>> it is just remarkable. >> thank you, guys. coming up news for home buyers after mortgage rates hit a 23 year high in october. they have dropped. rebecca jarvis will have more coming up. we're going to begin with the israeli hamas war. israeli forces conducting a raid on gaza's largest hospital which they say hamas is using to support its military. matt gutman is there, where there's a protest demanding the release of those hostages. good morning, matt. >> reporter: robin, good morning. you can see several hundred of these marchers. the families of hostages who are in gaza right now. in gaza is where that israeli raid is on going at gaza's largest hospital. there are conflicted reports of whether there is active fighting happening there. the israeli military saying it dropped off medical supplies. doctors on the ground telling us the situation is still extremely dire. this morning the israeli military raiding the largest hospital in gaza, calling it a

precise and targeted operation against hamas in a specified area in the hospital. and releasing these videos they say show troops operating on the ground before entering the hospital where thousands of palestinians are believed to be sheltering according to the hamas run ministry of health, which also shared these images they say are from inside the hospital amid the raid. that ward filled with thick dust. though hamas denied an operation around the hospital, the pentagon saying it declassified u.s. intelligence supporting israel's claims about hamas' use of hospitals. >> we do have information that hamas and the palestinian islamic jihad uses some hospitals in the gaza strip, including the al shifa hospital, as a way to conceal and support their military operations and hold hostages. they have tunnels underneath these hospitals. >> reporter: within al shifa, the situation desperate. doctors telling us fuels and

supplies have run out. workers saying they were forced to use gardening tools and bare hands to bury scores of decomposing bodies in a mass grave. >> we have buried them from within the hospital. >> reporter: you have buried 180 bodies from the hospital in that mass grave? >> absolutely, yeah. >> reporter: it comes just a day after the israeli military took us deep into gaza to see a hamas tunnel that it said led into this children's hospital. outside that hospital we could hear the fierce fighting. inside israel claiming hamas had a command and control post in the bombed out basement. israel's chief military spokesman showing us another room where they believe hamas kept some of the hostages claiming hamas retrofit these rooms for the hostages. what makes you think this was a spot where somebody was held hostage? >> we are going to bring here a forensic team. the only reason i brought you here, you see the fighting outside. i'm taking a huge risk. tying hostages on a chair in the

basement. >> reporter: the children's hospital director denied israel's claims. a senior administration official telling us they believe the majority of the 239 hostages may be in southern gaza, not in those hospital tunnels. >> free them all! free them all! >> reporter: in washington, over 250,000 people in the nation's capital calling for the release of the hostages and marching for israel. our terry moran right there speaking to a woman whose 3-year-old grand niece was taken by hamas. >> she's now alone in gaza. >> i think today is an opportunity for all of us to come together and say we are united against terrorism. we are united against hate. and to really try to celebrate our humanity and what brings us together. >> bring them home now! >> reporter: you can hear them chanting now. they are demanding all of the hostages are brought home now. we understand there's progress being made on a deal with hamas that would bring a quarter of the hostages back. it could be two to three days away.

we understand the ball is now in the court of hamas officials in gaza. there's concern that that raid on the hospital could jeopardize this deal. george? >> matt gutman, thank you very much. now to president biden, set to meet with china's leader xi at a summit in san francisco today. chief white house correspondent mary bruce is traveling with the president. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, this is a high stakes and highly choreographed meeting. every detail meticulously planned for weeks. now the moment is almost here. we will be heading shortly to the summit site, where president biden and chinese president xi will sit down for the first time in over a year as biden tries to reshape this relationship amid mounting tension. we are told they are expected to talk for over four hours and they will cover a wide range of issues including growing economic competition, concerns over taiwan and chinese military aggression. also top of mind, the wars in ukraine and the middle east. biden is expected to urge xi to use influence over iran to try and stop tehran's proxies from attacking u.s. forces in the region.

but do not expect any major announcements to come today. the white house is already downplaying expectations. they are hoping for a win to restart military to military lines of communication. the president saying he wants to be able to pick up the phone and talk directly during times of crisis to try and prevent any future conflict. >> mary bruce, thanks. selina, you reported extensively from china. what is president xi looking for in this meeting? >> reporter: well, george, there is deep mistrust between the u.s. and china. china's leader xi is skeptical of america and believes the u.s. wants to contain china.bu come for several reasons. for one experts tell me that he wants reassurances from the u.s. will not support taiwan's independence. they want to slow down exports on semiconductor chips. third, xi wants to show the world that china's open for business. china's dealing with a deep economic slowdown, with rising

