tracking all the rain that we're seeing this morning. yeah, really, it has been widespread and coming down pretty good. >> certainly with some thunderstorms around santa cruz. and as we look outside right now, looks like a bit of a break out there. you can see the wet roadways, but some of the areas have some poor drainage. and we are looking at a few problems around the bay area. but right now, live doppler seven picking up on the yellows and the reds, which indicate the heavier rain. you can see those thunderstorms that have moved on through. and that's why the national weather service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory that just expired there through 6:00. and we are looking at anywhere from a half inch to an inch of rain with this these heavier downpours. so as we move further to the north, they are lighter in terms of rain showers from union city, 8-80 there to 680 and move back westward across the san mateo bridge. it is wet, becoming more scattered as we head up towards san francisco. but you can see the light rain from concord to lafayette and some heavier downpours up

through saint helena out towards 80. in fairfield, you can see the marin area with some scattered showers and some of those downpours. so a level one system continues throughout the morning hours. we've had some of that heavier rain, some of it moving on out, left over with some light showers. still a possibility of thunderstorms. the minor roadway flooding and with those breezy winds and mild temperatures, we're getting a bit of a lull now, but there is more rain on the way. you can see the gusty winds in the upper elevations. the lower elevations. we'll track the rest of the rain and tell you how much to expect today. and talk about sunshine for the rest of the workweek coming up and into thanksgiving. gloria, all right. >> thank you so much, lisa. and as lisa continues to monitor those wet conditions outside, you can keep track of the forecast with the same tools. it's all on our app or right here where you're streaming us right now. after months of planning and a hectic week, the apec summit is officially over

for now. the question is how did san francisco do? and will we see the benefits promised by city leaders? abc7 news reporter tim johns talked to leaders about that. >> it was a parade of planes at sfo friday as world leaders left san francisco following the apec summit. >> i think it went very well. we couldn't have expect much better in terms of how it turned out. >> for months, city leaders have been planning the international gathering. the biggest event the bay area has hosted in decades, as they say, by successfully pulling this off, our region is set to benefit for years to come with everything from new job opportunities to enhanced economic growth. >> i think what happens in the region in terms of opening markets and reducing trade frictions and facilitating investment is extremely important to our economy and its future. >> that spirit of working together for the benefit of everyone involved was a key theme of this year's summit and something that was on display multiple times throughout the

week. on friday, the prime minister of japan toured stanford and took time to have meetings with the ceos of several local tech companies. at an afternoon press conference attended by abc7 news, he highlighted the continued partnership between his home country and the bay area. >> the japan is the largest foreign direct investor investing country in california and is a vital partner in terms of trade. >> earlier in the day president biden had a sit down with the president of mexico. there they discussed how to stop the fentanyl crisis that's hammered cities across the country, including san francisco. >> this is a matter of humanism. it's an act of solidarity. we are sincerely committed to continue to assist it. our fullest capacity to prevent drug trafficking. >> local leaders say hosting apec is another way to push back against the doom loop narrative, reinforcing to our international

guests that our region remains the hub for innovation and creativity the world over. hopefully these visitors will take that impression home and want to come back. tim johns, abc seven news. >> san francisco mayor london breed has said her office expects uh- apec to boost the local economy by about $50 million next year. the summit will be in peru. the apec summit was expected to bring more than 20,000 visitors and generate $53 million for the local economy. that's according to san francisco travel. many small businesses south of market around moscone center, though, say that apec hurt them more than it helped the security fencing concrete barriers and uniformed officers reportedly kept customers away. >> this apec may be going to help us, but took the business from us getting our business down like over, like 60, 70, 80. >> it's cost us tens of thousands compared with this time last year. it's over an

loss in revenue. >> in response, supervisor matt dorsey says he's committed to advocating for small businesses as long term success and sustainable city. a daly city nonprofit, is scrambling to organize relief aid to those impacted by the devil, stating 7.2 earthquake in the philippines. the filipino bayanihan center is asking anyone in the us to donate to help families there. the nonprofit says that many of them lost their homes in the disaster. the quake knocked out cell service and internet, so they're not able to reach their loved ones. >> i tried to call them all the time, but i cannot reach them anymore. so it's really sad because they are all my second family. they really you know, they're very close to me. >> the president of the philippines and other country leaders have been in san francisco for apec, the ambassador to the us says they're still gathering new information and they do not know

