the war between israel and hamas. the cease fire has been extended for two days to allow more hostages to be released and palestinian prisoners to be released with more aid going into gaza. matt gutman is in israel with more emotional reunions. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that cease fire holding now for a fifth consecutive day. and the nine children and two women released last night being treated here at this hospital. that as we're learning more about the conditions in which they were held. loved ones saying their family members were not physically abused but they described hunger especially toward the end when they say they were living off half a slice of bread a day. others describing the terror of being hit by israeli air strikes or their captors being killed leaving them in the dungeons. this is the moment these israeli hostages walked their final steps in the hands of hamas and into red cross vans as part of a cease fire agreement where both sides have agreed to extend the cease fire for two more days.

the red cross truck seen leaving gaza entering israel. of the 11 released, two women and nine children, all in stable condition, including a 16-year-old and 12-year-old brother. when we met their mother last week, she was shattered. after the news her children were coming home -- [ cheering ] >> we know physically they're okay. their first reunion was with their mother. that's the most critical piece of it. that they got hugs and love and the feeling of some safety after 52 days in captivity. we know that they didn't get a lot of food. there are some days they were given half a piece of bread. they lost a lot of weight. >> reporter: new details of the hostages' life in captivity. >> they still were locked up in rat holes. >> reporter: his family released over the weekend saying they were not physically harmed but their captivity was punctured by boredom and fear of israeli air strikes. >> they wanted to go to the bathroom, they had to call someone to take them out.

sometimes they would have to wait almost an hour. they feared not only for their life, they feared for the captors life. if the captors, if they were going away to get -- >> reporter: if they were killed they would leave them there? >> they were locked in this prison cell. what would happen to them? >> reporter: the white house saying at least nine americans are still held captive in gaza. the only one released so far, a 4-year-old abigail, seen here after reconnecting with her family. >> we saw the helicopter landing. i said, no. it's her? is it really her? she's really inside? >> reporter: the children physically unharmed, but traumatized. >> it cannot be okay, this child, 5 years old. i know friends of mine were killed. it can just not be okay. the more quiet it is, the more heartbreaking it is. >> reporter: even the director

of the hospital overcome. at least 69 hostages have been freed since the cease fire began. in exchange, israel releasing 150 palestinian prisoner, some the israeli government said convicted of violent crimes. others were being held without charges. their families celebrating their return home in the west bank. we were there on the ground speaking with two freed palestinian prisoners brothers who claimed they were arrested for getting into an altercation with settlers. we were so surprised and thought how come we're now being released? it was unbelievable. back in gaza, the temporary pause in fighting revealing the remnants of what was once a city of over 1 million people. homes destroyed. the u.n. saying there are over 1 million people in its shelters. nearly 15,000 killed according to the hamas run health ministry. this morning a glimmer of hope. the palestinian civil defense in gaza releasing these images. an infant buried under the rubble in the final israeli bombardments before the cease fire pulled from the debris alive.

and we hope that baby is reunited with its family. we understand just minutes ago israel began discussing extending the cease fire even further. that as cia director burns has landed in qatar for talks. it is unclear if any of the nine americans still believed to be held cappive in gaza are going to be released in the coming days. the white house saying it doesn't have much visibility into how hamas compiles these lists or even if it's hamas who is holding those american hostages. george? >> matt, thank you very much. now to the cyber attack on a municipal water system in pennsylvania. hackers linked to iran claim responsibility. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the details. good morning. >> reporter: george, good morning. today u.s. homeland security officials are investigating a potential hack on a water utility in western pennsylvania that suggests some of our nation's infrastructure is vulturable. an iranian based group of hackers has claimed responsibility, saying they targeted part of the aliquippa

water system because it uses software developed by an israeli company. they provide sewer and water services to 6,600 customers in western pennsylvania. officials of the utility told reporters that a computer system tied to a pumping station that controls water pressure was impacted. those officials say the overall network was not affected, and there was no risk to the quality of drinking water or its supply. still the notion of hackers half a world away gaining access to any part of a local water system is concerning. federal authorities, including homeland security and the fbi, are looking into the breach. some intelligence analysts worry this could be a precursor to something bigger or more widespread an image allegedly sent to the treatment plant saying they plan to target any systems made in israel. michael? >> very concerning pierre. thank you very much for that. now to the early blast of winter. snow slamming parts of the northeast to go along with the bone chilling deep freeze for millions of americans. rob marciano is in upstate new york for us.

