with the latest track on the new cross country storm. but first rob marciano start us off in snowy upstate new york. good morning, rob. >> reporter: hi. good morning, michael. we got hit with another thumping of snow overnight about 10 inches on top of what we saw yesterday, shrouding much of town hall here in richmond. look at this. get into the deeper stuff, getting closer to 2 feet. the band did shift to syracuse, caused trouble down there during rush hour. came back through. hopefully, it's done. look at these towers. they are completely buried. it will take work to get these people back on their feet. nearly two feet of snow fell here. i-81 a mess. many highways around the great lakes a dicey drive this morning. overnight, snow blanketing the great lakes region. more than 13 inches falling in parts of ohio. >> coming off the lake. it's coming strong here. >> reporter: officials blaming

snow and icy conditions for a massive multicar pileup outside cleveland. wrecked cars and tractor trailers blocking off parts of the highway. >> it's just a mess. >> reporter: millions waking up to frigid temperatures, the coldest air of the season, felt from florida to maine. crews working around the clock to keep roads passable in upstate new york. near whiteout conditions at the airport in rochester. planes barely visible on the tarmac, roofs collapsing under the weight of the snow. nearly two feet falling in syracuse and it's not over yet. this time lapse shows the snow blowing in. at one point you can't see anything. in wisconsin, pancakes of ice sloshing against each other as temperatures plummet to zero overnight. and in the nation's capital, strong winds taking down the national christmas tree. crews eventually hoisting it back up, just days before the president was set to light it. no fatalities to report with this storm, thankfully. thankfully, this is done. but the cold air all the way down to the deep south.

freeze warnings are up again for much of the florida panhandle. crops in danger there. but there will be a good bounce back. look at these numbers. we'll get back into the 40s, 50s, 60s and florida into the 80s by friday moves in. we're not even close to winter. more cold air is coming. >> it sure feels like we're in winter. let's go to ginger. a new storm coming, ginger? >> yes. we've already got that started up in the bay area here in this state. we even had freeze warnings in the sierra nevada. we're all watching this new storm that's gonna come through, hit the southern rockies with a considerable amount. you'll want to watch for severe storms with pretty high potential of creating tornados. anyone from detroit to lake charles, even dallas ft. worth could see thunderstorm activity into southeast oklahoma. that rain on top of all the lake

effect snow you just saw rob standing in will start to come down as we kick off the weekend along that warm front, it will be a wet one. robin? >> you'll be watching it for us. thank you, ginger. breaking news overnight. a u.s. military aircraft crashed off the coast of southern japan. it was carrying six people. one person has been found so far. let's go to our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz with more. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. this morning japanese coast guard boats and helicopters are desperately searching for survivors of this crash. there were six on board. one, according to the japanese, has been confirmed deceased and reports that others have been pulled from the water. it was an osprey that went down, the aircraft that has a tilt rotor so it can fly like a fixed wing airplane or hand vertically like a helicopter. this osprey went down in broad daylight on a clear day near a

small japanese island in southwest japan. japan's defense minister saying there were reports of an engine on fire before the aircraft made what they call an emergency water landing. the osprey has a troubled past. in august, three marines were killed in an osprey crash during an exercise in australia. last year nine marines were killed in osprey, five in a training mission in california and four others in norway during nato exercises. clearly something the military will be taking a much closer look at after this overnight crash. guys? >> definitely should take a look at that, martha. thank you very much. we're going to turn to the latest on the israel/hamas war as they enter the final day of a cease fire deal, with negotiators working to extend it. matt gutman is on the scene in israel after a dozen more hostages were released. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. there's a sixth batch of hostages expected to be released tonight, they may be the final hostages released unless negotiators in qatar working around the clock

can hammer out an extension to this deal. the big question, will any of the nine american citizens still believed held in gaza be on that list? we understand that two of them are women, who should be eligible. one in her 40s, one in her 70s. this morning a fifth batch of hostages walked by hamas gunmen to those red cross vans into freedom as israel and hamas prepare for what could be the final day of the cease fire. hamas releasing this footage showing the 12 hostages handed over. one woman seen in a wheelchair, 17-year-old mia leeburg clutching her dog bella. they've been together for nearly two months in captivity and she was still in her arms overnight in an israeli hospital. mia was kidnapped with her mother. the two seen together after the release, their heads pressed together. those red cross vans squeezing through crowds near gaza's border with egypt after crossing into israel. amidst jubilation of well wishers for dozens of hostages returned the past week, the realization by families that their loved ones may be back, but they're not the same.

