first, let's get a check on the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. i noticed we're both wearing blue today. >> yeah, we are. but happy about the weather. the rain, which is welcome rain. but we've had some pretty good downpours and thunderstorms off the coast here for getting started. you can see the wet look outside. it is a level one system. so we are looking at the downpours. but this system to move through the bay area for the first part of the weekend, the first part of the day. and as we look at live doppler seven right now, look at how it lights up off shore there. i'm going to keep this loop going. so you can see all of those thunderstorms headed towards monterey and santa cruz right now. you can see the reds developing off shore. so, boy, the rain may have woke you up last night and will continue to see this heavy rain throughout the morning hours and parts of the bay area from aptos there, santa cruz up through scotts valley and a little tour shows the lighter rain from livermore to pleasanton and our inland valleys picking up about 15 hundredths over the past day or so. but as we go westward towards san francisco and along

the coast, you can see it's more scattered, but a more solid deck of rain from the city over towards hercules into walnut creek, vallejo and the north bay. wow. it has been coming down pretty hard. i kind of debated whether this would be a level one or a level two for the next few hours because it is slowing down. we're seeing those heavy downpours. the possibility of thunderstorms, the gusty winds and mild temperatures, upper 50s to near 60 right now. so we are going to talk about a mild, wet and windy start to your weekend. it will be much, much better as we go through the second half of the weekend. we'll talk about that and plot out the rain totals as well. coming up. gloria sounds good. >> thank you so much, lisa. and as lisa continues to monitor those wet conditions outside, you can keep track of the forecast with the same tools. it's all on our app or right here where you're streaming us right now after months of planning and a hectic week, the apex summit is officially over. and now the question is, how did

something that was on display multiple times throughout the week. on friday, the prime minister of japan toured stanford and took time to have meetings with the ceos of several local tech companies. at an afternoon press conference attended by abc7 news, he highlighted the continued partnership between his home country and the bay area. >> the japan is the largest foreign direct investor investing country in california and is a vital partner in terms of trade. >> earlier in the day president biden had a sit down with the president of mexico. there they discussed how to stop the fentanyl crisis that's hammered cities across the country, including san francisco. >> this is a matter of humanism. it's an act of solidarity. we are sincerely committed to continue to assist at our fullest capacity to prevent drug trafficking, local leaders say hosting apec is another way to push back against the doom loop

narrative, reinforcing to our international guests that our region remains the hub for innovation and creativity the world over. >> hopefully, these visitors will take that impression home and want to come back. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> san francisco mayor london breed has said her office expects apec to boost the local economy by about $50 billion next year. the summit will be in peru. the apec summit was expected to bring more than 20,000 visitors and generate $53 dollars to the local economy. that's according to san francisco travel. many small businesses south of market around moscone center say apec hurt them more than it helped the security fencing. concrete barriers and uniformed officers reportedly kept customers away. >> apec maybe going to help us, but took the business from us getting our business down like over like 6007 to 80. it's cost us tens of thousands compared with this time last year.

>> it's over an 80% loss in revenue. >> in response, supervisor matt dorsey says he's committed to advocating for small businesses long term success and sustainable city. a daly city nonprofit, is scrambling to organize relief aid to those impacted by the devastating 7.2 earthquake in the philippines. as the filipino bayanihan center is asking anyone in the us to donate to help families, there, the nonprofit says many of them lost their homes in the disaster. the quake knocked out cell service and internet, so they're not able to reach their loved ones. >> i tried to call them all the time, but i cannot reach them anymore. it's really sad because they are all my second family. they really you know, they're very close to me. >> the president of the philippines and other country leaders have been in san francisco for apec, the ambassador to the us says they're still gathering new information. they don't know the

