the news. it's our top story. >> patrolling the thanksgiving day parade tonight, an inside look at the lock tight security strategies from the nypd. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. tomorrow in new york city, it's all about celebration and security. here's a live look at that iconic skyline tonight. everything is ready for tomorrow. every year carries its own challenges. of course, with a parade of this size packed into those tight city blocks. but with the war in the middle east and a strange car explosion along the canadian border today, police are on high alert. reporter n.j. burkett with our sister station in new york is there. >> eyewitnesses said it looked like a missile. surveillance video shows how the car crashed

and burst into flame after authorities say it hurtled toward the canadian border at speeds of more than 80mph, in about 30ft from me, i seen something airborne. >> i first thought it was an airplane. it looked like slow motion. and i said, my god, it's a car. >> the driver and his passenger were killed. according to some reports, the car was seen on video leaving a casino on the american side before the crash. whether the crash was accidental or intentional was not immediately clear. >> i want to be very, very clear to americans and new yorkers at this time. there is no indication of a terrorist attack . >> hundreds of new york city police officers are taking up positions on the upper west side tonight, watching the crowds on central park west amid newfound concerns about security before, during and after the parade

macy's thanksgiving day parade is one of the largest parades in the united states, more than 3.5 million spectators tightly packed along a route that stretches for less than three miles. the parades vulnerability to violence is undeniable, and nypd commanders have been stepping up security and surveillance surrounding it for more than a decade. but the war between israel and hamas is raising tensions around the world. former fbi special agent in charge rich franklin. >> this is a heightened state of when things could occur. so they're not letting down their guards. they're doing everything they can to go out and make sure that we are safe. >> the nypd has alerted officers at crossings into and out of the city, bridges and tunnels to sharpen their vigilance. the department's aviation units will watch from the skies above the city authorities are also concerned about the potential for protesters to disrupt black friday shoppers or even the

parade itself. we're saying come out, enjoy yourselves. >> we will do our job. your job is to have as much fun as possible. these are memories that will last a lifetime. >> n.j. burkett, abc seven news. >> in the middle east, the deal to free hostages and pause the fighting between israel and hamas is being delayed until friday. no reason is given, but israeli officials say that is the earliest hostages will be released. the cease fire is expected to start tomorrow and last for days. israel is going to release 150 palestinian prisoners in exchange for 50 hostages. those hostages are women and children. three of them reportedly are american teens. new details tonight on a deadly shooting at a bar in pah'-ha-row in monterey county. we've learned one of the victims is a san jose woman. she is 36 year old caroline lena martinez. she worked as a waitress at the bar. her sister says there was a fight early tuesday morning and several people got kicked out.

down south, boy, a huge traffic mess. all lanes are open tonight on northbound i-5 near the grapevine lane. but it was really bad earlier for a big rig crash this morning, spilling those metal poles you saw all over the highway lanes gradually open. but there was a massive backup that caltrans says stretched for roughly 30 miles. and as the helicopter shot pulls back, you can really see that backup, all lanes finally reopened at about 7:00 tonight. all right. i hope you're ready for a wonderful day tomorrow with family and friends. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the thanksgiving accuweather forecast. sandy, it looks like all systems go. >> absolutely. dan it is going to be a gorgeous day tomorrow and we shouldn't have any issues here locally in terms of the weather. so let's take a look at your thanksgiving forecast it as you wake up tomorrow morning, you'll be greeted by sunshine. it'll be clear and cool. 40s in the 50s for your temperatures, bright and breezy at noontime at 3:00 pm, we are talking about mid 60s to low 70s. it's going

investigation where $9 million in stolen property was recovered earlier this year in the meantime, now that the holiday shopping season is here, police across the state intend to crack down on crooks san francisco's district attorney is teaming up with the chp. the governor's office is dedicating $260 million to help catch thieves. last year, an organized group, remember, targeted the louis vuitton store and took thousands of dollars in merchandise. this year, union square in particular , has stepped up security. >> that was one of the few things i noticed when i was driving around looking for parking. is i saw a security person at least two on every corner. >> some of this targeted funding will go toward technology. a special investigator and a prosecutor focused on retail theft. all right. we'll get to towards the night before christmas soon enough. but tonight, the bay area is buzzing before thanksgiving from gearing up for a trip to tahoe for the holiday to excitement about seeing family and friends to all that last minute cooking. thanksgiving certainly is very

