seven news now. ceasefire now. >> ceasefire now. >> we were watching all morning long this traffic nightmare. yesterday, dozens of protests are shutting down the bay bridge for hours. now at five, the impact of that shutdown under the backdrop of the apec summit inside apec. >> president biden and his administration inking deals to benefit the economy and the environment. why one tech ceo pulled out of his much anticipated panel discussion at the summit. last minute an update out of gaza this morning. >> the israeli military claims
5:01 am
to have found evidence of tunnels underneath the largest hospital there. how these new findings could impact hostage negotiations. >> and it is time to start the countdown. just six days left until thanksgiving, but tsa says we can expect to see holiday travel rush starting today. >> that's because people are just taking all of next week off yesterday week. >> good for you. yes. for the rest of us. good morning. this friday, november 17th. >> yes. let's start the check of our forecast with drew. >> good morning. so we're dry to start out there this morning. we will have showers returning again this evening. here's live doppler seven, the sweep over the past hour. you can see we do have showers offshore that will remain offshore this morning. so we're not anticipating any wet weather until later on this afternoon and this evening on the abc. seven storm impact scale, it is a level one light system. we're tracking again with scattered showers and isolated downpours cause later on this afternoon, there is the isolated chance of a thunderstorm popping up and it will create slick roads and some breezy conditions as you go hour
5:02 am
by hour on future weather. this morning, it's pretty cloudy. we are mild in the upper 50s and lower 60s. by 11 a.m. we're well into the 60s and then by 2 p.m, we'll start to see scattered showers moving into the region that will last through the rest of the evening and continue into saturday. so today we start out dry. we'll have those scattered showers in the afternoon. we'll take a closer look at that saturday rain chance coming up in about eight minutes. but let's check in with jobina and see how we're doing with traffic this morning. >> thank you, gio. all right. in the words of boys to men, we have come to the end of the road with traffic drama due to apex. so one thing to note, this is going to be the last big event at chase center this week. that will be really running alongside apec. that is the lauryn hill concert. ms. lauryn hill, to be exact. 7:30 p.m. so make sure muni you know that you can take that if you have a chase center ticket. it's free all day, not long, not just when you're going to chase center but also for our westbound and eastbound lanes on the bay bridge, there was a lot
5:03 am
going on yesterday, but i just want to point out that we still have one lane closed in each direction that'll be in place until today at 9 p.m. and that will reopen also tonight at nine, we will see the westbound and off ramp for a fish street there in the eastbound off ramp for fourth street reopen as well . so that is some good news. and then these impacted muni stops around san francisco specifically surrounding moscone center and yerba buena gardens will start to slowly improve there. and then lastly, of course, we are still continuing this message. if you need to travel into san francisco, all of these maps, transit services are running their normal schedules. >> reggie aqui jobina. after today, apex going to be an x factor. >> hey, i should have done that. oh, i like it. >> i had a couple more minutes to think about it. >> let's talk about what is happening today. president biden has a few more agenda items on his itinerary before closing out apec in just a few hours at 10:00, the president is going to have a bilateral meeting with
5:04 am
the mexican president obrador. that's happening at the moscone center. then an hour later, president biden will host the apec leaders retreat. that's where he'll officially transfer the apec chair to next year's summit. host peru, the peruvian president will be there to accept at 120 this afternoon. wheels are expected to be up on air force one. president biden set to leave the bay area first heading to philadelphia, then eventually a stop in delaware for the night. the president scored a trade victory at the summit announcing an agreement to prevent supply chain disruptions between 13 country. his japan and south korea, india and singapore are among those 13 apec member economies in this agreement. the deal also has provisions to combat corruption and transition these economies toward green energy. >> if we had this agreement in place, we're talking about today, we would not have had to lay off so many auto workers because lack of semi conductors and many other examples. meanwhile there was some controversy surrounding tech leader elon musk absence from
5:05 am
yesterday's summit. >> he was supposed to speak on a panel about ai, but us special presidential envoy for climate ambassador john kerry took must place. apex says the official reason for the tech billionaires absence was a scheduling conflict. abc7 news is your station when it comes to apex 2023, our complete coverage is everything you need to know. you can find it on the front page of our website abc7 news.com or your abc7 news bay area app. >> a few people got hurt during dueling protests yesterday at third and market streets in san francisco. critics of the chinese communist party crossed paths with supporters of china police created a line in the middle of third street to keep opposing protesters apart. that confrontation was far from the most disruptive of the day. of course, we are talking about that bay bridge back up. this is a live look right now. this morning, a much different scene from the deadlock we saw yesterday day there as pro
5:06 am
palestinian protesters blocked the bridge for several hours. thousands of protesters gathered on the bridge calling for a cease fire in gaza. they got out of their cars, chained their arms together, blocking all lanes in the westbound direction, and some even threw their keys into the bay. >> i don't necessarily call it a peaceful protest. when you stop tens of thousands of people from being able to get to the hospital and being able to get to school and being able to get to work, signs, banners, demonstrators sprawled across the bridge using apec as an opportunity to get their message across to world leaders. >> and the reason why today was important to us is because joe biden is in town for the apec conference and we need joe biden to know that he has probably the most power in this situation. >> also stuck in that backup, at least three transplant organs heading to ucsf medical center. you want your organ to work?
