in vallejo. now, commotion and confusion at a high school football game. a nearby shooting raised concerns of an active shooter situation at vallejo high. the times herald reports one student ran onto the field seeking safety after being shot at a nearby gas station. he was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury. the school says it followed protocol until officials determined there was not an active shooter. there today, people looking for covid

treatment outside of their health care networks may end up having to pay for it. november 11th marks six months from when the federal covid health emergency ended. california law required health plans to continue covering covid vaccines , treatments and testing even for out of network care. for six months after it ended. now you might have to pay for out of network covid vaccines and treatment. state health officials suggest talking with your health insurance provider for low cost to no cost solutions. well, speaking of vaccines, critics say a fumbled rollout of the brand new rsv shot for babies has pediatricians worried. and frustrated. health officials say more supply is coming, but doctors worry it's not enough. the new shot to protect against rsv was approved earlier this year, but now doctors across the country say they are experiencing alarming shortages. they're frustrated with the manufacturer, the pharmaceutical company sanofi. the cdc is recommending clinicians administer the shot to the most

sexual assault charges. william monroe palmer also serves on the city's sentencing commission. details on the crime he's accused of have not been released yet. he's become an advocate after serving 31 years in prison, convicted in the attempted armed robbery of an off duty police officer. palmer is being held currently in the san francisco jail without bail. and antioch community groups want new leaders within the city's police department. no justice, no peace, no racist police organizers rallied in front of police headquarters on saturday. they want the acting police chief and president of the police officers union to step down. newly released documents show they signed off on the use of force by officers in certain cases. now, the fbi later determined the use of force was excessive. the officers involved were indicted in august on federal civil rights violations, more than $18 million. that's how much the

city and county of san francisco is getting to convert a hotel into permanent housing for the unhoused. the money is coming from governor gavin newsom's homekey initiative of a state program created to fund supportive housing. millions of dollars of grant money has already allowed a number of other bay area housing projects to move forward in the east bay. oakland will get over 15.5 million. san leandro more than 9 million. hayward and union city are getting nearly $9.7 million. the goal is to provide housing to people experiencing homelessness and get this, a report from the california association of realtors says housing affordability in california has now dropped to its lowest level since 2007. the association says that high borrowing costs and climbing home prices are the main reasons californians are having a harder time affording a home. fewer than 1 in 5 households in the state can afford to purchase a median priced, preexisting single family home, which now costs about $843,000. to afford

that, you will need an income of $221,000. now to commemorate veterans day, president joe biden visited arlington national cemetery in virginia yesterday. biden laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. the commander in chief recounted famous battles fought by us troops. biden called veterans the steel spine of this nation. he was joined by first lady jill biden and vice president kamala harris. numerous events were held around the bay area to mark veterans day from parades to celebrations, people found a way to salute the troops. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows us the sights and sounds of these tributes. this scene of stillness at san francisco's national cemetery. >> i always think about, you know, that the sacrifice, you know, and the losses. kirsi tiemroth is here on this veterans day in honor of her husband's ancestors who served in the navy. they like to come here every so often just to

think about it. you know, the family members and also their service and very interesting history actually. and from the cemetery in san francisco to parades in petaluma and san jose. thousands of people lining the streets. >> i'm thrilled. i'm just thrilled, this fantastic turnout. >> kay hartman comes from a long line of loved ones who have served. >> my mother was a coast guard and i brought her down to be in the parade for decades. and my father was a navy veteran. my husband's vietnam. >> and in the east bay, the uss hornet celebrated its 25th anniversary as a sea, air and space museum on a great day at the hornet. >> they had a lot of wonderful ways celebrating the heritage here in the history and celebrating our vets. >> we've had over 4500 people come today. it's i mean, it's spectacular for the people here. it's great for our veterans that work here. it's great for our staff and for our community.

>> and over in danville, an open house at the veterans memorial building. the celebration included a space themed pop up museum and a ceremony honoring veterans. >> we are so happy that we are able to put on events like this through the veterans, putting it on themselves. >> and meanwhile, back in san francisco, though, a veteran visiting from chicago takes a moment to remember. >> we're just out here celebrating veterans day. mark kelly served in the navy for 20 years and his father fought in the korean war. these people that gave their lives, they they gave everything and their families, you know, i feel very touched and i honor them. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> well, one of abc seven's very own received a special honor from the national academy of television arts and sciences. paula marcheski, our station's creative services director, was inducted in the 2023 silver circle for her work in the television industry since 1991. you see her here. she was one of