the death toll at the moment in the north bay. a new ad campaign is raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl in marin county. signs and fliers are up asking the question, hey marin, where's the fentanyl? the answer is everywhere. odd free marin, one of the nonprofit gets involved, says it is designed to break the myth that fentanyl is not a problem. >> we're just really strongly trying to reduce the stigma around addiction and around some substance use disorders, because if we don't do that, we really can't tackle this. if parents are like that would never be my kid. we are seeing progress in the world. >> this week on the issue. president joe biden met with mexican president andres manuel lopez obrador, who pledged to stop ingredients used in fentanyl from passing into the us. chinese president xi jinping promised to go after companies making the chemicals that produce the deadly drug. comcast is now the latest company to

join major advertisers pulling their advertising from x. this comes as lionsgate, disney, apple and ibm all pulled their ads because of hate speech and anti-semitic rhetoric shared on the platform. and that includes elon musk just days ago, musk responded to a post about an anti-semitic concept known as the great replacement theory, and he called it, quote, the actual truth. experts say that they expect more companies to follow suit and also pull their ads. this morning, a big shakeup in the artificial intelligence industry. sam altman, who co-founded openai, was fired by the san francisco company openai is behind the widely popular chat bot chat. gpt another co-founder, greg brockman, announced on social media that he was quitting the move followed the announcement that altman was ousted for being, quote, not consistent, candid in his communications as he took part in thursday's apex ceo summit. abc7 news is committed

to building a better bay area and this morning we have an update on a story that we first brought to you months ago. last night marked the conclusion of a long journey from serving time to getting a second chance as a small business owner. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez was in san jose talking to people whose lives changed for the better. >> it feels amazing. it's really mind blowing. it's still kind of surreal. i'm not scared of fail. i'm not scared of a know my fearlessness and my relentlessness is what brought me here. >> 14 formally incarcerated individual trials are starting a new chapter as small business owners photobomber started getting so many gigs that i had to quit my job. >> and. and now i'm doing this full time. >> it's all thanks to the company ieso ventures and santa clara county. for the first time, they partnered to provide a 20 week long incubator program . this year, they help people with criminal records develop and fund their businesses. this is a community that's left behind, and it's a community that's hungry.

>> and the resilience and the perseverance i think, is so much overlooked. you give them an opportunity and see just see what they can do. >> friday night was the first ever reentry entrepreneurship summit. participants shared their stories, gave their elevator pitch or brought their business. >> you book and i cook. >> melissa contreras started her catering company out of her home . she reflected on how hard finding a job after incarceration was basically cost go. >> even dollar tree. nobody would hire me because i was a high risk parolee. >> in april, her company, taco mas, was valued at zero. now she's made nearly $150,000 in revenue. >> for the first time in my life, i'm able i'm able to afford a vacation for the first time in my life. if my car breaks down, i'm able to fix it without worrying, like many of her fellow cohorts can't. >> herrera's credits the training and mentorship the reentry business program provided because when someone like me comes out here, we don't if we don't have someone helping

a live look outside this morning from santa cruz. and it looks like we've had rain throughout the morning here in the bay area. you can see right there that rain even impacting our camera out there. so if you are heading out this morning, you should definitely expect wet roads and of course, we'll check in with lisa in a little bit to get a check of your forecast. new developments, the starship successfully launched from texas this morning. the launch was spacex's second chance to prove that it can create a rocket capable of deep space travel. during the first test, the engines had lighting problems

combined with some other issues, and it forced the launch to be terminated. this morning. thanksgiving is quickly approaching and the rain may put a damper on some plans this week, but it's not stopping people from already getting into the holiday spirit. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has everything holiday related, including potential new pets. >> well, we went to costco and we got our turkey from turkey trimmings to tree lightings. >> the bay area is getting into the holiday spirit in downtown san jose. friday the final touches were being put on an outdoor ice rink. >> just get ready to have fun and go ice skating. you know, it's a great experience for the whole family. >> the rink will be surrounded by christmas in the park displays and winter wonderland amusement rides and will be open until mid-january. we have a grand opening on monday. >> and so today is just kind of a soft opening and let people experience it. and then monday we'll have a grand celebration. >> and in downtown san francisco, people are already

