crossing in niagara falls. surveillance video captured the car speeding, hitting something and then launching into the air. it crashed and exploded, sending debris, as you can see, just everywhere. this led to the rainbow international bridge being shut down for the rest of the day. three other bridges in the area were briefly closed out of precaution. one man saw the whole thing. listen. >> he hit the concrete barrier, probably right at the signal. god knows how many thousands of feet before the bridge. it went airborne. as the vehicle began to turn sideways and went under something overhead. and then it hit something over there. then all of a sudden, i saw black smoke and then fire new york's governor says this was not terrorism and that the driver and a passenger died in the wreck. >> investigators do know the identity of at least one of the victims, six. he was heightened at buffalo's airport and all international flights were halted. this is a live look at

san francisco international airport. we checked with all three major airports in the bay area and they did not see any impact from what happened in buffalo. that is certainly good news there. >> well, the holiday season is here, which means the shopping season is here. cities across california are waging a big fight now against organized retail crime. in san francisco. that means investing in shoppers safety. abc7 news reporter suzanne phan is in the newsroom with more on this tonight. suzanne >> so, dan, this holiday season, visitors can count on seeing security a lot of it around key shopping areas and areas like union square in san francisco. so the sights and sounds of union square are a big hit with the johnson family from southern california. >> it's very kid friendly. my kids were really excited about the christmas tree and toys r us being back at macy's. that's a big thing. they've never been to toys r us this year, visitors at union square can expect to see even more security that was one of the few things i noticed when

i was driving around looking for parking is i saw a security person at least two on every corner. >> two years ago, a large group targeted louis vuitton and took off with thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise. today, san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins, joined the chp commissioner to share their plan to combat organized retail theft during the holiday season. >> the san francisco police department and all of our law enforcement partners, including the chp, our sheriff's department and others, will be out in full force to catch those who engage in retail theft in our stores during this holiday season. and that i, as the district attorney of san francisco, am committed to accountable city. >> the chp commissioner says $260 million in grants from governor gavin newsom's administration has been a big help. >> this is a game changer for law enforcement and our efforts to combat retail theft, he says businesses and shoppers should expect to see more law enforcement patrolling key shopping districts, too. >> the criminals. the chp offers this message the deck is stacked

against you. >> law enforcement is organized and proactively taking steps to identify, arrest and hold you accountable. >> jenkins says the $2 million her office received will partly go toward hiring a special investigator and appointing an attorney to focus on catching and prosecuting criminals. and $15 million to the san francisco police department will help them. staff officers and also invest in technology to catch thieves in the city's business corridors. this former bay area resident appreciates it. he's here from atlanta, visiting for the holidays and checking out union square. >> there's a bunch of officers. there's a lot of security. every boutique, every shop that i've walked into has security in front of it. and it seems very, very safe. >> and sfpd and the da's office recently announced the safe shopper initiative. da jenkins says uniformed and undercover officers will be in our stores to ensure the safety of shoppers. now, the chp organized retail crime task force continues to crack down on criminals. this year alone, it

west oakland, says he made a commitment, a turkey giveaway for thanksgiving. >> we've committed to coming out and serving the community. we this is something that we do. and despite any challenges or adversity we may face, i got to continue to move forward and stay committed to that. >> and many in the community lined up counting on that commitment. it's been hard since the covid and everything and struggling and working with living paycheck to paycheck. >> it's good to know that you have somebody that's there for you. >> usually the turkeys would be distributed inside and there would be warm meals to give away. but the fire damage made that difficult to do on monday. horn called out vandals who tagged his restaurant in an instagram post tuesday. the restaurant caught fire. he suspects he was targeted. >> we need more, more community businesses that really care and give back. >> oakland fire chief damon covington says there is no update on the fire investigation mission. he and his crew came out to support horns turkey giveaway. even celebrity chef tyler florence was on hand. >> so it means everything to us