5:07 am
>> well, when you put it in. and the longer the organ is preserved in between the donor and the recipient, the slower the organ wakes up. so this impacts the early organ function after transplant. the longer it's preserved. >> ucsf doctor garrett rowell also says at least one surgery had to be canceled because the patient got stuck on the bridge. chp eventually cleared the bridge around noon in a separate protest. >> pro-palestinian activists gathered at uc berkeley to call for a cease fire in gaza. you can see they hung a banner down the side of the building. the message, cease fire now, free gaza. the chronicle reports there were no israeli flags or pro-israel supporters visible near this protest. new developments in the israel hamas war. israel claims it now has proof that hamas has a tunnel network underneath gaza's largest hospital, jobina. there are also growing concerns about the release of hostages. >> yes, reggie, so what we're learning here this morning is that a 65 year old israeli hostage has been found dead. it's not clear how or when she
5:08 am
was killed. as for those tunnels, you mentioned israel defense forces released this video to back up its claims of hamas having tunnels underneath medical facilities. it claims the tunnel leads to a hamas command post below the al-shifa hospital, where thousands are trapped with little food and water. the idf says it also found a vehicle at the hospital filled with guns, ammunition, knives and handcuffs. hamas denied those claims. the idf also says it found laptops at al-shifa containing photos and videos of hostages. as secretary of state antony blinken spoke about the hostage situation and what the us believes israel should do next. >> we're focused on this in tensely and look, i'm hopeful that we can bring people home. we've been very clear that there can't be a reoccupation by israel of gaza, just as gaza can't continue to be used as a platform to launch terrorist attacks. so sources tell abc news that hopes for an imminent release appear to be less likely
5:09 am
. >> see, israel and hamas remain at odds over how many hostages liz would or maybe should be freed. kumasi. >> thank you. jobina thanksgiving travel kicks off today. the tsa is predicting its busiest holiday travel season ever. it expects to screen some 30 million passengers between now and november 28th. abc's seven news reporter lena howland at sfo with a look at what we can expect. how's it looking right now, lena hey, kumasi good morning to you. >> so far this morning. already we've been seeing a steady line of travelers being dropped off this morning for their flights and heading inside. that's because tsa says today is the start of the holiday rush of travelers heading out for their thanksgiving trips. now the tsa also says that they are predicting this to be their busiest holiday travel season ever, up by 9% compared to just last year. and while things might seem busy now, the busiest days for travel before thanksgiving are next tuesday
5:10 am
and wednesday, with more than 2.5 million passengers screened each day. but the peak day is actually sunday after thanksgiving as folks begin to head home. experts say positive impacts may last longer than just these peak travel times. the higher number of people traveling could mean a brighter long term outlook. >> like even in an economy that is certainly very unstable and very uneven for a lot of people, there is still a lot of demand for people who want to go somewhere for thanksgiving. so it's a certainly a very good sign about at least the bay area economy overall. the though many are traveling by air, triple a says millions more are expected to drive uh. >> they're projecting 49.1 million americans will get behind the wheel, which is up by 1.7% compared to last year. remember, if you are headed out to the airport during this holiday travel season to give
5:11 am
yourself some extra time, get here at least two hours before your flight and during this thanksgiving travel season. remember that certain foods such as gravy, cranberry sauce, wine, jam and preserves, those must all sadly be checked in your checked bag. they cannot go through security as they are considered to be liquids or gels for now. reporting live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. thank you, lena. >> if you are traveling across the country today, we are watching a cold front that will bring showers and thunderstorms to the northeast, east and the mid-atlantic. that could cause some travel delays around new york city. even into boston across much of the middle part of the country. it is quiet, if not cool. we're expecting some showers later on this evening. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite this low finally on the move. it has been just sitting off our coast all week. it will move into northern california late tonight to early tomorrow morning. and bringing a renewed chance of showers and some storms even into saturday. so right now, we're in the 40s