taking to the ice at union square. >> i love downtown. i love the holidays. and i think it's really sweet that we're here and we're just going to go ice skating. it just brings me like a lot of nostalgia and like just we like my family has a lot of traditions. and so like, especially around this time of year and if you're planning on flying this thanksgiving, officials at san francisco international airport say they're expecting numbers to near pre-pandemic levels for people that have been traveling at sfo the last few years, they're going to come back to a busier airport than they've seen for a while. >> and that means getting to the airport early is as important as ever. >> we always recommend allowing extra time getting here about two hours prior to your domestic departure, three hours if you're flying international. >> meanwhile, back at union square, friday marked the start of holiday windows today through december 31st. >> we're partnering with macy's for our 37th year of showcasing beautiful adoptable animals here in the window. >> and you can come by and check out these puppies and kittens on

thursday through sunday until the end of the year. it's just a great tradition that we have where people can come down and celebrate christmas support local businesses like macy's and come home with a lifelong partner. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> everyone's getting into the holiday spirit. well, happening today on the peninsula, the nonprofit ayudando latinos or allies is getting ready for thanksgiving and opening their annual food pantry. this morning, the pantry opens at 1130. it runs until 1230 in half moon bay. the group running the cultural center is looking to serve about 350 families with holiday staples. second harvest of silicon valley is partnering with allies and will be donating other goods. crab season is being delayed by the state again because of migrating whales off the coast in the northern part of california. recreational crabbing is on hold also because of poor meat quality. the

earliest that the season could begin is now the middle of december for this is the fifth consecutive year that crab season is being delayed because of migrating whales. officials are worried that the whales could get caught in fishing lines. more lake tahoe resorts are opening up so you can hit the slopes for the first time this season. boreal mountain resort reopened after a little bit of a delay. it was behind schedule because of the lack of snow accumulation, although the conditions really are not prime to start the season, people still enjoyed the first chance to ski this year. >> it's definitely not a ideal conditions right now, but hey, get yourself out here. it's a great time. we got the vibes going. oh, the stoke is at an all time high right now. first day can't beat it. you can't beat it. >> they're happy about that. well, the resort has more than 15 snow guns to build up. a thick enough base. north star and heavenly both announced a delayed start to their ski season. and here in the bay area, we are waking up to some rain today. i know i experienced

a lot of rain when i was driving into work today and some wind as well. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast. and lisa, are we going to need that rain jacket in the umbrella all day today? yeah, it's going to become more it is more on and off already. >> and i just want to tell you, 36 at truckee right now with some light rain. so the snow level pretty high there at 6500ft. and the winter weather advisory starting at 4:00 this afternoon for the sierra nevada as this system continues to move up and over the mountains. but right now, the heaviest rain has moved through this morning. you can see the thunderstorm forms that has that were set up, bringing down anywhere from a half inch to an inch an hour right along aptos, monterey, and still some pretty heavy rain as well. to the south of us. we're going to zoom in a little bit closer and you can see a little of this is overdone because we're so close to the radar beam here. but capital, l.a. looking at some heavy rain from watsonville. and as we head up to the north, it's lighter from santa clara to 80. there you can

see from cupertino to sunnyvale and heading up the peninsula. you can see a shower there right around san bruno. right around the airport. south city and the wet weather from burlingame over into the east bay light rain from hayward, 680. dublin the higher elevations around fremont looking at some heavier downpours. livermore it has been about a 10th of an inch for you. so it has been light. we've had the heavier rain in the north bay vacaville, pretty good downpour as well with yountville right now highway 29, american canyon and through marin county, it's becoming more scattered. but right along the coast here, some rain picking up just north of bolinas around olema. so as we look outside here from our exploratorium camera, the drops on the lens and look at the rainfall over two inches in kentfield 1.60 in novato with 0.67 in napa, nearly an inch at sfo. so the north bay the peninsula looking at some heavier rain while the east bay

around concord and livermore maybe a quarter of an inch less than that in livermore and you can see 0.60 in oakland. so breezy south winds out ahead of the system. upper 50s to near 60. so it's a milder start. we have some fog. it is slippery out there. so some of the drainage not doing its job with the leaves allowing for ponding on the roadways. so keep that in mind. the downpour hours this morning, we'll see a few more heavier downpours into the late afternoon with the passage of the front and with the scattered showers there throughout the day . and then a dry pattern into sunday and next week. let's take you hour by hour, 7:00, a bit of a break there and then into about 11:00, more showers forming in the north bay. the cloudy skies. and then as we go through the afternoon, notice the atmosphere still pretty unstable. so stopping this at 230 and notice just about anywhere we could see some of those showers and they will continue throughout the early evening hours. so a couple of