death toll at the moment. but in the north bay, a new ad campaign is raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl in marin county, signs and fliers are up and they're asking the question, hey, marin, where's the fentanyl? the answer is everywhere. owed free marin, one of the nonprofits involved says it's designed to break the myth that fentanyl is not a problem. >> we're just really strongly trying to reduce the stigma around addiction in and around substance use disorders, because if we don't do that, we really can't tackle this. if parents are like, that would never be my kid. and we are seeing progress in the world this week on the issue. >> president joe biden met with mexican president andres manuel lopez obrador, who pledged to stop ingredients used in fentanyl from passing into the us. chinese president xi jinping promised to go after the companies making the chemicals that produce the deadly drug tag. comcast is the latest company to join major advertisers, pulling their

advertisements from x. this comes as lionsgate, disney, apple and ibm all pulled their ads due to hate speech and anti-semitic rhetoric shared on the platform. and that includes elon musk. just days ago, musk responded to a post about an anti-semitic concept that was known as the great replacement theory. he called it, quote, the actual truth. experts say they expect more companies to follow suit and pull their ads. this morning, a big shakeup in the artificial intelligence industry. sam altman, who cofounded openai, was fired by the san francisco company openai is behind the widely popular chat bot chat. gpt another co-founder, greg brockman, announced on social media that he was quitting the move followed the announcement that altman was ousted for being, quote, not consistently candid in his communication as he took part in thursday's apec ceo summit. abc7 news is committed to building a better bay area

and this morning we have an update on a story that we first brought to you months ago. last night marked the conclusion of a long journey from serving time to getting a second chance as a small business owner. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez was in san jose talking to people whose lives changed for the better there. >> it feels amazing. it's really mind blowing. it still kind of surreal. i'm not scared of fail. i'm not scared of no. my fearlessness and my relentlessness is what brought me here. >> 14 formerly incarcerated individuals are starting a new chapter as small business owners. photobombers of getting so many gigs that i had to quit my job and now i'm doing this full time. it's all thanks to the company ieso ventures and santa clara county. for the first time, they partnered to provide a 20 week long incubator program this year. they hope people with criminal records develop and fund their businesses. this is a community that's left behind and it's a community that's hungry. >> and the resilience and the perseverance i think, is so much

latinos, sannaiyat or allies is getting ready for thanksgiving and they're opening their annual food pantry this morning. the pantry opens at 1130. it runs until 1230 in half moon bay. the group running the cultural center is looking to serve about 350 families with holiday staples. second harvest of silicon valley is partnering with allies and will be donating other goods in the east bay. a scare for students, parents and staff after multiple bay area schools received an alleged bomb threat on friday. those threats were emailed from someone who claimed to be linked to a russian terrorist group which, quote, planned multiple explosives that would detonate at the schools that received the emails were allegedly targeted for support in ukraine. saint theresa's private school in oakland was one of those schools, the principal says that officers had to search the campus on friday. no explosives were found. >> it bothers me when people again target children. they're the most innocent people. they're vulnerable. that's why

adults do. why we do what we do as teachers, as educators, is to protect and educate children. >> the threat comes the same week that oakland unified school district warned parents of a kidnaping phone call scam. happening today, the oakland police department is joining the saint paul social justice ministry in an attempt to get more guns off the streets. the guns to gardens event takes surrendered firearms and it repurposes them into gardening tools. any one who turns in a firearm can get up to a $300 gift card. the event will be at mount zion missionary baptist church from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm. and for each gun that's received, $5 will be donated to the mount zion food pantry. crop season is being delayed by the state again because of migrating whales off the coast in the northern part of california. recreational crabbing is on hold also because of poor meat quality. the earliest that the season could begin is now the middle of december. this is the

fifth consecutive year that crab season is being delayed because of migrating whales. officials are worried that the whales could get caught in fishing lines. more lake tahoe resorts are opening up so you can hit the slopes for the first time. this season. boreal mountain resort reopened after a bit of a delay. it was behind schedule because of the lack of snow accumulation, but it is not prime conditions to start the season. people still enjoyed the first chance to ski this year. >> definitely not ideal conditions right now, but hey, get yourself out here. it's a great time. we got the vibes going. oh, the stoke is at an all time high right now. first day can't beat it. you can't beat it. the resort has more than 15 snow guns to build up a thick enough base. >> it's made possible by the high elevation, colder conditions. north star and heavenly both announced a delayed start to their ski season and now meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the forecast. and lisa, i know we were talking this morning when i