good morning, rob. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. you get a cold outbreak this time of year, it means one thing for places like this. it means lake effect snow big time. we've been getting it all night, all morning long. got about a foot on the ground so far. they've done a pretty good job with the equipment, getting it off main street. driving through the snow bands is short of a white knuckle experience. visibility can drop to zero and the highways are still very very thick. reminds us that even though it is november, winter is coming. for many of us, well, it's already here. overnight a deep freeze on the move blasting two thirds of the country. the storm dumping heavy snow in upstate new york, ushering in the coldest air of the season for millions. residents in buffalo blanketed by snow. dangerous driving conditions in michigan making cars slide off

the snow covered roads there. in idaho, low visibility causing a multicar pileup on i 86. approximately 30 cars and semis were involved in the crash. wind chills in the 20s, teens even single digits. in vermont even cows are coping with the winter weather. >> good morning. what do you think about this snow? >> reporter: in the great lakes, the freezing air making temperatures feel in the single digits. by tomorrow morning the frigid air also freezing out the northeast. feel-like temperatures in the teens from d.c. to philly, new york city and boston. it's been relentless. snowfall rates coming down 2, 3 inches per hour, at times coming down sideways. the warnings extends through the overnight tonight. the i 85 corridor completely snow covered so that's a mess. this is a microcosm of the massive arctic air mass that's infiltrating so much of the country. robin?

>> you said it, rob, thanks so much. we're going to bring in ginger with the forecast for the frozen zone. good morning. >> good morning to you. you heard it. mid 20s now. the wind chill by tomorrow morning in new york city will drop into the teens. so yes, indeed, this is the coldest air of the season. when you put it over the relatively warm lakes. i'm from west michigan so i'm used to it. it certainly always comes in hard. you can see from south having, michigan, to redfield, new york. those warnings are on the map. brooklyn, ohio, traverse city michigan. gonna pick up more snow than you already have. this is really through tomorrow morning. some of those bands are quite thin and making their way far east. so even in eastern pennsylvania, watch for some of those that stream all the way over. speaking of that cold, it's not just going to settle in the northeast. look how deep it goes. the freeze alert, freeze warning included, goes to lake city, florida. the feels like down there wind chills around freezing by tomorrow morning, george. >> okay, ginger. thank you very much. now to an abc news exclusive. new details in what former vice president pence told investigators about his interaction with former president trump leading up to january 6th as he was pressured to overturn the election

results. chief washington correspondent jon karl is here with the story. good morning, jon. >> good morning, george. there is perhaps no testimony more eagerly awaited in the federal election interference case against donald trump than that of his vice president, mike pence. now abc news has learned what pence has told investigators and what he can be expected to say when he takes the stand in a trial that is now scheduled to start early next year. when everything else had failed, donald trump turned to his vice president to overturn the election on january 6th, 2021. >> i hope mike is going to do the right thing. if mike pence does the right thing, we win the election. all vice president pence has to do is send it back to the states to recertify and we become president. >> reporter: former vice president pence told investigators looking into the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol that donald trump had surrounded himself with, quote, crank lawyers and espoused

unamerican theories and almost pushed the country into a constitutional crisis. according to sources familiar with what pence told investigators, pence also told them he is sure he told trump that he had seen no evidence of voter fraud significant enough to change the results in a single state, according to sources familiar with the matter. ultimately, pence defied trump's demands when he played the ceremonial role vice presidents have played since thomas jefferson presided over the counting of votes in 1801. pence followed the rules but enraged trump supporters prompting chants of "hang mike pence" from some of those attacking the capitol. the sources tell abc that investigators asked the former vice president about hand written notes he had taken in the days leading up to january 6th that revealed pence had briefly decided not to preside over the certification of the election.

not feeling like i should attend electoral count, pence wrote in his notes. too many question, too many doubts, too hurtful to my friend. therefore, i am not going to participate in certification of election. he ultimately changed his mind, presiding over the official certification of joe biden's election victory because he felt it was his constitutional duty. pence, however, did do his part to raise expectations of trump's most ardent supporters for january 6th. he acknowledged to investigators, the sources tell abc news, that at the white house in late december 2020, he told a group of roughly 20 house republicans to, quote, get your evidence together and assured them, quote, we will get our day in congress. the republicans at the meeting erupted in applause. pence will likely be a key witness at the federal interference trial, testifying under oath on the witness stand, george.

that trial is now scheduled for early march, just over three months from now. >> we'll see if that schedule holds. thanks, jon. michael? now the latest on the spike in respiratory illnesses, with ten states now reporting high or very high activity. eva pilgrim is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. doctors offices and emergency rooms are seeing a flood of patients with respiratory illnesses. ten states, new york city and puerto rico reporting high or very high activity. the orange and dark red colors on this map show areas with the highest concentration reporting the flu, covid, rsv or the common cold. symptoms include fever plus a cough and/or sore throat. flu and covid hospitalizations are highest among people over 65 while most rsv patients are children. so here's the deal. it's typical for cases to spike in the south before moving north. experts recommend staying up to date with vaccinations. everyone over 6 months old can get an updated covid and flu vaccine.

