the life and legacy of the former first lady. plus it's day of giving. >> abc seven and our parent company, disney, highlighting organizations that need your help this holiday season on. >> good morning to you on this tuesday, november 28th. yeah let's get a check of your weather. >> i know we're going to talk about day of giving, but first, let's get started. it's a little chilly out there today, drew. >> it's very chilly this morning. we have frost advisories, freeze warnings in effect until 9 a.m. a lot of our cities waking up to temperatures starting out in the 30s. so you've had a couple of mornings the past couple of days where we have started out on the cold side, and that's how we're beginning our tuesday temperatures right now. you can see we're down to the freezing mark in a couple of spots, if not subfreezing, like ukiah coming in at 29 degrees, about 32 in san ramon. and santa rosa. look at palo alto. good morning. you're coming in at 33 degrees. so certainly you do want to bundle up as you step out the door outside this morning, a live look from our rooftop camera. it is quiet. we expect a quiet day, but showers return later on tonight with a level one storm on the abc's seven

storm impact scale. we'll detail those showers coming up in about six minutes. let's check in with jobina into your traffic storm. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everyone. we are going to zoom in to san jose right now because we're following a multi-car crash causing a bit of a slowdown on northbound 87 and the transition to 280. you can see the speeds on 87 are around 15mph. so a heads up to you there at the bay bridge toll plaza. the backup has definite mostly filled in through the maze. now, metering lights came on at 533. reggie and gloria, thanks, jobina a frightening experience for a truck driver in oakland after a possible stray bullet crashed through his windshield. >> coming just inches from hitting him this happened as he was driving along interstate 880 near high street yesterday. this was in the morning. no one was hurt thankfully. abc7 news reporter lena howland is in the newsroom with what the driver's company is saying about this ordeal. it's a story you'll only see here on seven. >> lena reggie gee, the president of the united bridge trucking company in oakland says that the driver was going north on interstate 880, right around

930 yesterday morning when this all happened. take a look. this is the aftermath. the driver window of his truck shattered, although no bullets were recovered and only one window was struck. he said it was as if someone was trying to kill his driver. >> maybe only 50, 50 miles like that. and then then that you don't know what happened. the window is broken. and then the noise and the noise. and then the windows is broken. >> he got very lucky because just a split second, he could have been killed. so it was a very close call. >> chp tells us so far they have not received any reports regarding this incident or the owner of the trucking company says he did try to reach out to authorities but had some issues in doing so. possibly a language barrier, although the oakland chinatown foundation tells us that many in oakland often hesitate to report crimes like this out of both safety concerns

and fears that they could lose their insurance. live in the newsroom. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you so much. new developments in the war between israel and hamas after the announcement that a ceasefire has been extended through tomorrow. overnight, israel announced that it has identified 50 palestinian prisoners that it's willing to trade for more hostages held by hamas since the cease fire began. dozens of the approximately 200 hostages held in gaza have been released this morning, the biden administration told israel that when the cease fire ends, it must tailor any ground campaign to avoid further significant displacement of civilians. >> elon musk says he wants to help rebuild gaza after the war is over. he met with israeli leaders during a visit to the country yesterday. a popular israeli newspaper called the visit a pr stunt accusing musk of attempting to calm backlash over his endorsement of an anti-semitic conspiracy theory post on x. critics accuse musk of turning x into a cesspool of

former president carter, though, is said to be attending the service. and this is despite him being 99 years old and in hospice care himself. family members say he had a new suit made for today because he has lost a lot of weight and didn't have a suit that fit ahead of today's memorial, rosalynn carter will is being remembered for having lived a life of faith and service. she would tell people she felt her purpose was to help create out a more caring society. >> rosalynn carter had a determination to make a difference with her life and with the opportunities that she had to use. the influence that came with those opportunities. >> mrs. carter was 96 years old when she died last week. during the memorial, the atlanta symphony orchestra will play her favorite songs and country singers garth brooks and trisha yearwood are scheduled to perform as well. reggie, thanks. >> jobina contra costa public health says it will be testing air quality in the richmond area after flaring at the chevron

refinery. the flaring began yesterday afternoon after officials say there was a power outage at the refinery. a community warning system level one was issued because of the visibility of the smoke. that does not require any action by people nearby. chevron says intermittent flaring is a possibility as they adjust their operation. >> coming up, tackling the homelessness crisis. governor newsom announcing new funding to help unhoused residents throughout the state. celebra rating. >> the contributions of george moscone and harvey milk. the vigil held for the two san francisco leaders, 45 years since their assassination, 607. >> this morning, we expect a dry day today, but tonight and into wednesday, showers are back in the forecast with a level one light system on the abc seven storm impact scale. we'll go hour by hour on future weather show you the showers right