unemployment and a sharp slowdown in foreign investment. now president biden's goal for this meeting is to restore military to military communications and simply make it easier for these leaders to pick up the phone and talk to each other. xi shares that desire for stability, but beyond that, these leaders will not be able to resolve their fundamental differences. xi is an authoritarian leader trying to reshape the global order to benefit china's rise. george? >> let's go to michael. going to turn to the race to avert a government shutdown. last night the house passed a bill to keep the government running. now the senate has to act before friday's deadline. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: michael, good morning. congress is on track to avert a government shutdown. but i gotta tell you, much of the focus was not on that critical vote, but rather the behavior of members of congress. elbows allegedly thrown, words exchanged and a near fist fight in the senate. this morning congress is one step closer to averting a got shutdown.

>> the bill is passed. >> reporter: the house passing the short term bill to keep the government funded through early next year, but the new speaker, mike johnson, faced significant opposition from his own party. congressman jordan, are you going to be supporting this plan? >> i don't think so. i think we're surrendering. >> reporter: 93 republicans voting no. what did you tell those members who call your plan a mistake, who say it is a surrender? >> we're not surrendering. we're fighting. but you have to be wise about choosing fights. >> reporter: johnson's bill passing with more support from democrats than republicans. last month the same move cost kevin mccarthy his job, leading to weeks of paralysis and party in fighting. tensions clearly still running high. congressman tim burchett, one of eight republicans who ousted the former speaker, accusing mccarthy of elbowing him in the kidney. >> what kind of chicken move is that? you're pathetic, man. you are so pathetic. it was deliberate. it was just a cheap shot by a bully. >> reporter: mccarthy denying it ever happened. did you elbow him?

>> no, i did not elbow him. i would not elbow him. i would not hit him in the kidney. >> reporter: across the capital, a senate hearing on unions, the senator from oklahoma challenging the witness. the president of the teamsters to a physical fight. >> do you want to do it now? >> i'd love to do it now. >> stand your butt up. >> you stand your butt up. >> hold on. stop it. stop it. >> reporter: committee chair bernie sanders immediately jumping in. >> no, no, sit down. sit down. you are a united states senator. >> reporter: the scene leaving other lawmakers embarrassed. >> there are dumb days on capitol hill and there are dumber days on capitol hill. this is one of the dumbest i have seen in quite a long time. >> reporter: confrontations like that are becoming more and more common here on capitol hill. but lawmakers do have a lot of work to do. the first order of business for the senate will be getting that bill to avert a government shutdown on the floor before the deadline on friday, george. >> let's hope it gets done. thank you very much. now to the new volcano warning in iceland. officials say that

an eruption is very likely following thousands of earthquakes. foreign correspondent james longman is on the scene with the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, george. we're about as close as you can get to the town that was evacuated on friday. the volcano itself is in the plains behind me. we've been watching all morning as people driving down here, desperate to get back into town for one last chance. they are being given these chances to get back to their homes to pick up belongings they have left behind, including animals, pets that need to be rescued. they've got to be quick because the volcano could erupt at any moment. thousands of earthquakes. that's what officials say alerted them to what they call an imminent volcanic eruption and a significant likelihood it will happen soon. cracks in roads have opened up, steam pouring out of the ground as the heat intensifies in the southwestern part of the country. over 700 quakes have struck in just the last day, and more than 20,000 since october 25th. scientists say there's a nine

mile long stretch of magma bubbling underground threatening this small town. authorities have declared a state of emergency, evacuating nearly 4,000 people. >> we provide support and information when people are scared. they need that. >> reporter: our cameras seeing multiple eruptions over the years in iceland. will reeve up close and personal in 2021. >> look there, all that lava coming out. 2,000 degrees fahrenheit. >> reporter: back in 2010, another volcano erupted and disrupted air travel for days. much of the area could get flooded by lava. there are teams working around the clock to build a wall around a power station that powers the capital of iceland before the lava gets to it. clearly it's a race against time. robin? >> clearly is there, james. of course, we want everyone to stay safe. we're going to turn to the deadly chain reaction crash on a highway in ohio involving a charter bus that was transporting 54 high school students.

