world leaders once again negotiating an extension to a cease fire between israel and hamas. now at five, how the conflict in the middle east is impacting communities here in the bay area and college campuses across the country. >> a key endorsement in the race for the white house. the gop megadonor now backing nikki haley after months of name calling, social media jabs and posturing, governor newsom will be taking the debate stage this week to face off with florida governor ron desantis. a 90 day ban on street vending is now in place for parts of san francisco, but is it stopping people from selling stolen items ? some frustrated vendors are weighing in. our first order of

business, though, the rain has returned. you could see a live look outside right now from our golden gate camera in san francisco. it is rainy this morning. we're tracking the weather and we're watching the roads. >> good morning to you. it is wednesday, november 29th. i'm gloria rodriguez. >> let's begin with a check on the weather because i know when i was driving in, probably you guys do. it's raining out there. it's pretty heavy. >> yeah, it's heavy at times. and that'll create some slick conditions over the next 4 to 5 hours. here's a live doppler seven. we'll put it into the loop over the last hour and you can see those showers moving on shore. and you notice there are some pops of yellow in there. that's the more moderate rainfall we are tracking. so you see some pockets of moderate rain working through marin county over into the east bay. another line of showers working into san francisco over the next 30 minutes. and we will be in and out of the showers at least through about 10 a.m. this morning. so the abc7 storm impact scale is a level one light storm. we are tracking this morning with scattered showers, ice related downpours. it is creating slick roads certainly out there, ponding as

well and also low visibility as it's still dark outside until that sun comes up after 7 a.m. visibility will stay pretty low. here's future weather. we'll track those showers through 7 a.m. but watch what happens as we get towards 10:11 a.m. this system is going to pull away and we'll actually get some afternoon sunshine to finish out the day, but we'll take a closer look. we'll go on future weather, hour by hour, show you the chances of rain in your neighborhood coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with jobina and see how traffic's doing this morning. >> thank you, drew. good morning, everybody. so, yes, very slick out there. want to be mindful of spinouts. we're already seeing a couple come in from the chp right now. so a live look here from our golden gate bridge camera. lots of droplets. and then also our richmond-san rafael bridge camera, where we still have this ongoing sigalert tons of rain droplets to the point where we can't really make out the traffic. well here on this camera. then i mentioned those spinouts. we typically see that with conditions like this. we're following one right now in castro valley, westbound 580 past eden canyon road. at the moment, there's no major slowdown. >> thanks for being a new

developments. a six day cease fire between israel and hamas is set to expire today. this morning, cia director bill burns is in the middle east in hopes of negotiating another extension to the cease fire and the release of more hostages. israel says there are now 161 people being held hostage in gaza after hamas released 12 more people yesterday. that includes a 17 year old, mia lindberg and her dog. they both survived 50 days of captivity. so far. hamas released one american hostage. nine others are still being held captive. >> there's no indication that hamas is trying to play some sort of game here in terms of the americans. we can't just assume that hamas has ready access to everybody in a moment's notice. >> more aid has flowed into gaza. officials say 54,000 pounds of aid from the us arrived this week with more to follow. >> in the east bay, a chaotic scene at last night's berkeley city council meeting. protesters

interrupted the proceedings demanding the council pass a resolution calling for a permanent cease fire in gaza. council members left the chamber and went to a separate room away from the public. berkeley's mayor released a statement opposing a resolution saying it will not end the violence in the middle east and will only increase hatred at home. a new lawsuit is accusing uc berkeley's law school of allowing the spread of anti-semitism on campus. according to the chronicle. while the lawsuit was brought forward by a zionist group that cited a 2022 policy by the campus group law students for justice in palestine, saying it would not invite pro-zionist speakers, us zionists believe that jewish people have an ancestral right to land in israel. the lawsuit asks a judge to prohibit the university from recognizing any organized action that excludes jewish people. the student group says it does not exclude jewish people or zionists, only pro-zionist speakers, a uc berkeley spokesperson told the chronicle

that the university is committed to confronting anti-semitism and supporting jewish students, faculty and staff. next week, a presidents from some of the most elite colleges in the country will testify before congress about anti-semitism on campus. that includes a president from harvard, mit and the university of pennsylvania. tensions have surged at some schools after last month's attack on israel by hamas. some lawmakers want to hold school officials accountable. many universities leaders are struggling to balance protecting students and allowing expression of all opinions. >> in san francisco, street vendors with and without permits are not allowed to sell. on the sidewalks of mission street for the next 88 days. but some vendors say that isn't stopping the sale of stolen goods on the streets. abc7 news reporter lena howland live at city hall this morning with some of these comments from frustrated vendors. lena reggie while some of the sidewalks have been

