approached the crossing. >> it then struck a booth. there was an explosion and the vehicle launched into the air before it crashed. two people inside the car died and an agent working in one of the booths was injured. investigators found some sort of suitcase briefcase at the scene, but could be facing a real challenge in piecing together exactly what happened. >> the car is destroyed and pieces of it are scattered all over the scene. new york's governor did provide this update on the investigation. >> there is no sign of terrorist activity with respect to this crash. we have identified that this is a local individual, a western new yorker. >> all the bridge crossings in the area were shut down as a precaution. cars were being searched at buffalo international airport as well. >> that investigation impacting several canadian border crossings. closures comes as millions of people are navigating airports ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. the number of flight delays has been climbing throughout the day as heavy winds and rain sweep

through the northeast, as well as snow in new england. and now a new storm is expected to bring more snow to states like montana, wyoming and idaho, where winter alerts could translate into delays for west coast travelers. >> i was looking at the weather and i was kind of worried. the weather always is the key. >> and then there's air traffic control shortages. but the weather will be the key. we've been working with the faa to adjust routes, to move things around. >> as for the trip home, the tsa estimates nearly 3 million people could pass through security lines on sunday, which would be the highest number ever recorded in the agency's 20 year history. >> and here's a live look at sfo right now. it's been busy there all day. for more on that holiday travel forecast, we want to go to abc7 news meteorologist sandyha patel. sandy. yeah. dan and as we take a look at the national picture here, it is pretty quiet although we do have some some snow showers over the rockies and across parts of new england. >> they are getting a pretty

steady snowfall right now. showers are moving off the coast off the east coast there. so it should be quieter weather if you are traveling tomorrow. here's a look at the weather. 51 in new york. some of the problem spots will be across the rockies where winter weather is going to come through that region and continue. so thanksgiving is looking white, 43 in salt lake city, 40 degrees in denver, 51 in portland. as we take a look at the statewide weather, it is all quiet other than a few snow showers in the sierra nevada, tahoe, 43 degrees down south, partly cloudy, 71 in los angeles, mild weather is expected. i'll be back to let you know how thanksgiving is shaping up here locally. coming right up. >> dan? all right, sandhya, thank you. big rig crash has brought thanksgiving travel to a standstill along interstate five near the grapevine. the chp says the truck was carrying 51ft metal poles when it lost the load on its on the road, spilling the poles across every lane of the freeway heading northbound. our abc's sister

station in fresno tells us the backup. take a look at this now stretches for as long as 30 miles. video shows two lanes are open at this point, but traffic obviously moving very slowly. the crash happened just after 11:00 this morning. crews are still on the scene working to clean up the debris and what about the conditions for people here in the bay area? >> well, here is a live look at those conditions on i-80 and emeryville right now who be thankful you're at home if you're watching from your your home or your couch. triple a has warned that right now between 2 and 6 is the worst time to be driving today. >> and in the south bay. here's what it looks like right now on highway 101 in san jose. san jose near 8-80. as you can see, pretty slow there as well. that ribbon of tail lights that are heading against. you hear those tail lights are heading east just so you know. and it is obviously pretty slow in both directions. >> and check out the conditions along interstate 680. in walnut creek, the lanes closest to us

are traveling eastbound towards pleasant hill and concord. >> all right. let's move on. in oakland restaurant owner matt horne fulfilled his commitment to the community, handing out free meals before thanksgiving. his generous donation comes just one day after his restaurant was redtagged because of an early morning fire. abc seven news reporter anser hassan. and tonight on kindness in the midst of adversity. matt horne admits it was tough to come to work today. >> the day after his restaurant was burned and his kitchen destroyed. >> had it not have been for today's giving, it would have been tough for me to leave the house. to be completely honest with you. >> but horne, the owner of the michelin rated horne barbecue in west oakland, says he made a commitment, a turkey give away for thanksgiving. we've committed to coming out and serving the community. >> this is something that we do. and despite any challenges or adversity, we may face, i got to continue to move forward and stay committed to that. >> and many in the community lined up counting on that commitment. >> it's been hard since the covid and everything and