six people, including three teenagers, were killed. alex presha has the story for us. >> reporter: this morning investigators looking into what caused this fiery crash that left six people dead including three teens just east of columbus, ohio. >> we are being advised that there are children trapped on the bus. >> reporter: first responders rushing to the scene, urging students to jump out of the windows. seconds later an explosion. officials say a chain reaction caused five vehicles to collide. one of them was a semitruck slamming into this charter bus carrying a marching band. 17-year-old samantha bossler, a sax player, was on the bus. >> there was people coming up on us. we realized what happened and looked around. there was a lot of people ducking. >> reporter: of the three teens killed, the youngest was 15. police confirming at least three

other people were killed in a car that was also involved in the crash. and more than a dozen others were taken to hospitals. samantha says she's okay. >> i just happened to be in the right seat. >> reporter: overnight the charred remains of the bus towed from the scene. now, the injured were taken to seven area hospitals. ntsb has a team on the ground in ohio investigating. and the truck company for that semi involved said that it's cooperating with authorities. michael? >> unfortunate tragedy there, alex. thank you very much. we're going to turn to thousands of starbucks workers set to strike at hundreds of stores across the country. whit johnson is at the times square location with more on what's being called the red cup rebellion. good morning, whit. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. it's expected to be the biggest strike ever for und starbucks baristas. that red cup rebellion is planned tomorrow on red cup day, a massively popular promotional event when starbucks gives out the holiday reusable cups. typically one of the most profitable days of the year for

the company. thousands of unionized workers from hundreds of locations across the country are set to walk off the job. they're accusing starbucks of refusing to bargain over staffing and other issues at a time when the company announced record sales. the union representing the baristas is demanding starbucks turn off mobile ordering on future promotion days saying the influx of customers without additional staffing creates unnecessarily stressful working conditions. starbucks releasing a statement saying, we are aware that workers united has publicized a day of action this week. we remain committed to working with all partners and alleging that workers united hasn't agreed to meet to progress contract bargaining in more than four months. so both sides blaming each other. this, of course, comes on what's been a record year for organized labor from the auto industry to actors and writers in hollywood, workers across the country demanding change. robin? >> all right there. thank you, whit. now to the mortgage rate drop

after they hit a 23 year high in october. rebecca jarvis is here with what it means if you're in the market for a new home. >> good morning. anyone who is shopping for a home knows that headlines that are positive are hard to come by, but here we are. a few weeks ago mortgage rates were above 8%. today they're 7.4%. you have that latest report on inflation to thank for this. with inflation cooling, it reduces the need for the fed to hike rates more, which in turn makes mortgage rates cheaper. we want to put that into real terms for you. on a $300,000 mortgage at 8% you would have been paying about $2,214 a month. at today's rate, your monthly drops to $2,077 a month. that's more than $100 in savings. not quite where things were back in 2021 where rates were 3%. back then you would have been paying about $1,000 a month. we're not quite there.

waiting to be transferred to tallahassee. nearly a decade after a prominent fsu law professor was shot and killed in a murder for hire plot, this morning a shocking new development. >> you were arrested on a warrant from leon county, florida. >> reporter: his former mother donna adelson now facing murder charges. the 73-year-old arrested at miami international airport monday night after attempting to board a one-way flight to vietnam. >> she was apprehended getting on that plane. she had literally checked in and was walking into the plane. >> reporter: 41-year-old markle was gunned down in front of his tallahassee home in 2014 while in a bitter custody battle with his wife who wanted to relocate their two boys to south florida to be closer to her family. but markell refused. that's why prosecutors say the adelson family took matters into their own hands. >> did anyone here have a motive

to want him dead? >> reporter: just last week wendy's brother charles adelson was convicted for the murder. the florida dentist also found guilty of soliciting and conspireing with two hit men to carry it out. now prosecutors say their mother donna helped arrange that murder plot, too. in this police surveillance video an under cover fbi agent confronts adelson and demands more money after the murder. investigators say she later made this call to her son. >> i had paperwork hand delivered to me. >> does it involve me or other people? >> obviously other people. >> reporter: according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by abc news, donna spoke to charles in multiple jail calls over the past week where she told him she was getting things in order creating trust and making sure her grandchildren are taken care of. she even discussed plans for suicide or fleeing to a nonextradition country. soon after prosecutors claim she booked that one-way flight to vietnam with a layover in dubai.

while research is still under way, vets calling the illness highly contagious and in some cases fatal. most reported symptoms are similar to those of a typical kennel cough including coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge and lethargy. >> instead of that dry cough where the dog felt good, it was this wet cough where the dog felt sick. >> reporter: idaho dog owner wendy brown saying her three golden retrievers each started showing symptoms earlier this month. >> dewy started doing huffing. also seemed to feel quite lethargic. not long after bridge began to exhibit the symptoms. >> reporter: at first brown thought it was just a typical kennel cough, but when the symptoms didn't go away, she knew it was something more serious. >> the vet started him on a ten day cycle of docacyclene. today is day ten and he is not better. >> reporter: brown said she's still in the dark as to what caused the illnesses in the first place. experts say dogs showing any signs of consistent coughing is a good reason to get them checked out.

