moderates in the state with a protest shutting down the california democratic convention. abc7 news starts right now. >> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news thrust into the national spotlight. >> a soft spoken small town girl acquired the label steel magnolia while rewriting what it meant to be a first lady. tonight we are paying tribute to rosalynn carter. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. the carter center says she passed away earlier today at the age of 96. at her home in plains, georgia. rosa lin was married to jimmy carter, the 39th president of the united states, for 77 years. but her life was so much more. abc news reporter karen travers has a look at her journey. >> rosalynn carter devoted her life to improving the lives of others. a close adviser to her husband, president jimmy carter. the first lady was a strong voice for early childhood immunization, human rights and

mental health. >> mental health and the problems of the elderly. those are the two things that i've been interested in for a long time. >> the carters have been married for over 30 years. when they moved to the white house, a journey that began in plains, georgia, where both were born. rose eileen was the oldest of four children. in 1945, she began dating her best friend's brother, james earl. jimmy carter. the next year, 18 year old rosalynn married the naval academy graduate. the navy kept them moving. their three sons were born in three different ports. their daughter, amy, was born after the family resettled in plains. rosalynn helped run the carter family peanut business before jimmy eventually entered politics. he won two terms in the georgia state senate, but lost his first bid for governor when he decided to run again. his soft spoken wife took to the campaign trail. he won. soon, rosalynn was back. >> i've campaigned full time since april of last year. i've really believe he's going to be the nominee. >> stumping to help her husband

become america's 39th president. so help me god. >> throughout it all, rosalynn championed women, children and charitable causes. >> hardworking and tenacious, caring and compassionate. she was dubbed the steel magnolia by the white house press corps, together with her husband, she promoted peace and human rights and built houses for habitat for humanity. mrs. carter authored four books, including her autobiography, first lady from plains. after leaving the white house, rosalynn carter continued to travel the world with her husband, speaking out on the issues she had championed throughout her life. one of their last interviews together was in the summer of 2021, when the carters celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. >> life with jimmy carter has been an adventure. >> the couple sat down with abc's steve osunsami. >> president carter, you say often that marrying mrs. carter was the pinnacle of your life. more than any presidency. oh, yes. >> that was the most important

thing in my life. having rosalynn say, okay, fine, finally, and staying with me all this long has been the most wonderful thing in my life. >> he's pretty wonderful in my life, too. >> karen travers, abc news. now the carters were well known for their work with habitat for humanity and that work brought them to the bay area. >> abc7 news was there when the couple came to oakland back in 2013 to finish building some townhomes. the carters were dedicated habitat volunteers for more than 35 years now our very own spencer christian knows the carters. and you've shared in the past memories of the couple. remind us how you got to know them in the first place. well i met president carter, first interviewed him back in 1988. >> but when i first met them as a couple and met mrs. carter, it was during a build, as they call it, for habitat for humanity. how appropriate. doing a live broadcast on the location where they were building a house for good morning america. i was doing the broadcast on good morning america. they were building the house for habitat for humanity in washington, d.c.

and i'd she was as amazing as he was. i mean, you know, really easy to talk to unassuming down to earth and hardworking. i mean, she was a very special person. >> yeah. and i remember you telling me that it wasn't just for the cameras, that there work on the homes. was actual work. >> they worked all day that day like. like construction workers. and actually, they didn't really want to appear much on camera because they didn't want people to assume that they were just trying to soak in the glory and the attention. >> they were in it for the right reasons. >> they were in it for the right reasons. >> and i love how you called mrs. carter one of the most consequential first ladies. what do you mean by that? >> by that, i mean one of the most impactful. i mean, right up there with eleanor roosevelt and hillary. hillary clinton as among the greatest first ladies ever, because she was involved fully as a partner in jimmy carter's not only a presidential campaign, but his campaign for governor of georgia. she was politically astute, one of his most trusted advisors. she had

sharp, keen political instincts, but also consequential, all in her own right, because of her initiatives for mental health and for care for the elderly. she was just an amazing person, and i love the fact that they they made these genuine, spontaneous public displays of affection. they were always holding hands and gazing lovingly into each other's eyes. >> so sweet. yeah. all right. well, thank you for sharing that insight that insider behind the scenes stuff, spencer. thanks moving on, some streets in downtown san francisco are still being reopened in the wake of the asia pacific economic cooperation summit at moscone center. city officials, including mayor london breed are now weighing in on how the city performed on the world stage. here's abc seven news reporter cornell bernard. >> we're working side by side. >> after a week of hosting world leaders and apec ambassadors, san francisco is dismantling the party metal security fencing stretching for blocks coming

down around moscone center and some reviews are coming in. we're very pleased with how it went. >> by and large, joe d'alessandro, president of sf travel, says he's getting positive feedback about apec. the city will benefit from this. we'll get a lot of tax revenue. we'll get a lot of people were employed as a result of this. and so it's a it's an important place for san francisco to be on the world stage. >> but some small business owners believe the summit was a failure. many downtown businesses say they can't wait for fencing to come down and streets to reopen here because as far as they're concerned, apec did not deliver the customers they'd hoped ended up being one of our slowest weeks since we opened sonar cafe manager abdul saeed says he hired extra staff, but apec attendees didn't show and his regular customers couldn't get there. >> we're expected to be like like dreamforce, how? it was really busy. we expected it to be the same, but it was really slow. >> there were issues with some businesses not receiving the

