into gaza, according to u.s. and israeli officials. the number of hostages to be released and the length of the cease-fire that would be imposed are still being negotiated. >> some of the issues that were at odds have now been closed out, but we are not finished. >> in israel, a series of marches and protests over the weekend demanding the government push harder for a deal. >> they've come together just now because they are demanding the ouster of the israeli government. >> this, as the israeli military releasing what they say is surveillance video showing gunmen bringing two hostages inside al-shifa hospital. in one of the videos, time stemmed from the morning of hamas' october 7th rampage into israel, you can see multiple gunmen forcing a man into the building right past reception. another video shows a wounded hostage being wheeled into the hospital by men with ak-47s. now in their sixth day there, israel releasing drone footage which they say shows the inside of a hamas tunnel 30 feet

underground, at the end of it as sophisticated steel blast door. >> we are waiting to see evidence of an actual command post. >> this will take time. finding that shaft, it was under one of these pickup trucks, now we've opened the blast door and we are looking behind that. >> the israeli military justifying its controversial search of al-shifa by saying there was a hamas command post beneath it, which hamas denies. hundreds of patients and other civilians fleeing al-shifa, saying israel ordered them to evacuate, israel saying the hospital requested their assistance with evacuations. 31 premature infants taken to a hospital in southern gaza, clinging to life. doctors there working to stabilize them, incubators that al-shifa losing power over a week ago. and after six weeks of continuous bombardments, many of the buildings in gaza have been leveled. the growing number of wounded brought to hospitals already overflowing. an estimated 1.5 million are

displaced, and thousands continue to stream southward past the ruins toward safety. >> for the past week we have been telling you the story about those 40 palestinian premature infants at al-shifa hospital who have to be taken out of their incubators due to lack of electricity. a short time ago, we learned that 28 of them were transferred out of gaza and into egypt for further treatment. george? >> i hope they're going to be okay. thanks very much. now to the hijacking in the red sea, a cargo ship seized over its connection to israel, crew taken hostage. james longman has the story. good morning, james. >> yeah, good morning, george. yemen's houthi rebels say they have seized an israeli linked cargo ship in the red sea. the iranian backed group says that any israeli-linked vessel is a legitimate target given the ongoing war in gaza, what they call ugly crimes in the occupied west bank. the united states calls this a flagrant breach of international law, and the situation in the

red sea remains pretty serious. this is a ship which was loaded with crew from ukraine and mexico. not, however, israel. the israelis say there are no israeli nationals on board, and the parent company is owned by an israeli businessman, so the world is watching to see whether or not this situation can be resolved. this is not the first aggression by the houthis. they fired a number of missiles and drones at southern israel since the attacks of october 7th, so now the world watches to see whether or not this ship can be brought back to safety. robin? >> james, thank you so much. back here this morning we are remembering former first lady rosalynn carter, who died sunday at age 96. in a statement, former president jimmy carter said she was an equal partner in everything he ever accomplished. senior national correspondent steve osunsami joins us from atlanta with much more. good morning, steve. >> good morning to you, robin.

our sources tell us the former first lady last week was having good days, then bad days, then good again, while her husband, the former president, has been in hospice care for months, she only started on friday, and now she's gone. >> this former first lady of the united states would tell people that her purpose in life was to help create a more caring society. [applause] rosalynn carter was without question the most trusted advisor to her husband, the 39th american president who, in a statement sunday, called her "my equal partner in everything i ever accomplished." she was born and raised near the peanut farms of plains, georgia, a world away from the big city. ruth carter was her childhood friend and would introduce her to ruth's older brother, jimmy. they were married for 77 years. they became a couple after jimmy carter came home from the naval academy in the summer of 1945. he proposed that december, but she initially turned him down to focus on school.

