committee of the red cross, 24 hostages were released friday, 13 israelis, 10 thai, and 1 from the philippines. abc's matt gutman is in israel with the latest on the hostages who have been reunited with their families and when more could be returning home. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. we expect 13 additional hostages to be released today, that according to a list that israel received overnight. we understand that a significant number of them are going to be children, more than yesterday, and we expect the process to play out similarly to yesterday. hamas will deliver the hostages to the red cross. the red cross will take them from gaza into egypt, then they'll be bused into israel, and after medical checks there, they will finally, after seven weeks, be reunited with their family. overnight, hamas releasing video of that hostage exchange. those elderly women looking frail carried to waiting red cross vans, mother and son loaded aboard. in gaza residents crowding the first batch of hostages, exactly seven weeks after hamas abducted

them into the gaza strip. 9 women, 4 children, a total of 13 israelis released. there were also ten from thailand and one from the philippines, none were american. president biden reaffirming that he'll continue to fight for the release of all the hostages including americans. >> today's release are the start of a process. >> reporter: israel had expected the release of 13 hostages yesterday. the release of the thai and filipino hostages, a surprise. just after 4:00 p.m. local time, hamas began delivering those first hostages. by 6:00 p.m. they crossed out of gaza and into egypt where they were met by an israeli secret service team. about an hour after that, this video showing them entering israel then greeted by an israeli military unit specializing in working with hostages. the hostages then sent to hospitals in central israel. all of them said to be in good condition. ♪ the news greeted with relief and jubilation in tel aviv. it was just a short time ago that the hundreds of people here received the news that the hostages are with the red cross,

that they are safe, and this spontaneous singing broke out. people dancing. people also crying here. amidst the celebration, these tears, and worry about the more than 200 hostages still in gaza and the long road to recovery. overnight one of those reunions. he's seeing his wife, doron and her two daughters, raz and aviv, for the first time since they were last seen in the back of a pickup truck on october 7th. her husband saying in this video that he is happy to receive his family back, but he won't celebrate until the last of the hostages come home. under the terms of the deal, hamas agreed to return some 50 hostages in exchange for a four-day cease-fire and the release of 150 palestinian women and minors from israeli jails. those former prisoners getting a hero's welcome as people poured into the streets of the west bank to celebrate their freedom. the cease-fire allowing some 200

aid trucks to enter gaza bearing fuel, food, water, and medical supplies, the largest aid convoy since the start of the war. the silenced guns also enabling residents to assess the damage for the first time. this video shot with the damage apocalyptic. now, if those hostages are released, we expect to see more celebration in this square here again tonight, and israel is set to release 39 palestinian prisoners from its jails to the west bank, but they'll only actually be released once those hostages set foot in israeli soil and it's important to note that so far that cease-fire is holding, and i can tell you people on both sides, israelis and in gaza, hoping that it stays that way for the next two days. whit? >> whit: all right, matt gutman, thank you. and joining us now from texas is chen dori-roberts, his cousin doron and her two daughters, who are just 2 and 4 years old, were released by hamas on friday.

thank you so much for joining us. we truly appreciate it. first, have you been able to speak to your cousin yet or hear anything about how she and her daughters are doing now? >> well, good morning, whit. thank you so much for having me on the show this morning. i have not yet had a chance to talk to my cousin. i know they're in the hospital right now in schneider in petah tikva under medical exams and care after a long period of time of being taken by the hamas and held hostage for almost 50 days. i'm sure that she and her two daughters are going through some major examinations and care by the professional staff and surrounded by family and loved ones again. i've received very heartwarming pictures and messages from them. i will probably reach out to them later on today and would like to hear their voices and make sure that they're all doing well and healthy. we are very, very excited for this wonderful news yesterday from gaza.

seeing them taken care of by the red cross over the border to the israeli army base and then from there to the hospital was one of the most exhilarating moments. >> whit: and, chen, let me ask you about that emotional roller coaster. seven agonizing weeks you've been waiting for news on this. one can't imagine what your family members went through while being held hostage. describe that moment when it was official that they were released and going home. >> it was very, very emotional for me. i saw a little bit of -- even just coming from the ambulance, from the red cross ambulance that was carrying them over the border, but i was waiting actually for the confirmation, the official confirmation from the israel army and from the government to let us know that all 13 hostages was actually in those ambulances, and once i got there, i was very emotional. >> whit: and, chen, while three of your family members are now home safe, this must still be

incredibly difficult for you and your family, because your aunt was killed, and her partner is still being held hostage. what can you tell us about them right now? >> it is horrible that complex reality when doran had to, unfortunately, see with her own eyes her mom being murdered in front of her on the way to gaza, and the entire time she was there, we actually held the burial service, and we now have a temporary grave for her laid down next to her sister, my mother. that's the last time that i saw her alive was 3 1/2 months ago at my mom's funeral. she was there to support me and to -- held my hand, and now she is laying there next to my mom, and one day soon i think that the family will go up again and visit their mom.

