coast of japan. >> officials say the osprey aircraft was carrying eight people when it crashed off yakushima island. at least one person has been found along with debris from the crash, but there was no immediate word on the fate of the seven others or the condition of that person found. the osprey, which flies like a plane and lands like a helicopter, has a patchy safety record. >> in august, three marines died when an osprey went down in australia. the cause of that crash is still under investigation and last year, an osprey kill crashed in california, killing five marines. an investigation blamed mechanical failure. as for today's crash, witnesses report seeing the ospreys left engine on fire. we, of course, will bring you more details as we get them. >> now to our other top story in the middle east. the cease fire between israel and hamas is set to expire today. talks are underway in hopes of extending the truce during which dozens of hostages have been freed. but so far, only one american has been released, raising questions about whether hamas is using american hostages as a bargaining chip. abc's justin

finch is here now with the very latest. justin, good morning. >> good morning, andrew. the white house is hopeful israel and hamas will extend the truce to free more hostages. the cia director has been holding high level talks in the region overnight. hamas reportedly gave israel a new list of hostages expected to be released today before the temporary ceasefire is set to expire. hamas handed over 12 hostages yesterday, including 17 year old mia lindberg and her dog. both taken by militants on october 7th. the fbi believes nine us citizens are still being held, but it's unclear where or which militant group is holding them. the white house says there's no indication that hamas is holding the americans for leverage. >> there's no indication that hamas is trying to play some sort of game here in terms of the americans. we can't just assume that hamas has ready

access to everybody in a moment's notice in exchange for the hamas hostages. >> israel freed dozens more of palestinian men, women and teenage prisoners. as the cease fire is also allowing for more aid to enter gaza, including 54,000 pounds of medical and food supplies from the us. the un estimates nearly half of all homes in gaza have been damaged or destroyed. one family set a small fire in the ruins of their home. >> and this this man says his pregnant wife is due in the coming days. >> but with a lack of health and sanity services. the world health organization warns more people could soon die from disease in gaza than from the bombings. nearly 2 million people have been displaced in gaza. and once the fighting resumes, the us is warning israel to fight in a more targeted way to avoid displacing even more palestinians. rhiannon justin, thank you for that. >> millions of americans from

the northeast all the way down to the deep south are waking up to the coldest air of the season, up to 30in of lake effect snow fell in upstate new york. windchills are in the teens as far as the mid-atlantic with freeze alerts as far south as florida. meanwhile, yesterday, look at this snow near cleveland was blamed for this highway pileup involving more than a dozen vehicles. and in washington, the national christmas tree toppled over in wind gusts up to 40mph. but tomorrow's lighting is expected to go ahead as scheduled. they have got that tree back upright. we will check today's forecast in just a few moments. >> the house is set to vote by tomorrow on whether to expel jorge santos from congress. santos remains defiant after the ethics committee found he stole from his campaign and spent the money on botox and vacations. >> as i think we can all agree that due process matters and that we should all be very concerned about the way that we are conducting this process. and to set the record straight and put this in the record, i will

not be resigning. >> well, santos has also pleaded not guilty to 23 federal charges, including wire fraud and identity theft. >> and now to the race for president and what many political pundits are calling the race for second place in the republican primary. nikki haley getting a new boost as ron desantis prepares for a highly unusual debate with the democrat. abc's lionel moise explains this morning a boost for former south carolina governor nikki haley and her quest for the white house. >> in every poll we beat bid by 10 to 13 points. yeah afp, the political advocacy group founded by the billionaire koch brothers, is throwing its support behind haley. we are now in second place in iowa, in second place in new hampshire and second place in south carolina.

once again in the spotlight. cnn has released excerpts from former congresswoman liz cheney's upcoming memoir, oath and honor, in which she claims one gop lawmaker during efforts to contest the 2020 election results, said, the things we do for the orange jesus referring to trump, cheney also recounts an exchange with former house speaker kevin mccarthy after he visited trump at mar a lago in the weeks after the capitol riot. cheney saying she asked mar a lago what the hell kevin mccarthy responding. they're really worried trump's not eating, so they asked me to come see him. cheney saying what? you went to mar a lago because trump's not eating. mccarthy saying, yeah, he's really depressed. going back to that, nikki haley endorsement by afp, the group says it has never engaged in a presidential election before, but wants to, quote, turn the page on the past it to make sure president biden and former president trump do not return to the white house.

emergency rooms and reschedule their surgeries. >> dramatic moments in court as convicted killer alec murdoch was sentenced for fraud. his victims confronting him face to face. and murdoch took the opportunity to deliver a familiar message. here's abc's andrea fujii disgraced south carolina attorney alec murdoch faced his victims in court as he was sentenced to 27 years for financial crimes because of what you did to me, i thank god for giving me strength to get through what i went through. >> murdoch, convicted earlier this year of killing his wife and son, pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering. >> he was accused of stealing nearly $12 million from his law firm, his clients and even his friends. >> i trusted you with everything and was going to break, but i got to ask you, what kind of animal are you, the family of murdoch's former housekeeper who died after falling at his home.