>> it was a long time, but i had promised my father on his deathbed that i would finish college. he had never been able to go to any kind of college, but he was persistent, and i gave in. >> they had three boys, then daughter amy was born when rosalynn turned 40. abc's barbara walters spoke with the carters in 1976. >> it was my greatest accomplishment. >> their journey took them from the georgia state house in 1962 to the white house in 1977. >> my name is jimmy carter, and i'm running for president. >> they called rosalynn the "steel magnolia" on the campaign trail. during their time in washington, she was a champion for mental health issues and for equal opportunities for women, but she and her husband are arguably most celebrated what they did after leaving the white house, founding the carter center, which has helped to end diseases in far parts of the world. just six months ago, she

announced that she had dementia. the former president at the time was already in hospice care at their home. the two are the longest married presidential couple, and celebrated their success in this last television interview ever, that aired on this network. >> what advice do you have for people who want to make it last? >> first of all, choose the right person to marry. i made rosalynn say okay finally, and staying with me this long has been the most wonderful thing in my life. >> he's pretty wonderful in my life, too. >> rosalynn carter died in her home sunday with her family by her side. she was 96. >> ceremonies celebrating her life will begin a week from today. that afternoon, her body will arrive here at the carter center for a public visitation. her funeral is scheduled next

expect 46,000 flights. it is a ton, and through the thanksgiving holiday, tsa is expected to screen 30 million passengers, a huge number of people with the busiest days tomorrow and wednesday. we are already seeing it be pretty busy at airports. it is also expected to be a record number of people traveling on the road, too, but we have that great news if you're in california that you mentioned, linsey. that 10 freeway in los angeles had shut down because of the major fire over a week ago. they've actually shattered some expectations they are. they've been working around the clock. they have it back in business ready for the holiday commute. governor gavin newsom said the crews made sure to get it fully operational after a fire engulfed a portion of the freeway, shutting it down in both directions. it means it'll be fully operational so people in california can go get ready to sit in traffic for the holidays. robin? >> [laughs] it's so true. thank you as always. we will turn to ginger for the holiday forecasts, a

and that is a major concern for advertisers that don't want their ads to be next to this type of content. >> in a blog post, x said the report completely misrepresented the user experience, to undermine freedom of speech and mislead advertisers. a spokesman for the company called the report contrived, saying media matters deliberately followed pro-nazi accounts to get advertising to appear. musk went further, threatening a thermonuclear lawsuit against media matters and all those who colluded in this "fraudulent attack." media matters called musk a bully who threatens meritless lawsuits. the white house has condemned elon musk for endorsing what it called a hideous anti-semitic conspiracy theory. linsey? >> aaron, thank you. now the latest on the ousting of sam altman from openai. elizabeth schulze is breaking it down, including what it could mean for the future and safety of artificial intelligence. elizabeth, microsoft just picked up altman? >> that's right.

it's been a dizzying 72 hours. in this latest twist, microsoft has announced that altman will join the company to lead a new advanced ai research team. microsoft is already openai's biggest investor, and has put billions of dollars into the start-up that created chatgpt. altman was unexpected he fired as ceo by the board of directors late friday. they accused him of not being candid in his communications and in his place they hired the former ceo of the video gaming platform, twitch, during the company. altman had been at the helm since 2019. he was outspoken about the potential for artificial intelligence but also about its risks, telling rebecca jarvis earlier this year that we should be a little bit scared of ai. in a cryptic post this morning, altman said of his new role, "the mission continues." robin? >> that it does. elizabeth, thank you so much. now to the nfl's clash of the titans on "monday night football" tonight, a super bowl rematch between the chiefs and the eagles. will reeve is there in kc.

stage in rio de janeiro just days after fan died attending one of her eras tour shows under excessive heat. anna benavides machado died after an hour of seeking medical attention at the stadium, according to concert organizers. officials saying she lost consciousness then suffered a heart attack. the heat index in rio reached a high of 138 degrees fahrenheit friday, a level where experts say heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat strokes are highly possible with prolonged exposure or physical activity. the 12-time grammy winner taking to instagram saying she was devastated, overwhelmed by grief, and, "this is the last thing i ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to brazil." the 33-year-old singer seen stopping the show to get her fans water. >> it's very hot, so when they say they need water when it's this hot, they need it. we need to get water to them. >> at another point, even

