has families of the victims demanding a hate crime investigation. overnight, police arresting the man accused of shooting three palestinian college students in burlington, vermont. up there. hey, what are you doing? >> still down. >> the suspect identified as 48 year old jason jay eaton was taken into custody near the shooting scene located in front of eaton's apartment building. authorities say two of the victims were wearing palestinian scarves called keffiyehs while bowling over thanksgiving break. they were reportedly speaking arabic while returning to one of their relatives homes when police say the suspect approached them and fired at least four rounds without saying a word, then ran off. police said. >> the third victim with a cruiser to the hospital. >> police say two are stable at the hospital. the third suffered more serious injuries. the victims identified by their families as tazeen ali ahmad of trinity college, kenny and abd al-hamid, a student at haverford college, and hisham awartani, a junior at brown. hisham awarded his uncle, tells the new york times a bullet hit his nephew

spine and he lost feeling in the lower part of his body. burlington's police chief saying in this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate motivated crime, but still urging the public not to make any conclusions, adding there is no additional information to suggest the suspect's motive. the fbi overnight said it's providing resources in support of the investigation, hoping to help determine any potential factors and motives. the fbi previously warned of so-called lone wolf attackers motivated by the israel-hamas war. as for jason eaton, police have not revealed any other details about him. he'll be arraigned today. >> there is hope this morning that the cease fire between israel and hamas may be extended beyond today. it follows these heartwarming scenes of hostages reunited with their loved ones after 50 days in captivity. 17 more hostages were released yesterday. among them, four year old abigail edan in american, israeli citizen. but some 180 hostages remain in hamas custody, including up to nine america. as abc's justin finch

news, israel's aim is to see as many hostages released as possible and saying it's return to war will be immediate and ferocious. andrea. >> justin, thank you. elon musk is visiting israel today after facing backlash for endorsing an anti-semitic post on his social media platform. x musk is meeting with israel's president, who is expected to emphasize the need to fight anti-semitism online. musk is also meeting with some families of the hostages the us navy has helped free a commercial ship seized in the middle east. >> the navy says the uss mason responded after an oil tanker with links to israel was boarded by gunmen off the coast of yemen. the attackers then surrendered. officials say missiles were also fired by iranian backed rebels in yemen just last week, the rebels seized a cargo ship linked to israel, taking the crew captive. new york republican george santos says he expects to be kicked out of congress after a scathing report from the ethics committee. >> he faces an expulsion vote as early as tomorrow, accused of

portland, oregon, ending thanks to a tentative contract deal. >> if they really care about students, the majority of their budget should go to funding work with students. >> at issue, several key issues and problems plaguing school districts across the country. the new contract includes a 14% raise for teachers, more built in time for lesson planning. lost during the pandemic and expedited teacher hiring process. and $20 million to settle complaints about schools being too hot or cold or with rodents. >> so in order to afford that, it requires more revenue or budget reductions. and i get it. the message is work within our means. >> class sizes were also a major sticking point during negotiations on class size reduction right now, and not just in oregon. this protest was held in new york city by the teachers union, which claims class sizes have gotten out of control even after a state law capsizes last year to 20 students in early grades and 25 in high school classes. the

it again this morning on gma. >> four people are now confirmed dead in last week's landslide in southeast alaska. officials say the body of an 11 year old girl was found over the weekend. all four victims are from the same family. two other people are still missing. >> a new effort is underway in northern india to rescue 41 construction workers trapped inside a collapsed tunnel for more than two weeks now. rescue crews are now drilling vertically into the tunnel. the work is expected to take four days previous efforts were hampered by equipment problems. the workers are receiving food and water through a pipe. >> we turn now to new allegations against the parent company of facebook and instagram accused of targeting children for their data. the claims are outlined in newly unsealed court documents. this morning, social media giant meta owner of facebook and instagram is accused of violating federal

laws on children's privacy. a lawsuit now claims 1.1 million kids under age 13 have signed up for instagram since 2019, despite a policy banning kids under 13. and the lawsuit claims knowledge of those accounts is an open secret that is routinely documented at meta. >> according to the complaint by multiple states, meta not only knew too that they were recording information and tracking children under the age of 13, but after parents complained, they still did little to nothing about it. >> the legal complaint filed by attorneys general in 33 states alleges instagram coveted and pursued users who were under 13 without parental permission. disabled only a fraction of those under age accounts. in response, meta tells abc news, we have measures in place to remove these accounts when we identify them. however for verifying the age of people online is a complex industry challenge, and the allegations are part of a larger lawsuit
