>> snyder's children hospital in central israel were nine children released by hamas currently treated including 4-year-old american abigail mor edan just last night. a fourth round of releases is expected for today, but we understand there might be a delay. they were some sort of dispute over the list of hostages. this morning this morning israel and hamas with an extension to the four day cease-fire event, one with the release of 50 hostages. israelis and foreigners and release of palestinians over the israeli jails and hostages released in three batches, hamas handing off to red cross officials. those red cross vehicles clouded by cameras and onlookers. the 17 released on sunday, 4-year-old american, abigail mor edan. she is seen in the back of a van leaving because of. >> she has been through hard, hard times. we have to respect that she is only four. it is a lot to handle. so we need time to be with her.

one israeli source said once that happens, the war will not be gradual but immediate and ferocious, linsey. >> that extension sounds somewhat positive, matt, thank you. more tension some folding overnight but ballistic missiles fired to a navy ship after it came to help a tanker in trouble. chief global affairs martha raddatz joins us with more, good morning, martha. >> good morning, linsey. an incident at sea with hijacked ship, pirates and ballistic missiles launched towards a u.s. navy warship. it began a cargo ship in the gulf of aden made a distress call under attack from armed men in a small boat. u.s. central command said the uss mason gave chase has five attackers tried to flee the cargo ship in a small boat finally surrendering and then hours after that initial attack, two ballistic missiles were fired in the direction of the

uss mason from yemen where a rainy impact operate. fell short about 10 miles away, but u.s. ships in the region have been in the line of fire since the war in gaza began although this morning it is unclear whether this attack on the commercial vessel which is owned by a company led by israel he board ship is part of these larger threats coming from this rainy impact forces, george. >> george: the white house security john kirby, thank you, martha. john, what more do we know about this and whether iran was behind it and connected to the other attacks? >> definitely need to know in these early hours behind this attack on the uss mason. obviously, we are sorting through the operational details. we are obviously glad that ship was not damaged no crew were her temper missiles fell short. but again, we are looking into the details on this. >> george: what do we know about the latest on the hostage release?

>> hope and expectation is yet another installment of hostages released later today. there have been delays but we will see if we have to work through the delays today. as you heard the president say yesterday, we would very much like to see this pause continue and more hostages exchanged as a result. israel is willing to do that but it will be up to hamas to determine whether willing to come up with hostages in the coming days. >> george: we see the pictures of abigail mor edan. do we expect more americans to be released? we are certainly hoping so and she is back with her family and just turn four. we know whether americans are being held hostage and we will certainly do everything we can hour-by-hour to get them released. >> george: how many do we think will be held and what is their condition? >> if you are talking just americans, george the population left somewhere between 7-10, somewhere in that range. we know there were ten unaccounted for, missing

americans. we think the large majority of them are in the hostage population. but we don't have great information passed out. >> george: how many hostages do you think there are right now? it is difficult to know but 239, 240. we don't have a perfect picture how many there are. we have to assume there are certainly a couple hundred or so. we also have to assume, george, hamas is not holding all of them. other groups potentially palestinian islamic jihad and other radical extremist terrorist group out of gaza could be holding some but it will be up to hamas to track all of them down to see if we can arrange for exchange. >> george: to we have any contact with the other groups or only working through hamas? >> we are working through qatar with direct communications through hamas peer that is how this deal has been struck and implemented largely through qatar to hamas. >> george: what more can you say about the targeting of hamas

leadership over the weekend? what kind of capabilities that we taken away? >> this has been the main forces from israeli forces to go after the leadership here they believe if you can decapitate the group, you can certainly degrade in a significant way a planned attack in the future. so, they have been going after targeting the leadership. they have actually had some success going after the leadership, but they still have more work to do. they will tell you in the first to tell you they are not done in terms of going after that leadership and being able t to o that decapitate the group. >> george: drunk or become a thank you. >> george, breaking news overnight, apprehended after the shooting of three college students in vermont. the men and americans, and two with palestinian scars when ambushed. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky has more. >> good morning, juju. fair do my fears of terrorism and ended with a hate crime committed all in response to the

the carter family motorcade leaves with past and present members of mrs. carter secret service detail. they will stop briefly state university along the carter center in atlanta where a public visitation is scheduled this evening. people are invited to stand alongside the motorcade route to pay their respects. this is obviously a difficult time for the carter family but they are uplifted by the tributes from around the world. they share in a statement, tomorrow those tributes will continue at a ceremony in atlanta where president biden is expected to attend. the family will hold the funeral wednesday, and she will be buried at their home, linsey. >> so many eager to pay their respects, no doubt, steve, thank you. abc live will have coverage of the memorial services for rosalynn carter all day on the platforms. >> george: coming up the new book with the rift between princes harry and meghan with acts of racism. >> the latest on the cruise ship supposed to sail around the world for three years. the big question, do they even have a ship?