hundreds here to about 2/10 throughout the day today. and as we look into the mountains there, notice that 1 to 4in 6500 foot snow level, we are dry for monday. sunny upper 60s, tuesday. the pattern continues. the day before thanksgiving. and looking at the shower activity throughout the day today, the level one system and the accuweather seven day forecast, the heavy rain. that line is behind us but still looking at the showers today and then a string of dry sunny and nice weather right on through the holiday

like, yeah, i'm fine now. >> 51 years old, miles plays football and baseball and helps on his family farm in siskiyou county. he's come a long way since battling leukemia as a child. >> i feel normal, but every time i think about it, it's like, wow, that actually happened. that was four years of my life. >> miles was just five years old when make-a-wish greater bay area granted him his wish to be batman. you've got football out, batman never really like fades away. >> he's always coming back. he doesn't have all the super powers or any super powers, but he's still going out there and saving people. that's what i like about him. it gives people hope without any superpowers, it sure felt like the city of san francisco had superpowers on that wish day, as crowds cheered miles on as he fought crime across the city. i do remember

who's good morning to you. i'm gloria rodriguez. and happy saturday to you. if you are heading out the door this morning, expect some rain. meteorologist lisa argent has been keeping a close eye on the weather this morning. lisa looks like it's kind of stop and go throughout the bay area, right? >> yes, that's right. we had some very heavy rain earlier with thunderstorms forms around the santa cruz area. but you can see the yellows and the reds passing to the north and east of us right now, moving up from the southwest. and we'll continue to see an unstable atmosphere throughout the day today. but starting around capitola, highway one and watsonville, corralitos, the very heavy rain and it becomes lighter and around the south bay from to 80, santa clara breezy winds in

campbell, cupertino and heading further to the north around hayward and pleasanton. five 8-80 some light rain showers and through san ramon, a heavier cell moving out of the bay view across the bay right now and up into the north bay from sears point, highway 37, highway 12, american canyon looking at moderate rain showers and the heavier rain from highway one lagunitas there. marin county getting a break where around pope valley heavy shower so level one system throughout not only this morning the rest of the day today possibility of still a thunderstorm but otherwise we're in the upper 50s to near 60. and looking at those breezy winds over 35 miles an hour above 1000ft. but even at the surface, wherever, 20 miles an hour from hayward and here's the plan the rest of the morning hours, you can see the rain showers becoming more scattered. but we don't get rid of them. in fact, by 3:00, still popping up there right on through the five, 6:00 hour with some light shower activity. we'll talk about totals your sunday and the busy

holiday week that is featuring much brighter weather, including thanksgiving coming up. >> listen to that happening now, rain hitting san francisco streets is making for dangerous roadway conditions. you can see a tree right there that limb snapped and fell over a parked car and witnesses say that parts of the tree are blocking leavenworth street near the intersection of bush street. san francisco police officers are at that intersection right now and they are helping redirect traffic. so be sure that you give yourself plenty of extra time on the roadways. this morning and be careful. thank giving is less than a few days away and experts predict this travel season will break records. traffic will pick up next week as a storm is set to move across the country. abc news reporter johny fernandez tells us how the storm could impact airports and roads. >> a major storm is moving across the country as millions

of americans hit the road and head to the airport for thanksgiving. abc's rob marciano with what to expect when traveling. >> watch how quickly this rain stretches across the ohio river valley and into the northeast. tuesday night, wednesday, thanksgiving day for millions across the north will feel more like winter than november. >> still, many travelers are hoping for smooth sailing this holiday season. >> hopefully all the flights stay on time. and we don't get weather right. >> tsa expecting to screen 30 million passengers between now and november 27th, a 9% jump from last year, uh- tuesday and wednesday will be the busiest days for air travel before thanksgiving. with over 2.5 million passengers likely to be screened each day. but the peak is the sunday after with nearly 3 million passengers expected to be screened, according to the tsa. >> so we'll have a clear message for our travelers. it's plan ahead. >> airlines insist that they are prepared, hiring tens of thousands of new employees to

