of new york police officers on duty this morning to keep thousands of spectators safe. >> and here in the bay area, volunteers are getting into the giving spirit this thanksgiving. advocacy groups and charitable foundations preparing to hand out warm meals. this morning. >> good morning to you. it is thursday, november 23rd. and it's giving thanks. thanks. >> yes, absolutely. all the time. oh, yeah, yeah. so almost like we rehearsed it. i know. you really did it. we did. i didn't know, you know. no exactly. >> the energy and i feel in this weather that i think we're about to have today. >> i'm thankful for this. and i'm sure lots of bay area people will be great day for driving, for going anywhere and for of course, being with loved ones. yes. and here's a look at by the way, i'm stealing a little bit of jobina thunder. i got a traffic view here looking at traffic in emeryville that is busy out here already. these are our forecast headlines, sunny and mild for thanksgiving day. gusty winds in the hills late today and tomorrow morning and colder nights and cooler days lie ahead this weekend. but right now, we want to focus on

the thanksgiving forecast starting at 8 a.m. you can see we're going to have sunny skies all through the day. and clear skies going into tonight. and it's going to be a little bit cool in the early morning hours. up until about 10:00 or so. but notice midday at noon, bright and breezy, 66 degrees inland, 63, 64 around the bay and even low 60s on the coast by 3 p.m, we're talking sunny and warmer conditions all across the bay area. low 70s inland up to about 70 around the bay shoreline, mid 60s on the coast. then of course wants to sunsets. it's going to get cool rather quickly in the evening hours, but we're going to keep these clear skies for a while. i'll have a look at the longer term forecast a little bit later. jobina. >> thank you, spencer. good morning, everybody. so checking out our thanksgiving mass transit update so today and tomorrow, bart is going to be running its sunday service. muni is running sunday service today. it'll be back to normal tomorrow and then ace no service today or tomorrow. and of course, if you rely on other forms of mass

transit, make sure to check the schedule. we know usually around this time of the morning, the bay bridge toll plaza is full and the metering lights are on. that is not the case today. this is a live picture right now. and we have a look at some of the best and worst times to hit the road. if you are traveling. so today, your best bet will be before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. the worst time to travel will be between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in just a few hours, runners will take off in san francisco's 21st annual turkey trot as always, thanksgiving themed costumes are expected. >> and basically that's just turkey, because if you do anything other than a turkey, you're out. >> yeah, we're not doing it. not not this 20, 23, not uh- the race at golden gate park will begin and end at 36 avenue and jfk drive for the kids gobbler. >> chase starts at 8:00 and all the other trotters take off at 840. now, some people wake up thanksgiving morning and decide they want to run. others get up to help their communities. volunteers in san francisco are helping the salvation army deliver thanksgiving dinner meals to people who need them most. abc seven news reporter

gloria rodriguez is live in san francisco this morning where those boxed meals are being prepared. hi, gloria. yeah good morning to you, reggie, and happy thanksgiving to you and to everybody at home. >> so we want to give you an idea of the setup here at the salvation. hundreds of volunteers will be coming through this entrance behind me. they'll be driving through here. they'll be getting some of these meals that have been prepared. and then they will be delivering them to 4000 people here in the city. and they have over 200 routes where they'll be delivering them to people mostly shut in seniors. and so right now, we're going to talk live to major matthew madsen. thank you for joining us today. and thank you for all that you do for the community. we were talking earlier about how this is such a unique program where you're actually delivering the meals to people who may not be able to get out for whatever reason, right? >> that's right. we're like a giant uber eats order for we actually serve about 4000 seniors, most of them are shut in seniors. many of them. this will be the only person they see

all day long throughout covid, people got really skittish. they got very shy, didn't want to have face to face contact, especially the senior community who was very vulnerable to the virus and so this is an opportunity just to kind of integrate and draw them out and say, hey, we love you. we want we thank you, we wish you a happy thanksgiving. so it's a wonderful, wonderful time. >> and the meals we see them behind you, they've already been prepared. the other really unique thing is that you have a culinary academy and they've put the meals together. right. tell me more about that. well we just behind us here, we have a big kitchen and we have a culinary academy. >> we're giving as part of our workforce development training for all the wraparound services that we provide for people. and some of the graduates of that program have actually helped make some of these meals we're working with a local catering company to put these together. and it's just great to see the whole cycle of things happening. we're just serving people and people, you know, lives are being changed. >> that is wonderful. and everything you see here today, again, the volunteers, they'll be driving through hundreds of volunteers. they'll be getting