that horn would continue to operate and care about our community, even through this disaster. i didn't think that he was going to be able to pull it off. >> and he actually pulled it off. he's really been an asset to the community. >> horn says the fire has given him a new perspective this holiday, but no change to his commitment to his community. >> we're committed to oakland and we're committed to being here in the community and you know, this this temporary situation doesn't distract from what our true purpose is in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> happening now, the chp is beginning its maximum enforcement period for the holiday. >> all available officers are on patrol checking for drunk drivers, distracted drivers, speeding drivers and more. the maximum enforcement period ends on sunday night. >> thanksgiving travel has been snarled today along northbound interstate five near the grapevine. chp says a big rig crash this morning spilling 15 foot metal poles all over the

freeway. our abc sister station in fresno tells us the backup stretches as long as 30 miles. what a mess. wow. what a mess is, right? that's the traffic. but how does the weather stack up? >> that's a key question. abc7 news meteorologist sandyha patel is here with your thanksgiving forecast. sandy. >> yes, we have something to be thankful for. dan and j.r. the weather looks fantastic here locally. let's take a look at a live picture from our san jose camera and it is a beautiful view of the shark tank in the south bay. let's look at live doppler seven. there is a dry, cold front that is passing through tonight right into tomorrow morning. and as it does, we'll continue to see more clouds, but a few sprinkles up in northern california. here's a look at your temperature was there in the 50s and 60s in the comfort zone right now as we go hour by hour tonight, if you are stepping out to do some last minute shopping for preparation of your meal tomorrow, temperatures in the 50s at 9 p.m, you'll need a light jacket tomorrow morning. it's going to start out in the 40s and 50s for many of you at seven, 8:00 in

the morning. and then by noontime, it's mild. even warmer as we head into the afternoon with some low 70s. so here's your thanksgiving forecast. the winds will be picking up in the hills and solano county tomorrow morning. 40s for your numbers at 8 a.m, bright and breezy for the noontime hour. and then we're looking at gusty winds, gusty winds in the hills, but certainly a warmer afternoon with plenty of blue skies. and then in the evening it will cool off. i'll be back to let you know how the rest of the holiday week is shaping up. coming right up j.r. >> sandhya thank you so much in san francisco. the ban on street vending along mission street is approaching street vendors will be asked to move or sell indoors if not their items could get confiscated. abc7 news reporter luz pena has been covering this for months and lose. vendors are now asking for the ban to be postponed. >> yes. yes. j.r. a group of mission street vendors are urging supervisor voting to delay the street ban until after the holidays if nothing changes. starting monday, the enforcement begins over 100 san francisco

mission street vendors are fighting back. just days before they're prohibited from selling on this street. >> say they have permits. they have the ability to be here. >> you're not going to shuffle the board simply because you think that's how you're going to solve the problem. >> vendors say the 90 day ban from supervisor ronen is unfair. last week they created the mission street vendors association, bringing together a group of 169 vendors seeking to delay the ban. it says mi familia de mi trabajo. my family depends on my job. they preocupa tu familia. you're worried about them familia porque i'm worried about my family. tito, luis and luis ledesma are family. street vending has been their only source of income for the last decade. they got their first permit in 2015. they don't understand why their livelihood should be impacted because the city is overwhelmed by those selling stolen items and

attacking inspectors. i don't know what to do. this ban part of a strategy to regain control of the sidewalks. >> what happened is that it was really overwhelm our resources. and frankly, the number of vendors that are operating on the street is impossible for us to regulate. right now. >> santiago lerma is supervisor ronan's aide. he showed us one of the three locations they're planning to open for vendors on monday. >> we're spending in total about $500,000 in rent and construction for the three sites, as many of you selling indoors as a setback, especially during the holiday when their businesses make the most money. >> sofia lopez is part of the association and said she has been following the rules for over a decade and is concerned the ban will be extended past the 90 days. >> esperamos para el otro yo esperamos dia. >> what are we supposed to expect from her for next year?