very severe. the city could lose state funding for things like housing projects and transportation projects. it will it could lose its land use authority. >> while the deadline was yesterday day, the state law allows another 30 days to comply so the city still could get it done. governor gavin newsom announced new funding to aggressive tackle the homeless crisis. the encampment resolution funding program will help provide shelter and housing for more than 13,000 people experiencing homelessness across the state. it is a $50 million contribution that will be dispersed across cities and counties in california. homeless advocates say this is the urf's third round of funding. newsom also says there will be additional assistance coming later for more individuals in need of housing. >> is the remaining 299 million, let's call it $300 million grant to support at least 10,000 more people getting back on their feet. the project will help

restore former encampment sites to their original state in a first of its kind study on homelessness. >> an alarming new statistic is being revealed about the state's unhoused population. they are three and a half times more likely to die unnecessarily early compared to someone who is housed. that's according to the national bureau of economic research. it studied data on 140,000 unhoused people from 2010 through 2022. researchers found a 40 year old person experiencing homelessness has a similar risk of death as a 60 year old person with housing. if you live or work in san francisco, then you already know . homelessness is one of the city's chronic issues. abc7 news is committed to finding solutions to help build a better bay area. next week abc7 hosts take action. san francisco. one hour of direct questions with mayor london breed police chief william scott and da brooke jenkins about the city's prolonged problems and potential solutions. guns along with homelessness. we'll ask the city

tuesday, i'd like to introduce you all to junior achievement of northern california. i volunteered with them for a year, and i'm also a board member. jay focuses on teaching young people about entrepreneurship, career readiness and financial literacy . so here's a little bit more about them. so it used to be k to 12. >> that was the sweet spot for junior achievement, but as we really look at the jobs and careers and jobs of the future, there's so much that you can do with 16 to 25 year olds. >> that's something somewhat new for j a focus on older students. covid 19 deeply impact that age group missing out on field trips, internships so many experiences that helped them form who they might want to be in the future. j offers free curriculum to teachers and parents, expose to students to life outside of the classroom through visits with corporate partners and volunteers like myself come to them at school. we have the resources to help them. >> there's so much tech, there's so much innovation and students

really want to know what the jobs of the future are going to look like. >> and so junior achievement is well positioned to shine a light on what skills are necessary to be able to be competitive in the workforce and we do a lot with these companies that are looking for their future workforce. and so knowing that we have the youth, the pipeline we serve, underrepresented youth, under-resourced youth students, that really wouldn't necessarily think about the trajectory of their lives when they're in 16 years old. they're just trying to make it through the day. that's where we stand out. >> and if you're not able to give financially this year, you can give with your time all of these organizations that we are featuring throughout the day are looking for more volunteers, too. so we are going to get into that with my friends here. and, you know, talk about what's the one that you love. you've worked with a lot of them. >> i do. san francisco community

health foundation. >> we've been to their event multiple times now, and that's always wonderful. and they do a lot of good work in the tenderloin and san francisco aids foundation is another one that does a lot of work in the city. so those are the ones i've been involved with recently. >> and there are so many wonderful organizations out here, as you all know. one organization that i think is really great is alejo's, which is in halfmoon bay. and they really help the farmworker community. there >> you've done stories on them, done a lot of stories with them. >> and i just think they really do so much for the farmworker community. so i really would love to kind of highlight them today. yeah mind you can't miss if you're on market street that nice purple building on 1800 market street, the sf, lgbt center, they really help, especially young queer people. >> well, if they need a safe space, help them get a job. find a life here in our beautiful city. i think that's really important when people are really struggling at an age when maybe they don't have the most resources they potentially do need. so love, it seemed all of those options. >> and we have more on abc7 news.com right on the front page of our website and our company

flashing lights mean move over. moscone and supervisor harvey milk. last night, the community held a candlelight vigil for both men in the castro district. both were shot by supervisor dan white at city hall. november 27th, 1978. george moscone is remembered as the people's mayor , harvey milk, as the first openly gay politician elected to public office in california. and he was also an activist. >> we are very familiar with politicians and candidates, and they make significant eye contact and they tell you they

next rain maker coming up in about nine minutes. let's see how we're doing with the roads with jobina. good morning. >> good morning, jared. thank you. hi, everyone. we are starting with the live camera from the san mateo bridge. and you can see the traffic is hardly moving right now in the westbound direction. lots of brake lights. we've been checking in with the chp. no word yet on what's happening at the bridge. it looks like it could potentially be a stall at the very least. maybe a small crash. so we'll continue to watch that one for you as you approach the richmond-san rafael bridge in the westbound direction due to this ongoing sig alert, your backup is about 2.2 miles long right now. and then we will end with our drive times. tracy to dublin is slow. around 53 minutes. reggie thanks, jobina. >> five people are recovering after a car crashed into a 7-eleven. this happened yesterday, just after 6:30 p.m. at diablo avenue and center road in novato. novato. police say four people were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. the driver of the red sedan was also hurt. it's unclear the extent of their injuries or if they were arrested. and officials say alcohol or drugs do not appear

