car, charred metal and smoke rising into the air. sources tell abc news that investigators discovered a suitcase or briefcase on scene. the bomb squad handling the package. sources also saying the vehicle was seen on surveillance footage, stopped at an initial security checkpoint before speeding up and crashing into the second checkpoint. it's unclear what caused the explosion. >> this is an evolved situation. information is coming into canadian authorities from their american counterparts. it's literally minute by minute authorities shutting down the bridge along with others in the area. >> we will continue to be engaged. >> we will provide updates and updates. i can give right now is there are four border crossings that are right now closed. >> local law enforcement also placing k-9 officers on each of the international bridges, cars being searched at buffalo airport. out of an abundance of caution, we anna roy, abc news, new york. >> now this is video from us customs and border protection. i want you to look up here in the

background and because what you'll see is the car, it almost looks like it hits a concrete barrier. there and that's what launches it up. airborne before it crashed and exploded right now, officials do not believe that this was related to terrorism in any way. we spoke with local officials who say there's no increased security due to this incident at any bay area airports or roadways. >> scenes like this have people concerned as they get ready to go and shop this holiday season. california is fighting back against organized retail crime and they're ramping things up ahead of black friday. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live in the newsroom with details suzanne. >> j.r, this holiday season, visitors can count on seeing security, a lot of it around key shopping areas like union square in san francisco. the sights and sounds of union square are a big hit with the johnson family from southern california. it's very kid friendly. >> my kids were really excited about the christmas tree at and toys r us being back at macy's.

that's a big thing. they've never been to toys r us. >> this year, visitors at union square can expect to see even more security. >> see, that was one of the few things i noticed when i was driving around looking for parking is i saw a security person at least two on every corner. >> two years ago, a large group targeted louis vuitton and took off with thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise. today, san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins, joined the chp commissioner to share their plan to combat organized retail theft during the holiday season. the san francisco police department and all of our law enforcement partners include the chp, our sheriff's department and others will be out in full force to catch those who engage in retail theft in our stores during this holiday season. >> and that i as the district attorney of san francisco and committed to accountability. >> the chp commissioner says $260 million in grants from governor gavin newsom's administration has been a big help this is a game changer for law enforcement and our efforts

to combat retail theft. he says businesses and shoppers should expect to see more law enforcement patrolling key shopping districts to the criminals. the chp offers this message the deck is stacked against you. >> law enforcement is organized and proactively taking steps to identify, arrest and hold you accountable. >> jenkins says the $2 million her office received will partly go toward hiring a special investigator later and appointing an attorney to focus on catching and prosecuting criminals. soquel's and $15 million to the san francisco police department will help them. staff officers and also invest in technology to catch thieves in the city's business corridors. this former bay area resident appreciates it. he's here from atlanta visiting for the holidays and checking out union square. >> there's a bunch of officers. there's a lot of security. every boutique, every shop that i've walked into has security in front of it. and it seems very, very safe. >> sfpd and the da's office recently announced the safe shopper initiative. da jenkins says uniformed and undercover

officers will be in our stores to ensure the safety of shoppers . the chp, organized retail crime task force continues to crack down on criminals. this year alone, it arrested 800 people statewide and recovered about $5 million in stolen goods. live in the newsroom, suzanne phon, abc seven news. suzanne thank you so much. >> dozens took part in a rally today calling for a delay in a 90 day ban on street vending in san francisco's mission district. members of the newly formed mission street vendors association say the ban, set to start on monday, will have a devastating impact on their livelihood, particularly during the holiday season. the group, made up of 116 vendors with city issued permits, wants the ban delayed until after the new year . >> if i walked into this coffee shop that's been there 30 years and i told them, hey, i've got to close the street because crime's a little bad here. we're going to move you over here, though. don't worry about it. would they take that or would

she do that to that business? absolutely not. you can do it to people who you think you can push around. >> and supervisor hillary ronen implemented the 90 day ban in conjunct with the city attorney's office to address health and safety issues and following attacks on public works employees by unpermitted vendors. >> happening now, the holiday travel rush just beginning ahead of a long thanksgiving holiday weekend. let's take a live look at what traffic is doing right now. and it's pretty slow on interstate 80. this is an emeryville. you know, the shopping center is off to the right hand side. eastbound lanes backed up. coming back towards the city is also pretty slow going. how about in walnut creek? what do we have here on 680? well one side good, one side challenging. and let's take a look at 101 in san jose and that is what we often get at this hour in the south bay abc seven news reporter ryan curry got some travel tips from some of the experts everywhere. >> i mean, we know that this is one of the biggest travel days of the year. so it's going to be