diago telling me his nieces seen here pushed into a wheelchair by the red cross, each nearly lost 25 pounds living on a single piece of bread a day. thomas hamm thought his 9-year-old daughter had been killed only to learn weeks later she had been captured by hamas. the homecoming he told cnn not what he expected. >> all of a sudden the daughter, the door opened up and she just ran, just like i imagined it. running together. i squeezed. i probably squeezed too hard. she's lost a lot of body weight. >> reporter: overnight hamas sending israel the final list of releases. not on it the youngest hostage, 10-month-old qafir and ariel, along with their mother were kidnapped by hamas october 7th in tel aviv a rally demanding their release and the fear of family members it might never happen.

have any of them seen or heard anything? >> no. no one saw them. we hope for something, you know? something to hold on to. a proof of life. we don't know if they're alive. every day for us that we wait here and we anticipate, it's another day for them to be held captive. >> reporter: the family of dita released tuesday telling abc news the 84-year-old is under going medical evaluations but is in good spirits. >> our sense is that she's in good hands and they are being very careful. >> she is a strong lady. she will overcome it. >> reporter: ramon also among those taken. her husband is still in captivity. >> we were ecstatic but the joy only lasts a few minutes because then you realize she was

released without her husband. >> reporter: and the growing question, where are the nine americans still believed held in gaza, two women and seven men? the only american released since the truce began 4-year-old abigail, who was freed by the militant group over the weekend and was just released from israeli hospital following checkups. as part of the deal to bring that batch of 12 hostages home, israel agreed to release 30 palestinian prisoners all women and teens. with the possibility of the war resuming in gaza, the u.n. says 1.8 million remain displaced, more than the population of philadelphia. families forced to cook and clean in wintry outdoors amidst the bombed out ruins. now with the cease fire entering its sixth day, much needed humanitarian aid is pouring into the region, including 54,000 pounds of medical supplies and food from the u.s. but officials are warning it's not enough.

and the u.n. secretary-general just this morning warning about those dire conditions in gaza, soaring infectious diseases there, and saying in the coming months, it's possible more gazans will die from infectious diseases than from bombings there. robin? >> appreciate your reporting. we're going to the west bank. tom soufi-burridge is there the scene. we understand you spoke with some of the palestinians freed from israel. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. the return of more palestinian prisoners who have been freed from israeli prisons as part of the agreement to release israeli hostages is being celebrated here across the west bank. most of those palestinians freed so far by israel are women and teenage boys. the expectation is that more will be released tonight. overnight crowds celebrating, welcoming more palestinians freed from israeli jails. israel releasing 30 women and teenage boys last night.

abc news on the scene as they were bussed into the west bank. >> you can see people here running to meet that bus carrying the new group of palestinian prisoners. this clearly feels like a giant celebration. >> reporter: in total, 180 palestinians now set freed since friday when that cease fire in gaza kicked in. israel expected to release more palestinian prisoners tonight, with hamas now pushing to extend the cease fire for a further four days according to israeli media. some of the palestinians released had been convicted by israeli courts for terrorism related offenses. others were being held without trial. one of those released last night calls herself a political activist, resisting israel's occupation. >> israel accuses you of supporting terrorism. how do you respond? palestinian people have the right to fight, she tells me. this is our land and i want to be free.

