♪ the it told me he was speeding, didn't even get a ticket. >> the fight for safe streets. family members loved ones and leaders are all struggling with ways to stop these devastating and deadly traffic crashes. but tonight, they are documenting their hopes for building a better bay area. with that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm diane lim. it has been nine years since then. san francisco mayor ed lee helped launch vision zero. sf but now the city seems farther than ever from reaching its goal

of zero traffic deaths next year . and it's an issue we are seeing across the bay area. so tonight we begin with abc seven news reporter j.r stone who went to find what changes might be coming from the steps of san francisco's city hall. shoes, flowers, even a stroller in memory of those who died in traffic crashes in san francisco and across the bay area. >> the car coming down. franklin flew up onto the sidewalk and crushed him against the building. >> richard zeman's son, andrew, was a paraeducator at sherman elementary school in san francisco. he was killed during that accident in 2021. two years later, and the number of pedestrian traffic fatalities has not improved. >> we hear nothing's better. the numbers are the same as last year and worse than the year before. >> last year was the worst since 2014. so. we're at 16 pedestrians already this year, 22 total numbers of traffic

related fatalities. sunday night, local and state lawmakers remembered the victims killed state senator scott wiener and numerous san francisco supervisors voiced their support for speed cameras, a tool that will soon be installed in san francisco, san jose and oakland. >> for the first time. >> if you speed if you engage in this reckless behavior, you will all have a consequence. >> elizabeth chavez's daughter, eileen, was just five years old when she was killed while walking with family in a san jose crosswalk near her school back in 2014. elizabeth fought back tears, describing her shock when she learned that similarly, a four year old girl was killed at fourth and king in san francisco, near oracle park earlier this year. >> every day we hear that people are getting hit left and right. but when they told me i was devastated, it was like reliving

again what had happened to see a family who was visiting from korea, who left the country with a death certificate and not their daughter. >> that is unacceptable. >> many here also hopeful that city leaders invest in making physical changes to the infrastructure at dangerous intersections across the area. elizabeth says. so much more needs to be done because the pain of losing a daughter is something that never goes away. the only thing that they provided us was the black and white bow and a dollar. >> so and they had found it right next to her. she was holding it in the palm of her hand, and it was right next to her, just slowing down the speeds. >> you know, andrew was killed in a school zone at and there was no reason anyone should have been driving that fast through a school zone. and i don't even think that person was driving faster than the flow of traffic.

they were all speeding, you know, that should never have happened. >> the victims you heard from there were also very upset about accountability, both saying that the people initially arrested in their children's deaths basically got a slap on the wrist, probation in one case, and no ticket in the other. they question what kind of message we're sending without what they call accountability. j.r. stone, abc seven news, j.r, thank you. >> we move now to the east bay. major changes are coming in hopes of reshaping one of alameda county's most dangerous corridors. as according to our media partners at the east bay times, berkeley is now the last city to sign off on the san pablo avenue corridor project, a large scale reimagining of the stretch from oakland up to albany. that project will add bus bulbs lighting signals, ada ramps, flashing beacons and other traffic calming measures. the hope is this will enable more people to be able to walk, bike and board busses as construction is slated to start

another. tonight, the new york times is reporting sam altman will not be returning as ceo of san francisco based openai. altman was in constant negotiation with the board this weekend, pushing to return as head of the company behind the hit chatgpt. but it looks as if those talks have derailed. altman was unexpectedly fired by the board on friday over a murky mix of reasons. former ceo of twitch emmett shear will now reportedly step in as interim ceo. all right, let's jump into our abc7 news advancer at 11. what it is it's our useful way of getting you prepared and ahead of the headlines you'll be hearing much more about in the days to come. and of course tonight we are getting you ready for the thanksgiving travel week. first live check on the roads calm tonight from our san mateo bridge camera. you can see they're pretty smooth sailing. even so, triple a expects this to be the busiest thanksgiving travel season since 2019 and the third highest since 2000. of