how does donna kelce handle the fact that her sons are playing against each other? >> i think you just root for the offense. i think she's hoping for a high-scoring game. she wants both offenses to score. you know, she's looking for a 49-48, and maybe a mixed extra point at the end. both her sons are playing great football, they're scoring points on the offense. travis can have four or five touchdowns, and the eagles can do the tush push, and jason can be part of that getting those touchdowns. that makes it a lot easier when you are just rooting for one side of the ball. they're not going against each other, and you're just proud of your sons. >> we have a few seconds left. who's going to win? >> ooh, um... it's hard for me, being in the nfc east and going against the eagles so many years, for me to root for them.

>> we are sharing our favorite thanksgiving dishes, two incredible chefs are here to put a spin on them. michael chernow, along with chef sohla el-waylly, author of the cookbook "start here." >> and you can scan the qr code to get all the recipes, and shop for all the ingredients. we are making it easy. you are going to start us off, what do you have? >> excuse me, what i have is a cold. [coughing] we have cranberry sauce. i'm good, it is something else i have. cranberry sauce! but is it out of the can? >> this is traditional. canned cranberry sauce, it is easy, you can slice it up and throw it on the table or spice it up. >> how are you going to do that? >> we are going to spice it up today and do basically some caramelized cinnamon apples, some stewed apples we will drop on top of the cranberry sauce. >> i like that idea! >> apples in a pan.

you're going to simply let these things cook down a little bit. we are going to add some sugar, some brown sugar. we are going to add some apple cider. >> it smells so good. it's opening my sinuses. this is what i need! >> that's it, that apple cider for the sinuses -- there we go, we just smooth that out a little bit. we will add just a little bit and add some maple syrup, sweeten it up. >> i like that, michael. >> we are going to add a little cinnamon. >> you can never go wrong. >> some nutmeg, that fall season. and a bit of vanilla extract. so we let this stew for a couple minutes, 3-4 minutes, check on it. you want the apples to be fork tender, and it's going to kind of look like this. what you do, once it is a little fork tender, you add a cornstarch slurry. so you take apple cider and add a little cornstarch, mix it up, and it thickens up the apple. >> is that how it got thicker? they don't look mushy.

>> they're not mushy, they've got a little bit of a bite to them. once you are doing that a couple more minutes, you had a little pecans, nuts. a little bit of butter. then we are going to finish it and it's going to look just like this when we are done. this is how we are going to serve it. >> i've got to eat that! >> we are going to let michael taste that, and robin. you guys give it your -- >> that is a nice little -- >> and the mint really brightens it up. >> can i borrow michael? we have to get on mine. in my house we have traditional dishes. i love the appetizers, that time before the meal where we sit with our cocktail and we gather, and i always make a spinach artichoke dip, i do it every year. it's a crowd pleaser. michael, you're going to take it to the next level. >> i am going to take it to the next level. if you want to get people's taste buds going for thanksgiving, you give them -- >> it is warm, it is savory.

>> and you start with bacon. that's how we start this thing. >> that's new for me. there's no meat in mine. >> this is literally the secret to a spinach artichoke dip. you start it with bacon. you render bacon fat. once that bacon fat is rendered, you pull the bacon out, and you add the onions and garlic. >> cook it in the bacon fat? >> in the bacon fat. this is how you spice up spinach artichoke dip better than ever. and once your onions and garlic are a little cooked down, you're going to add your artichokes, cook these bad boys down. >> do you also add bacon bits? >> you add them back in. >> okay, later. >> you cook down the artichokes a little bit, then you add your spinach, you reintroduce the bacon. >> it's going to look like this when you add all the cheese, too. >> you add the sour cream to it, cream cheese. >> that is also new. let's cook ours down a little bit and show everybody the finished product after we throw it to george.