left my house, got into the car. it was pouring, it was windy. and then as i was driving in, there was even some ponding on the highway already. >> totally. it's pretty treacherous out there. that was the first thing i asked you this morning. did you get the rain? because it is really been coming down the next few hours, we're going to see some very heavy downpours. the possibility of thunderstorms very likely out there as they're already moving into santa cruz. so as you look at live doppler seven, boy, is it lit up right from the north bay. all the way down to the san mateo coast. and you can see those thunderstorms there are a lot of the heavy rain may have woken you up through the overnight hours. and as we look closer here, this is where we have the heaviest rain right now from santa cruz to aptos and the thunderstorm activity could hold together throughout the east bay, throughout the later morning hours. you can see the rain from san jose to campbell and a solid deck here from mill positas, the hills above fremont becoming a little more scattered on the peninsula. you can see san bruno and redwood city. light rain showers. the light

rain continues through san francisco, but it picks up as we get into the north bay over into the east bay. notice around the san pablo bay rainy for martinez and crockett and then as you head up towards nevada, we had very heavy downpours, still some pretty good rain up towards sonoma and we'll continue to see this hold together for throughout the next couple of hours. and then become more widely scattered later on today. but it looks like this system will be slowing down a bit. so staying with us for the first half of your saturday, so an inch and a third in novato so far, kentfield 1.81 almost a half inch in napa. nearly three quarters of an inch at sfo and you can see concord trailing behind but still more rain to come in oakland, almost a half inch of rain. so breezy the upper level winds, upper 50s to near 60 right now. current temperatures and what a cool view, right with the clouds. it is pretty rough out there. so if you don't have to go out between now and about 9:00, i would stay

in. so downpours this morning slick roadways, scattered showers throughout the afternoon and a dry pattern as we head towards thanksgiving the next couple of hours. notice widespread rain here, some very heavy downpours by 9:00. we still have some rain throughout the north bay. and this is where it's going to kind of continue to hold on from the east bay to the south bay throughout parts of the afternoon. then the rest of us will begin to see some clearing as we get into your late day saturday and then sunday looking much better. so anywhere from a couple of hundredths to maybe a third or better than that where you see some of those heavier downpours, here comes the wind. not only today with the heavy rain, but we're talking about a very gusty sunday as the winds switch around to the northwest in the sierra nevada, a couple inches of snow. the system just kind of too warm to bring anything more than about 2 to 3in. so for monday, upper 60s, tuesday day, we are mild and sunny. and then the day before thanksgiving could even see 70 degrees. so 60 out there with the rain ending

recognize this teenager. what if we take you back ten years? we begin this morning's broadcast with breaking news from san francisco's hall of justice. ah, i bet you know the name now, batkid, aka miles scott. it has been ten years since his wish transformed san francisco. i'm doing amazing. >> i would love to just say like, yeah, i'm fine now. >> 51 years old, miles plays football and baseball and helps on his family farm in siskiyou county. he's come a long way since battling leukemia as a child. >> i feel normal, but every time i think about it, it's like, wow, that actually happened. that was four years of my life. >> miles was just five years old when make-a-wish greater bay area granted him his wish to be batman. you've got football out, batman never really, like fades away.

