this is america this morning. >> good morning, everyone. it's the day after thanksgiving. i'm derek dennis. >> i'm andrea fujii rhiannon and andrew are off this morning. we begin with the temporary truce now in effect in the mideast. >> despite smoky skies over gaza, the cease fire appears to be holding, clearing the way for today's scheduled release of some hostages. abc's liz landers joins us now from washington with the latest. liz good morning to you. good morning, derek. >> this ceasefire has been an international effort brokered by the qataris, egyptians and americans. a senior us official says that president biden has been very hands on in these hostage negotiations. shadowman a this morning, anticipation for the first release of hostages set to be freed in mere hours in a deal struck between israel and hamas. israeli officials announcing that a cease fire began this morning. qatar officials expect the first hostages to be released a few hours later. the initial group

released by hamas will be 13 women and children in exchange for palestinian prisoners. the deal will last four days. families of hostages remaining hopeful despite delays. >> i still fear for his life, and we know nothing about him, about his medical situation and so on. and. wait. >> and president biden, when asked if he expects the youngest known american hostage, abigail adan, to be released. my fingers crossed. >> also anew after israeli forces alleged the al-shifa hospital contained a hamas command and control center beneath the campus. >> now that the irrefutable truth of hamas's exploitation of hospitals in gaza is in full display to the world, they announced the director of the hospital was arrested and transferred for questioning about any knowledge of hamas using al-shifa.

the parade route, going. abc news has learned that pro-palestinian protesters plan to demonstrate at shopping malls across the country on black friday. it's adding to worries of brazen armed robberies that have plagued retailers all year. from los angeles, where a flash mob entered this nike store with trash bags getting away with more than $12,000 in merchandise to cities like philadelphia now on high alert. >> these were criminals. everybody in this city should be angry. >> nationwide, in 2020, two, retailers facing more than $112 billion in losses due to organized retail crime, a 19% jump from the year before. >> for you don't know who you're going to be shopping next to, whether that's an undercover detective deputy and if your intent is to steal, you're going to be arrested and taken to jail. >> authorities in california conducting raids, recovering more than $350,000 in

merchandise across two locations in the oakland area. and yet another concern for retailers, will consumers be in the mood to spend while shoppers have been opening their wallets so far this year? the worry is they could pull back over the holiday shopping season, a time when retailers depend on making up to a quarter of their annual sales. the predictions are for a more cautious shopper this holiday season, with sales expected to increase 3 to 4% from last year to a record level around $960 billion. derek andrea. >> allison kosik, thanks. the rainbow bridge in niagara falls is open again following wednesday's fiery crash. the span reopened thursday evening just over 24 hours after a car slammed into a median. then a us customs booth. the people in the car died. they're identified as a husband and wife in their 50s who lived nearby. the fbi has determined the crash was not an

act of terrorism. >> new york city mayor eric adams is defending himself against accusations in a new scandal. the democrat now faces a sexual assault claim stemming from his time with the nypd. here's abc's aaron katersky. >> the mayor of new york is accused of sexually assaulting a woman 30 years ago in a new court filing. the woman alleges she was sexually assaulted by defendant eric adams in 1993. while they both worked for the city of new york. adams said he doesn't know the woman calling the allegation absolutely not true. >> just something absolutely that that has never happened. and i don't recall ever meeting the person who made the this allegation. the woman filed her claim just before the midnight expiration of new york's adult survivors act, the temporary law signed last year by governor kathy hochul allows adult sexual misconduct accusers to file lawsuits that previously would have been barred by the statute of limitations under the same law. >> e jean carroll successfully sued former president trump for

at least $5 million. and in the past week, jamie foxx. guns n roses frontman axl rose and sean diddy combs also faced adult survivors act lawsuits. fox and rose denied the allegations. combs also denied, then settled. the mayor's accuser filed a notice that does not include specifics of the alleged encounter. but broadly accuses adams of causing physical, psychological and other injuries suffered as a result of conduct that would constitute sexual offenses. she is seeking at least $5 million. this is a precursor to a formal complaint where the woman would have to lay out the details of her accusations against the mayor. she's also accusing the city and the nypd of discriminate an she would have to spell out those claims as well. aaron katersky, abc news, new york. >> dozens of kentucky residents forced to evacuate because of a toxic chemical spill are returning home. a train derailment sent about 16 cars off the tracks. two were carrying molten sulfur that

underway between israel and hamas. >> it's supposed to include the release of dozens of israeli hostages. as abc's patrick reevell joins us from tel aviv this morning. and patrick, do we know how this expected release will play out? good morning, derek. >> yeah, the temporary ceasefire here came into effect a few hours ago. there was intense fighting right up to the start. now, qatar, which mediated the deal, says the first 13 hostages will be released later today around 4 p.m. local time. they'll be handed over to the red cross, which will bring them out via egypt and then be flown by helicopter to an air base in israel. they'll be debriefed and then allowed to call their loved ones and then brought to five hospitals near tel aviv. hamas has agreed to free around 50 hostages, women and children in exchange, israel will release around 150 palestinian women and teenagers, and they will be released in batches each day of this four day pause, which can be extended if hamas frees more hostages. us officials say there's three americans on the list, including three year old abigail morrison. but her family says she will not be among those

freed today. and there's hundreds of trucks of aid due to move into gaza. during this pause. but israel's government is making clear once the hostages are free, it says it will renew this war. >> all right, patrick, and how significant is this pause in all the fighting? yeah andrea, i mean, a lot of countries are hoping that this temporary pause can become a permanent one, but israel is insisting that's not going to happen. >> israel's defense minister telling us his troops overnight telling his troops, i should say, that he expects another two months of intense fighting after the cease fire. and civilians in gaza are telling us they are afraid of what is going to come after this pause. derek patrick reevell in tel aviv for us. >> patrick, thanks. >> still overseas now, the world health organization is in contact with chinese authorities about a worrying spike in children suffering from respiratory illnesses. abc's britt clennett is in hong kong with details. >> as the un health agency is investigating what it calls cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia . >> with some hospitals in northern china overwhelmed with