rsv shots are available for those over 60, pregnant women and infants under 8 months old. robin? >> thank you. now to the airline passenger who opened an emergency door, jumped off the wing of a plane while it sat on the tarmac in new orleans. victor oquendo has the story. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this all happened on the busiest day in tsa history. this morning we're hearing from passengers who called the experience terrifying and chaotic. this morning chaos on board a southwest airlines flight, panicked passengers rushing off the plane at the airport in new orleans. >> we got a situation here. >> reporter: authorities say a man opened the over wing emergency exit and jumped onto the wing as the plane was still on the jet way. passengers told to get off. >> just a terrifying experience. everyone was overwhelmed. the anxiety, the panic, you could feel it. people ultimately were trampled,

injured trying to exit the plane. >> reporter: you can see the open emergency exit above the wing in this photo. >> did someone jump off? >> reporter: watch this video from inside the terminal. >> there he is, right there. >> reporter: showing the man being pulled out of a service truck on the tarmac. ground personnel holding him until authorities arrived. it happened on sunday. the busiest day in tsa history. nearly 3 million people screened. southwest flight 3172 was still preparing to depart for atlanta around 7:40 p.m. with 139 passengers on board when the man opened the door. atlanta business mom laquisha martin near the front of the plane. >> it was really, really crazy and a lot of chaos. >> reporter: passengers can only open those doors in an emergency. that man was not arrested. instead, he was taken to the hospital. authorities saying he suffered some kind of mental health crisis. guys?

she's here live in times square. we're gonna catch up with her in our next hour. >> always a great guest. following a lot of headlines including the cold blast most of the u.s. is experiencing the coldest air of the season. in the midwest and great lakes, wind chills are near zero. it is moving east and plunging to the gulf coast where frost and freeze alerts have been issued as far as gainesesville, florida. a suspect is in custody with the connection of a shooting in vermont. the 48-year-old is charged with three counts of second degree attempted murder. he pleaded not guilty and is being held without bond. the three students were hospitalized. investigators are working to determine a motive. also overnight wall street journal reporter evan gershovich's detention has been extended a third time. he was accused of espionage in march. united states and gershovich's adamantly reject those charges. according to aaa gas prices have fallen for 60 consecutive days, the longest streak in a year.

tomorrow is the last day of this deal of cease fire, and we are very concerned. >> have you heard anything from the government, from any sources about their condition? >> not anything new, just what was published by the spokesman of the idf about a possibility of another group holding them hostage and not hamas. >> and we know that they're extending the cease fire now in the hopes that more hostages will be released. but you've received no word from the government that your family members are on that list? >> no, not from the government. not from anyone. we don't know if there's a list, you know, of all the names of the children. we are completely at lost. >> what is your message to the israeli government and the united states government right now?

>> i do appreciate all the efforts of the united states government for creating that deal initially. i do hope they are doing everything they can to bring back. >> would you support a deal for all palestinian prisoners to be released in return for the hostages? >> that's a really hard question. i must say i am -- all those hostages are fathers, mothers, injured people and, of course, my family members as well among them. there's no price for our loved ones. >> and what do you want people to know about your family members? >> i want them to know they are and always were people of peace, innocent civilians.

from your phone to another. it's called name drop. when you update to the latest system, you automatically get it. here's how it works. if you hold two iphones near each other you can easily share contact information on your phone. that has police in several states warning that it could lead to users, including children and the elderly accidentally sharing their contact information. the sheriff of oakland county michigan saying while tech savvy iphone users may be aware of the settings, many iphone users are not. we have seen people where they can inadvertently accept or trigger actions without knowledge to their consequences. we encourage you to check your settings, including this one, to limit exposure of your data. there's an easy fix for this. all you need is to turn off namedrop. all you have do is go to settings, then general, hit air drop where you will see a box that says bringing devices together.

from that mystery respiratory illness vexing vets nationwide. john and becky oliver say their 5-year-old golden retriever ike first got sick in september while on the road competing in dog shows. >> he really didn't exhibit any symptoms at the beginning, maybe a cough here or there. when they took his temperature at the emergency vet hospital in arizona, they said his fever was 105.3. his color wasn't good. >> reporter: ike developed pneumonia and spent five days in the hospital before they moved him to a vet clinic closer to home. the family bracing for the worst when becky said she got a message from a woman in the dog show community about a potential treatment. a powerful antibiotic. >> they are saying, try this. the vet at first was like, oh, no, no, no that's an extremely strong antibiotic, a last ditch effort antibiotic. and then the veterinarian said,