cisco based openai has his job back after being fired. it comes as a new study highlights the benefits that founding ceos have on their companies. abc7 news reporter zach fuentes explains why it's been a tumultuous few days at openai. >> the company behind chatgpt saw its board fire ceo sam altman on friday. microsoft openai's biggest investor almost immediately hired altman for their own ai project. but in an open letter, more than 700 employees said they joined him.

there if the board did not rehire him. late tuesday, it was announced altman was back and many board members were out. while it's still not entirely clear what led to altman's firing, i industry analysts say what is clear is the influence he has. >> we witnessed that. sam altman pretty much led his team and basically announcing that that they would only stay until sam altman was reinstated and said he is as a founding ceo. >> altman staying with the company might in fact be the best thing for it. >> he's the face of ai, not just for openai, but for the ai revolution. so he has high amounts of prestige, power and expert power. >> priya cannon is the dean at the lucas college of graduate school of business at sdsu. she's a coauthor in a study published in the journal of business research that looked into the influence of founder ceos researching what happens to an organization when they leave. conducted over the course of several years, it came up with some key findings. >> one of this is that keeping founders ceos at the helm is critical for an organization's innovation performance in the long run. we also find that

non-founding ceos who are also called as agent ceos cannot compete easily with the founders still there. >> research also found that a founder ceo can also increase the perceptions of company risk in light of the now averted employee walkout at openai. its board may now be especially nervous to ever oust altman again, regardless of the reason. and it's very difficult to let them go. >> there's research that suggests managerial entrenchment is a huge cost to companies in terms of its long term performance. >> cannon says she hopes the study is looked at by companies to think about long term succession planning. for now, analysts are eager to see how openai rebuilds its board and moves forward with altman's return. >> exciting to see this to see or the new products being rolled out by openai i and the south bay. >> zach fuentes, abc7 news. >> well, it is all about the weather right now. so far so good this week to get your items, but you've got to actually get to where you're going. >> well that is true. that's the key to enjoying the thanksgiving meal. but so far so great actually. meteorologist sandyha patel is here. hi, sandy. hi

there. >> yeah. and dan and j.r, we're going to keep it going. uh, since you both like it so much. good evening to all of you. let me show you some live views from our tower cameras. this is a pretty good indication of what you can expect. all is calm for the time being and the views are just priceless. there are some high clouds passing through right now, and that's going to continue through the night. but by tomorrow, things are going to look different. so let's talk about your thanksgiving forecast. crisp and cool at 8 a.m. temperatures in the 40s at noontime. as you're enjoying your meal. hopefully with family and friends, you will notice that the skies are bright outside. it is going to get milder temperatures in the 60s, but certainly the breezes will be picking up. and as we go into the afternoon, it'll be a warmer holiday day with gusty winds in the hills mid 60s to the low 70s. so nice looking weather as we check out a live view from our walnut creek camera, you can see what it looks like right now. obviously, they have some traffic for the holidays. here's a look at the national picture and you will notice that all is pretty quiet other than a few showers and snow showers. so

right across the new england area, they're still dealing with some wintry mix at this hour. so far, though, haven't had any major problems. tomorrow may be different as you look around the rockies where heavy snow is expected and winter warnings are in effect there. salt lake city, 43 tomorrow, 40 in denver. if you're heading to new york, 51, 84 in miami and 47 in seattle statewide, temperatures will be pretty much in the pleasant zone for all of you. a few snow showers in the morning in tahoe and then later in the day, clouds will be clearing 43 degrees, 72 in los angeles with plenty of sun. right now, we don't have any clear skies. it's a lot of cloud cover. and up to the north, this system that is passing in, moving through, i should say, is bringing a few sprinkles to the northern portion of the state. for us. the cloud cover continues. and then behind the system, the winds will be picking up wind advisory tomorrow morning until friday afternoon for solano county northerly wind gusts to 45 miles an hour may blow around those holiday decorations. so

