shutting down the democratic convention in california. abc7 news starts right now. build a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc7 news thrust into the national spotlight. >> a soft spoken small town girl acquired the nickname steel magnolia while rewriting what it meant to be a first lady. tonight we are paying tribute to rosalynn carter. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm diane lim. the carter center says she passed away earlier today at the age of 96 at her home in plains, georgia. rosalynn was married to jimmy carter, the 39th president of the united states, for 77 years. but her life was so much more. abc news reporter karen travers takes a look at her journey. >> rosalynn carter devoted her life to improving the lives of others. a close adviser to her husband, president jimmy carter, the first lady was a strong voice for early childhood immunization. human rights and

mental health. >> mental health and the problems of the elderly. those are the two things that i've been interested in for a long time. >> the carters have been married for over 30 years. when they moved to the white house, a journey that began in plains, georgia, where both were born. rosalynn was the oldest of four children, born in 1945. she began dating her best friend's brother, james earl jimmy carter. the next year, 18 year old rosalynn married the naval academy graduate. the navy kept them moving. their three sons were born in three different ports. their daughter, amy, was born after the family resettled in plains. rosalynn helped run the carter family peanut business before jimmy eventually entered politics. he won two terms in the georgia state senate, but lost his first bid for governor when he decided to run again. his soft spoken wife took to the campaign trail. he won. soon, rosalynn was back. >> i've campaigned full time since april of last year. i really believe he's going to be the nominee. >> stumping to help her husband

become america's 39th president. >> so help me god. >> throughout it all, rosalynn championed women, children and charitable causes. hard working and tenacious, caring and compassion, innit? she was dubbed the steel magnolia by the white house press corps together with her husband, she promoted peace and human rights and built houses for habitat for humanity. mrs. carter authored four books, including her autobiography, first lady from plains. after leaving the white house, rosalynn carter continued to travel the world with her husband, speaking out on the issues she had championed throughout her life. one of their last interviews together was in the summer of 2021, when the carters celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. >> she life with jimmy carter has been an adventure. >> the couple sat down with abc's steve osunsami, president carter, you say often that marrying mrs. carter was the pinnacle of your life. >> more than any presidency. oh, yes. >> that was the most important

thing in my life, having rosalynn say, okay, finally and staying with me all this long has been the most wonderful thing in my life. >> he's pretty wonderful in my life, too. >> karen travers, abc news. >> they are sweet. and the carters were well known for their work with habitat for humanity and that work brought them to the bay area. abc7 news was there when the couple came to oakland back in 2013 to finish building townhomes. the carters were dedicated habitat volunteers for more than 35 years. wow now spencer, you have actually gotten to know the carters over the years. how did you first meet them as a couple? >> i first met them as a couple at a build, as they call it, for habitat for humanity in washington, dc. they were building a house there. i had met and interviewed president carter previously and, you know, she was they had a true partnership in every aspect of the word because she was a tremendous political asset to president carter, working, campaigning for him as he was

running for president and for governor of georgia. and they worked together in all these humanitarian causes. the carter center trying to eradicate diseases in impoverished nations, habitat for humanity, for example. so they had a true partnership on every level. >> and i like that. you have always said that they were humble, but they were in their volunteer work because they genuinely wanted to help. >> they care deeply about people and about people's welfare across the entire world. so they they were not seeking publicity or attention. in fact, when i was interviewing them on the site of that home they were building for habitat for humanity, they really didn't want to be on camera at all. they just wanted the focus to be on the work they were doing and the people who were going to move into this house. but i said, but you've got to talk to us because we want we want you to tell our viewing audience why this is so important to you. but they were such unassuming, down to earth, caring people. and when i say caring, we all know who remember them, that they

were caring. they cared about the welfare of other people, but they cared so deeply for each other. this was a couple, even during their time in the white house, who didn't shy away from public displays of affection. they they were often seen holding hands or gazing lovingly into each other's eyes. so it was just a beautiful relationship to watch and to see in person. >> that is so lovely, genuine and heartfelt. and for a lifetime. absolutely. spencer, thank you for sharing that. >> my pleasure. >> well, we first informed you of mrs. carter's passing with an alert with the abc seven news app. you too can receive breaking news and weather updates sent directly to your mobile device by downloading the app and enabling those push alerts. well, moving on, a 56 year old man is dead after a hit and run in san lorenzo. this happened at about nine this morning near the intersection of hesperian boulevard and bachman road. officers say a black 20 and seven ford mustang hit a man crossing the road and then left