here about seven this morning and then start the deliveries bright and early. but this is not all they're doing today. you also have a meal that's going to be going on in chinatown. and tell us about that. >> that's correct. we also have a meal pickup at our chinatown location. and folks have signed up. will come in, grab, grab these meals. and it's always a it's a fun time. chinatown is so lively. you know, it's a great place to be. and so while we're doing this and just just about the time we finish this, they'll be starting up over there. and yesterday we did some great stuff in the tenderloin, the culinary class. they cooked up about 300 meals. we serve folks in our residents there in tenderloin, and then we went out to the streets and served people on the streets. so we're we're already hitting it. it's a great start to the season and it will be a very busy day. >> and the other cool thing, of course, the focus today is thanksgiving and the meals today. but i know you have your angel tree program and so you give out toys to children in need. i understand the need is even higher this year. of course, we're talking about higher cost of living inflation. tell us about that. >> well, you nailed it. the

inflation, the cost of living, it's getting so difficult that a lot of families are figuring, do i eat? do i have my meds? and that's difficult. people don't need to make those decisions. and when you got children, they shouldn't have to suffer through that. so we want to help with that. and so we've we've got our angel tree program and we what we need people to do is log into the san francisco salvation army.org. if you log in to that you can volunteer. we need lots of volunteers and you could also donate. we got toys. you can take an angel tree, help put a toy in, a kid's under a kid's tree this christmas and make a world of difference for everybody. >> wonderful. well, thank you so much, major madsen. and we will check in with the volunteer in the next half hour. so be sure to stay tuned for that, guys. you know, people here waking up early to help out the community. so wonderful to see that, he said it's like a giant uber eats. >> he definitely worked on that line and we appreciate it. we give thanks, gloria. >> appreciate it. i love it. yes one of san francisco's biggest thanksgiving celebrations will feed the city's most vulnerable

today. glide is holding its in-person feast this morning. organizers say they're inviting all of their guests for the first time since covid 19 and expect to serve about 2400 people. voluntee tears from around the bay area spent yesterday preparing those meals. one of the volunteers says he has noticed more people wanting to help out. >> covid really did a number in terms of having people realize that the world is tough. so you see a lot of a bigger population of people in the community come out and volunteer for glide. >> i'm here with my kids to take a few minutes to realize that we have a lot that we are grateful for, but not everyone does. >> glide memorial church of celebration begins at 10 a.m. >> happening now, the 97th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade is underway in new york city. here's a live shot of it. the parade features 31 floats, 25 balloons and celebrity performances, including jon batiste, brandy and vogue and

cher. wow that's a big name. >> yes. >> 3.5 million people have lined the route to see the procession. >> oh, my goodness. >> every year carries its own challenges with the parade of that size, which is packed into tight city blocks. this year, new york police are stepping up security and surveillance as the war between israel and hamas is raising tensions around the world. the department has officers at bridges and tunnels into and out of the city. they also have the aviation unit in the sky watching. >> this is a heightened state of when things could occur. so they're not letting down their guards. they're doing everything that they can to go out and make sure that we are safe, saying come out, enjoy yourselves. >> we will do our job. your job is to have as much fun as possible. these are memories that will last a lifetime. >> the nypd says there is no specific or credible threat to this year's parade in the middle east. >> the deal to free hostages and pause the fighting between israel and hamas is being

delayed until tomorrow. no reason was given, but israeli officials say that is the earliest hostages will be released. the ceasefire is expected to start tomorrow and last for days. israel is going to release 150 palestinian prisoners in exchange for 50 hostages. those hostages are women and children. three of them are reportedly americans. developing news in the deadly fiery crash along the canadian border. authorities are not calling the incident a terrorist attack. abc news confirms the man was driving nearly 100mph with his wife inside the car after they were leaving a casino . the car then hit a curb and a guardrail, which sent it airborne, crashing into a us checkpoint. they both died. a border patrol worker was hurt as well, but is out of the hospital now. the fbi did not find any explosives inside the car. >> i will not have any further answers at this time. as to the individuals involved, the deceased, any motivation. and

