[ laughter ] i voice asha.

[ laughter ] i'm doing okay. but i thought if i was lucky, i would just, you know, be lucky enough to do what i love. that would have literally just been making art. i'm doing that, right? i have gotten so much more than i ever bargained for. like i said, i watched so many disney movies throughout my life. there's always been a character or disney film that was there to remind me of the importance of believing in yourself. i never thought i would be bringing one to life. i certainly never thought it would look like this. nuts.

you know? it's overwhelming. it really is. wow. to be part of disney legacy. it's huge. i think there's not a single person on the planet that hasn't come in contact with the characters or their magic. and asha is magical. i think what i love about her is she's so selfless. her wish is not for herself. it's for everyone around her. and given the world we live in today, i think that's a beautiful thing. to have models for young people. >> speaking of magical, your voice, it just shines on the sound track. you were saying that the recording process was the most beautiful experience of your life. how so? >> it was. i am a very nervous vocalist. that is actually an area of my life that i work on, building my self-confidence every day.

hate to say it, george, for 30 years. i was a reporter in new york, "the new york post" which for years was his favorite newspaper. i don't know if it still is. he was a guy you could pick up the phone and, slow news day, he'd give you a story. >> the gift that's kept on giving for so many years. you have so many revelations in this book. it's hard to be startled by anything donald trump does. do you believe he could be reinstated even after joe biden takes office? >> this is truly mind blowing. he became enthralled with this idea that after he left the white house, that somehow all of this evidence was gonna come forward that was gonna force the supreme court to declare the 2020 election didn't happen, wasn't valid. they were going to eject joe biden from the white house and he would be able to go in.
8:49 am
the my fellow guy who pushed a lot of this stuff had an oddly specific date. he said it was going to happen august 13, 2021. what i realized, i knew when he was saying this back then. i realized reporting on this, he was obsessed with the idea and seemed to truly believe that he could make it happen. people around him were really worried about the fact that he was losing touch with reality. >> it's not just him spreading lies for the sake of baking that in. he actually believed this. >> it sure seemed that way. there was a big debate about whether or not he really knew he lost or came to believe he lost. but on this he seemed to believe that whatever the truth was in 2020, that he was going to somehow be reinstated. by the way, this lasted into last year. there was a very dramatic moment i describe in the book with a very conservative pro trump congressman mo brooks. this guy wore body armor to the president's speech on january 6th. as loyal as anybody. he got a call from trump demanding that he go out and publicly announce that biden needed to leave the white house and trump should be reinstated.
8:50 am
he refused. trump cut him off. took away his endorsement in a race. the guy ended up losing a republican primary. >> since then we've seen 91 different charges, felony charges against the former president. yet at the same time, he seems to have solidified his hold on the republican party. >> yes. he has found a new birth for his campaign in the cases against him. as i write in the book, his entire campaign and i really saw it just this past week. it has become a retribution campaign. a phrase steve bannon used said it goes back to the assassination plot the confederacy had against abraham lincoln. this is a very dark dark thing. we heard him refer to his opponents as vermin. >> adolf hitler talk. >> using language out of the third reich. he wants to eliminate and annihilate his enemies and get retribution. he tells his people they're

coming after me because their real target is you and i'm standing in the way. for the hard core base, it's working. he is seen as a victim. he doesn't really have a policy agenda so much as an agenda of getting revenge on his enemies and insisting on loyalty. >> how do you explain how that's worked with so many republican leaders? >> i think there are two really pivotal moments right after he left the white house. one famously is when kevin mccarthy went to visit him in mar-a-lago eight days after trump left the white house. giving him kind of a new life line back into the party. another really critical moment was when the chairman of the party faced a threat from donald trump on the day he left office. he threatened he was going to leave the party. he was going to create his own party. she begged him to stay and then threatened him to -- that they would stop paying his legal bills. they would take away his ability to raise money. it was going to cost him a lot of money.
8:52 am
he ended up not leaving. the question is, what would have happened if she had said good riddens? if kevin mccarthy said he is a disgraced former president and let's move on? the reason they made a different calculation, george, is they both believed that if trump moved away from the party, he would bring his hard core supporters with him and the republicans would not be able to win another election. >> he's determined now to win the presidency again, in large part to keep himself out of jail. >> it really is looking at two possible paths here. being elected again as president or the very real possibility he will go to prison. this is really -- he calls 2024 the final battle. it's really kind of apocalyptic the way he talks about it. listen to what he says. i think what's happened over the past year, you know, his campaign is almost a year old now. people have not really actually paid much attention to what donald trump is doing and saying now. there's been endless coverage of
8:53 am
the court case, the legal battles. but listen to what he's saying. he's saying this is the final battle. of course, that raises questions. you can see why he's doing it again. prison or the white house is quite a stark choice for him. what will his supporters do or think or act on if he loses? >> we'll find out over the next year. >> i asked bannon that. steve bannon i asked, aren't you worried about violence? he told me, no, because we're gonna win. >> jon karl, thank you very much. tired of winning donald trump the end of the grand old party is out tomorrow. we'll be right back.
