morning, america, on this sunday. janai is on maternity leave, so it's great to have erielle reshef back on the desk. you stuck around. >> erielle: it's great to be here. i'm here for a while if you'll have me. >> gio: we have a lot of big stories overnight including thanksgiving travel as we head into the holiday week. history made at miss universe. the first ever winner from nicaragua. so we're looking forward to that. >> erielle: also ahead, the latest from iceland where scientists are warning that a volcano could erupt at any time. an evacuation order is in place, and residents told they could be out of their homes for months. >> whit: but we begin with the reports that israel and hamas could be inching closer to a deal to free some of the hostages. that's as tens of thousands of protesters arrived in jerusalem after a five-day march from tel aviv calling on the government to do more to secure the hostages' release. abc's patrick reevell is in tel aviv this morning with the very latest. patrick, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. we were at that protest last

night and prime minister netanyahu is under pressure to get a deal. the biden administration, though, saying there is no deal yet, and with the u.s. and israeli sources telling us the deal being discussed could free about 50 hostages in exchange for a five-day cease-fire. and the release of palestinian women and children held in israel. for now, the negotiations continue. this morning, israel and hamas inching closer to a deal to free the hostages held in gaza. israel's government under pressure at home. thousands of israelis demonstrating overnight, demanding it get the estimated 236 hostages back. you can see thousands of people here all chanting, now, now. the hostages' families marching for five days to jerusalem, joined by protesters outside prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office. gil dickman's two cousins are among the hostages. >> if there is a chance to do it, and i think there is, it should be acted upon right now. >> reporter: u.s. and israeli sources telling abc there is a

deal under discussion in talks mediated through qatar that would free around 50 hostages, mainly women and children, in exchange for a five-day temporary cease-fire. but overnight, the white house national security council saying there is still no deal yet. demands growing that israel accept a cease-fire amid the war's devastating impact on palestinian civilians. the death toll now over 12,000 according to gaza's hamas-run health ministry. dozens were reported killed in air strikes in northern and southern gaza saturday. the survivors rushed to the hospital, toddlers covered in dust. israel also facing criticism over its actions in al-shifa hospital. hundreds of patients and other civilians fled the hospital saturday after they said israel ordered them to evacuate saying it gave them just an hour to get out. the idf denying they gave that order saying they assisted a request from the hospital to evacuate. the world health organization

saying it sent a team into shifa saturday describing the situation inside as a death zone saying 291 patients remain trapped there, but this morning, good news. gaza's health ministry run by hamas saying 30 premature babies in shifa have been evacuated to egypt. the w.h.o. saying it's now trying to arrange the urgent evacuation of the remaining patients to hospitals in southern gaza, but saying they too are already overwhelmed. a relief as those 30 premature babies are being evacuated. on the possible hostage deal though, israeli sources telling us the number of people to be freed is still a sticking appointment and there's still no certainty that an agreement can be reached. gio? >> gio: and the world is watching. patrick, thank you. let's bring in abc news chief global affairs correspondent and co-anchor of "this week," martha raddatz. martha, good morning. thank you so much for being here. let's go ahead and start with israel and gaza, of course. prime minister netanyahu said they will have a temporary cease-fire only if israel has the hostages back, but here in the u.s., there are growing

calls of course, coming from some democrats pushing president biden to call for that cease-fire now. do you see the president changing his position? >> martha: well, gio, i think it's possible. i mean, they are in a negotiating stage, and it depends on what they get out of that. you know, you've heard the rhetoric. the administration calls it a pause. the israelis talk about a possible pause, not a cease-fire, but this deal outlined or this potential deal outlined in "the washington post" does talk about a freeze in combat for five days, and that would be a very big step, but again, if they got all of the women and children back, that might be something the u.s. would accept and the israelis, of course, would have to as well. >> gio: absolutely. let's switch gears here to china. that's another big headline. president biden met with chinese president xi this week in california. president biden said they made good progress, but then he

called xi a dictator. did that comment, you think, undo some of that progress? >> martha: well, gio, as i'm sure you saw, you saw the secretary of state, antony blinken kind of wince when president biden said that. he did say, well, he's a dictator technically because he's in this communist country, but it never helps when someone says something like that. the white house seemed to be scrambling to say, you know, what the president meant was, but i don't think it will really set back this meeting in many ways. this was more to thaw relationships and to re-establish that military to military contact which is very important at a time like this, gio. >> gio: very important, and i know you're going to be covering it all on "this week" later on. martha, thank you so much. tune into "this week" later. martha speaks with white house deputy national security adviser jon finer and israeli ambassador to the u.s. michael herzog about israel's ongoing ground operation in gaza.