visibility. our air quality is in the green today and tomorrow. so here's how the day shapes up. we'll keep partly cloudy skies in the forecast. mild sunshine. that's the call this afternoon at 4 p.m. we'll stay in the mid 60s along the coast with a lot of sunshine away from the coast. we'll go into the upper 60s to lower 70s by about 4 p.m. and just note now your sun set coming at 5:00 pm. that means tomorrow low and for the next several weeks that sun will go down before 5 p.m. high today, 68 in the city, 70 in oakland, 72 in santa rosa, hit about 75. in san jose, 72. in antioch, 63. the high in half moon bay overnight tonight, partly cloudy conditions and temperatures dipping back down into the 40s and low 50 soquel's as we head into monday. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite high pressure hanging on for one more day, supplying us with the mild weather. then we've got this area of low pressure that will make its way down the coast this week and then sit offshore and supply us with those rain chances tomorrow , though, future weather. it's a dry day. monday. it's a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. then on tuesday,

early in the morning, start to see some scattered light showers move in here. it looks like the focus of the rain on tuesday really wants to stay in the north bay. that's where we'll likely track some of the moderate to heavier showers moving through. watch a time stamp by 1230 outside of the north bay. you're seeing a lot of sunshine on tuesday along the peninsula, the south bay and the east bay. so location very key as to how wet you're going to get to start out the series of storms. so tuesday will track some of the heavier showers in the north bay. and then those numbers really drop off as you head south. but more chances are in the forecast. but that low pressure sitting and spinning will bring us scattered showers wednesday, thursday and friday. of course, as we get closer to each and every day, we'll fine tune where the heaviest rain is going to fall. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you fine fall weather today. cooler, breezier tomorrow and then we'll see those scattered showers first in the north bay on tuesday and then we'll have those chances wednesday, thursday and friday. we'll be right back. >> grab the keys to a new fuel

streaming 24/7 on. >> thanksgiving is next week and the season of giving could really help our local food banks. one provider in the south bay tells us times are more challenging now than during the pandemic. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains. 60 boxes six minutes by staff and volunteers at second harvest of silicon valley. each box contains 25 pounds of fresh produce. it's a busy time at the food bank with thanksgiving being just two weeks away, we are providing frozen turkeys to many of our meal provider partners and we are also getting whole chickens. >> currently, 1 in 6 people in silicon valley are turning to second harvest for help. so currently only the need is at a peak level. >> it's the same we saw during the peak height of the pandemic. >> second harvest is very much a hub for food banks in san mateo

and santa clara counties. on average, they're helping to feed 500,000 people a month. the pandemic supports rental way in march of this year, and since then we have seen like an increased level of need since need has outpaced financial donations. they're now trying to rally the community to donate their time or money. >> it has like immediate impact. you know that when you donate to second harvest, our neighbors are getting help immediate, like tangible help. >> on thursday morning, volunteers packed 30,000 pounds of food in the afternoon it was 23,000. >> so that'll be about 960 families that are going to be affected, 3840 people. for many people during this holiday season, getting groceries is not as simple as making a list and going to the store. >> so this is a time we all want to enjoy those traditions and we want all our neighbors to have that feeling of family and hope and comfort during that time in

disaster, for it says, based on observations, there is a significant likelihood of a volcanic eruption in the coming days. the warming oceans worldwide are leading to the rapid melting of ice and glaciers. abc's seven news reporter dustin dorsey tells us about the new study by a san jose state researcher revealing how dire this situation is. >> the scenes of greenland and don't let its name fool you. the beauty doesn't come from the green, but from the white. >> the ice shelves and glaciers dating back millions of years ago. >> the sheer scale of the greenland ice sheet and the ice shelves is really astounding and really beautiful. >> but of course, the changes that we're seeing are also a bit concerning the ice shelves are melting. >> san jose state assistant professor mike wood and a group of international researchers use data from satellites, aircrafts and other models to see an unprecedented increase in melting across greenland's northern eight ice shelves. one third of the shelves total mass is gone.

>> we've seen an increase in ice melting on the undersides of these ice shelves over the past 20 years. and the reason for this increase was because of warming ocean waters around greenland. >> these shelves are an important part of the ecosystem because they hold glaciers on land and slow ice loss as they melt. researchers have seen the destabilization of nearby glaciers. this is really important because as we melt down these ice shelves, they act as ice dams that help to hold back that ice. >> so as they weaken, this permits in an increase of the ice that can make it to the ocean and that causes sea level rise and the impacts are felt globally, including here in the bay area. ice is added to the ocean in northern greenland. it melts and it finds its way through occurrence. so it really spreads across the entire world. of course, sea level rise is one of the most concerning components of our in our changing climate. and that's because most of our global population in like in the bay area lives along the coast. so to keep the world above water,