busy everywhere. >> the ones day before thanksgiving is usually one of the busiest for travelers driving triple a estimates that 55 million people will drive to and from their thanksgiving destinations. there has been an appetite for traveling people want to get back to tradition for the holiday weekend. >> they want to see family. they want to see friends. >> hence the reason why travel experts are projecting a record year for travel. if you want to beat the traffic, timing is key. >> people leave in the early afternoon hours. we really recommend people get up early, get out the door before 11:00 in the morning. the early bird avoids the traffic, so to speak. >> chp wants people to always remember if you are driving, make sure you're sober. >> anything that you consume that impairs your ability to drive, you know, please plan ahead. have a designated driver. don't run the risk. i promise you the uber, the lyft, the limo, the taxi, it doesn't matter. it's going to be less expensive than getting a dui. not to mention the danger that you're putting other people in in lafayette. >> ryan curry, abc seven news.

lines wrapped outside the store in san jose and it's not exactly a fast moving line. how long have you been waiting in line? >> oh, an hour. and still with a ways to go based on those we caught coming out of the store with the prize and go, sir, there it is. >> love it. >> and how long do you wait for that? oh, about an hour and a half time spent an hour and a half money spent around $90 for a part of the meal. >> oh, that's. that's not even the tip of the iceberg. it's going to be a couple hundred. >> i know. we haven't got everything. and i've already spent about $500 and we don't have everything yet. so probably with desserts and everything close to a thousand, maybe an america farm bureau federation survey found a 12 item thanksgiving meal for ten will cost about $61 a person on average. >> but the good news is that's a 4.5% drop from last year. turkey driving the dip with a 5.6% drop in cost. san jose state professor of economics matthew holian says people can be thankful for falling inflation and interest rates. >> interest rates have been really high for the for the last

want to be able to do is help seniors live independently with dignity in their homes for as long as safely possible. >> while we work with a variety of different people, and some of them have health issues and as drivers, we, you know, keep an eye, see if there's any changes when we go deliver to joan, you know, joan is not looking so well. >> you know, we might, you know, send that message back to our social work department who might give joan a call afterwards. you get to find out little bits about the person that you're working with and they remember your name and yeah, there is. >> sometimes i fill in and the clients were all ask, where is my regular driver? and they know they know them by name and are they okay? are they sick or so you see that there's a lot of love in the work that we do. who pays for all of this? >> all this generous city? >> you know, it is a 5050 mix. so 50, you know, certainly contracts through the city. and

then also, you know, the public and private as well. thanksgiving is coming up. >> is that a special occasion for you guys? >> oh, it is. it is. we this year we are preparing 6900 meals that go throughout. not only san francisco, but northern san mateo county, a number of those meals will also go to our navigation centers that we serve , as well as sros, holidays can be a really lonely time for people, so being able to deliver these meals out, they're all going to come with a handmade card that our volunteers made just to kind of brighten the day. and it's just it's really magical. >> what are you grateful for? >> i'm grateful for living here in a city that cares about people. >> the 2023 edition of the westin saint francis is annual holiday. sugar castle is now on

50 this year. you're dating us. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard sat down with the marin county man whose voice brought charlie brown to life all those years ago. charlie brown now charlie brown. >> it's been a half century since lucy. >> first taunted charlie brown with the football on thanksgiving. but like most kids, charlie grew up. >> i'm todd barbee and i voiced charlie brown on the thanks giving special. >> todd barbee from san anselmo is remembering a charlie brown thanksgiving which made its tv debut in 1973. todd was just 11 when he gave voice to the iconic peanuts character in a san francisco recording studio south of market. >> occasionally, bill melendez,

we try really hard to catch people doing, you know, these these car break ins. it's the scourge of the city. >> well, he's right about that. and the i-team has obtained these exclusive crime scene photos showing the aftermath of a wild ride through san francisco's north beach. >> the case from april of 2022 involves the same person who is now the first suspect arrested under sfpd's new bait car campaign and dan noyes is back with an i-team investigation, an update. >> this is one of these things that just cannot not slow down. maybe they are slowing it down now. >> it's still up in the air, right? well, larry and jay are the first man arrested under the