to be a factor. so the cause of this crash is still under investigation. building inspectors redtagged the 7-eleven. >> scary moments for a truck driver when his window shattered while he was driving on an east bay freeway. and he believes it was a stray bullet. this happened yesterday morning while the man was driving on i-880 near high street in oakland. and we're hearing from the leader of the oakland chinatown foundation who says this is an example of how hard it is getting to do business in the east bay. abc7 news reporter lena howland is in the newsroom with a story you'll see only on abc7 news. good morning, lena. >> good morning, gloria. although the owner of the trucking company says that he did try to reach out to authorities, the oakland chinatown foundation says that many in oakland often hesitate to report crimes like this at all. often over safety concerns and fears that they could lose their insurance. here's a look at the damage to the driver's side window of a semi truck.

president of the united bridge trucking company in oakland says his driver was in this semi going northbound on 8-80 just past high street before 29th avenue at around 930 yesterday morning. that's when his driver believes a stray bullet came within inches of hitting him and shattered his window. >> the driver was pretty shaken up at this point. okay. so he doesn't even i guess he doesn't even know what might have happened or he was being followed or not. nowadays a business, you know, doing business throughout the bay area, especially in oakland. many insurance are actually canceling many business insurance policies or they will be raising it up. so high. so people are so frustrated. >> chp tells us so far they have not received any reports regarding this incident. fortunately in this case, no one was hurt. but there are still many unanswered questions here as to if this bullet hit, hit this window, if it really was a

bullet, and where it actually came from. live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc seven news. >> that is really scary stuff. lena, thank you. the holiday shopping season is now in full swing. early numbers already indicate that it's been a cyber monday for the record books. according to adobe analytics, americans spent about $12 billion shopping online yesterday. i'm i'm one of them. that number is expected to total more than 37 billion over what we now know as cyber week still need a better name for it. but anyway, those are the days between thanksgiving and yesterday. that's 5.4% higher than what we spent last year. all that online shopping means a lot of doorstep deliveries. and police want to let you know that you need to take some proper precautions is to secure your home deliveries. san mateo county supervisor david canibus says he's hopeful that $267 million in grants will help local police combat porch pirates. >> if you commit retail theft or if you commit a porch piracy,

and that has left many upset. >> but we comply with the city. the city asked me to do my everything right and we did it. and now the police give me the same punishment from other people, from other vendors, for illegal vendors, while the ban does impact illegal vendors, supervisor hillary ronen says it was necessary to deal with illegal activity, including threats and violence toward city workers trying to enforce the law. >> the problem is there's another element that has taken over the streets of the mission that that are stealing and selling stolen goods. >> and yes, we you are a victim of that. it is true. i'm not going to lie to you to help legal vendors. >> the city has set up two sites that they can use. there's an indoor location with 48 spots. and there's also an outdoor location with nine spots. officials say that vendors may

allegations and the biden administration has said that the charges are totally false. >> this morning, the man accused of shooting three palestinian students in burlington, vermont, is being held without bail on three counts of attempted murder. the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime. police say the 20 year old students were shot outside the home of a relative while speaking arabic saturday night. the suspect allegedly approached the young men and shot them without saying a word. >> three young men have been the victims of an unprovoked and terrible crime and that their lives have been changed forever. >> two of the victims are expected to recover, while one is expected to be paralyzed with a bullet lodged in his spine. this morning, abc news has learned that talks are underway right now among israeli officials to extend a cease fire with hamas beyond tomorrow. >> it comes as the director of the cia arrived in qatar overnight to help with the negotiations and jobina a major goal for israel is to get hamas

to release more hostages. right, gloria? >> more hostages were released by hamas yesterday in exchange for palestinian prisoners held in israel. the hope is that even more people could be released in the coming days. abc news is reporting israel is discussing extending the cease fire further. as long as hamas can free at least ten israeli hostages per day. the biden administration is praising the latest extension announced yesterday. leaders from egypt, israel and qatar brokered the deal. however, officials say the latest agreement comes with some risk that any pause in the fighting could benefit your enemy. >> in terms of time to refit, to rest your fighters, to rearm them, reequip them. >> the white house says up to nine americans are still held captive. it's unclear if they will be released in the next few days. four year old abigail adan was the first and only american released during the initial cease fire. more than 200 trucks