>> he's always coming back. he doesn't have all the super powers or any super powers, but he's still going out there and saving people. that's what i like about him. he gives people hope without any superpowers. it sure felt like the city of san francisco had superpowers on that wish day, as crowds cheered miles on as he fought crime across the city. i do remember one part in that whole day going to that burger shop, looking down on the window, and they're all dancing with signs and stuff. i'm standing there by batman. why are they dancing? they're dancing for you, miles. >> wish come true. and granting wishes is what make-a-wish does for so many children facing a critical illness that bruce and hope you have the wish. >> you know, you're you're done. you can't stop you anymore. that was ama daetz reporting. >> and we are glad to say that

where you notice the heaviest rain, even some thunderstorms from capitola to scotts valley, santa cruz, highway nine, the summit there, boulder creek. and as we head further to the bay area, a bit of a break here around the mid bay from the peninsula over into san ramon, but still some light showers around 580 and then the rain picks up around hercules, vallejo out towards fairfield mill valley. and as we go further to the north, you can see from yountville to vacaville , looking at the wet weather, all the way up through highway five. so this level one system bringing in the downpours for the next few hours with some rain heavy at times, the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds, upper 50s to near 60 right now. and as we look at our 24 hour temperature change, yeah, really mild with those south winds. the winds in the upper elevations from 30 to 40, even better than that miles an hour around saint helena. here are the winds at the surface. so with those downpours, the gusty winds, a live look outside there

right. tsa expecting to screen 30 million passengers between now and november 27th. >> a 9% jump from last year, tuesday and wednesday will be the busiest days for air travel before thanksgiving. with over 2.5 million passengers likely to be screened each day. but the peak is the sunday after with nearly 3 million passengers expected to be screened, according to the tsa. >> so we'll have a clear message for our travelers. it's plan ahead. >> airlines insist that they are prepared hiring tens of thousands of new employees to help manage the crowd. meanwhile on the roads, nearly 50 million americans are expected to get behind the wheel. the busiest day to travel will be wednesday, but leaving in the morning or after 6 p.m. will help you avoid the worst traffic. johnny fernandez, abc news, new york. >> here in the bay area, good news for drivers. gas prices continue to drop and are lower than a year ago in san francisco, gas now averages 518 per gallon. in oakland, it's

504. the least expensive gas is in san jose where it's under $5 per gallon for 95. developing news, the education department is investing, citing rising reports of anti-semitism and islamophobia on multiple college campuses. abc news reporter melissa dawn tells us the reports of discrimination have increased since the start of the israel-hamas war. >> reports of anti-semitism and islamophobia now under investigation by the department of education at six colleges and universities and a k through 12 public school district in kansas. the department is looking at five cases of anti-semitic harassment and two involving anti-muslim harassment. this follows several reports across the country from anti-semitic graffiti found on the law school of columbia university. >> i do not feel safe to cornell, where a student was arrested for making death threats against jewish people at

at cooper union in new york, jewish students huddling in the library as pro-palestinian protesters banged on the windows and doors. >> and the university of pennsylvania chancellor criticized for her response to what students say is growing divisive on campus amid hateful threats. the school said it would be cooperating fully with the investigation. >> her lack of acknowledged agent for palestinian and arab students on campus has been pretty disappointing. us secretary of education miguel cardona telling abc news. >> with complaints about islamophobia and anti-semitism on the rise, there will be more investigations. >> so that's the ultimate goal. safe learning environments for students and learning environments that protect students. civil rights secretary cardona says schools could lose federal funding if they refuse to create safe learning environments. >> the education department will look into whether the schools failed to shield their students

codes in the country, and that includes los altos, saratoga, palo alto and los gatos. all cities have a median sale price of more than $3 million was in the south bay. a new project is underway to help homeless youth find a home. abc7 news reporter dustin dorsey looks at the transformation from an old hotel into a new apartment community struggles on the streets for the unhoused are often debility waiting. >> that's what makes safe stable housing so important for so many , including jocelyn arenas. if i hadn't been accepted into a housing program with my son at the age of 16, i honestly don't know where i would be now. >> today, i probably and i'm being so honest, i don't think i would be here. >> and she's not alone. according to the bill wilson center, california's home to 32% of the nation's homeless. unaccompanied youth in san jose has the highest per capita rate of youth homelessness in the country. we have nearly 85