struggling and working. we're living paycheck to paycheck. it's good to know that you have somebody that's there for you. >> usually the turkeys would be distributed inside and there would be warm meals to give away. but the fire damage made that difficult to do. on monday. horne called out vandals who tagged his restaurant in an instagram post on tuesday. the restaurant caught fire. he suspects he was targeted. >> we need more community businesses that really care and give back. >> oakland fire chief damon covington says there's no update on the fire investigation on he and his crew came out to support horne's turkey giveaway. even celebrity chef tyler florence was on hand. >> so it means everything to us that horne would continue to operate and care about our community, even through this disaster. i didn't think that he was going to be able to pull it off and he actually pulled it off. >> he's really been an asset to the community. horne says the fire has given him a new perspective of this holiday, but no change to his commitment to his community.

with the prize and go, sir, there it is. >> i love it. and how long do you wait for that? >> about an hour and a half time. >> spent an hour and a half money spent around $90 for a part of the meal. >> oh, that's. that's not even the tip of the iceberg. it's going to be a couple hundred. >> i know. we haven't got everything. and we've already spent about $500 and we don't have everything yet. so probably with desserts and everything close to a thousand, maybe an american farm bureau federation survey found a 12 item thanksgiving meal for ten will cost about $61. >> a person on average. but the good news is that's a 4.5% drop from last year. turkey driving the dip with a 5.6% drop in cost. san jose state professor of economics matthew holian says people can be thankful for falling inflation and interest rates. >> interest rates have been really high for the for the last couple of years and so that has been painful for people who are trying to buy homes and things like that. however, it has taken pressure off of prices. >> holian says people tend to

not worry about spending big on food during the holidays. since it's an important time with family. so whether it's money spent or time spent, people say it's worth it. >> thanksgiving celebration is one of the most important celebrations here in the us. that's why we need to have, you know, the heart could feel within this honeybee. you know, it goes with the meaning and the love that we share to each other in san jose, dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> okay. >> in san francisco, the ban on street vending along mission street is approaching. street vendors will be asked to move or sell indoors. if not, their stuff could get confiscated. abc seven news reporter luz pena has been covering this for months. she's in the newsroom. lose vendors are now asking for the ban to be postponed and no that's right they just wanted completely out at least until after the holidays. >> and that's what they're asking. they're asking supervisor ronen to delay the street ban until after christmas . s if nothing changes starting monday, public works inspectors and sfpd officers will begin the

enforcement at over 100 san francisco mission. street vendors are fighting back just days before they're prohibited from selling on this street. >> say they have permits. they have the ability to be here. you're not going to shuffle the board simply because you think that's how you're going to solve the problem. >> vendors say the 90 day ban from supervisor ronen is unfair. last week they created the mission street vendors association, bringing together a group of 116 vendors seeking to delay the ban. it says mi familia depende de mi trabajo. my family depends on my job. they preocupa tu familia. you're worried about them. >> porque i'm worried about my family. >> tito, luis and luis ledesma are family. street vending has been their only source of income for the last decade. they got their first permit in 2015 when they don't understand why their livelihood should be impacted because the city is overwhelmed

by those selling stolen items and attacking inspectors. i don't know what to do. is part of a strategy to regain control of the sidewalks. >> what happened is that it was really overwhelmed our resources and frankly, the number of vendors that are operating on the street is impossible for us to regulate right now. >> santiago lerma is supervisor ronin's aide. he showed us one of the three locations they're planning to open for vendors on monday. >> we're spending in total about $500,000 in rent and construction for the three sites. >> many of you selling indoors as a setback, especially during the holidays, when their businesses make the most money. sofia lopez is part of the association and said she has been following the rules for over a decade and is concerned the ban will be extended past the 90 days. >> vamos para el otro yo esperamos dia. >> what are we supposed to

after being fired. yeah. it comes as a new study highlights the benefits that founding ceos have on companies. abc7 news reporter zac fuentes has been tracking the story and has more. it's been a tumultuous few days at openai, the company behind chatgpt saw its board fire ceo sam altman. >> on friday, microsoft openai's biggest investor, almost immediately hired altman for their own ai project. but in an open letter, more than 700 employees said they joined him there. if the board did not rehire him. late tuesday, it was announced altman was back and many board members were out. while it's still not entirely clear what led to altman's firing, ai, industry analysts say what is clear is the influence he has. >> we witnessed that. sam altman pretty much led his team and basically announcing that that they would only stay until sam altman was reinstated. >> and he is as a founding ceo. altman staying with the company might in fact be the best thing for it. >> he's the face of ai, not just