course, this wednesday will be the day to avoid on the roads. but how about the skies? let's take a look outside at sfo. triple a is expecting the busiest thanksgiving since 2005 with tuesday and wednesday being especially jammed. now if you are flying out of here, you may be in the clear. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on that, plus the concern of rising flu cases from health experts. thanksgiving travelers were on the move sunday at san francisco international airport. >> we flew today because we were trying to avoid the crowds. >> megan green and her son cole are off to denver for the holidays. manager to miss the madness airport officials say the peak of thanksgiving travel has already been hit. >> friday was our busiest day. we had about 76,000 people come through, numbers nearing pre-pandemic levels and airport officials expect the trend to continue. what we're asking people is to plan ahead. give yourself extra time, and also

use alternative methods of transportation. we're trying to get more people to use bart and use the airtrain and as millions of americans are set to travel and gather for the thanksgiving holiday, health officials are warning about increasing levels of respiratory illness. >> so right now, we have certain parts of the country that are really at critical levels of flu. seven states plus d.c. and puerto rico are experiencing high or very high levels of respiratory illness activity. symptoms, including a fever, cough and sore throat. >> in california right now, we don't have a lot of flu, but we have a higher than normal levels for this time of the year. and it's coming very early. so it just makes us feel a little bit nervous for after the holidays. >> dr. peter chin-hong at ucsf says people should be taking precautions. >> that might mean wearing a mask in risky settings like public transit or at airports, particularly when you're entering and exiting the plane before ventilation. >> and he says don't skip out on

rosalynn carter. ceremonies will run tomorrow through wednesday in atlanta and sumner county, georgia, all of it to celebrate the life of the former first lady who passed away earlier today at her home in plains, georgia. rosalynn was married to jimmy carter, the 39th president of the united states, for 77 years. but her life was so much more. a soft spoken, small town girl acquired the label steel magnolia while rewriting what it meant to be a first lady. >> mental health and the problems of the elderly. those are the two things that i've been interested in for a long time. >> the former first lady was a champion for women and a fierce advocate for human rights at large in 2021, the carters did an interview for their 75th wedding anniversary, and the former president did not hold back on his thoughts of his wife and stand with me all this long has been the most wonderful thing in my life. >> he's pretty wonderful in my

workweek after world leaders from around the asia pacific region descended on the city by the bay. tonight abc7 news reporter cornell bernard takes a look at what san francisco shows performance on the world stage means going forward. >> we're working side by side after a week of hosting world leaders and apec ambassadors. san francisco is dismantling the party metal security fencing stretching for blocks coming down around moscone center and some reviews are coming in. >> we're very pleased with how it went by and large. >> joe d'alessandro, president of sf travel, says he's getting positive feedback about apec. >> the city will benefit from this. we'll get a lot of tax revenue, we'll get a lot of people were employed as a result of this. and so it's a it's an important place for san francisco to be on the world stage. >> but some small business owners believe the summit was a failure. many downtown businesses say they can't wait for fencing to come down and streets to reopen here because as far as they're concerned, apec did not deliver the

let's try that. >> it's $1 million forecast. yes. >> let's take a look at what's happening right now. and it is clear enough that you could call it $1 million forecast compared with yesterday when we had green rain all over the radar screen. we've got a gusty wind right now, not so much at the surface, but check out the hills. we have gusts over 30mph, over 35mph right now in some locations. and as a result of the gusty wind, we have a wind advisory in effect for all of the various hills and mountains of the north bay to the east bay, to the eastern santa clara hills, to the santa cruz mountains, until 9:00 tomorrow morning. winds winds will generally be out of the north at about 20 to 35mph. gusts easily up to 50mph at the peaks, up to 65mph. there's a possibility of downed tree limbs. and, of course, objects that are loose being blown around. the temperature change over the 24 hours is rather significant. most locations are about 5 or 6 degrees cooler right now than at this time last night. but the skies are clear and it's a pleasant evening, as you look out over san francisco