help manage the crowd. meanwhile on the roads, nearly 50 million americans are expected to get behind the wheel. the busiest day to travel will be wednesday, but leaving in the morning or after 6 p.m. will help you avoid the worst traffic. johnny fernandez, abc news, new york area good news for drivers. >> gas prices continue to drop and they're lower than a year ago. in san francisco. gas now averages 5.18 per gallon. in oakland, it is 504. the least expensive gas is in san jose where it's under $5 per gallon at 4.95. developing news, the education department is investing, citing rising reports of anti-semitism and islamophobia on multiple college campuses. abc news reporter melissa don tells us the reports of discrimination have increased since the start of the israel-hamas war. >> more reports of anti-semitism and islamophobia now under investigation by the department of education at six colleges and universities and a k through 12

public school district in kansas. the department is looking at five cases of anti-semitic harassment and two involving anti-muslim harassment. this follows several reports across the country from anti-semitic graffiti found on the law school of columbia university. >> i do not feel safe to cornell, where a student was arrested for making death threats against jewish people. at cooper union in new york, jewish students huddling in the library as pro-palestinian protest posters banged on the windows and doors. >> and the university of pennsylvania chancellor criticized for her response to what students say is growing divisive ness on campus amid hateful threats. the school said it would be cooperating fully with the investigation. >> her lack of acknowledged agent for palestinian and arab students on campus has been pretty disappointing. >> us secretary of education miguel cardona telling abc news.

with complaints about islamophobia and anti semitism on the rise, there will be more investigations. >> so that's the ultimate goal. safe learning environments for students and learning environments that protect students civil rights. >> secretary cardona says schools could lose federal funding if they refuse to create safe learning environments. the education department will look into whether the schools failed to shield their students from hate speech and threats which are not protected by the first amendment. melissa don, abc news, los angeles. >> law enforcement across the state are looking into alleged bomb threats to multiple schools on friday and that includes schools right here in the bay area. those threats were emailed from someone who claimed to be linked to a russian terrorist group which, quote, planted multiple explosives that would detonate at the schools that received the emails were allegedly targeting for supporting ukraine. saint theresa's private school in oakland was one of those schools. officers had to search

100,000 residents in san jose, we must do better with the sound of construction in the background. >> san jose and santa clara county take a step towards better downtown. san jose's pavilion inn is being transformed from a hotel to 43 units of permanent affordable housing for youth. it's jamboree housing's first 100% dedicated housing project for people aged 18 to 25, experiencing homelessness or coming out of foster care. >> we hope that this will be a springboard for our our new incoming residents to move on, that it will be a place for them to feel safe, secure, a place where they're valued, a place where they can be themselves, something that's a challenge for people struggling with housing security at this age. >> after success in a similar program, arenas is now a housing activist. she believes this new project will lead to similar successes for future youth residents. >> i just know that this this property, it's going to be life changing, this incredible project behind us. >> this is how i cultivate hope

orinda and perhaps walnut creek, continuing to see the moderate rain push through the area further out to the east, san ramon, i should say, south 680. it's lighter rain. and as we get up to the north bay, it's been scattered, but still some downpours from where sweep is situated. and saint helena there, yountville back towards the coast, some moderate rain moving into lagunitas and shortly highway one into novato. so it continues throughout the day even though the heaviest pushed on through maybe while you were sleeping. there's a look at our rain totals over two inches in novato and kentfield napa 0.83. san francisco now over an inch. this is a 24 hour totals closing in on a third of an inch in concord. more to come for you in orinda 0.62. our roof camera pretty gray out there and foggy 58. san francisco 59 in mountain view and looking at our exploratorium camera where we'll see plenty of cloud cover late day sun 58. santa rosa, 57 and

concord and the cloud cover. quiet looking pier 39, very gray out there. so some scattered downpours continue throughout the afternoon and those showers will take us right on through about 4 or 5:00. and then a dry week ahead. so hour by hour, our high resolution continue to pick up on a few scattered showers coming back into play by about 11:00 in the north bay. the rest of us just cloudy. but throughout the afternoon, we'll continue to see some of the light scattered showers this is 230 in the afternoon. so it's not raining everywhere. but as we get towards five, 6:00, still rain will be returning to parts of the bay into the east bay, perhaps around 580. the south bay, and then it finally ends towards early sunday. so anywhere from a couple hundredths to about a quarter of an inch still to come throughout 11:00 tonight. and in the sierra nevada, it has been a warm system with some light rain in the sierra nevada, around truckee, 36 degrees. but