co-anchor deborah roberts is joining us on what they found. good morning, deb. >> good morning, robin. it's pretty alarming. you may remember frightening stories about contaminated water in flint, michigan. turns out there's also a concern about safe drinking water in our nation's schools. our team zeroed in on some complaints and discovered in one district just 40 miles outside new york city, kids haven't been able to use their school water fountain for years. francis, a high school junior in spring valley, new york, is focused on sports and class activities. school is a happy place, except for when you're thirsty. why can't you use the water fountain? >> the reason we can't use the water fountain is there's contamination in our water. >> how long has this been going on? >> since i was in the 4th grade. >> for seven years now, francis, along with 10,000 other students in his school district have used school provided water coolers or brought their own bottles because of dangerous lead in the water equipment.

>> if a child is exposed to lead over a long period of time, it can cause brain damage. >> it's unclear how widespread is problem is nationally, with no federal regulation requiring the majority of schools to test lead in their waters, and state requirements vary. >> unfortunately, schools' regulations is mostly voluntary. mostly folks don't know what's going on out of any of the taps at their schools. >> we wanted to get a clearer picture, so our abc news investigative team joined with eight stations across the country to get information from other school districts, reaching out to more than 10 across 11 states. 41 agree to answer questions via e-mail or over the phone, and the responses on what they're doing to track lead in their water vary. with some saying they're part of a voluntary testing program. others saying they plan to test soon. 15 school districts or companies that tested on their behalf did agree to speak with our team, but seven declined our request,

too much, george. >> so how do you solve that problem? >> couple things you can do here. automate your savings especially that emergency fund to cover six months of expenses. instead of spending the raise, invest all the additional money into a 401k. make it automatic. if you are going to indulge make a budget so you are really aware of what you're spending so you don't go overboard. the last thing you want is a raise to lead to more credit card debt, especially when credit cards are so expensive. >> i can remember one time my mom said, girl, you got champagne taste on a coke budget. [ laughter ] woke me up. >> you solved that problem, too. auntie. that's what people call me mommy and auntie. grown men call me mommy and auntie. the joy is in just reminding people that i'm an act core, you know? that i can transform and i can be something different. >> i know, tom, when you and many in the cast met this woman for the first time, she was in full makeup and hair. she was in full villain mode. what was that like? >> yeah. i mean, obviously, just knowing that viola is coming to the set. she's one of my heroes. i have been following her for a long time. i was quite intimidated to begin with. then she came on in full costume. this incredible monologue. there were 300 people clapping at the end. then we break for lunch and have a chat and i realize she is just the best person in the world. she still had her fake eye in. terrifying. i definitely was fearful that i was going to get eaten alive by the fans. they've been nothing but welcoming. i found that both the creative team who returned from the previous film and the fans alike have all been incredibly welcoming, incredibly joyous and joyful. we all had dinner the other night. it does feel like -- it's a big project. but a little family. >> it's funny you said fan as a teen. i wasn't a teenager, but i was a fan. [ laughter ] i'm still a fan. rachel, we hear you sing throughout the movie. you're not a stranger to singing, but how different is it to sing as lucy gray? >> it's an amazing opportunity to get to use a different part of your instrument. getting to kind of harness the different sound of the country, folksy folk singer is a gift as an actor. delicious to get to bite into that. also to have an accent and do all of the different things she gets to do within the film. the music is home to me, but this was an added element that was really exciting. >> and you pulled it off so

incredibly well. >> thank you. >> i know everybody has probably an inspiration when they're going into a certain role. when i found out what your inspiration, you were told, was for your character, it was a little different than i was expecting. >> what was my inspiration? >> willie wonka? >> that's what francis lawrence said. i'm gonna get him for that. >> oh. [ laughter ] >> did he tell you that? >> no, he did not tell me that. he did not tell me that. my inspiration was just the book by suzanne collins, which when i read it, i had to put it down a couple times. i'm an empath. every level of violence, i feel everything. which made it more of a challenge to sort of transform into this sadist. to a sadist. i mean, i did all the work, too. a narcissistic sadist. >> well put.

well put. >> it is a dark franchise. which means, you know, we have a video of someone getting their groove on. beyonce dancing a little bit in between some takes here. how did you all keep the set light? how do you enjoy yourself from slipping into the darkness? >> just like that, really. [ laughter ] i just ate. you have to have laughs. you have to remind yourself the first time you wanted to be an actor, which was just to play. to play with your imagination. >> location there being there, how was that? >> oh my goodness. >> it's beautiful. he's one of the new department heads on the movies.

