basketball game and conquered takes a sudden turn when a scuffle among two nine and ten year olds leads to a parent getting involved and even appearing to throw a punch. at one point, watch in slow motion as the parent from the concord team makes physical contact with the player in the orange from the pittsburgh team, a lady in a red outfit came and attacked one of the that player in the orange uniform, hit him, grabbed him by his collar or neck and dragged all him around and threw him on the ground with her when she got up, she then assaulted the father and hit him in the chest. >> tony alvarado's nephew plays for the pittsburgh squad representing good shepherd catholic school, who was playing the team in the white jerseys from saint francis of assisi high school, a game that took place at a nearby charter school in concord on sunday. >> alvarado and many others are outraged that the woman was only escorted out of the building.

>> none of us expected her not to be arrested. she was not arrested. she was walked out of the building with the police officers and escorted to her car. >> me and karina were there clear as day. >> she literally came, hit him, swung him around like a rag doll. she got up and struck his dad. >> concord police confirmed to us that the woman here was initially arrested, but later released, citing lack of evidence and saying that video evidence showed that the elements of a crime were not present. the parent who recorded this video chose not to show her face, but described what happened as very sad to see. >> she needs to be charged for the things she did because it's absolutely not right. you don't do that to a 9 or 10 year old. you know, it's just not right. >> concord police say the woman in question was trying to separate the child and was knocked to the ground in the process. video though, shows the

boy in the orange jersey actually walking away from the one he was in a disagreement with. >> it's a sad sight, you know, got definitely emotional on my own because it's like, holy crap. like, i mean, i'm very protect our children and it's just like, what are we how can this lady just walk away without any consequences? it seemed like officers do urge anyone with additional video of this incident to reach out to them. >> i did reach out to the principal at saint francis of assisi, and she tells me she was made aware of the situation monday and has no comment. she says cyo is not a school related function or activity. it is a church league run by the diocese of oakland. and i'm told by that by those involved that that action, that action here will likely be taken against the parent, possibly as early as tuesday. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> all right, j.r, thank you. and let's take a live look now

at the tarmac from sfo tonight. it's going to be a busy week there over the next handful of days. and everyone wants to know what the weather is going to be coming up, abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking what to expect in the travel forecast. sandhya. yeah ahmed the problem spot is going to be from the midwest to the south right now, but tomorrow is going to be much of the eastern seaboard. so let's take a look at live doppler seven. you will notice the midwest, the upper midwest is dealing with snow on the back side of this rain, heavy at times, severe weather potential. is there back east and across the southeast tomorrow, if you are traveling 47 in new york, d.c, 56. some of the problem spots will be around there. so potential delays, 83, miami, 56 in denver and portland and we're looking at 81 down south. so let's take a look at the temperatures around the state, 71 at yosemite. if you're heading up to tahoe, 57 degrees. no travel issues across the state, 78 in san diego. i'll be back with a look at what you can

expect for thanksgiving here in the bay area coming right up. dan and amy. >> all right, sandy, thank you. well, with the holiday rush heating up, so are the restaurant reservations in the city? yeah. after the handful of very difficult pandemic years, many san francisco restaurants say this holiday season is off to a very strong start. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns shows us how the bookings are booming. >> talk to restaurant staff around san francisco the next few weeks and you'll likely hear a similar story. >> we have a full calendar every night through the first through december up until the 20th, i believe. and that probably will fill in as well everywhere from the embarcadero to soma to the marina. >> restaurants say their holiday bookings are booming. hillary newsome is one of the owners of balboa cafe. she says business this year is expected to rival or even exceed pre-pandemic numbers. >> we're definitely seeing people willing to get out there in larger groups. that's the biggest differentiator for us this year. >> but it's not just large groups who are heading out this

holiday season. liz curtis is the ceo of daly city based events company, the fulcrum group. >> we're doing a whole lot of homeowner parties, small orders, large orders, big corporate events, small corporate events, holiday parties. >> similar sentiments were echoed by matthew dolan, the executive chef at 25. lusk dolan tells us the san francisco dining scene as a whole is finally seeing a substantial recovery following the pandemic. >> i'm hearing about new restaurants opening and some of my colleagues are raising money successfully to open their dream restaurants here in san francisco. >> the uptick in business is expected to last beyond the holiday season, too. in fact, every restaurant we talked to is anticipating a strong 2024. but after years of slow business. dolan says he's looking forward to the future, no matter how hectic it may be. >> we are optimistic. we are optimistic because we're seeing a trend and it feels pretty good in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> meanwhile, this year's thanksgiving holiday travel is looking to be one of the busiest

seasons in decades. the tsa says the 30 million fliers will take to the skies for the holiday. meanwhile, according to triple a, an estimated 49 million americans are expected to hit the roads for the travel weekend. >> wednesday has notoriously been the worst day to be on the roads before thanksgiving. and that time frame between 2 and 6 p.m. is the worst time to be on the road because at that point, you're mixing holiday travelers on the roads with commuters, people who have to work on wednesday and with serious weather predicted to roll into the northeast over the next two days, travelers may run into some heavy delays, but there is a silver lining. >> gas prices have been falling across the nation, which should make it a little easier on our wallets. >> all right. let's take a live look from our lake tahoe camera tonight because it's beginning to look a bit more like winter up there, at least as far as the ski season is concerned. heavenly mountain resort will now be opening for the season tomorrow. several other sierra resorts are already open, including mount rose and boreal. if you're thinking of heading up