tonight talks to free hostages from hamas are reportedly making continued progress since the israeli military is sharing even more video of what it claims are tunnels beneath the biggest hospital in gaza city. the military leaders allege it was being used as a command center for the hamas terrorist group. abc news reporter lionel moise has the latest on the fight in

israel. >> continues to pound gaza. dozens reportedly killed in strikes on refugee camps over the weekend, including two un run schools. pressure is mounting on israel to accept a cease fire as talks continue to secure the release of the 236 people, including americans still being held by hamas. us and israeli sources telling abc, a large group of hostages could be released in exchange for a cease fire that could last from 3 to 7 days. the number of hostages and length of cease fire are still being debated. >> some of the issues that were at odds have now been closed out, but we are not finished there making some progress. and we hope that that will be concluded soon so that these people can finally come home. >> on sunday, the israeli military released video they say shows hamas militants bringing some of the hostages into gaza's largest hospital. israel says this surveillance video shows hamas moving a wounded hostage

into gaza's al-shifa hospital on october 7th. hours after that surprise attack. israel which has been facing criticism for its military operations near the hospital, also releasing video showing a drone entering what they claim is a hamas tunnel beneath the medical complex which israel claims was used as a hamas command center, a claim hamas denies. the world health organization has described al-shifa as a death zone. nine premature babies reportedly died after being removed from incubators when electricity ran out. some critically ill patients remain at the hospital, but on sunday say 31 babies were evacuated to a hospital in southern gaza. those babies expected to soon be moved to egypt for more specialized care. lionel moise, abc news, new york . >> public health advisory is now lifted for parts of contra costa county tonight. a fire at a refinery in martinez has raised some new concerns about possible hazardous chemical releases in

the area. the fire happened overnight at the marathon refinery. the area is under advisory. were martinez, pacheco, concord and clyde. one employee was hurt and airlifted to the hospital. a marathon spokesperson says air monitoring indicated no offsite impact. the company is looking into the cause of the fire for right now, the united nations is trying to draft a treaty to end plastic pollution across the globe. u.n. ambassador says are negotiating a deal to curb the use of plastics on land and sea. it has been tough getting the world nations to agree on a plan, though, since plastic is largely made from crude oil and natural gas, many oil producing nations are pushing for better recycling measures. but environmentalists say the production of plastic is what needs to be scaled way back. what our research shows is that plastics are affecting the planet in a way that they're destabilizing the function of this planet that we live on in a way that makes it less safe for

us, and it makes it less predictable and it makes it more dangerous for us to live here and less less sustainable for us to live on the planet. the un will hold two more rounds of negotiations in 2024 to try and finalize that treaty. a un united nations is forecasting plastic production to triple by 2060. thousands of people flocked to san francisco this weekend for the west coast crafts fair today and yesterday. 300 small craft makers from all over the country set up booths with all kinds of products from vintage clothes to monster puppets and even artsy toilet seats. >> oh, my gosh. people are so stoked. everyone is just like meeting the artisans, meeting their friends. there's some really good food booths in the back and it's just like smiles all around. >> and attendees were thrilled with the variety just in time for some holiday shopping. now, whether or not you are ready, the holiday shopping season is

all caught up to brock purdy. oh, how quickly things can change the niners. they're back on track. two game winning streak in a day. purdy became the first 40 niners quarterback since joe montana in 1989 to have a perfect passer rating and the first in franchise history to get that perfect rating while attempting more than 20 passes. purdy went 21 of 25 333 yards, three touchdowns. he's now thrown six touchdowns in the last two games. that little slump and three game losing streak feels so long ago. but in true brock fashion never satisfied always looking for how he can improve. >> yeah what an honor but man at the same time i feel like you know there's still some plays and stuff that, you know i wish i had back so i'm not completely content with just that. but i thought it was a great game