for openai, but for the ai revolution. so he has high amounts of prestige, power and expert power. >> priya cannon is the dean at the lucas college of graduate school of business at csu. she's a coauthor. in a study published in the journal of business research that looked into the influence of founders, ceos researching what happens to an organization when they leave, conducted over the course of several years, it came up with some key findings. >> one of this is that keeping founders ceo at the helm is critical for an organization's innovation performance in the long run. we also find that non-founding ceos who are also called as agent ceos cannot compete easily with the founders still there. >> research also found that a founder ceo can also increase the perceptions of company risk in light of the now averted employee walkout at openai. its board may now be especially nervous to ever oust altman again, regardless of the reason. >> and it's very difficult to let them go. right? there's research that suggests managerial entrenchment is a huge cost to companies in terms of its long term performance. >> cannon says she hopes the study is looked at by companies to think about long term

in celebration will serve thousands of the city's most vulnerable. thursday. yeah. tonight, volunteers at glide are busy preparing meals. >> and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, there expecting pre-pandemic numbers of people the pies are being prepped and thanksgiving meals set as glide prepares for one of its biggest days of the year. >> it is like our super bowl, our met gala, our oscars all in one. >> and this year there expecting to make a full comeback from the

pandemic for the first time since the pandemic. >> we're inviting all of our guests back inside. >> and that means there are thousands of meals to be made. we usually anticipate serving about 2400 meals generally between breakfast and then the big thanksgiving dinner. and volunteers like patrick chung are helping to make it happen. >> i like to volunteer to give back to the community. you know, there's a lot of people out there that are less fortunate. and it's important that we kind of show our commitment to taking care of those people in need. this is patrick's fifth year of volunteering at glide and he says he's noticed more and more people helping out covid really did a number in terms of having people realize that the world is tough. so you see a lot of a bigger population of people in the community come out and volunteer for glide. >> we have about 100 volunteers making their way from all over the bay area. some folks even fly home to be part of the glide celebration and part of the celebration is making sure those hardest to reach still get a meal. >> volunteers preparing hundreds of sandwiches to be handed out

and warmer for a really nice looking weather. gusty winds in the hills tomorrow afternoon going into friday morning. and colder nights and cooler days are expected this weekend with some frost forming. so be ready for that as we look at a live picture from our pier 39 camera, you can see how lovely it is here in san francisco with visitors checking out the view. i mean, what a nice way to start off the holidays. let's take a look at the thanksgiving forecast, 8 a.m, crisp and cool temperatures in the 40s. it's going to be mainly sunny skies, bright and breezy at noontime. temperatures in the 60s, sunny and warm are 3 p.m. we're talking about low 70s around parts of the bay and inland, mid 60s coast side and then it's going to be clear later on at night. but it is going to get windy in our hills and in solano county. temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. let's look at what's happening. a dry, cold front for the bay area coming through. so to the north, they are seeing a few showers.

but for us, it's really just the cloud cover that we're seeing. and behind that system, the winds are going to ramp up. a wind advisory goes up at 10 a.m. tomorrow, runs until 1 p.m. friday for solano county. northerly winds will be gusting to 45 miles an hour. and that's strong enough to take down some tree limbs or blow around your holiday decorations. so make sure you secure them a few power outages are not out of the question. let's go hour by hour and i'll show you what's going to happen. that front will continue to bring a few showers to the north. some snow showers in the sierra mixing in with some rain showers in the tahoe area. and it's really tonight that the snow levels above pass levels. but tomorrow morning, 6500 to 7000ft, just be prepared . might be a brief shower as you go through and then behind that, the wind comes up. winds will be gusting out of the north. tomorrow afternoon at 3:00. you're seeing 32 miles an hour in fairfield and 11 p.m. over 40 mile an hour winds in calistoga, 36 in half moon bay. so it'll be