plus, she speaks with the san francisco mayor about the plan for the city's future on the heels of the apec conference. erielle. >> erielle: now the travel outlook as we head into the week. abc's jaclyn lee is at l.a.x. with what you need to know. good morning, jaclyn. >> reporter: good morning, erielle. 55 million people are expected to travel throughout the thanksgiving holiday, and we spoke with those who are using some strategies to make travel less of a headache. >> before all the hectic-ness and everything. >> reporter: over the weekend, a steady flow of passengers trying to beat the upcoming travel rush. the faa reporting a 13% increase in flights the weekend before thanksgiving, jumping to more than 44,000. was it a strategy to be flying a few days before thanksgiving? >> if you can get to where you need to go and get your work done before you unplug before the full holiday. i think that's a really good strategy. >> reporter: a tiktoker landing in jfk on saturday calling it chaos.

>> it's 7:30 in the morning saturday before thanksgiving and it's already mayhem. everyone is already traveling early. >> reporter: the busiest day of the airport is expected to be wednesday, the day before thanksgiving, with tsa preparing to screen 30 million passengers throughout the holiday. >> oh my god, especially when there's cancellations. that's what really messes things up. >> reporter: earlier this week, the faa raising the alarm about an air traffic control worker shortage. with a federal report urging the agency to take action after 23 close calls this year, and on the roads, aaa projecting nearly 50 million people to drive to their destination. a 1.7% increase from last year. >> this is more cost-effective than traveling by air, especially if you have many family members and average prices are up per person, and driving by car, gas prices are now $3.36 on average per gallon. >> reporter: and the faa is really expecting flights to ramp up today and tomorrow, surpassing 46,000 come monday,

but with the big day, the big travel day, that will be on wednesday, whit. >> whit: those p.a. announcements ramping up as well at the airport, jaclyn. thank you so much. we appreciate it. we move now to capitol hill and fresh off a deal to avoid a government shutdown. speaker mike johnson is trying to unite republicans as he faces new challenges. abc's jay o'brien joins us from the capital with more. jay, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning. house speaker mike johnson this morning preparing for a potential fight in the coming days with hardliners in his own party over government spending. the speaker was able to broker a deal with democrats to avert a government shutdown into the new year, but that enraged house conservatives who then staged a revolt on the house floor, blocking a vote on one of the several spending bills congress now needs to pass to fully fund the government. johnson was forced to send lawmakers home early for thanksgiving after that defeat, and gop hardliners promising even more clashes in the future over spending cuts. it comes as the new speaker as

has made one big concession to his far-right members, promising to make more than 40,000 hours of security camera footage from inside the capitol on january 6th available to the public tomorrow to be uploaded online and available by appointment viewing here at the capitol. the video has already been pored over by the january 6th committee as well as provided a conservative commentators, and parts of it even put out by the department of justice. johnson said releasing the video is a way to show transparency, but critics warn it gives the public stunning visibility into the security infrastructure at the capitol and could endanger the people working here. gio? >> gio: jay o'brien, thank you so much. now to the threat of a volcanic eruption in iceland. some residents already forced to leave their homes, following thousands of tremors in recent days and they may not be able to return for months. abc's tom soufi burridge now has the latest and joins us. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, gio. that volcanic eruption could come at any moment.

there were 1,700 mini-earthquakes in just a 24-hour period this weekend according to iceland's meteorological office. check out these incredible images showing huge cracks in roads. the ground on iceland's peninsula shifting by several feet in recent days, a real reminder for us all of the powerful force of nature. experts saying an eruption is likely, predicting it will take place along a tunnel. that town's residents evacuated and now being told they may not be able to return to their homes for months. this week the authorities allowing them back in for a matter of minutes to grab their most precious possessions. giant cracks in the earth running through that community. the blue lagoon geothermal resort, one of iceland's top tourist attractions, closed until the end of this month. iceland sits in a volcanic hot spot in the north atlantic with an average of one eruption every four to five years. a giant volcanic ash cloud in 2010 grounding flights across europe for days.

