moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> he and i agreed that each of one of us could pick up the phone call directly and would be heard immediately. >> open communication with china. one of the key elements president biden says was discussed and agreed upon during his long meeting today with the in the bay area with china's president xi jinping. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley live on the roof of our building at abc seven overlooking the exploratorium and the site of that huge party hosted by president biden. now getting underway. although without president biden at the moment, he is just now probably leaving woodside having concluded a news conference that we brought you just a few minutes ago on abc seven news at five. so he is making his way up now to san francisco guests, however, for this party started arriving at around 430 this afternoon. uh- the event itself started at 5:00. invitees include apec leaders and delegates as well as
6:01 pm
local dignitaries and people in the community as well. president biden is expected to address the crowd at 730 tonight. however, that probably will be a little late because he is running late. here's a live look at the arrivals for the party. all the pomp and circumstance of an event of this magnitude and international event like this in the rain not dampening anyone's spirits, but certainly bringing out some umbrellas. as you can see, dignitaries from all 21 member economies are here at this reception. people in the community, important leaders, and also important political figures from around the state as well. now, by 5 p.m. today, protests had gathered at the roadblocks set up along the embarcadero at broadway. all very much expected the number of demonstrations continue to grow here. this is as close as they can get to the exploratorium. this is where the check in location is for party guests. some people were laying down, as you can see, on the sidewalk, refusing to move. others held
6:02 pm
signs asking for a ceasefire in the war between israel and hamas. very much. one of the key topics we're hearing from protesters about the last few days as this conference got underway, we've seen at least two protesters get arrested. uh- there is a large number of san francisco police here as well as something like a thousand highway patrol officers that have come in from around the state to help control the situation, make sure everyone is safe. now, as i said, the abc seven news building is located right across the street, literally from the exploratorium , a stone's throw away. here's a live view from our roof camera up here to give you a good vantage point of what is direct behind me. looking across from the embarcadero, i should point out, you can't see it from this picture, but the embarcadere itself, of course, is closed to traffic in this section. and there is a large steel fence that's probably 8 or 10ft high running down to the embarcadero in front of that building to keep people away and because of this event, it is closed between broadway and battery street. here's the map to show you where
6:03 pm
for this stretch of the embarcadero is closed. this will reopen tomorrow. this section. but for the moment, it is closed . and let's go now live to abc7 news reporter j.r stone. he also has a very good look at the gala. the proceedings below j.r. >> dan, i was going to talk all about the spectacular views from here on the roof which we do have those views, but we also have a lot of rain. it is very wet outside. on one side of me you can see the financial district of san francisco and then on the other side where those check points were the ones that dan talked about there. that is where i can hear the protesters in the distance and i can hear them chanting now, also down on the street as you look at that security checkpoint, just keep in mind just a little while ago, this line was a very long one and people were coming through there to get into the party. but i think that rain really pushed things ahead. and then you have the front entrance right down here. now, i do want
6:04 pm
to go to some of the video because over the course of the last hour, it has been a busy one. when it comes to getting these dignitaries inside this party. now, you almost have the feel of a red carpet event here. but the difference that you have when you have a red carpet event, people often pull right up. they've seen in the lights, they wave to people they might take pictures or talk to reporters. this is a different atmosphere. these dignitaries, these prime ministers and presidents, they come in with numerous chp officers, with private security and they are being pushed into the back area behind a lot of these cargo containers that have been set up. they've set up at least nine cargo container cars for security over the course of the past week. and so those dignitaries come in and they take them right behind those containers. and so you don't even see those individuals make their way in. you just see that large entourage of people making their way into this party tonight. and i will say a lot of people have asked, will the chinese president xi be here? well, which leaders will be
6:05 pm
here? what leaders won't be here? they have kept it pretty tight lipped on who will be here and who won't be here. we do know president biden will be here. and we also know that he just wrapped up talking a little while ago. so it's going to take some time for him to get back to san francisco just because of this weather. dan? yeah, now back to, you know, question gwen stefani will also be here performing tonight for the attendees. >> j.r, have you seen any of the dignitaries on a personal level while you've been watching? >> dan great question. i have not, but i have been talking with people in the community. one woman told me she's from singapore. she's been here 22 years. her and her food truck, they were able to cater the event for the singapore prime minister. prime minister lee, last night. and it was a memory she'll never forget. >> what an honor and a thrill for her. thank you, j.r, very much. well, the top headline at apec today, that huge high stakes and very important meeting between president biden and china's president xi jinping. it took place in woodside at filoli garden. it
6:06 pm
was a roughly a four hour meeting, said to be very productive and abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has been covering that part of the story from woodside. he joins us live. zach yeah, we're just up a mile from where the meeting took place. >> it's pretty dark out here now, but there's still a strong law enforcement presence by chp. there were so many people out here earlier, hundreds of people out here either in support or protesting president xi's visit. but people from around the world have been looking to this meeting and what might come out of it. and we finally heard from president biden following that four hour long meeting just at a half hour ago. let's take a listen to what president biden had to say about that meeting he called constructive and productive. >> i welcome the positive steps we've taken today, and it's important for the world to see that we're implementing the approach in the best traditions of american diplomacy. we're talking to our competitors just may blunt with one another. so there's no misunderstanding as a key element to maintaining global stability and delivering
6:07 pm
for the american people. and in the months ahead, we're going to continue to preserve and pursue high level diplomacy, the prc and both directions us to keep the lines of communication an open, including between president xi and me. he and i agreed that each of one of us could pick up the phone call directly and would be heard immediately. >> and that was a main goal of president biden going into this meeting. we heard from him yesterday. he said that he would define success as building that better communication, having that military to military communication again, biden said that he and ji got to restart, cooperate to encountering narcos ticks. they got to talk about the fentanyl crisis and the production of those precursors to fentanyl. those precursors, the chemicals that are produced in china. china, he says, is taking action on that. biden also said that following these talks, the us and china will have experts coming together to talk about risks associated with artificial intelligence to determine what's useful, what's dangerous. they also discussed the war in ukraine conflict in gaza and, of course, taiwan.
6:08 pm
biden said that he stressed the importance of peace and stability there. right now, though, it appears there is still some tension around that subject. now of course, this meeting lasted for several hours and long before it. and even just under an hour ago, there were hundreds of people, like i said, just up the road from where that meeting took place. some here to welcome president g. a lot of people here to welcome him, but a lot of people also here criticizing this. again, so many people focusing on this meeting. now, the law enforcement presence out here is still strong. chp, we aren't sure if we're going to see the motorcade come behind us at any point right now or not. but again, this meeting was something that president biden is defining as successful and we could expect to see more headlines coming out as a result of this headlines and developments. we will continue to track, of course. but right now, live in san mateo county, zach fuentes, abc seven news. all right, zach, thank you very much. >> as you saw in zach's piece, protesters gathered outside the gardens where biden and ji met today. we've seen protesters all around san francisco on a variety of topics. so far, no