you'll want to secure them. watch out. could see a few tree limbs down and the potential is there for a few outages. here's a live view from our san jose camera where it is 62 degrees, 61 in san francisco, oakland, 59, palo alto, you're at 56 degrees along the embarcadero. no wind to speak of as we look from our kgo roof camera, mid 50s from santa rosa to fairfield, 57 in livermore. and one other live picture all decked out for the holidays, the embarcadero center, sunny and warmer for thanksgiving. gusty winds in the hills tomorrow afternoon through friday. fire danger is limited because of the fact that we've had rain recently. so we're not concerned about it, but always remain vigilant, colder nights and cooler days this weekend. so those few sprinkles will continue to move in through the north. and then the snow will be coming in into the tahoe area. but it's just a chance of rain, snow mix, snow level coming down to lake level tomorrow morning. keep that in mind if you are traveling skies clear behind it and then the winds pick up out of the north, 3 p.m, 32 miles an

hour in fairfield. those winds will ramp up going into late tomorrow night and the winds will translate down to the coast as well tomorrow morning, gusts friday morning excuse me, gusts to 40 miles an hour. so that is concerning, especially if you do have plans to drive somewhere. keep that in mind. 30s 40s for you, 50 in the morning in san francisco tomorrow afternoon, santa clara and the south bay, 71 degrees. same thing for gilroy, 72 in san jose. the sun will be shining on the peninsula. 68 in san mateo, 64 and half moon bay daly city, 63 degrees. 67 in the city and in the north bay. you're looking at plenty of 70s hills will be gusty. napa 7072 san rafael in the east bay 68. oakland fremont had inland 70 degrees there for you in concord, 72. fairfield accuweather 70 forecast a treat for thanksgiving holiday warmth with us dry for shoppers on friday but the chill settles in and as frosty cold mornings for the weekend cooler days below average temperatures next week j.r. and dan but lovely nonetheless. >> yes.

bernard sat down with the marin county man whose voice brought charlie brown to life. all those years ago. charlie brown now charlie brown. >> it's been a half century since lucy first taunted charlie brown with the football on thanksgiving. but like most kids, charlie grew up. >> i'm todd barbee and i voiced charlie brown on the thanksgiving special. >> todd barbee from san anselmo is remembering a charlie brown thanksgiving, which made its tv debut in 1973. todd was just 11 when he gave voice to the iconic peanuts character in a san francisco recording studio south of market. >> occasionally, bill melendez, the animator and director, would

come in, and i have very fond memories of him coaching us a little about how he wanted to hear the voices come out. >> todd pulled out his old script, proving he's still got it. >> i can't believe it. she must think i'm the most stupid person alive. the football gag is a classic. hold it. ha, ha. you'll pull it away and i'll land flat on my back. flat on my back and kill myself or kill myself. >> but as for the kick, todd says it took 27 takes to get the scream right. todd it's just such a classic scene and it's something i think that so many people can relate to from all walks of life. >> if you know you're your you put your trust in somebody and they take it away. >> todd and others who gave voice to the thanksgiving peanuts characters recently attended a 50th anniversary party at the charles m schulz museum in santa rosa. its curator shares his favorite scene from the special that charlie brown doesn't know how

to cook. >> and so snoopy jumps in and woodstock helps out and they make what they know how to make, which ends up being toast. popcorn, some jelly beans and pretzels, that kind of thing. what's this? >> it's really mind blowing that it's been 50 years today. >> todd is a site planner who designed the new home for the skystar wheel at fisherman's wharf. but he'll always look back on his days bringing charlie brown to life. the reason this has held up and played for 50 years in a row is because charles schulz really had his finger on the pulse of a part of american culture that has never really gone away in marin county. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> i think that's exactly right. >> he tapped into something that is so authentic then and authentic today. it's just timeless. i love seeing the clips, but is it bad that i keep thinking about charlie brown's christmas and not thanksgiving? >> that's like, where's the tree ? >> that's another great classic

the news. >> we try really hard to catch people doing these these car break ins. it's the scourge of the city. >> that officer got injured trying to stop a car burglar. the abc seven news i-team has obtained these exclusive crime scene photos showing the aftermath of a wild ride through san francisco's north beach. now, this case from april 2022 involves the same person who is now the first suspect arrested under the sfpd's new bait car campaign. >> yeah, dan noyes is back with an update to his i-team investigation. >> j.r. and dan, the first man