holiday at target, walmart and best buy are all closed tomorrow . and among department stores, macy's, kohl's and nordstrom are on the list. most walgreens will be closed as well. this is the first time the pharmacy chain has closed stores on thanksgiving day, but it's 24 hour locations will stay open. the same goes for cvs. we're celebrating native american heritage month at abc7. so tonight we're highlighting how indigenous community are boosting the us economy. according to the national center for american indian enterprise development. native communities are having a lot of success building sustainable economies rooted in their cultural values. they're also employing thousands of workers and generating billions of dollars. those tribes are supporting states. >> they're supporting local economy swease many of our tribes are involved in tourism. >> next month, president biden is set to host leaders from some of the 574 federally recognized

tribes at the white house. they'll discuss ways the federal government can invest in native american communities. the third annual warm clothing and toy drive is underway tonight. san francisco's american indian cultural district is looking for donations of new clothing items, including gloves, beanies, scarves and blankets for the native american community for the upcoming winter months. as well as new toys, sporting goods and gift cards for native american youth ages 3 to 16. if you would like to donate, it would be much appreciated. here's the number to call. derailed. at least 16 cars jumped the tracks. most in sulfur, which releases sulfur dioxide and is forcing evacuations in two towns in rockcastle county. evacuees are being sent to local hotels and a nearby middle school is being used as an overnight shelter. not a very nice way to spend thanksgiving. i just cooked everything. >> it's like we're having thanksgiving tomorrow. guess we're not. but it was just really scary because we don't know how long this is. this could be tonight. it could be three weeks. who knows? >> restaurants are pitching in to get folks food for thanksgiving. developing news, a mysterious respiratory disease is causing dogs to fall ill across the country. experts aren't sure what the cause is, but owners say that their dogs end up with pneumonia. and in some cases die. veterinarians also cannot say whether the disease is caused by a virus or a bacteria. for the illness has been reported in a number of states, including california. so vets are recommending owners stay away from boarding their pets this holiday season if they show signs of lethargy or are

across the bay. so here's a look at what's coming for the next few days. really nice looking weather. let's check out thanksgiving first and we'll talk about what is going to happen tomorrow. it's going to be sunny and warmer. we are looking at gusty winds in the hills between tomorrow afternoon and friday morning. and it will get colder during the nighttime hours and cooler during the day this upcoming weekend. so plan accordingly. obviously, we'll be dealing with some frost as we get later on into the workweek or holiday week and into early next weekend. take a look at a live picture from our pier 39 camera as we look at the ferris wheel there and pier 39, just good visibility tonight. temperatures in the 40s and the 50s at this hour, running warmer than yesterday compared to yesterday. and that's because of all the cloud cover with this weak system passing to our north. we haven't seen any rain. we're not expecting any. but certainly more clouds is up to the north. a few sprinkles have developed and that system is going to pass through here and

you will notice what's going to happen. skies begin to clear early tomorrow morning in the sierra. they will see some snow showers and rain showers mixing in. and for us here in the bay area, as the winds pick up, sunshine will prevail. but the winds are going to come up out of the north and that's why wind advisory has been issued for solano county tomorrow morning until friday afternoon. northerly winds gusting up to 45 miles an hour. that downslope wind could blow down some tree limbs, cause a few outages. certainly blow around some holiday decorations. so you'll want to secure those before the winds arrive. so tomorrow afternoon into the evening, northerly winds between 29 to 33 miles an hour, you will notice by late night, close to 40 mile an hour winds. it gets a little breezy even near the coastline as we head into friday morning. over 40 mile an hour winds very drying wind. the good news is the recent rain rains have added more moisture to the fuels. so we're not worried about fire danger, but always a good idea to remain aware heading into 3 p.m. friday afternoon, winds start to ease your morning