valleys until 9 a.m. temperatures have already dropped below 31 degrees. that was the initial outlook for the north bay. it'll warm up now. we have to go to an abc news special report. >> now reporting david muir. good morning, everyone. and we're coming on the air for a somber ceremony as the nation prepares to pay its final respects. lady rosalynn carter, the beloved wifef former president jimmy carter, her life as his dedicated to public service and humanitarian work. you can see the motorcade there on your screen. she died at their home in plains, georgia, on sunday, november 19th, just a little more than a week ago now. she was 96 years old. mrs. carter suffering from dementia, had just entered hospice care. jimmy and rosalynn carter in separable throughout most of their lives. childhood sweethearts, married for 77 years. in fact, the longest married couple in presidential history. the former president jimmy carter, is now 99 years old, describing his wife as an

equal partner in everything that he ever accomplished in just a few moments, we'll continue to see the motorcade carrying mrs. carter. it will leave phoebe sumter medical center in americus, georgia. and there is a brief departure ceremony at the hospital which we'll see here live. family members, medical staff have all gathered, former members of her secret service detail will serve as honorary pallbearers. the procession will then go into georgia southwestern state university, where there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the rosalynn carter health and human sciences complex from there, the procession will take her to the carter presidential center in atlanta, where a private arrival ceremony will take place, followed by a short service for library, museum and carter center staff. if mrs. carter will lie in repose in the library, museum lobby for public viewing beginning later today, i want to bring in abc's steve osunsami in americus, georgia. and steve has covered the carters for many years. for us, extraordinary billy moving steve and this was a partnership right until the end. it was there

>> their partnership was part of their success. you know, there's this saying that success is a is a is a team sport. the former president was very open about the fact that that his wife was a key part of his success. she he often called her his secret weapon when she was active in his administration. she was active in his life post presidency. they founded the carter center together. she was very much a part of that. i'll tell you, david, it's a it's a cold, crisp day here in americus . the sun is shining nicely on this event. the skies are fairly clear here. there are around me what looks to be maybe a 100 or so people who are standing outside along the road to get a glimpse of this, to say their final goodbye. we expect to see lines of people today at the

carter center to give their best wishes to this former first lady of the united states and, of course, of georgia. david >> steve, we knew they were childhood sweethearts. they met there in plains, georgia. of course, jimmy carter was in the navy. they married not long after his return, traveled the country began raising their children. and then he entered politics. in the beginning, a bit of a surprise to rosalynn, but she made it very clear to him along the way that we would be partners in this. if you're going to continue to work at thiss if you continue to work at this. and she was on the campaign to become president, his election to the white house. in fact, in many ways, she changed the role of first lady and had an office east wing and full policy staff of her own, that was a first. she held weekly lunches with her husband in the private dining room where he would ask her, what is your week? what is on your agenda? she would often ask him at the

end of a busy day at the white house, what did you do that and what was the reason behind that? martha raddatz said, "why don't you come to these cabinet meetings?" and she certainly did. >> she had a very powerful role. president carter said she is almost equal extension of myself. she wanted to make a difference in the white house. she wanted to make a difference in the country. mental health was a very big issue for rosalynn carter. she also supported the equal rights amendment. she was a strong advocate of that. when i think about her life and i think of 70 years ago when she moved back to plains, georgia, she didn't really want to do that. jimmy carter had been in the navy. she was an atomic enjoying a life of somewhat independent. they will talk about that as one of the most difficult periods of her marriage. another unusual thing about the carter's because they were

honest about their marriage. they didn't have this glowing picture it was perfect all the time saying no marriage is perfect, but there is was in so many ways. when she moved back to plains, georgia, she said, i don't want to go. yet, she did it. think about that, 70 years ago in the 50s, the role of women in the '50s was only to be a wife, mother, and only there to support your husband. she did all of that as well. there was a great story about her getting up early every single morning for 25 years to make jimmy carter a big breakfast of grits and toast and coffee and juice. then when they moved to the white house, you know what? i just want orange juice. she said, "i wish i had known that 25 years ago." she was an extraordinary woman and really helped change the role of the first lady of the

united states. she was really a fine example, david. >> as you know, martha we are looking at live pictures of the pallbearers. many are former members of the secret service details. we saw moments ago the family and of course the carter's have three sons, jack, chip, jeff and daughter amy. we watched her grow up in the white house, the tree house, the built on the white house grounds. 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. the family gathered there today. you can see mrs. carter's remains being brought out as part of the ceremony outside of the medical center. in these final days together and they were the longest living first couple that this nation surpassing former president george h.w. bush and barbara bush in the end they spent their final days together. i want to bring in mary jordan, "washington post" reporter.

mary, you spoke with the family about those final moments. it was so moving to read in the report, two beds, both in the hospice placed feet to feet so you could prop the beds up and look at one another in the final days. >> that was jimmy carter's idea. putting them side-by-side. he said, know my want to look at her. they were both propped up and could keep talking right up until the end. and then when she did pass jimmy carter said to his kids in the room, "i just need some time alone with her." you know, it is a long time that they were together. i'm so struck by these photos of the secret service who spent a lot of times in plains. like other jobs that they had in the other presidents, they rotated in and out. when you went down to plains,

with these guys who were they honorary pallbearers did in the last three years was they would go fishing on the pond outside our they would even until a few years ago helped lift president carter into a pool because he was very avid swimmer and wanted to keep up and swimming. it was a different pace, a slower pace, and they really got to know the carter's. and i'm not all surprised they showed up here. >> a moving tribute and mary, what do we know about the former president jimmy carter? you reported recent days he is aware remarkably sharp at times. i know he's lost a lot of weight and making a soup for him. he is hopeful to be a part of the tributes and services this week. >> it is by the hour but most recent reports was that he was determined to go to atlanta. i'm not sure if it is today or tomorrow tribute.