cleaned up, many street vendors told us that the illegal fencing operations the city is trying to put a stop to are actually still happening. >> take a look. one vendor who was selling on 24th street up until last week is now documenting what's happening on the area where he used to set up shop at 840 yesterday morning. he captured people pulling merchandise out of suitcases and selling them on the sidewalks. when we showed up several hours later, 24th street was clean, no vendors in sight and public works inspectors began to show up with sfpd turns out when these videos were shot, it was before inspectors began their patrol. we feel very disappointed. >> these vendors, we are not selling right here, right now on the street. but all the vendors, they are on the street. so we one, we demanding more actions from the city. >> a spokesperson for san francisco public works said they will be asking vendors to pack up and leave between the hours of nine in the morning to eight

at night and 8 to 4 on weekends. if they don't leave, they'll be cited with a notice of violation, which carries fines of 100 to $1000, depending on how many times people have been warned. but off camera, a public works public works inspector told us that unpermitted vendors leave as soon as they see those inspectors coming. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you so much. a prime time debate between the governors of california and florida happens tomorrow. governor gavin newsom will go one on one against florida governor ron desantis in a highly anticipated spectacle. abc's seven news reporter tim johns explains what each of these fierce rivals has to gain. >> perhaps one of the most unusual debates of the 2024 election cycle is set to unfold thursday after months of anticipation, california governor gavin newsom and florida governor ron desantis will meet for a 90 minute battle. >> they're able to use their opponent as a foil, right?

newsom can use desantis to play to his base and talk about how progressive he is and how well california is doing against florida. and then desantis is going to do the same thing with newsom. >> local democrats say newsom is likely to hit desantis on issues like abortion and lgbtq rights, while also touting california's strong tech based economy. they tell me the governor will also try to be an advocate for president biden. >> when we're talking about providing the basics like health care, infrastructure for new jobs, energy. >> those are the things that we have really focused on in california and having, you know, the fifth largest economy in the world on the other side of the aisle. >> desantis supporter say the florida governor will attack newsom for things like california's declining population and its drug and homelessness crises. they believe the debate is a good way to showcase desantis. florida model and gain momentum for his current presidential campaign. >> the blueprint that he has in florida seems to be working. the economy is good down there. you

know, he's protecting children in schools from what he believes is, you know, not proper to be teaching them. while both newsom and desantis are expected to talk about the main issues of the 2024 election, many experts believe this debate is about a lot more than just that. >> they say it's a chance for both of them to solidify their long term political goals. >> most likely, they're not thinking about running against each other in 2024, but maybe next time, right? maybe sometime down the line, no matter what side of the political spectrum you may be on, many think this debate will be one worth watching. i think it might be entertaining just because they are so different in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> your voice, your vote and a major endorsement for republican presidential candidate nikki haley. jobina is tracking that from the live desk. thank you, reggie. >> former south carolina governor nikki haley has just been endorsed by the americans for prosperity, or afp. afp action is the political advocacy group backed by billionaire

charles koch. filings show the group has already raised more than $70 million, 25 million coming from himself and another 25 million from one of his nonprofit groups. afp action believes haley can win independent and moderate voters, something many analysts say frontrunner donald trump has no chance of winning. >> we are now in second place in iowa, the second place in new hampshire and second place in south carolina. one more fellow we got to catch up to abc news partner fivethirtyeight shows trump is leading the republican primary by more than 40. >> those numbers come after skipping debates. and of course, facing multiple criminal cases as well. afp action says it's never engaged in a presidential election before, but it wants to , quote, turn the page on the past to make sure president biden and former president trump

don't return to the white house. hey, jobina 510 this morning, a live look outside. >> and this is our south beach camera pointing towards the bay bridge. and you can see we do have rain on the lens. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. you could see low pressure is spinning down our coastline this morning and we're getting brushed by these bands of light to moderate showers over the next couple of hours between nine and 10 a.m. that's when the showers hours will fade away. so we're within the system for the next 4 to 5 hours. you can clearly see on live doppler seven, we'll press in a little bit tighter down to street level where you see these brighter colors through richmond, berkeley, hercules as well. that's more moderate showers. the downpours that are crossing through the region. this is all pushing off to the north and east. some light rain falling right now from concord to walnut creek. certainly highway four is wet this morning. another band of rain moving on shore. this moving into the city over the next 30 minutes. it's quite wet along the peninsula this morning. and we do have some light to moderate showers in the south bay as well. a downpour

decide in march if appointed officials can be recalled. and now there's confusion about whether this could impact the current effort to recall district attorney pamela price. >> it would be only allowing the county supervisor to fire or to let go of any non-elected. so it doesn't impact impact a whole lot of what we are doing. okay but it's, you know, bringing so much confusion. >> carl chan is with safe or save alameda for everyone and the coalition is leading the effort to recall price yesterday day they rallied at the board of supervisors office demanding no changes be made. while the recall campaign is underway. one issue, though, is collecting signatures, chan says that state law allows anyone over the age of 18 to collect signatures on the recall. but county rules are different. the attorney representing d.r. price thinks the board of supervisors should invalidate date any and all signatures collected by people who are not registered to vote