arrested under the latest bait car campaign has a long criminal record, including that crazy night in 2022. when i first told the story last month, some viewers asked me for more information how this defendant was able to get back on the streets so quickly after such a serious incident. >> here is the first look at a crime scene that spans several blocks in san francisco's north beach. >> it didn't receive much media coverage after 930 on a tuesday night in april 2022. police spotted a stolen suv used in multiple car break ins that day. >> the police sort of trapped him. this is a one way street. he they trapped him down there. police had the suspect, 24 year old robert sanza, in a dead end on union street past montgomery. >> but he rammed the suv into a patrol car and sped away. he took out this garage on alta street, sideswiped cars and returned to the intersection where officer riley bandy had

just pulled up, getting out of his patrol car. >> he just headed right straight for my car and tried to run me over. so i had to jump in back into my car to avoid getting killed. >> he was aiming for you? >> yeah. >> your body. oh, yeah. >> because i jumped back in and he slammed right into my car. you know, if i had waited a second more, i'd have been dead, so. and then he did it again. i tried to get out of the car. same thing. he backed up, did it again. >> bandy left by ambulance and says he still feels the effects of the back injury. he suffered that night. next santa drove onto the sidewalk, hit this staircase, took out a vespa, made it to columbus and broadway, where he slammed into a civilians car, injuring him. sanza ran from that scene. officers finally catching him a few blocks away in chinatown. he victimized a lot of people that day. >> wasn't just me. >> at first, prosecutors charged sanza with several counts of assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon. hit and run, evading an officer with willful disregard, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor possession of burglar tools in a

plea deal. all the charges got dismissed except a single count of evading an officer. so i was really surprised to know that they that they really dropped you know, almost everything that caught proceeding also included an incident from february 2nd of last year. police responded to the japantown garage for a report of an auto burglary. officers tried to detain sanza as the suspect, but he fled, got in his car, ran over an officer's foot and hit a parked car. that case brought nine more charges, including assault upon a peace officer, burglary of a vehicle, hit and run, and resisting arrest. i wanted to find out why all those charges were dropped except for a single evading in two incidents that injured officers and a civilian and did all that damage to homes and cars. >> i certainly don't want to see any officer injured while doing their job. >> district attorney brooke jenkins discussed the case with me. but through their offices, the public defender, sylvia

wynn, the prosecutor on the case, farah zahra, and the judge, linda colfax, declined my requests for an interview to the hearing. transcript show that the probation department did not agree with their plea deal that would let robert sanza avoid prison time by participating in a residential program. quote probation instead recommended that he be sentenced to serve his time in prison. still sansa got out with time served a little over six months in jail. how did that happen in so was that a good outcome, do you think so? >> i have looked at that case briefly. i was left with concern about that plea. it is not something that on its face, i believe i would have done. >> this case began under former prosecutor chesa boudin before his recall, but a wrapped up in the early months of brooke jenkins administered nation. >> there was a culture that had been established here by the prior administration in a very lenient plea offers. and it

takes time to sort of correct course to have lawyers understand the true value of a case, the true public safety risk that certain people pose. >> robert santa got arrested again september 1st. he's accused of breaking into a bait car, taking burberry bags, belonging to san francisco police department on the same day. he's also charged with breaking into two rental cars, including this one with out-of-state plates at this parking lot along the embarcadero. linda and dan olliges lost cash, a $1,200 ipad and a $3,500 laptop. what does it mean? anything at all that the police were able to catch your guy with their bait car? it worked. i mean, they're they're law enforcement technique worked. >> it does. but then, you know, let's see what happens to this guy because, you know, it wasn't his first rodeo. you know, it's a professional job. what are they going to do, slap them on the wrist and let them out? and a couple of months, one other twist in this case, the court