have you made gingerbread houses in your day? >> it's never been good. >> no, it's not. mccartney is always rock hard to it's terrible. >> the christmas trees are also on display. this is abc tree farms in san jose where trees go on sale tomorrow morning. their trees are trucked in from oregon . it's not too early either. experts say if you keep your tree watered, it should last 4 to 5 weeks. according to a recent survey, 94% of americans plan to display at least one tree this year. so many of us grew up watching a charlie brown thanksgiving this year, that iconic show turns 50. >> abc seven news reporter cornell bernard sat down with the marin county man whose voice brought charlie brown to life. all those years ago. charlie brown now charlie brown. >> it's been a half century since lucy first taunted charlie brown with the football on thanksgiving. but like most kids, charlie grew up. >> i'm todd barbie and i voiced charlie brown on the thanks giving special. >> todd barbie from san anselmo is remembering a charlie brown

thanksgiving which made its tv debut in 1973. todd was just 11 when he gave voice to the iconic peanuts character in a san francisco recording studio south of market. >> occasionally, bill melendez, the animator and director, would come in and i have very fond memories of him coaching us a little about how he wanted to hear the voices come out. todd pulled out his old script, proving he's still got it. >> i can't believe it. she must think i'm the most stupid person alive of the football. >> gag is a classic. >> hold it. ha ha. you'll pull it away and i'll land flat on my back. on my back. kill my, kill myself. >> but as for the kick, todd says it took 27 takes to get the scream right. todd, it's just such a classic scene and it's something i think that so many people can relate to from all walks of life. >> you know, you're you put your trust in somebody and they take it away. >> todd and others who gave

voice to the thanksgiving peanuts characters recently attended a 50th anniversary party at the charles m schulz museum in santa rosa. its curator shares his favorite scene from the special. >> charlie brown doesn't know how to cook, and so snoopy jumps in and woodstock helps out and they make what they know how to make, which ends up being, you know, toast, popcorn, some jelly beans and pretzels, that kind of thing. what's this? >> it's really mind blowing that it's been 50 years today, todd is a site planner who designed the new home for the skystar wheel at fisherman's wharf. >> but he'll always look back on his days bringing charlie brown to life. the reason this has held up and played for 50 years in a row is, is because charles schulz really had his finger on the pulse of a part of american culture that has never really gone away in marin county. cornell bernard abc7 news.

to feel like a like a spring day, almost gusty winds in the hills late today into tomorrow morning. colder nights and cooler days will be coming up this weekend. so how warm will it be today? up to about 63 at half moon bay, 66 here in san francisco. other locations around the bay shoreline, close to 70 degrees. many inland locations will hit 70, 71, 72 degrees. so let's break it down a little bit more for you on thanksgiving day. you can see that in the early morning hours. sunny and cool, only about 51 on the coast right now and 50 near the bay. but by midday we'll hit those mid low to mid 60s even on the coast, low 60s by noon, 3:00 in the afternoon. of course, that's near the peak of our warming. so it'll be very mild in all locations and then gusty in the hills tonight. that gusty pattern will continue into tomorrow. overnight low temperatures generally in the low to mid 40s tonight. and as we look ahead, accuweather seven day forecast shows just a slight cooldown tomorrow for black friday shoppers. that pattern lasts into saturday. but we get some cold mornings coming our way over the weekend and then

even the daytime will be cooler going into early next week. >> jobina thank you, spencer. good morning, everybody. so we are going to start here with a live picture from the bay bridge toll plaza. we do not expect metering lights to come on today. very light so far, no major issues that have popped up. traffic has remained light as we show you emeryville in 8-80. the biggest note is going to be if you are relying on mass transit to meet up with friends, family and dinner later on today . so bart is using its sunday service today and tomorrow. muni today, sunday service tomorrow back to normal actually, but no service today or tomorrow. and make sure that you check the schedule if you rely on other forms of mass transit. we have new developments in the middle east. the hostage release is being delayed after initial expectations that it would begin today. abc news reporter liz landers tells us why the ceasefire and release is now expected one day later after initial hope for families, a delay in the release of hostages being held by hamas in gaza. >> israeli officials now say it will happen friday when both