impact. in fact, in the security zone, not getting any visitors at all. and we're concerned about that. i have hope. >> i have optimism about the future because because, you know, people always say hope isn't a plan. >> in a post apec interview, mayor london breed telling abc's martha raddatz her city is dealing with challenges like homelessness and rampant drug use and an image problem outside the bay area. >> but when people are coming to san francisco, they are surprised that things aren't as bad as what they thought they were. are things perfect in san francisco? no, they're not. but we continue to work aggressively at it in order to solve some of our most pressing problems. we can't just throw our hands up. we have to keep working toward solutions and we have to be prepared to make the hard decisions to get to a better place. >> in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc seven news. >> a public health advisory is now lifted for parts of contra costa county following a refinery fire overnight in martinez. that fire at the marathon refinery raised

concerns about possible chemical releases. the county said any potential release could affect people with respiratory illnesses or sensitive city. the areas under the advisory were martinez pacheco, concord and clyde. one employee was hurt and even airlifted to the hospital. a marathon spokesperson says air monitoring indicated no offsite impact. the company is looking into the cause of that fire. now to the middle east and the latest in the israeli hamas war. the world health organization is reporting that 31 sick and premature babies have been evacuated from the al-shifa hospital in gaza. that hospital, according to the israeli military, has also been used as a base for hamas with a unique complex of tunnels underneath the facility. this all comes as new reports claim israel and hamas may be closing in on a deal to free dozens of women and children hostages in exchange for a five day cease fire. >> we are hopeful that we can get a significant, significant

number of hostages freed in the coming days. i don't want to go into the details of these talks. they are obviously very sensitive. >> there are currently over 230 israelis being held captive in gaza. developing news now, an investigation is underway into the demonstration that disrupted the california democratic endorsing convention in sacramento last night. politico reports rusty hicks, the party chair, says protesters who broke the rules will be held accountable. thousands the convention center where the party was preparing to endorse future candidates for the upcoming election. hicks did not elaborate on potential punishments, though the remaining events were canceled due to safety concerns. and take a look at this. this footage taken just a few hours ago as construction crews put their finishing touches on the i-10 freeway. it's been only eight

grant to find evidence of alien life. the nonprofit research group in mountain view has long sought the presence of a more technically advanced civilization. on the money will allow seti to expand its operations and broaden its search among the cosmos. that grant comes from the estate of the late tech entrepreneur and co-founder of qualcomm, franklin antonio, who worked with the

could become an annual event. >> it's really nice. >> yeah, and it would be nice if the weather would hold for that. >> i think it's going to hold for a while. certainly holding better than it did over the over the early part of the weekend. >> and not that you can predict the weather for when a new art installation would be here, but but for the short term. >> for the short term, well, for the short term, things are looking good for us. here's a look at live doppler seven. even though there's nothing to display in terms of precipita an i'm showing you the contrast with yesterday's live doppler seven image, which had little green areas all over it, indicating rainfall. right now we're looking at clear skies, dry conditions, and it's pretty breezy, getting gusty in some locations near the coastline right now. as a matter of fact, let's take a look at the wind gust animation for the overnight period because from 9 p.m. tonight to 9 a.m. tomorrow, we'll have a wind advisory in effect for the hills of the north bay, the east bay down to eastern santa clara valley. and over in the santa cruz mountains. and as you can see, by midnight, we'll have gusts ranging from 25 to about 36mph.

generally, in those hilly areas. and the winds will still be pretty gusty at 5 a.m. tomorrow as the morning commute gets underway. but by mid-morning, we'll see the winds tamping down quite a bit and back into a more gentle range. right now, we're also looking at the 24 hour temperature change showing it's about 2 to 4 degrees cooler in most bay area locations than at this time yesterday. so the view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco is clear. 58 degrees right now at both san francisco and oakland. mountain view, 57 and mid to upper 50s at san jose, palo alto and half moon bay. nice view of the post-sunset sky from emeryville. other temperatures right now mid upper 50s at santa rosa novato napa, fairfield, 60 at concord and 58 at livermore. and a similar view from a little bit higher angle from the east bay hills camera looking westward. these are our forecast headlines. clear and cool tonight with gusty wind over the hills, dry sunny days will be with us into next weekend. and

thanksgiving just might be the warmest of the seven days coming our way. excuse me. forecast animation overnight shows just a few high clouds giving way to sunny skies to start the day tomorrow. so in the absence of clouds tonight, the temperatures will drop a bit. it'll be a bit chilly in some of the inland areas, especially up in the north bay where we could see some upper 30s to low 40s. but generally we're talking about mid 40s as overnight lows highs tomorrow 64 at half moon bay, 66 here in san francisco, right around the bay shoreline, we'll see highs in the mid or mid to upper 60s up to about 67, maybe even 68 degrees in some spots and milder up in some north bay locations as we're looking at highs of 71 at santa rosa tomorrow and 73 at cloverdale. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. look at how mild it's going to be midweek wednesday and thursday. thanksgiving day really mild with high temperatures up near 70 degrees inland around the bay. we're talking about upper 60s and then sunny for shoppers on black friday, a little bit