homeless youth. >> that's youth between ages 18 and 24 years old. for every 100,000 residents in san jose, we must do better with the sound of construction in the background. >> san jose and santa clara county take a step towards better downtown san jose's pavilion inn is being transformed from a hotel to 43 units of permanent affordable housing for youth. it's jamboree housing's first 100% dedicated housing project for people aged 18 to 25, experiencing homelessness or coming out of foster care. >> we hope that this will be a springboard for our our new incoming residents to move on, that it will be a place for them to feel safe, secure, a place where they're valued a place where they can be themselves. something that's a challenge for people struggling with housing security at this age. >> after success in a similar program, arenas is now a housing activist. she believes this new project will lead to similar successes for future youth residents. >> i just know that this this property, it's going to be life

good morning from the bay bridge toll plaza and you could see roads are slick this morning. we have had some rain today and it looks like that probably will continue throughout the morning. so we will check in with lisa for the details on that coming up in just a little bit. but right now, let's go to sports. a battle between warriors tonight out in the south bay. the san jose state spartans face the san diego state aztecs at home. kickoff is at 730. and down on the farm, it's big game weekend. cal and stanford take the field later today at 330. abc's seven sports director larry beil has a preview of the battle for the ax in your morning sports. >> yes good morning, everybody. this is it last meeting between cal and stanford as members of the pac 12, the 126th edition of the big game, tremendous rivalry. so many memorable

or so. and you can see the thunderstorms there moving up from the south. so this whole system moving from the southwest to the northeast. and this is where we have the heavy rain, the possible flooding here from aptos, scotts valley, highway 17, certainly a very treacherous area. and as we look at 280, around santa clara, some lighter rain, breezy winds heading up the peninsula. and you'll notice a break here. but also when this rain has been coming down the last hour, certainly see some ponding on the roadway there. breaks up highway 24. still some light rain, though, into the east bay. you can see the scattered showers from 680 to san ramon and then heavier pockets up towards american canyon through vallejo highway 29, sears point, glen ellen, and then the back edge of this system beginning to clear parts of the coast there around lima and point reyes. but there will be more rain to come as we look outside now, certainly gray with the light rain showers, 24 hour total so far. 1.60 in novato

over two inches in kentfield ad you can see napa 0.67 sfo closing in on an inch close to it anyway and near a quarter of an inch in concord. lesser amounts down towards livermore there and then oakland 0.60. so we're looking at this system to linger throughout the afternoon and even early evening hours. but much lighter precip expected towards that part of the day. 59 in oakland with 57in napa and a foggy view here. so downpours this morning. the slick roadways scattered showers throughout the afternoon. a dry pattern and warmer as we get towards your sunday. monday tuesday and wednesday. so stopping this at 7:00. and you'll notice that we still have the rain up in the north bay. it is cleared the peninsula is still in the south bay and then by about noon time, it looks to be more scattered. but we'll still have those downpours arrive as we get into the later afternoon on some of those showers coming down quickly, moving in and out throughout the dinnertime hour

and then things finally quiet down as that cold front moves on through. so into your sunday, some clouds and then pretty nice out there throughout the afternoon. so rainfall totals coming down pretty good with the downpours at 10 to 2 tenths, maybe a third of an inch in some of the more favored locations with a thunderstorm. and then a winter weather advisory from 4:00 this afternoon through 4:00 on sunday 1 to 4in of that heavy, wet snow at 6500ft. and a look at the next couple of days, not only do we warm up, we've got plenty of sun for your monday, tuesday, upper 60s, mid 60s coast side and then into wednesday. we're looking at still those mild conditions. so level one system keeps it active today with 60s and some scattered showers. the accuweather seven day forecast, some downpours, a chance of a thunderstorm and then we're looking at a dry and mild pattern to start out the workweek lasting through thanksgiving with really mild weather above average throughout the week