but then to come back home for the family funeral in plains on wednesday. i think a lot of people said they are so close. there are many stories about when one spouse goes, the other goes quickly. but you know, he was eating caramel cake that his niece made. he was getting his suit ready for the funeral. and he does say, i do not want to disappoint her but i want to show up there. it is something to watch them. i've seen them interact so many times including recently. and you can't overestimate how much time they spent together. they were in this little house that they helped build in plains in 1961, the same house. i once calculated that the secret service vehicle outside of the house was worth more than the little house that they lived in. but you know, this small place, they spent an enormous amount of

time together. so, it will be a shock to the system for jimmy carter, who of course is 99. and himself in hospice. >> that is the extraordinary thing. they define their roles long after the presidency in so many different ways. ways. humanitarian work together, they were trips around the world. they are pushed for medical care for communities in places where impoverished communities have very little access to health care. you often see them building habitat for humanity side-by-side. as mary describes side-by-side again. you reported that one of their sons, chip, had shared with you that moment when his father said, "can you give me some time alone with your mother?" that was the day before she passed. then sunday when the sun rose, she was no longer able to speak. again he asked for private moments with his wife of 77

years. tears streaming down his face. chip told you, mary, i believe, that they taught us so many things. chip is 73 years old and his father 99, his mother 96. he said, "among the things our parents taught us was grace." >> he called her rosie. we had dinner not too long ago and he would say, "come on, kid, come on, rosie." they were a very, very sweet couple. when you saw them as they grew old, it was kind of hard to believe that they ever lived in the white house. they were not in any way what people would say, glamorous or fancy. but they were very smart, very dedicated, and they wanted to make their life count. and they said that many times and why they worked against disease in africa, building homes in america and of course,

roselyn was really big on vaccinations for children and mental health. jimmy very, very open about, "i could not have done any of this without rosalynn carter." >> george: she was an equal partner and all that i achieved and as we watch this motorcade,, i listen to mary as she described a very humble home they return to plains, georgia, to live in. i know you had the opportunity of the last couple of years to visit that home. so many people would ask them along the way, what was their secret? rosalynn carter once said, "space, we gave each other space." he gave her the space to explore her own interest and play a role we had not seen and the white house. they shared more with you about the secrets to such ace to make a strong partnership that lasted until the very end. >> they did and they love talking to us about it.

when we spoke to them last, it was their final interview together with us. it was both roselyn and the former president. one of the things i remembered was seeing the president light up as he is watching his wife speak and take questions about their love in their relationship and the history. you mentioned about their home and the secret service. but when you drive past the home, one of the things you notice is that the building that has the secret service vehicles looks from the road almost as big as the howls because they are is so small. and that is some of what people have come to love about this couple and roselyn, the old-fashioned charm that their relationship just showed, the the togetherness they had and

talked every night trying to make sure they do something together. they talked about fly-fishing in that pond near that home. i was surprised they still did that at that time. they also talked about reading the bible to go there every night. they told me one of their secrets is that they would not go to bed angry. they would discuss whatever disagreements they had during the day. it was absolutely a beautiful thing to witness and it was something i think resignation's with so many people who look in on their relationship and trust cede the joy and the love that they had for each other and how they nourished each other with that love. with rosalynn and the former president from another thing is, you know, they were not fancy people. i think that is fair to say, even at the carter center where her body will be headed to this afternoon. they had a small apartment. and they didn't have big things.

it was a murphy bed in the apartment. that is where they slept when they stayed at the carter center in this small little apartment the murphy bed that they put down. and they enjoyed the time that they spent together and that small space and in the small spaces. it was such a treat to talk with them and to look in on the joy that they had in their relationship. >> they were an example in so many ways as you pointed out, steve. they often talked about not going to bed having fought without resolve whatever the disagreement might have been. they describe those disagreements as often minor and who couldn't relate to that? the few times they were not together, they would choose the passage of the bible that they would be reading knowing they would both be reading separately the same part from the bible. that was very rare that they were ever a part. trips later on in life. i want to bring in chief

white house correspondent mary bruce. mary, what do we expect as far as the first family president biden, the first lady jill biden involved in these ceremonies this week? >> david, we know the bidens will be down in georgia with the memorial service remembering and reflecting the contributions to the country but also saying goodbye to a dear, dear friend pure of the relationship between these two families is a true and genuine relationship. the french political convenience, they are dear, genuine friends. they have supported each other for decades going back to 1976 when joe biden a young senator was the first official outside to endorse jimmy carter's running for president. the two have stayed close ever since. the two families. in fact, the bidens visiting for carter's april 2021 at their home in georgia, spending a lot of time together. president biden say, it is good to catch up and talk about the old days. joe biden said, "it was not the
