more hostages are released by hamas families in the bay area hold out hope for their loved ones and those who are stuck in gaza in the middle of the war. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm diane lim. a dramatic second day of the temporary cease fire between israel and hamas after releasing 24 hostages yesterday. another 17 were freed today, but not until after hamas delayed their release. we begin our coverage tonight with abc's chuck

sivertsen on what held up today's exchange. >> hamas releasing 13 more israelis and four more foreigners on saturday. one day after 24 hostages were freed. friday those freed hostages leaving gaza through the rafah border crossing. then taken to israeli hospitals to be reunited with their families. among those released today, nine year old emily hand hila rotem, whose mother is still being held by hamas and siblings. noam and ama. but the two coming home to no parents. their mother was killed on october 7th and their father is still being held in gaza. the four foreigners released saturday were all thai nationals as part of the exchange, israel releasing another 39 palestinian prisoners in northern gaza. palestinians crossing around trucks filled with much needed food, drinking water and medicine. as those trucks arrived after several delays. those deliveries, part of the four day cease fire deal between israel and hamas. hamas delayed saturday's scheduled hostage release, claiming israel had violated the terms of the

truce deal, alleging the aid deliveries permitted by israel fell short of what was promised. but eventually hamas proceeded with the release following mediation by qatar and egypt. meanwhile, israel's top defense official said israeli forces will not leave the gaza strip until all of the hostages are returned to israel. >> while visiting military commanders in the gaza strip, defense minister yoav galant warning hamas militants that any future truce talks would take place under fire. >> chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> here in the bay area, there is a real connection to what's going on in the middle east. we know of at least one man who has relatives who were taken hostage and there are others who have family trapped in gaza that they are trying to get in contact with. abc7 news reporter tara campbell has this update. at a red cross convoy carried 17 freed hostages inside israel saturday and two of them are oren reubens lines relatives up there is her mom, shiri weiss.

>> we first met the pacifica resident a couple of weeks ago, putting up posters of the more than 200 hostages still being held by hamas. >> three of my first cousins have been have been kidnaped. my cousin alon, his wife shiri, and their 18 year old daughter, and she's one of the people that is listed as the children. >> can you tell me a little bit about them? >> sure. i mean, noga is 18. she was living at home with her parents, and she's just a sweet girl. >> noga weiss and her mom, shari, have been listed as two of the hostages handed over by hamas. and saturday, i also received a message from rubenstein saying they have been released and are back in israel, where he's been for the past week. hamas delayed the handover for hours saturday amid disputes over which palestinian prisoners would be released. and over aid into gaza. everything from medical supplies to food and water are desperately needed in

our area. >> they had they still had some water even though it's tainted. so they said everyone was throwing up. everyone, you know, was it was a lot of people were sick because of the dirty water. >> vigésimo kara is a san francisco native and says he's lost dozens of family members in the war. these are only a few of the faces we lost many, many loved ones. >> and we and we still don't know to the extent of, you know, the latest number from both my mom and dad's side is over 65 family members killed. >> and he says he's expecting that number to climb. >> very difficult to function here in the us while you know, just seeing, you know, not knowing if your loved ones are are alive or dead. >> and while daunting, he says this four day cease fire does offer some hope. you know, seeing the images of hostages on both sides being released and to celebrations. >> i mean, it's just it's a feeling that of hope that, you know, this this could end. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> now we sent out this alert

this afternoon on the abc7 news app about the latest hostages to be released. it's just one way to stay on top of breaking news as it comes into our newsroom. when you download it, be sure to enable the push alerts. well, moving on. one person is dead and a second injured after an early morning shooting in san francisco. police say the two people involved opened fire on each other at about 4:00 this morning on turk street in the tenderloin near u.s. law. one of them was pronounced dead at the hospital while the other suffered non-life threatening injuries. the incident is under investigation by the homicide unit and anyone with information on this is asked to reach out to sfpd. on the peninsula, a five year old girl is hospitalized tonight after being rescued at martin's beach in half moon bay. but the coast guard says a 54 year old man is still missing. firefighters and the coast guard respond to a call earlier today that said the man and child were swept out to sea. that search went on for several hours and we

do not know the condition of the child in the east bay. alameda county district attorney pamela price held another public forum this evening to answer questions and explain what her office does as the event comes, as the da faces a recall campaign less than a year after she took office. abc7 news reporter anser hassan was there. >> the position that you are elected to me to fulfill is about accountability. >> saturday evening, alameda county district attorney pamela price held another in a series of public forums. part of the discussion to explain what exactly a da does as a district attorney. >> i believe that i am the guardian of public safety. i'm not the police. i work on things after the police do their job. >> she listed off some of her accomplishments since taking office in january. those include hiring more crime investigators, expanding victim services and creating reentry and resentencing commissions. for