sides must sign a ratifying document. prime minister netanyahu assured lawmakers and israelis that all hostages will be brought home in stages. an initial 50 hostages will be released in the current deal, including americans for gaza. he also vowed to prepare for war during the cease fire and said it will carry on until hamas is destroyed. here in the us, president biden spoke by phone with prime minister netanyahu, who president al-sisi of egypt and the qatari emir as the us stays in close contact on the hostage release deal. the israeli ministry of health is preparing for special care of the hostages once released. meanwhile al-shifa hospital has been heavily affected by the conflict. 16 premature babies were recently transferred out of gaza into egypt. a supervising doctor at the al-arish hospital in egypt is overseeing those tiny patient. >> s when the babies arrive to our hospital, you know, they are

facing a lot of bad conditions during transfer, taking their medical history, no accompanying families for them. so we are dealing with a very critical conditions for them. meanwhile in the red sea, the us shot down more attack drones. >> the defense department says they came from houthi controlled areas in yemen. there were no crew or ship injuries. secretary of state antony blinken spoke by phone wednesday with his saudi counterpart. they discussed this hostage deal, but also a durable peace agreement in yemen. in washington, liz landers, abc news. >> a former obama administration security adviser is facing hate crime charges after being accused of making hateful remarks toward a halal food vendor. 64 year old stuart sadowitz was taken into custody in new york. he reportedly harassed workers spewing xenophobic and anti-muslim

remarks. one of the food cart vendors said tuesday sellouts had been harassing him for several weeks. a construction worker said he tried to defuze one of multiple confrontation options. >> you had a lot of hatred, he was saying a lot of mean things. and i said, listen, this is not a place or time for this. you probably need to walk away from this gentleman and let him work. >> sadowitz claims the worker expressed support for hamas, which he said started the argument. the worker denies speaking about hamas at all. sadowitz admitted to abc news he overreacted and regrets what he said, but says there were no threats and no intimidation. >> in new details on a deadly shooting at a pah'-ha-row bar in monterey county, we've learned one of the victims is a san jose woman, 36 year old carolina martinez worked as a waitress at the bar. her sister says there was a fight early tuesday morning and several people got kicked out. one of them then returned with a gun. >> volvieron uno de ellos volvio armado.

are up early helping the salvation army deliver thanksgiving dinner meals to people who need them most. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in san francisco this morning where those boxed meals are being prepared. hi, gloria, and happy thanksgiving. >> yeah, happy thanksgiving to you, jobina. you know, it's been so heartwarming to see the volunteers here bright and early to help give out these meals today. and we want to show you what they're going to be giving out so you can see all of these box goods here. so in addition to a warm thanksgiving meal, they're also going to be getting some dry goods. so everything from cookies like what you see here to the juices, other dried goods, and then even look at this. so sweet, a personal happy thanksgiving card there for those who are getting these meals. so they'll have about 4000 meals that are going to be served today to people here in san francisco. most of them are shut in seniors. and so this is such an important effort. and of course, hundreds of volunteers are helping make all of this

possible. so we have a volunteer here, victor chin, who's been doing this for 30 years. so tell us why you come back year after year and help out. >> it's all about giving. you know, you've been blessed during the entire year is it's an opportunity to give back to the community because there's a lot of people out there who just shut ins and they don't get to see people. they don't get a meal. they're living day by day. so it's an opportunity to just go out and bring some cheer to them. and it's always a difficult time, especially when you're alone, because i look at my mom and she's alone right now, too. but we all try to make an effort to go out. but what about the other people that don't have family? you know, how do they get taken care of? and so we try to take care of them. so that's what makes it all rewarding, that when you bring things to people and they got a smile on their face, it makes it all worthwhile. >> yeah. and we see all of these boxes here that will be given out today. what is your role going to be today as a volunteer

? >> try to help coordinate and get everything to run smoothly, trying to assist the other people in any way that i can. and i understand you chat with the volunteers that are going to be going to the homes and you kind of give them a little advice. >> tell us what you tell them. >> it's not about dropping off the meals. it's not about being a ninja delivery person. and doordash. it's about stop giving, giving them the meal, greeting them, giving them a smile and saying hi. because a lot of them, this may be their only contact during the entire day. and so you want to bring them a smile if you can do that. that's better than the meal itself. yes >> so important. thank you again, victor, for everything that you do. and you know, let's share some of the other volunteers here. so you'll see some other volunteers that are helping kind of coordinate the routes. there's going to be 200 routes. and so basically, volunteers will be driving through here. they'll be picking up the boxes and then delivering them out in the community. and you could see all of these folks who are out here already. and again, more will be arriving throughout the day as they deliver these meals to people