protests, is now in the hospital with serious injuries after getting stabbed by another inmate. >> the court commits you to the custody of the commissioner of corrections for a period of 270 months. >> reporter: 47-year-old chauvin is serving out his 21-year federal sentence for violating floyd's civil rights and a 22 1/2-year state sentence for second-degree murder at this medium-security federal correctional facility in tuscon, arizona. back in august, officials moved him there from this maximum security minnesota state prison where he was mainly kept in solitary confinement largely for his own protection. the bureau of prisons only revealing an incarcerated individual was assaulted at the federal correctional institution tucson yesterday. in a recent documentary called "the fall of minneapolis," chauvin spoke to the media for the first time calling the trial and sentencing, a sham, claiming the use of his knee on floyd's neck was part of his police training manual. >> i'm looking at it right now, 5-316, restraint technique right

abc's reena roy joins us with this story. good morning, reena. >> reporter: gio, good morning to you. well, as many of us probably remember, this story was in the spotlight for years with a very long legal process playing out in front of the public, and now it appears oscar pistorius will soon be a free man. it was a case that made headlines around the world, and now former olympic runner and convicted murderer, oscar pistorius, is set to be released from prison early, more than ten years after fatally shooting his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> release for oscar pistorius has been confirmed. >> reporter: the so-called blade runner and double amputee, who won gold on the track as a paralympic sprinter, is now set to be released from this south african prison in early january. >> he was originally sentenced after he was convicted of murder in south africa to serve 13 years and 5 months or so of prison. after about ten years of custody being served, he should be released early january.

>> reporter: a jury convicted of pistorius of murder after he killed the south african model back on valentine's day of 2013. in emotional testimony, he claimed that he thought she was an intruder, shooting her with his gun four times through his bathroom door in the middle of the night. >> yes, i killed -- i shot and killed reeva steenkamp. >> i did, my lady. >> reporter: overnight a steenkamp attorney and spokesperson sharing the impact statement read from reeva's mother june, who says she doesn't oppose pistorius' release, but says, at this time i'm not convinced that oscar has been rehabilitated. >> june said in her victim impact statement that she has concerns about oscar pistorius' anger management issues. she has concerns about his tendency to commit violence against women. >> reporter: and south african authorities say from now until his release in

pistorius will be in a prerelease program that helps inmates prepare to reintegrate back into society, and part of his parole conditions, therapy for his anger issues and for gender-based violence. erielle? >> erielle: such a fascinating case. reena, thank you. turning now to somara theodore looking so bright and cheery this morning, but we are talking about snow out west. >> somara: that's right. in nebraska they had snow and blowing winds. that led to precarious road conditions, along with reduced visibility. take a look at this video here. we actually had a truck run into the back of a snowplow there. just really difficult driving conditions. as a result, the national weather service office out there has issued winter storm warnings, parts of this country under winter weather advisories up to davenport, wichita. speaking of kansas, we could see four to eight inches, three to six generally. other areas back towards breckenridge, omaha, about one to three inches. what happens next? this system then starts to traverse into the great lakes. chicago, one to two inches doesn't seem like a lot. but between 5:00 and 11:00 a.m.,

done. getting rid of hamas, they agree, is a legitimate goal, but i think there is also a growing sense that the tactics have to change. we saw yesterday usaid put out this statement really underscoring that 100 u.n. aid workers have been killed in gaza. they went on to talk about the humanitarian situation in gaza as dire, saying the needs are staggering. to me that statement was really calling out a friend. really calling out israel for a lack of precision in this war. i mean, look, the president is facing growing pressure from his own democratic colleagues to do more, to try to look for a long-term solution, to look to an end to this, to look for what happens after hamas is gone, and it was very interesting to me yesterday that the president was asked flat out about some of those calls from progressive members of the democratic party about potentially putting conditions on military aid to israel, and, guys, he did not say no to that. >> gio: let's switch gears to