in alameda county to be registered voters in the county. >> it's pretty basic and that law is on the books. it's going to be on the books for the foreseeable future, regardless of what happens with this charter amendment. >> the attorney says price will consider all legal options to enforce the county laws. >> the oakland baller says that's the name of the new minor league baseball team set to start playing in oakland this spring. oakland natives paul friedman and brian carmel held a news conference yesterday to announce the team. the idea for this team started in june. they won a baseball fans to still be able to root for someone in oakland. the oakland ballers will be playing in the pioneer league. >> we identified the league that we wanted to join being the pioneer league, which has its roots in 1939. and then we worked to build a community to support us because we really believe at the end of the day that sports teams are about

community. they're about bringing community together. >> the oakland bees will likely play at laney college. >> the oakland ballers. i like that. well, the bay area's tallest tree will light up tonight in san francisco chase center is hosting a tree lighting ceremony at its thrive city outdoor plaza. it's tonight at 5:00. the lights on the 90 foot tree will turn on. the celebration will also include the warriors dance team choirs, food and drinks to get everyone in the holiday spirit. another celebration will be held on the first night of hanukkah, and that is next thursday. christmas in the parks drive thru light show returns to san jose tonight from your car, you can experience the holiday light show with music. >> organizers say these tickets help fund the free walking christmas in the park event in downtown every year, tickets are 30 bucks for each car, and that drive through light show is available until january 1st. >> i love this time of year. there's so much cool stuff going on out here. >> yeah, a lot to do, too. weather this morning. not the

greatest. i know. the drive this morning is going to be a little bit slower, maybe a couple extra minutes needed. get where you're going. so here's your commute weather for today. the morning rush. use caution. we have slick roads. we have low visibility out there. we have showers and isolated downpours, showers moving through and we'll keep showers in the forecast through about 10 a.m. this morning for the evening rush. it's a completely different story. the showers are done. we'll have totally dry roads. so you shouldn't have any issues when it comes to the weather for the back half of the commute, whether you're going home or going out to other places later on tonight. this morning, though , here's a live look from our sfo camera. clearly, you can see it is wet out there this morning . here's your day planner. by 9 a.m, those showers are starting to fade, but we still have those showers in the forecast. by noon, we're pretty much done. we're turning off the faucet. we have drier skies, but we'll keep that cloud cover, partly cloudy skies by the afternoon. temperatures limited to the low to mid 60s for the most part. and then by 9 p.m, we'll keep those temperatures cooling off into the 40s and into the 50s

atmospheric administration says this year we had 20 named storms and that is the fourth most on record. the only names that are remaining on their list for this year are vince and whitney. an average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. >> as a san francisco based company is working to launch a drug that could make your dog live longer and a healthier life. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes tells us how this would work. >> meet zeus, a shy but playful half pit, half lab, pure mabbayad said he's a loving part of his family and wants to be around for a long time. only 11 months. >> i want him to live longer. >> san francisco based loyal is working to extend the lives of dogs. ceo celine halawa says some of the largest breeds aren't living as long due to years of selective breeding. >> and that was super effective at creating this huge variety within the species of what a dog can look like and behave like. but it also caused genetic mistakes, she says.

>> those mistakes see large and giant breed dogs aging up to two times faster than smaller ones, ultimately leading to a shorter lifespan. loyal's drug known right now as loi one aims to change that, but the drug is doing is once the dog is fully grown, it's compensating for this genetic mistake and to kind of make them more similar to like a medium sized dog biologically to slow the rate of aging, to extend their healthy lifespan. >> loi one would be in the form of a routine injection. >> work is still being done to determine just how much longer it could extend a dog's life. but tuesday, the company announced that the fda gave it a technical section complete. that means that the fda agrees with the data loyal, provided that shows the drug's effectiveness is a major step forward, but not past the finish line just yet. we can't sell the drug yet. >> you can't go ask your vet about it yet. i'm sorry. we still have to finish manufacturing and safety. but you know, does it work? is you know, kind of historically the most challenging and most complex aspect of getting a drug

mission street for the next 88 days. but some vendors say that is not stopping the sale of stolen goods on the streets. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at city hall right now with the response from the city's public works department. good morning, lena. >> good morning, gloria. the public works department told us that they are focused on monitoring and enforcing this ban, but only in specific working hours, which are not 24 hours a day at 840 yesterday morning, one vendor who was selling on 24th street up until last week captured these images of people pulling merchandise out of suitcases and selling them on the sidewalks. when we showed up several hours later, 24th street was clean. no vendors in sight. and public works inspect began to show up with sfpd. turns out when these videos were shot, it was before inspect fighters began their patrol for the day. >> weekdays. we're there right now from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m,