in the last three years, the volcanic system has erupted three times. before that, it was dormont for 800 years. scientists believe an eruption there today could produce lava, but not an ash cloud. >> erielle: some stunning images already. thank you. here at home, flu cases are on the rise in several states. abc's reena roy is here now with numbers and tips you need to stay safe. good morning, reena. >> reporter: it is that time of year again, and with people starting to gather for the holiday, health officials are urging americans to take precautions with numbers going up. this morning, health officials anticipating the spread of viruses as people start to gather for thanksgiving amid a rise in flu-like illnesses. >> we're very concerned about superspreader events, people coming together, mixing, and then bringing their illness home. >> reporter: seven states plus d.c. and puerto rico experiencing high or very high levels of respiratory illness activity. the cdc estimating from october

until last week there were at least 780,000 flu illnesses and nearly 500 deaths. >> for those who are youngest, those that are oldest and have underlying conditions, the flu infection can be especially deadly. >> reporter: this 7-year-old of columbus, georgia, recently dying after coming down with the flu. >> she was saying, like, i can't breathe, like, i can't breathe. they got here really fast, but honestly, before they got here, i just knew she had already left. >> reporter: and while officials say so far, flu hospitalizations have remained lower than this time last year, emergency rooms are bracing for what could be another tripledemic season of rsv, flu, and covid. as we often hear, experts reminding us getting your annual vaccinations is key along with good ventilation during a gathering, washing your hands frequently, and if you are sick, staying away from others. whit. >> whit: important information. reena roy, our thanks to you.

let's talk turkey, and thanksgiving just days away. and this year, the cost of that bird and all the fixings might be a pleasant surprise. abc's morgan norwood here to talk about all of that and break it down. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. if you're hosting and headed to the grocery store for those last-minute items, i've got good news for you. your thanksgiving meal won't gobble up as much of your wallet as prices have dropped. the average price for a 16-pound bird is just over $27, that's down 5.5% from last year. after a pandemic price surge, coupled with a bout of bird flu, sent those prices soaring 50%. supply has since rebounded, and it's also looking good for that cranberry sauce as well. a can of cranberries now averaging $2.10, that's down 18% from last year. that's thanks to a surge in imports from canada, and if you want whipped cream with your pie, you are in luck as well because that is down 23%, and this brings the overall meal tally for a party of ten to $61.17, 4.5% lower than last

year, and depending on where you live, that could even be better. in the midwest, the prices are the lowest, and now for the bad news. unfortunately, a few prices have gone up. if you want bread on the table, it's about $3.84 for a dozen rolls and pumpkin pie mix will run you about $4.44. i'm a sweet potato girl myself, sweet potato pie girl myself, but i'm not here to start a debate, guys. >> gio: start a debate. why not? i'll have all the pies. >> whit: we saw the price on the cranberry sauce though in the can. >> erielle: how about you, somara, what pie? >> somara: this is as contentious as candy corn. pumpkin pie all day. by thanksgiving we'll be dealing with cold air just before that rain. that same storm system right now is actually making its way through the west coast. so check this out. we've got stormy weather out west, rain and snow. this has prompted multiple winter alerts from utah down to arizona.

winter weather advisories in parts of colorado and even in los angeles, we're looking at wind alerts. not only is it going to be cold and wet, it's also going to be very windy. as far as snow totals go, we could see 6 inches to a foot in the higher elevations. keep that in mind. this is through tuesday, and then this same system begins to migrate farther east, and by monday, you see that line of storms there stretching from houston into louisiana right on up into jackson, mississippi. we are looking at the threat for severe weather. with these storms will come damaging wind, large hail, and the threat for isolated tornadoes. again, this is on monday. this is a look at your forecast. let's go ahead and see what's going on a little closer to home.