the republican primary, because a lot of people are talking about this. iowa caucuses are just about six weeks away. >> crazy, right? >> gio: crazy. it's so close. we've been talking about this more and more, though, nikki haley is really gaining a lot of attention. what does she need to do now? >> you could argue she is the leading alternative to trump right now. we've seen in new hampshire polls she is solidly in that second spot. in iowa polls she's now running pretty much even with desantis. we have seen she can debate. we've seen that she can raise money. the question now, can she get voters excited? can she rally up a crowd? can she get people to vote for her? i think it's always telling when you are the target of attacks. new jersey governor chris christie has really focused on her this last week, talked about her abortion comments, and, of course, we're all going to see what happens in iowa. i hear all the time from republican voters, they're interested for someone beyond trump, but they're waiting to see who will emerge. in iowa when there are all these neighbors in a room hashing it out, maybe that will be so consequential and telling.

>> whit: you never know. momentum changes too. there's iowa and new hampshire and we saw biden he picked up much later in south carolina and super tuesday. let's switch gears again. let's talk about congress, everybody's favorite subject because they get so much done over there these days. next week the house back in session. it's the sprint till christmas. what's first up on their plate that needs to get done? >> they have so much to do. first and foremost, a big conversation about aid to israel, aid to ukraine. we've seen this huge request, a $100 billion national security request from the white house. huge disagreements in the house and the senate about what exactly to do with that national security funding, that money for aid for israel and ukraine. the lawmakers i talk to are interested in getting more money to ukraine but are really worried that the window there is narrowing. there's the sense it's now or never. they have to get this done. it was interesting to me that last week the white house was signaling that they have intelligence that iran might be looking to help russia more in the war in ukraine. to me that was the way the white house was subtly trying to call

[ laughter ] you know, there's a lot that goes into this game. you know, it started with a ten-year war with bo schembechler and woody hayes, and that's when this game was at its apex. that's when you had the hate between both schools, both regions, both cities, both states, ohio and michigan, and

then as a kid from ohio, born and raised in cleveland, ohio, you're going to have a lot of players who are from michigan that may have gone to ohio state or from ohio that may have gone to michigan and guys who have played against each other, so it's just a great rivalry, the best rivalry in all of sports, hands down. >> gio: des, we see those signs behind you, "free jimmy." coach harbaugh obviously still serving his suspension. do you think him not being on the sidelines will have a major effect on this game? >> i think it's going to have a huge impact to this game, maybe not in a negative way, but probably in a positive way because now the kids have rallied around this whole free harbaugh cry. it's michigan versus everybody. so they're going to come out there and play with an edge. so now you got this team that's destined to win a championship at least in their mind. that's what they came back for, and now you've added fuel to the fire, because you suspended the head coach, and you got him -- i don't know where he's going to

be, but he won't be on the sideline for the biggest game of the year. so now they want to go out there with that mentality, michigan versus everybody, and they want to win this one for their head coach, so it may have a huge positive effect on this game. >> gio: michigan versus everybody, and you sat down with j.j. mccarthy, blake corum, and mike sainristil this week. it's all on "college gameday" this week. what did you learn from them? >> i learned how these guys, man, they're great leaders, all three, and they're so resilient. i talked to blake. blake said when he first came to ann arbor and went to the locker room, he didn't like the culture. he just thought that it was a toxic culture, so he got together with hassan haskins and aidan hutchinson. aidan is going to be our celebrity guest picker on the show today, and they changed the culture. it is amazing how that comes around full circle, because there's no way, if you had a toxic locker room, you would have been able to deal with all

shoppers are getting their wallets out for small business saturday. a recent survey shows a growing popular among millennials for today's shopping experience. 72% of them said they plan to partake in buying from local businesses. data also shows that 61% of shoppers overall all prefer small business. saturday compared to the 56% of black friday shoppers . last year, americans spent nearly $18 billion on small businesses. on the last saturday of november. in the south bay, a school district is seeing a spike in students experiencing homelessness as the east side union high school district reports there are about 900 unhoused students in the district that is three times the amount in 2020. the east side education foundation wants to donate warm clothes and gift cards to students over the holidays. people can donate through their website that's east side hyphen fund .org/ give . now let's get a check of your weather with lisa. good morning,