two palestinian teens were killed here in the west bank tuesday in an israeli raid, say palestinian officials. there has been a spike in violence since that hamas terror attack and israel's invasion of gaza. george? >> okay, tom. thanks. let's get the view from the white house. mary bruce is there. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. the white house is hoping more americans will be released today but they're also blunt. they don't know how these lists are being compiled. the white house doesn't know where the remaining americans are being held, what condition they are in or who is even holding them, whether they are with hamas or another terrorist group. the white house though does say that they don't believe the americans are being used for leverage. the president has been deeply involved in all of this. the white house touting the president's role in negotiating this truce. they say this is working. they want to see this continue until all of the hostages are released. that is still a big unknown. the question is what comes next? the white house in its strongest warning yet is urging israel to far more targeted in its

approach to do more to prevent widespread displacement of palestinians in the south, to prevent this humanitarian crisis from worsening even further. the white house ramping up the pressure for israel to be more surgical in their approach going forward and to really think through carefully what comes next, george. >> mary bruce, thanks. to politics now. a big endorsement for nikki haley as she battles for the republican nomination, hoping to topple donald trump. she is now backed by the billionaire koch brothers. rachel scott is tracking the race. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a major endorsement for nikki haley. it comes at a critical time. we are just about 50 days from the first votes being cast in iowa. the political organization americans for prosperity action backed by the billionaire koch brothers throwing its support behind nikki haley saying it's time to turn away from donald trump and rally behind a candidate they believe can unite the party. the group has already raised $70 million, that could give haley even more momentum as she continues to rise in the polls and as other candidates

including ron desantis continue to slip. to be clear here, donald trump is still the far and away front runner, leading this pack by 40 points. he is also facing 91 charges so he could be spending more time in a courtroom than on the campaign trail, george. >> on capitol hill, they are closing in on that vote to expel george santos? >> reporter: yeah, that vote is expected to happen tomorrow. sources tell us the new house speaker mike johnson did speak to congressman george santos, urging him to consider all of his options including resigning. but santos is defiant. he says the only way that he is leaving congress is for his colleagues to vote him out, george. >> we'll see. robin? now to an aviation break through. for the first time ever, a transatlantic plane flew using only sustainable aviation fuel. you know our transportation correspondent gio benitez is all over this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. and it worked. this was a major milestone in reducing green house gas emissions from airplanes. take a look at this.

virgin galactic was just able to fly a boeing 787 dreamliner, so a huge plane, from london to new york tuesday using 100% sustainable fuel. much of it made from used cooking oil. the founder of the virgin group, richard branson, was on board. it's the first time a commercial flight has flown across the atlantic on 100% sustainable fuel. what's even more incredible is that it is a drop in fuel which means none of the equipment had to be changed. they just used this fuel instead of fossil jet fuel. it was two years ago when we were very brave on board the first domestic flight with 100% sustainable fuel with united airlines. we flew from chicago to d.c. one of the engines had fuel made from sugar water and corn. clearly, we landed safely. all of the equipment was the same, so virgin makes the point that electric and hydrogen technology on planes is decades away, but this fuel can actually be used right now. >> they didn't have to change anything with the engines? >> nothing at all.

following a lot of headlines including the coldest air of the season from florida to maine. freeze alerts have been issued along the gulf coast. there's a cross country storm on the move. the highest tornado threat will be from houston to waco texas tomorrow throughout the day. also former president jimmy carter made a rare public appearance at the memorial for his wife rosalynn. his wife of 77 years. dozens of political features including the bidens were on hand to pay their respects. the 99-year-old has been in hospice care since february. rosalynn carter's funeral service will be held today in her hometown of plains, georgia. billionaire mark cuban is selling a majority stake in the dallas mavericks. sources tell espn cuban is selling to meriam adelson in a deal that values the team at $3.5 billion. cuban bought the team in 2000 and has played a key role in its success including a championship in 2011. he will retain full control over basketball operations. adelson is the widow of sheldon adelson.

waking up to a 27 year sentence in south carolina state court for financial crimes to be served at the same time as his double life sentence for killing his wife and son. the disgraced lawyer pleading guilty to 22 state charges for stealing more than $12 million from his client, friends and even his family's law firm coming face to face with some of his victim, some overcome with emotion. >> because of what you did to me, i thank god for giving me strength to get through what i went through. >> reporter: some of the victim, the family of his long time housekeeper gloria saterfield who died after an apparent trip and fall accident at the murdaugh home. saterfield's son said murdaugh told them to sue him for insurance money. >> how you were able to profit from her death and cause unimaginable hurt to our family. >> reporter: but they say murdaugh instead pocketed most

of the settlement money himself. her son tony turning to speak face to face with murdaugh in court. >> you lied. you cheated. you stole. you betrayed me and my family and everybody else. and you caused my mom's death. >> reporter: the judge, who also presided over his murder trial, sentencing the once well-respected lawyer. >> it's so disappointing to see you again in this setting, and after imposing this sentence, your life will continue. i will turn the page and leave you behind. >> reporter: newman now recusing himself from the double murder case going forward as murdaugh seeks a retrial, claiming the court clerk tampered with the jury. murdaugh still insisting he didn't kill his wife and son. >> i would never hurt maggie and i would never hurt paul.