>> put the baby down now! >> reporter: this morning, two kenosha, wisconsin. police officers involved in this disturbing arrest have been suspended as newly released video of the incident sheds light on the violent altercation at an area applebee's. >> put the baby down now! >> stop it! i plead with you, stop! >> reporter: this is the moment officers tried to get a father to put his baby down as he was being detained, believing he was the suspect in a hit and run accident nearby. according to police, an employee at this kenosha applebee's called in a tip. jermelle english jr. and his partner, shanya boyd matching a description. >> i work at applebee's, and the cops just came here and asked if there was a man, woman and baby who recently got here. there was a table that was sitting that looked very nervous. >> reporter: police entering the restaurant. >> there was an accident out there and somebody said they saw you run in with the baby. >> reporter: questioning the couple for several minutes, asking details like, how long

have they been there, and what car did they drive? english visibly upset, gets up and tries to walk away with his 1-year-old. police eventually using what the report called a modified escort tactic, grabbing english's arm as he held his child. the father yanking away -- >> somebody grab the baby. >> reporter: english tackled to the ground. a witness taking this video. his son grabbed by employees seconds before officers appear to repeatedly punch the father. then they pepper sprayed shanya boyd. of the two officers disciplined, one received a four-day suspension for not re-evaluating the effectiveness of the strikes against english, and the other suspended for ten days after not decontaminating boyd after pepper spray and other violations. the real suspects were later found hiding inside the restaurant's bathroom. the couple still faced charges from that july 20th incident for resisting a police officer and disorderly conduct. attorneys for the couple say they plan to sue. whit? >> whit: alex presha for us, thank you. now to tiger woods' big announcement returning to professional golf planning to

make his first start since withdrawing from the masters last spring. abc's morgan norwood is back again with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. he is back after caddying for his son and walking on the ankle that really had been bothering him since that 2021 wreck. tiger woods says that he is fit enough to play. the 15-time major champion taking to social media announcing that he will return to competitive golf in two weeks when he hosts and plays in the hero world challenge in the bahamas. now, this is going to be his first event since he dropped out of this year's masters after having surgery on that ankle that was injured during that 2021 car wreck. woods now says he's pain-free adding "my ankle is fine." tiger woods recently caddied for his son, charlie, at the notah begay gold championship, and it fueled a lot of speculation that he was close to hitting the green again himself. lucas glover and justin rose will also play in the hero world challenge.

it is insidious in nature. out there they experienced heat index values near 123 degrees. to be in that circumstance without water, just downright brutal. but yes, as you said, we are going to be experiencing a big shift in our weather. colder air is on the way, but before we get there, we've -- actually, we've got some snow coming down in vermont. ski season is very much under way for a lot of our friends, especially in the higher elevations, and you know out west, they're also seeing some snow in the rockies. let's talk about this cross-country storm. i left off last hint letting you know we'll be experiencing severe weather throughout louisiana, into texas, up into memphis and st. louis. flash flooding is possible and we could see isolated tornadoes with this. what happens after that? east coast friends, we're next. by wednesday, heavy rain lining the i-95 corridor. snow into areas like vermont, new hampshire, parts of maine, and upstate new york, and that is going to lead into travel difficulties i presume. beyond that, thursday comes in. it's dry, so if you are hitting the road thursday morning, that looks good, but look at the chill to follow. that arctic air surging down with 20s as far south as lexington, kentucky.

just said, our station in houston also did a deep dive about one specific type of mail theft, thieves stealing checks. it's incidents like these, captured on ring camera. thieves opening up mailboxes in search of checks to steal and sell online. >> and the trade is quite vibrant at this point. the checks go for different prices depending on the area, depending on the balance. >> reporter: this reporter at our houston station ktrk investigating the disturbing trend and speaking to this local business owner who noticed his loyal clients were running behind on their checks and discovered they were being stolen. >> i would say he's gotten at least ten checks from us. so we don't leave here now until the mail person comes and we can get our checks out of the mailbox. >> reporter: and it's not just houston. in september alone, georgia state university finding hundreds of stolen checks online in major u.s. cities. this week in north carolina, the

u.s. attorney's office announcing the arrest of a postal service employee and two co-conspirators arrested on federal charges for a scheme that involved stealing checks worth more than $24 million. and in florida, a del ray beach mail carrier now also facing federal charges, accused of check washing, stealing, and according to court documents, trying to sell a usps key and 21 stolen checks totaling to nearly $550,000. >> the full extent of the federal government will be behind this type of case, and to prosecute it to the fullest extent. >> reporter: a criminologist expert says the most common ways the criminals use the cast is by erasing the ink and rewriting a smaller amount, stealing personal information to open a bank account or post the checks on the dark web and messaging groups for sale. just a lot of money at stake as our station ktrk found, and experts also say try conducting transactions online, but if you