chinese president xi, but they're sharing their protests in a different way, holding their signs in silence while practicing falun gong. these people are so peaceful, but they have been, you know, severely persecuted in china. >> we know there are like over 20, 21 countries and the leaders will be here. i want to let them know that. okay. so the persecution is still going on and people really need to know, you know, speak out and again tonight here at the ferry building, there were protesters calling for a cease fire in gaza. >> hundreds of children's shoes are being displayed here along with children's art. organizers say that's a tribute to all those killed in gaza. we're live here in san francisco. suzanne phan abc7 news. all right, suzanne, thanks very much. >> passionate people making their points and their voices heard on so many issues. i want to turn now to abc7 news reporter luz pena for another perspective on this. loose >> that's right. activists have

been protesting in downtown san francisco since 7 a.m. today and you can still see a small group of them waving led lights behind us as well as law enforcement blocking several streets leading up to moscone center. pablo pablo neruda, hundreds of activists take to multiple streets of downtown san francisco, blocking traffic and trying to stop apec attendees from entering the summit, or activists who are prepared to lock down even to get arrested if it comes to that for the objective of delaying the ceo summit as much as possible for four hours, a human chain was created to disrupt one of apec's main entry points where ceos were meeting. >> in that meeting, they plan to cut more free trade deals that will poison the planet and drive wages down and cut jobs from people to no to apec. >> coalition includes about 150 antiwar climate and labor organizations, and it led the

group that protested for multiple causes. >> and we were really successful . we were able to cause disruptions across all of the traffic throughout san francisco, make a statement that we as filipino people, as workers, as youth, as women, really oppose the decisions that are being made and trade deals that are being brokered as well at apec. >> as a motorcade was escorted by chp officers past second street, another group of activists with a new federal state of china movement lined up another apec entry point. >> so we're here to send a message to xi. this is not the place he should be. he's a dictator. okay. so he's a totalitarian dictatorship. and the democ democracy and freedom does not have any room for him. and so we're here just to send him a message that we are absolutely wanted to take him down with the global spotlight on san francisco and more than 500 people dying on these streets from fentanyl so far this year. >> today's meeting between the two world power leaders could be crucial for the us to put