soon, keep in mind many new parking reservation systems are installed at some ski resorts to try to limit traffic around tahoe. but one local expert has an insider tip. >> if you hit those western slope resorts at bear valley and dodge ridge, it's still kind of old school style where you could just drive right up, park your car and walk up onto the resort themselves. sugar bowl, boreal, mount rose, diamond peak and homewood. it's just drive on up and most other resorts in tahoe are looking at a december 1st date to kick off the season. >> happening tomorrow, president biden will take his first action on the fentanyl crisis since entering a partnership with china last week. >> the white house says his meeting aims to accelerate efforts to counter the flow of fentanyl into the united states. >> this is the first step his administration has taken since holding talks with chinese president xi jinping at apec here in the bay area last week, president biden struck a deal with xi to curb the export of

fentanyl making chemicals from china into the us. all right. let's move now to the firing of openai ceo sam altman. coming as a shock to those in the industry with workers now threatening to follow him out of the company to join microsoft, hundreds wrote in an open letter calling for openai's board to resign. negative effects on openai could affect startups relying on that technology and allow the startups, of course, are in san francisco. >> there's been talk about how ai in general and the investment that was going into it, the billions and billions of dollars of investment was really priming san francisco to possibly have an upswing. >> robert salmons, a senior research director with cushman wakefield, says he is still optimistic. >> hopefully this is just a hiccup. i think because it is such a focus in san francisco with the ai workers, ai employees, that that will continue to be the case and certainly will still be the

center of that revolution. >> in the meantime, all eyes are on microsoft to see what altman could create with them. >> today is transgender day of remembrance, a day to acknowledge those who have been murdered by transphobic violence. san francisco city hall is paying tribute to lighting up the colors of the trans flag tonight. this marks the end of transgender awareness week, bringing attention to trans owns people and the issues they face. the coalition, a coalition of trans organizations , held a rally on the steps tonight. it ended with a march to the lgbt center where they held more community programing. it is a killing that will send a chill down your spine. >> the man found guilty of beheading his ex girlfriend is now waiting to learn his fate. plus, it's the lush enclave of thought to be perfect for presidential meeting. but tonight, we're giving you a locals perspective on the beauty inside the bay area's filoli estate. >> plus, i think some of the earliest plaques go back to about the 1920s. some reason for

all of this has seemed like a waste of time. i want to feel better. i just don't know if i can. >> a father trying to put his pain into words tonight, a verdict reached in the case of his daughter's killer. and tonight, abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is following what comes next in the san carlos beheading of karina castro. >> on monday, a san mateo county jury found rafa solano guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend, karina castro. her father said he's relieved with the conviction, but not as much as he'd like to be. >> well, i'm glad he's going to be in prison for as long as humanly possible. my daughter is still gone. >> officials say last year in september, solano used a samurai sword and slashed repeatedly at castro, killing her. it was in broad daylight in the middle of a street in san carlos.

>> this is a case that happened in front of four eyewitnesses. it was done in a very vicious manner. >> robert cummings is solano's defense attorney. he said solano was positive he would walk out of the courtroom a free man. >> he doesn't have delusions or whatever, but he was pretty sure he was going to walk out the front door. i was not as optimistic myself. >> in a jailhouse interview earlier this year. solano told abc7 news i-team reporter dan noyes that he killed castro in self-defense, claiming castro threatened him over social media. cummings said what happened in this case was a psychotic break. he said solano was schizophrenic and it was his client's paranoid thoughts that drove his actions. i think california needs to change the way it treats its paranoid schizophrenic who have proven that they've had issues. solano faces 26 years to life in prison . the victim's family thanked the prosecutor for his team and the detectives on this case. marty castro said karina was his

notice redwood city, two degrees shy of its old record, coming in at 71in san jose, a few degrees away from the record of 76 degrees. let's talk about what's ahead for your holiday week. we are talking about a chilly night ahead despite the fact that the high clouds will be increasing overnight, warmer tomorrow near record high temperatures and it's going to be mild weather for your thanksgiving. so really something to be thankful for. here is a live view from our exploratorium camera looking at san francisco and it looks just lovely as we look towards salesforce tower as will be your thanksgiving day forecast. a cool start at 8 a.m, 40s for your temperatures. light and breezy at noontime. temperatures in the low to mid 60s and it is going to be nice and mild at 3 p.m. mid 60s to low 70. once the sun sets the temperatures will drop off pretty quickly down to the 50s and 60s. high pressure in control of our weather and that's why it's diverting the storm track to our north. we are

expecting a little system, a weak system coming our way later on this week. we'll talk about that in just a moment live. doppler seven showing you the clouds off the coast. they'll be coming through here later on tonight, going into tomorrow. temperatures are dropping in the 40s and 50s. you can feel that chill in the air. and as we head toward tomorrow morning, you will certainly notice that it is going to be a chilly start to the day later on in the afternoon, really warming up nicely. so we'll see some 60s and 70s. i'll show you where those highs will end up tomorrow morning. make sure you bundle up despite the high cloud cover, most of you will be in the 30s and 40s. san francisco down to 50 degrees tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at a mix of sun and high clouds. temperatures in the warmest spots will be in the 70s the rest of you in the 60s with filtered sunshine. so here's the system that we're watching on wednesday. it will bring some showers to northern california. it falls apart late wednesday night into early thanksgiving as it comes through our area. but regardless, we're going to see a few extra clouds.