although we're looking to see if we can extend that a little bit. it's really dependent on resources. and then on weekends we're out there from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. so outside of those hours, people can go out there and continue vending. >> so what the city is going to do is really monitor this. >> is it working during these hours and several bart plazas are also part of the ban. >> in the past, they have been fencing operation hotspots on the phone, the bart police commander confirmed they are now adding extra resources to the area. but many street vendors trying to do this the right way say it's not fair that unpermitted vendors get to set up shop when inspectors are not around. and now street vendors who are asked to leave and refuse to do so could be facing fines between $100 and $1,000. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. thank you, lena. >> san francisco board of supervisors voted to pass a measure that will allow voters to weigh in on the city's police staffing. according to the

chronicle, after weeks of heated disagreements, the board voted 6 to 5 in favor of that legislation. voters will be able to determine the minimum level of police staffing. this comes as sfpd struggles to fill vacant positions. the measure will be on the march ballot for the 2024 presidential primary election. san francisco is facing a drug crisis. it is very likely by the end of this year we will see the deadliest year for overdose deaths. we have ever seen in this city. and abc7 news we cover the topic often because we are committed to finding solutions to help build a better bay area. all this week abc7 news will be taking a closer look at the issues impact the city. our in-depth coverage culminates with take action san francisco, a town hall event. it is happening monday. that's when abc7 will host this event. one hour of direct questions and answers with mayor london breed, police chief bill scott and district attorney brooke jenkins

right now. an incident report is due to the county tomorrow. >> developing news, a us military aircraft with six people on board has crashed off of southern japan. officials say japan's coast guard found a person in debris from the osprey in the ocean near yakushima yakushima island. sadly that person died at the hospital. no word yet on the status of the other five crew members. japan is vice defense minister said that the aircraft had attempted an emergency sea landing before it went down. so here's what an osprey looks like. it's a hybrid aircraft that takes off and lands like a helicopter. but during flight, it can rotate its propellers forward and cruise much faster like an airplane. >> new developments, the two day cease fire extension in the israel-hamas war is set to expire today. this comes after both israeli hostages and hamas prisoners were released yesterday and jobina the us and the world are now watching and waiting to see if another

lot of our area roads that could lead to some spin outs. jobina is tracking all of that this morning. it is busy on live doppler seven. this is a level one light storm we are tracking and you could see the showers moving onshore from a west to east. fashion what we're watching, there's this area of low pressure for offshore. it's not going to move onshore. what it's doing, it's brushing bias as it travels south. so we're kind of getting these outer bands of rainfall from this low and it's moving pretty quickly. so this rain is only lasting until about 10 a.m. this morning. but certainly it is impacting the wednesday morning commute on the abc seven storm impact scale. it is a level one this morning for those showers and isolated downpours leading to slick travel and low visibility. here's future weather by 7 a.m. we're seeing less in the way of downpours, but still scattered showers out there. but look what happens by 10 a.m, the showers are pretty much over. and that is going to lead to a dry afternoon with some peeks of sunshine. additional rainfall this morning. most areas picking up less than a quarter of an inch of rain with this quick moving system, we do have another chance of rain on the seven day

highway early yesterday morning. authorities say that the young campers were checked out at the site. two had to go to the hospital. the western propane gas association tells abc7 news that a company called mcphail fuel provided the propane equipment to the camp. the president of the gas association says they believe a faulty space heater may be to blame. >> it is the end of an era on bart. today is the last day you can use paper tickets starting tomorrow. you're going to need a clipper card. if you have

here's sfo this morning. it is wet out there. we are seeing showers moving through. and here's how the day shapes up. the showers will linger through about 10 a.m. so by 9 a.m. on the day planner, the showers are fading. they're still there. we're seeing less of them out there. and then you can see by lunchtime and into the afternoon, we're totally done with the showers. we'll see some peeks of sunshine to finish out the day. but we are seeing those issues this morning with those showers moving through. it's creating low visibility, slick roads. we're seeing spinouts out there. so add a couple of extra minutes to the commute, distance to the cars in front of you. this low pressure is sliding right down the coastline. so we're getting brushed by it. we're not seeing it move on shore and it's moving pretty quickly. so that's why the showers are going to wrap up by about 10 a.m. but this morning, you could see we have scattered showers, some isolated downpours out there with those pops of yellow on your screen. a really good idea. you can download the abc7 news app there. we have live doppler seven like the one you're seeing on your screen right now. you can take it with you as you go about your morning commute and track where those showers are moving. so for the commute today, the morning rush