5:12 am
and in the 50s to start out your friday morning, we are totally dry out there, but we do have a lot of cloud cover up above. we'll keep those clouds throughout much of the day. it's a mostly cloudy morning. then in the afternoon, we have those chance of scattered showers out there. temperatures mainly in the 60s for daytime highs. so an evening chance of a shower today and then tomorrow, it's pretty much on and off throughout the entire day. by saturday evening, we're drying out. and that leads to a beautiful finish to the weekend. we'll take a closer look at these rain chances. we'll go hour by hour on future weather. reggie. coming up in about nine minutes. drew, thank you. >> drama at apec. coming up, the beef between world leaders and the fashion dilemma at this year's summit. >> and major league baseball owners unanimously agree the a's should move to vegas. we hearing from oakland mayor shengtao about that decision. >> the damaged highway in la is actually going to be finished a lot sooner than expected. the announcement coming as a relief ahead of

massive fire. governor newsom says interstate ten will be reopen by tuesday. he initially said it would take 3 to 5 weeks to finish those repairs as we've doubled what we've doubled, we've doubled the crews, we've doubled down on on our efforts here. >> materials and supplies have presented themselves without any hindrances or any problems. things continue to move favorably in our direction. >> the fire badly damaged the freeway. it burned through numerous wooden pallets, trailers and vehicles stored below that raised interstate. authorities believe someone intentionally set the fire. if you're an ace fan who is upset over yesterday's unanimous vote by league owners to allow the team to move to oakland and cover your eyes for the next five seconds because as this is what it looked like in las vegas yesterday on the sphere, the
5:16 am
team's logo projected on it with las vegas as yeah, okay >> so as i mentioned, the owners voted yesterday to allow the move and also to waive the relocation fee. the league's commissioner telling reporters yesterday it's nothing personal. i have no issue with the city of oakland or the mayor or, you know, we tried very hard to make a deal in oakland. >> we did that out of respect for the fans in oakland. >> the outcome of the vote is extremely disappointing, not only as is the leader of the city of oakland, but i know that it's going to be hard for the fans as well too. and so but we all know that there is a long way before shovels are in the ground and that there are a number of unresolved issues surrounding this move. >> there are some hurdles the a's still need to clear the nevada teachers union filed a lawsuit earlier this week to stop the public funding of a baseball stadium in vegas, claiming it violates the state's

constitution. the a's lease with the coliseum ends after the 2024 season. let's talk about apec. >> there was a bit of tension going on in the background of the summit. mexico's president said publicly that he did not want to appear in the annual photo if peru's president was there. mexico's andres manuel lopez obrador and other latin american countries do not consider peru's dna baluarte a legitimate president. she is next to biden there with the pink on lopez obrador is in the second row. you can barely see his head on the upper right of those photos. bellati took over after peru's congress impeached the elected president last year. now, another conversation around that photo was what to wear. usually the group wears clothing that is traditional to the host country. abc7 news reporter liam melendez went to find some potential outfits for those world leaders. >> most every nation has a traditional outfit that reflects
5:18 am
that country's unique culture and so every year to wrap up the apec summit on the last day of the conference, world leaders wear a piece of clothing that represents the country hosting the event. then a group picture is taken. yes, that's former president trump in vietnam in 2017. and there's then president clinton wearing the traditional shirt from indonesia and later in the philippines in 1996, former president bush posing for apec 2001 in china, then wearing a chilean poncho in 2004. and the following year in korea. and who can forget? then president obama smiled next to the chinese president in traditional chinese clothing. so now for the host country, the us, the situation is a bit of a conundrum because, well, what is america's traditional outfit? the garb. >> i don't really have like the best perspective on the country.