because you have sort of a complicated but delicious stuffing? >> my mom used to always make a ground meat, rice, and raisin stuffing, a greek stuffing, and sohla is putting a little persian twist on it. >> it is a mashup of that greek stuffing but cooked in the style of a tahdig. so we get that crispy bottom. i put it in a pan in one layer and put the onions on top and then you don't touch it. just let it go. the bottom is going to get really brown and crispy and the onions are going to get really tender and soft. then, to this, we are going to add our spices. this is what gives that greek flavor. >> what do you have there? >> cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, a big pinch of salt, and then there is also some wine to deglaze. >> nice. >> you have to have a little bit of wine. it's going to extract all those alcohol soluble flavors. crank that up, you want to let it cook until the wine is fully

reduced, and then we are going to mix in some raisins and nuts, and that gives us -- >> what are those, almonds? >> raisins and almonds. traditionally it is pine nuts, but i'm allergic, so -- >> [laughs] okay. >> we are using almonds, but you can use any kind of nut, and it gives it that sweet-savory situation. we have one right here and we are going to layer it just like a tahdig. here we have a mixture of saffron and yogurt and a little bit of salt, and an egg yolk, and that is going to help give us our crispy layer. we are going to mix that with some of our parboiled basmati rice. this rice has already been boiled in salted water just like you cook pasta. so it's, like, partially cooked. and then we will layer it up. >> that is what creates this crust right here. >> that is what makes the crust. >> that looks awesome. doesn't that look good? >> we layer some of the rice, some of the meat, and it all steams together. and you flip it out. >> is it good? >> can i get an "opa?"

[laughs] >> we are doing a kale salad. this salad, i've been making this with my family for years and years. i want to give you a little tip,

what you're doing right now with kale. you want to massage kale. you want to massage kale before you make the salad because it is a hardy, thick leafy green and you want to soften it up. so i like to do that with olive oil, a little lemon juice, sometimes a little salt. >> oh, you put the lemon in early, too? salt, i do. i've never done the lemon. okay! >> sometimes we even throw avocado in there and mash the avocado into the kale. but for thanksgiving, we are keeping it fall. we make this salad pretty much every year with sweet potatoes, roasted, apples, shaved. >> everybody loves that part. >> quinoa to give a little bit of an oomph to the dish. >> i like a bite. >> thanksgiving we use pomegranate. it makes it beautiful, it's got a sweet little burst to it. >> it is so pretty. >> and we threw in some walnuts. this is like a crowd-pleasing salad. it's amazing on thanksgiving because it looks beautiful but you can do this any time of year. >> we cook this for every party, and the dijon vinaigrette. >> this is a honey apple

vinaigrette. it's amazing. apple cider vinegar, a little olive oil, a little honey, shake it up in a jar like this, nothing fancy, and that's how it's incredible everything will single time. >> linsey, we have to have dessert. you've got to save room. please tell us. >> i think families are either pumpkin pie families, sweet potato pie families. we are a sweet potato pie family. sohla is taking the idea of pumpkin pie on steroids to the baked alaska concept here. >> you can also make this with sweet potato. we are going to jazz up some store-bought vanilla ice cream by stirring in a little pumpkin. or sweet potato puree. hey, a little bit of spice, a little bit of salt helps balance out the sweetness. you want to layer the ice cream with some store-bought gingersnaps. >> should we put the gingersnaps first? >> go however -- >> whatever moves you? all right, we're doing it. >> think of it as a giant ice cream sandwich. you cannot go wrong.

so we are starting out with something pretty simple, ice cream and cookies, but we are going to level it up, cover the whole thing in a meringue. we made this earlier, just egg whites and sugar whipped up, and you decorate your ice cream. after you freeze it, you flip it out, and when it's decorated like this you can put it back in the freezer for like six hours. >> we are out of time, but we've got to get to the fun stuff. the fire. >> we are going to light it on fire. oh, god. >> uh-oh. we are having a malfunction with the -- >> oh, no! oh, god! >> we've got to have fire. anybody have, like, a match? >> do you know how to use this? up, down, trigger -- we did it! light it on fire, and it's light it on fire, and it's just like, wow. >> ooh, aah! >> it takes something simple and makes it spectacular. >> people at the table, are you enjoying your food? michael, sohla, thank you so much for helping us cook for our friendsgiving. tony and the harlem grown team,