asked officer bandi to write a victim impact statement that he read for us. >> i request leniency be granted to mr. sansa and that the charges be dropped. i said mercy always triumphs against judgment. let us in 2022 with mercy and forgiveness and grant mr. sansa his freedom. >> there is no indication from the transcript reports that the judge considered banti's statement or even read it between him and i. >> there's forgiveness. you know , i had no idea that he would go out and do it immediately again, as soon as he got out. that's the bay area for you, though. it's you know, it's this these crimes happen so often. robert santa has a trial date at the end of december where it will probably push into the new year. >> in the meantime, he remains in san francisco county jail. dan, j.r, that statement from the officer's powerful. what a i did not expect that, right? yeah, exactly. all right. >> thanks. fascinating. thank you. thank you, sir. thanks, guys. >> to get in touch with the i

a look at highway 101. gas prices continue due to drop in california. they're down $0.10 in the past week and $0.50 in the past month, according to triple a, california now averages. $4.94 per gallon. >> and the cost of a thanksgiving meal isn't cheap, of course, but this year it's going to cost less than last. and american farm bureau federation survey found a 12 item thanksgiving meal for ten will cost about $61. a person on average. it's a 4.5% drop from last year. experts say people can be thankful for slowing inflation. >> interest rates have been really high for the for the last couple of years and so that has been painful for people who are trying to buy homes and things like that. however it has taken

back to the community. you know, there's a lot of people out there that are less fortunate and it's important that we kind of show our commitment to taking care of those people in need. >> this is patrick's fifth year of volunteering at glide, and he says he's noticed more and more people helping out. >> covid really did a number in terms of having people realize that the world is tough. so you see a lot of a bigger population of people in the community come out and volunteer for glide. we have about 100 volunteers making their way from all over the bay area. >> some folks even fly home to be part of the glide celebration and part of the celebration is making sure those hardest to reach still get a meal. >> volunteers preparing hundreds of sandwiches to be handed out on the streets. i'm here with my kids to take a few minutes to realize that we have a lot that we are grateful for. >> but not everyone does. >> catherine stoltz and her children are here from burlingame. i just chopped vegetables and i'm helping so many people. >> so it's just an easy thing to do that can help people.

seven on your side got involved in. michael feeney joins us now with what turned out to be a happy ending. oh, yeah. >> thank goodness. thank goodness. look, this could happen to anybody and that means you or me, a thief manages to steal your telephone number, takes over your email account, then starts draining your bank account. >> helpful. he. >> amanda moon has gone through a lot. >> i had to stop working. i wasn't able to take care of my kids. it was like it was kind of like i was mentally like just it was very distressing and very understandable. >> amanda's bank account was raided and over $46,000 stolen. amanda says the thieves managed

to get her mobile phone service switched over to them. >> so i was a victim of sim swapping and somebody had hacked my bank accounts and stole money . and the banks were refusing to return the funds to me. >> amanda contacted her bank chase. she also contacted the bank where her money was wired. wells fargo and her mobile phone provider comcast xfinity. i also contacted like the b-b-b, the cfpb, and so the companies were reaching out to me. >> so i was speaking with them. they denied all my requests. >> she just kept going, had an attorney friend send a letter. >> so actually a coworker had recommended that i reach out to you. and i had known about you and i felt like maybe you could help me with my situation. >> amanda did not give up, so i don't know. >> i think it was like a cumulative thing or i don't know what made chase change their minds. they ended up giving the

money back all of it. >> all of it >> all $46,000. we asked chase for a comment. we refunded our customer in full after reviewing her case. if you suspect any fraudulent activity, call the number on the back of your card to report it to your bank. wells fargo tells us it sent amanda a letter and respectfully requested that she continue to work with her financial institution. comcast xfinity told seven on your side, the issue is still being looked into and we will follow up once we receive more information on the lesson here. if something bad happened to you, do what amanda did, contact everyone you can think of and don't stop trying. we stayed on them. i'm pretty sure the cfpb, consumer financial protection bureau really stayed on them. >> you told me about this a while ago, that you're working on it. you did, sam. how scary. >> i know. really scary. >> good job. thanks thanks,