the scene. that driver was later caught by alameda county sheriff's deputies and booked on charges of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter for a public health advisory is now lifted for parts of contra costa county following a refinery fire overnight in martinez. that fire at the marathon refinery raised concerns about possible chemical releases. the county said any potential release could affect people with respiratory illnesses or sensitivity. the areas under the advisory were martinez, pacheco, concord and clyde. one employee was also hurt and airlifted to the hospital. a marathon spokesperson says air monitoring indicated no offsite impact. the company is looking into the cause of that fire. the city of san francisco put on its best face for the apec conference, but there are still challenges that will need to be faced with the dignitaries gone. mayor london breed sat down with this week's co-anchor, martha raddatz, to talk about apec and her vision for the future.

>> the thing that gives me hope is the fact that finally some of the policy decisions, some of the financial investments they are working and they are making a difference. they are attracting businesses, new leases are being signed in the downtown area and other parts of the city. so you're not going to tell me you're worried about anything? well part of it is it's really me as a leader. it's important that i am confident about the condition of the city and that i'm continuing to communicate the message necessary to ensure that people know how these things are working. i think you can find the full interview at abc seven or abc news .com. >> developing news now. an investigation is underway into the demonstration that disrupted the california democratic endorsing convention in sacramento last night. politico reports rusty hicks, the party chair, says protesters who broke the rules will be held accountable.

the convention center where the party was preparing to endorse future candidates for the upcoming election. hicks did not elaborate on potential punishments. the remaining events were canceled due to safety concerns us. a call today for more people to pay attention to an epidemic of violence from a member of the president's cabinet secretary deb haaland is the first native american to serve as a cabinet secretary. she posted on social media today about red shawl day. the day is meant to raise awareness and honor indigenous victims of violent crimes. the justice department says indigenous american women are missing and murdered at a higher rate than the national average. well this footage was taken just a few hours ago as construction crews put their finishing touches on the i-10 freeway. it's been only eight days since an arson fire damaged a large stretch of freeway in downtown la. governor newsom was joined by vice

research group in mountain view has long sought the presence of a more technically advanced civilization. on the money will allow seti to expand its operations and broaden its search among the cosmos. the grant comes from the estate of the late tech entrepreneur and co-founder of qualcomm, franklin antonio, who worked with the group for 12 years in the east bay, one of the largest competition of its kind, is taking place at uc berkeley. take a look. the nonprofit robo labs foundation is hosting a massive student robotic competition. organizers say 120 robotics teams from across the country and five other countries, including kazakhstan, panama and mexico, are taking part. robots made by middle and high school students are competing in robot soccer matches. >> oh, i've seen some pretty cool robots. a lot of teams are using almost like a flywheel to just how you shoot tennis balls. if you have if you've ever played tennis before. they've basically made a tennis ball shooter to shoot these game

more calm wind levels. right now, we're looking at a fairly sharp change in temperature over the last 24 hours for to five or even more degrees cooler right now across most of the bay area than at this time yesterday evening. here's a view from sutro tower under clear skies looking out over san francisco where right now it's 56 degrees, 57 in oakland, mountain view, 55 mid to upper 50s at san jose, palo alto and half moon bay. nice clear view from emeryville looking toward the bay bridge 52 right now in santa rosa up in the north bay 55 at novato, napa 5354 at fairfield, concord and livermore also mid-fifties. and one final live picture from our rooftop camera looking across the breezy embarcadero and these are forecast headlines. clear and cool tonight. gusty over the hills. dry sunny days lie ahead all the way into next weekend. and thanksgiving just may turn out to be the warmest day in the seven day period. so for tonight, look for a few passing high clouds. that's about it. we're talking clear skies going into the morning hours, giving

way to obviously a bright sunrise overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s highs tomorrow, mid 50s, mid 50s, mid 60s, rather at the coast, mid to upper 60s around the bay shoreline. lots of the inland areas will not get above the mid 60s, but down in the south bay. look for 69 at san jose and up in the north bay, 71 at santa rosa and 73 at cloverdale. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. as you can see, we have seven mainly sunny days ahead. notice the midweek warmup though, wednesday and thursday. thanksgiving day will probably be the mildest days. in fact, as i said earlier, thanksgiving may turn out to be the warmest in the seven days, with highs inland up to about 70 degrees or perhaps even above upper 60s around the bay shoreline. there'll be just a slight cooldown under sunny skies for friday. shoppers for black friday and then going into next weekend, although skies remain sunny, temperatures will drop. >> now, abc seven sports with chris alvarez as well. >> come to sports live from