5:19 am
so i'm going to say like a burning american flag. >> the warriors, that's a good choice, too, you know, because the warriors are winning. so the warriors got to know everybody's after them. >> a t shirt and a hoodie and, you know, good sneakers. >> i don't know if i care. >> tough crowd. so we stopped by the clothing store, buffalo exchange in san francisco's eclectic haight-ashbury neighborhood to get some ideas and maybe put together a traditional all american outfit. wow so this cowboy hat says miracle, except that i can't see the president of china wearing one of these. can you maybe a black leather moto cycle jacket? yeah yeah. that's usa for you definitely. blue jeans. i mean, the gold rush. levi strauss. am i right? but then i think about the summer of love, freedom of expression, freedom to be who you want to be. that's what defines america. but would they
5:20 am
wear it? disappointed. but not discouraged. i head over to the forever fashionable lola of san francisco in noe valley. lola oh, i need your help. >> how can i help? so let's see here what we got. oh, that's going to be good. >> lola herrera immediately knew what we needed, and went to work. and finally, fashion meets culture. this is illuminating. you look amazing. do you think they'll like it? >> i think they'll love it. >> wow. well okay. but i don't know. i got to check with somebody and run it by them on zoom. okay, great. so stand by. >> let's do it. >> hi, are you there? can you see me? well what do you think, mr. president? hey. okay got it. that's it. america's outfit for apec 2023 in san francisco. so love it. or leave it. leon melendez, abc seven
5:21 am
news. >> okay, first of all, we love leon. oh, my god, i love her. >> cute. >> this is what they actually ended up wearing. they kept it. they had on suits. >> boring. >> oh, they should have really been out there shopping with leon. this is the most boring photo they've ever taken. it's fun. >> i mean, we're fun. we're boring. >> not fun at all. >> what's fun about it? >> they're all wearing suits. >> look at justin, though. >> it's not. it's fun, he said, going gray. >> he said, i'm in my own photo. yes, justin is in his own photo. >> he said, pull, focus. >> hocus pocus pulled focus. >> okay. oh, goodness. okay. now, what is our style? >> i think we said it right with like, freedom of expression. so you interpret that however you would like to do that, i think you would start with denim. i think american denim, very denim is a must. and that's that's probably your pant. and then however you want to interpret your crop, a crop top, a crop top, they all walked out and a crop top and some cut off jeans,
5:22 am
high waisted crop. >> yeah, high waisted crop. >> yes. >> turn it out. >> maybe like a t shirt. >> i would have done some white t some crisp white. yeah denim for sure. leather jacket. if everyone had come out in that. >> so you're picturing like pull from greece. >> give us, give us greece. >> give us the t-birds. yeah >> and honestly, that's america. >> that's it. maybe a cowboy hat . >> yeah. >> on top. some boots. >> yeah. but honestly, this was a huge miss for levi's and for gap inc. yeah >> are both located here, but i'm sure there's something like it looks like they had to go the formal route. >> even with the other countries, it was more formal. >> yeah, right. >> you know, we don't really, but see, we're a casual country. >> that's true. >> so this doesn't even represent america? >> no, they go maybe tieless at the very without a tie. >> maybe not tailored, maybe not boxes back, maybe it's back. get ready. i love that story.
5:23 am
>> everything fitted. throw it out. >> shout out to leanne. leanne. you were. you did that was fine. >> all her all her ideas were better than what they did. >> they were great. okay. traveling across california today, we are going to see afternoon and evening showers across central and northern california, especially close to the coast. southern california today will start out with sunshine in increasing cloud cover. but we shouldn't have any issues flying into southern california later on this afternoon. here locally, we are dry overhead. these showers will remain off shore. don't need to worry about that. but later on this afternoon and this evening, the storm impact scale is in use. for more scattered showers, isolated downpours and the chance of a thunderstorm. here's future weather as we go hour by hour. scattered showers later on this afternoon. this is 230 will likely continue that trend later on into the evening. and then that low pressure finally begins to move onshore early saturday morning. this is 430 with those showers. we'll keep those showers in the forecast all morning and early afternoon. soon, it's not until a cold front's going to push through here late saturday and get all of this out of here for sunday rainfall totals. you're looking