that didn't work on the original. getting to work on that location, all of these historic land marks in germany and in poland. it adds to the experience of an actor. but also when you get to do the recreational things on the weekends and your time off, it's amazing. >> i had high triglycerides when i came back home. [ laughter ] and, yeah, yeah. >> you get a classic villain anthem. >> yeah. you know it's funny. it's called this is the thanks i get. someone said this will be the new mom anthem which i thought

mediocrity just slapped me in the face around 15 and i realized that wasn't happening. huge don mattingly fan. >> oh, yeah. >> donny baseball. so i wanted to be don mattingly. that didn't work out. i couldn't grow facial hair until i was 20. [ laughter ] so i just -- did the next best thing. >> it worked out. >> yeah. god willing. god willing. >> how did you get into acting from that? >> i grew up in a family, bunch of actors. my grandmother was an actress. the other day i went to this book reading and this old gentleman came up to me an gave me this gift. it was a photograph of my grandmother on "life" magazine from 1940. >> oh, wow. >> wow. >> so my family goes back, you know? my father has had a sag card since '64. and my mother was an actress. so it was all in my family. anyway, i wanted to play sports. didn't work out. in my senior year in high

school, i was a big reader. loved school. i was doing waiting for gaudot. a seminar. an english seminar. one of the project, part of it was to put on the first act of the play. i put it on and enjoyed it. it was kind of like, i think i get this. i never really knew it until then. >> we learned something. >> thanks, george. thanks, pal. we are back on gma with a powerful story of perspective and friendship. after losing his leg from an ied explosion in iraq, retired lieutenant colonel greg gadsen met journalist terese and together the two chronicled his story of incredible resilience, turning it into a book, a warrior's journey towards peace and purpose. they are joining us now. thank you both for joining us. greg, i know this book, we've had a relationship for a long time. this is very personal journey for you. it's been a long recovery for you.

what made you want to share this very personal account of your life? >> the first thing, i'd say when teresa and i started, it was something cathartic. we had gotten to develop a friendship. i was willing to share it with her. as i began to work through my own struggles and journal and all that, it was very helpful to be able to talk about it. didn't start -- never imagined it ever being published, but a friend of mine, my best friend, said i think you guys should publish the book. >> here we are. here we are. terese, what about greg's story made you want to tell it? >> it's a positive. we need positive stories. it's a little bit about the military and it's about, little bit about football. it's a lot about recovery an redemption. >> yeah.

waypoint, greg, what is a waypoint? how does it describe your recovery an your life's journey? >> well, for me a waypoint is -- oftentimes there's no straight line to any destination. and you have these intermediate points that you kind of navigate through. for me, they're about focusing on where you are. about being present and not really ultimately worrying about your destination. it's really -- that's what i had to do. i had to focus on now when i was recovering. i had no imagination of a future. my legs weren't coming back. and so i had to be present. >> you were very -- you've been very present in my life for quite a long time. your former west point teammate became a teammate on the giants. asked you to come mentor us my last season in the nfl. we won the super bowl. that was just months after your injury. how did you find the strength to

do that? >> well, i think every day we have a chance to be our best self. that's all i could be is my best self. that's the first time i had a chance to really talk to anybody outside the army. my teammate asked me to help and i did the best i could. >> your best was good. we need you back. we need you back in the worst way right now. terese, what did this experience with greg teach you about how we can, as a nation, better serve our injured veterans? >> i think that it's important to remember that the wars may be over, but the injuries are not. and the transition is not. and the suicide rate is very high. and we need to make sure that those who need it can get care. >> i want to pose that same question to you. >> michael, i would say this. our government has the lead responsibility for taking care

of our veterans, or to assist them so they can take care of themselves. we come from society and we turn back to society. we need the assistance of our community, local, state, government, nonprofits. 'cause what we're doing is we're securing our future. when we don't have young men and women that will put their lives on the line in the future, then we're gonna be in a bad place. >> i agree with you on that. i know we just celebrated veteran's day. i want to thank you. thank you for your service. thank you for this book, and just for being inspirational, not only in my life, but so many people who will read your book and find some joy and comfort in something. get something that they need out of it. >> well, thank you for having us, michael. it's really special to be here with you today. you are certainly part of that journey, a big part. >> get back over to the giant, help us win another super bowl. finding way points it is available now.