>> reporter: this 27 year sentence murdaugh will serve time behind bars no matter what happens in his murder case, which he is currently appealing. he is also awaiting sentencing in his federal financial crimes case, george. >> thank you very much. let's bring in dan abrams. 27 years. that's a life sentence. >> effectively a life sentence for him. and a stiff sentence for these types of crimes. as eva points out, this is connected to the federal case, right? in the sense that he's plead guilty to similar-ish charges if federal court. part of the deal is the 27 years will be served concurrently, meaning together. but he has to serve at least 85% of it before he's eligible for parole. in the state of south carolina, typically it would be much less time but because you're including the federal charges, you're now applying the much higher 85% as part of this plea agreement. so he's not eligible for at least almost 23 years. >> wow. long time. what about the victims' impact statements? how impactful was that?

did you expect him to speak? >> incredibly emotional statements, right? they didn't really make a difference, in terms of the sentence. the sentence had basically been negotiated ahead of time. i think they were very important, to hear from these people. for him to hear exactly what they suffered and what they endured. the only reason i wasn't that surprised that he spoke is because he testified in his own murder trial. and so i figured, okay. he's already testified in his murder trial. he's admitted to these financial crimes anyway. i wouldn't be surprised if he speaks. >> what chance does he have at getting a new murder trial? >> a very long shot. there are a lot of people are saying, this is the important one, because the murder case may get overturned. the murder case is very unlikely to get overturned. it is likely he is serving a life sentence on the murder plus the 27 years. so yes there's a pending appeal. yes that's still working its way through the system. no, it's not likely it's going to get overturned.

back now on gma with our favorite story of the morning. it's our cover story about a member of our gma family and her growing family. rebecca jarvis, her husband matt and big sister isabel just welcomed their son leo. i almost didn't recognize matt. rebecca is not letting him wear his trademark baseball cap this morning. [ laughter ] come on! it was not an easy journey for them. there they all are. we're gonna talk to them in a minute. but first rebecca and matt want to share their long road to bringing home baby leo. >> when i pictured our family, i always thought of my family, the family i grew up with, as one of two kids, my younger sister lauren and i are incredibly close. so as i thought about my future,

our future, i always envisioned that we would have two that we'd be a family of four. it has been a very long road for us for fertility, for pregnancy. i did ivf to get pregnant with isabel. before her, i had done seven rounds of ivf in order to have her. one of the hardest parts of our fertility journey is that there's never been a name. it's always been unexplained. i know now, having gone through this, that's the case for so many women. >> two years ago we had just experienced another miscarriage in the ivf journey and that catalyized the search for another round. >> i had just lost a pregnancy at five months. we looked at our doctors and said, what do we do?

it keeps happening. there's no telling whether we can be successful, whether i can maintain a successful pregnancy. our doctors said surrogacy is your best path forward. that was hard to hear, in a way. >> it was. >> at the time. >> we had never considered that. >> every time i got pregnant i would look at the world with rose colored glasses and i would imagine what life was gonna be like on the other side. and every time i lost a pregnancy, to have that taken away, was so tough.

so even in the surrogacy, i really did hold my breath for a very long time. i probably, in some ways to protect myself and my family, didn't want to feel that massive excitement and that massive joy until i really felt that it was truly a sure thing. but when i did allow myself to feel that way, it was truly the best feeling. to be able to look at matt and say, we are having a baby. we are having another baby. isabel is going to have a little brother. our family will be a family of four. >> as i was talking with a very good group of friends about our journey, i had mentioned one of the aspects of trepidation that my wife had was i won't be carrying the baby and how do i know i'll have a connection? somebody else is carrying our baby, i won't have that maternal connection.