police. >> i go to the da's, the da, over prosecute us to make a success of statements. and then they just send us away. >> joining her were those who were formerly incarcerated, including lawrence cox. he spoke of how rehabilitation and reentry programs lead to stronger public safety, whether it's education, whether it's looking for housing, whether it's looking for looking for work, i think it's imperative that we have reentry programs, not through just nonprofits, but through the same agencies that actually sentence us. >> and send us away. >> there was also praise for da price's progressive approach to sentencing, factoring in more context, which they believe can reduce over sentencing, especially for people of color, create a situation where the people that was once committing these crimes have an opportunity to reform and have direction not too many. >> i don't know. no other district attorney office that does this. >> in attendance was brenda grisham, who's part of the campaign to recall da price. she says even if da price boasts of new programs, that doesn't mean their successful. and she thinks da price needs to do more for

doing a brisk trade in oakland's piedmont district. local scouts help to load the trees. this lot on moraga avenue supports almost 1000 cubs and scouts who get the chance to practice their people skills. >> talking to adults for sure. for some of the younger kids, it's some sales practice. we get our cub scouts, they're our best salespeople. it's always great to come out and be helped by a second or third grade cub who can barely lift a tree. >> oh yeah. good teamwork. the lot opened 54 years ago and it's a community effort with people supporting the scouts for many generations. the lot is open saturdays and sundays 9 to 7, and on weekdays, 4 to 8 through the holiday season. on the soccer field at paypal park in san jose has been transformed into a winter light spectacle called enchant. you can go there to see some incredible light sculptures and huge illuminated trees. the main attraction is a maze called santa's magic timepiece, where visitors must

tomorrow morning may produce some coastal flooding. so yeah. so let's take a look at that beach hazard statement, first of all, which again, as diane said, is in effect through tomorrow morning. now, the greatest threat is to our west and northwest facing beaches. but as you can see, those rip currents and sneaker waves can be dangerous tides this weekend can cause further run up onto the beaches. and speaking of that, run up, a coastal flood advisory is in effect for the interior north bay and for the areas right around the bay shoreline. that's in effect from 7 a.m. to noon tomorrow. so, again, wave heights are elevated and with the high tides, of course, can produce some of that localized flooding. not severe, but it can be a well, awkward and uncomfortable. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image. high pressure is the dominant feature in our weather right now, bringing us mainly clear skies for a couple more days. but as you can see, weather is very active and unsettled out to sea. and a couple of weak frontal systems will be swinging our way by the

middle of next week. so we might actually get some precipitation. but at the moment, things are dry and calm. the wind is quite light right now. most locations are reporting wind speeds under ten miles per hour. and the 24 hour temperature change is sort of a mixed bag. some locations like up in the north bay, santa rosa, napa, a few degrees cooler than at this time last night. many other locations like oakland and hayward are several degrees warmer than last night. here's a clear view of san francisco from sutro tower. current temperature readings are 51 here in the city. we've got mid to upper 40s at oakland mountain view, san jose, 39 at palo alto and 55 at half moon bay. a clear view also from emeryville of the bay bridge and parts of san francisco. 36 degrees in santa rosa and santa rosa right now. and in fairfield, getting really chilly up in the north bay 40 at napa and livermore, 3642. heather at concord and 41 at novato. and one final live view looking across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera. check out the forecast headlines. frosted advisory freeze warning in

effect overnight. sunny days and cold mornings will be with us through monday and there's a slight chance of rain. middle of next week. here's a look at that frost advisory for the interior valleys of the north bay. temperatures will drop down into the low to mid 30s, and that's in effect until 9:00 tomorrow morning. also a little farther east over in the fairfield area, out towards the delta, it's a freeze warning where temperatures may drop below 30 degrees. forecast animation shows a few high clouds moving in overnight, especially in the south bay, which will keep temperatures from dropping very low. but with clear skies in the north bay, there'll be more radiational cooling and temperatures will be in a lower range like 38. at santa rosa, for example, 31 at lakeport. even over in the inland east bay, we'll see some mid to upper 30s highs tomorrow. generally in the low to mid 60s. it's not going to be a very mild day at all, but a sunny one. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have two cold mornings coming our way tomorrow and monday. then on tuesday, bright skies, but a little bit of an increase in high clouds. and then by midweek those two weak frontal systems i talked

police officer derek chauvin was seriously injured after being stabbed by a fellow inmate at a federal prison in arizona. the 47 year old chauvin is being treated at the hospital and is expected to recover. our abc's jacqueline lee is following this developing story. derek chauvin, convicted in the 2020 murder of george floyd, is recovering after being stabbed by a fellow inmate. >> the bureau of prisons saying an incarcerated individual was assaulted at the federal correctional institution tucson. employees at the prison performed life saving measures while waiting for ems. chauvin then taken to the hospital. minnesota attorney general keith ellison saying he was sad to hear chauvin was the target of violence, adding he was convicted of his crimes that should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation. the court commits you to the custody of the