latest bait car campaign, has a long criminal record, including that crazy night in 2022. when i first told you the story last month, some viewers asked me for more information how this defendant was able to get back on the streets so quickly after such a serious accident at is the first look at a crime scene that spans several blocks in san francisco's north beach. it didn't receive much media coverage after 930 on a tuesday night in april 2022. police spotted a stolen suv used in multiple car break ins that day. >> the police sort of trapped him. this is a one way street. he they trapped him down there. >> police had the suspect, 24 year old robert sanza, in a dead end on union street, past montgomery. but he rammed the suv into a patrol car and sped away. he took out this garage on alta street, sideswiped cars and returned to the intersection where officer riley bandy had just pulled up, getting out of

his patrol car. >> he just headed right straight for my car and tried to run me over. so i had to jump in back into my car to avoid getting killed. he was aiming for you? yeah. >> your body. >> oh, yeah. because i jumped back in and he slammed right into my car. you know, if i had waited a second more, i'd have been dead, so. and then he did it again. i tried to get out of the car. same thing. he backed up, did it again, bandy left by ambulance and says he still feels the effects of the back injury he suffered that night. >> neck santa drove onto the sidewalk, hit this staircase, took out a vespa, made it to columbus and broadway, where he slammed into a civilian's car, injuring him. sanza ran from that scene. officers finally catching him a few blocks away in chinatown. >> he victimized a lot of people that day. wasn't just me. >> at first, prosecutors charged sanza with several counts of assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon hit and run, evading an officer with willful disregard, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor possession of burglar tools in a

plea deal. all the charges got dismissed except a single count of evading an officer. so i was really surprised to know that they that they really dropped, you know, almost everything. that court proceeding also included an incident from february second of last year. police responded to the japantown garage for a report of an auto burglary officer, tried to detain sanza as the suspect, but he fled, got in his car, ran over an officer's foot and hit a parked car. that case brought nine more charges, including assault upon a peace officer burglar of a vehicle, hit and run and resisting arrest. i wanted to find out why all those charges were dropped except for a single evading in two incidents that injured officers and a civilian and did all that damage to homes and cars. >> i certainly don't want to see any officer injured while doing their job. >> and district attorney brooke jenkins discussed the case with me. but through their offices, the public defender, sylvia, when the prosecutor on the case,

farah zaharia, and the judge, linda colfax, declined my requests for an interview, the hearing transcripts show that the probation department did not agree with their plea deal that would let robert sanza avoid prison time by participating in a residential program. quote probation instead recommended that he be sentenced to serve his time in prison. still, sanza got out with time served a little over six months in jail. how did that happen? >> so was that a good outcome, do you think so? i have looked up at that case briefly. i was left with concern about that plea. it is not something that on its face, i believe i would have done this case began under former prosecutor chesa boudin before his recall, but a wrapped up in the early months of brooke jenkins administration. >> there was a culture that had been established here by the prior administration, a very lenient plea offers, and it takes time to sort of correct

course to have lawyers understand the true value of a case, the true public safety risk that certain people pose. robert sanza got arrested again september 1st. he's accused of breaking into a bait car, taking burberry bags, belonging to san francisco police department on the same day. he's also charged with breaking into two rental cars include this one with out-of-state plates at this parking lot along the embarcadero linda. and dan alleges lost cash, a $1,200 ipad and a $3,500 laptop app. does it mean anything at all that the police were able to catch your guy with their bait car? it worked. i mean, they're they're law enforcement technique worked. >> it does. but then, you know, let's see what happens to this guy because, you know, it wasn't his first rodeo. you know, it's a profession job. what are they going to do, slap them on the wrist and let them out in a couple months? >> and one other twist in this case, the court asked officer

>> this is something that was developed after the summer of the murder of george floyd. and you know, with all of the social justice talk and that was going on during that summer, i felt like when people went back to work and covid was over, we kind of stopped talking about these issues. and i wanted to do something that would continue the conversation. so it came up with rebranding our tournament to the raising the bar invitational and, you know, obviously we want high level basketball. we believe in the activism piece, and that represents is due to the fact that while for over 45% of the student athletes in our game are women of color, only around 15 to 17% of the head coaches are people of color. so are women of color. so really wanted that to be something where we can have that conversation and bring awareness to that. well, let's follow up on that because you've got four teams in the tournament which starts friday. >> you've got obviously cal san jose state, texas a&m and winthrop. and these programs have one specific thing in common. that's for sure.
