moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> a shift in aggression in the middle east from land to the sea. rebels who've been battling israeli forces fired today on a us navy destroyer. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lim. there are new details out tonight from the middle east about an attack on an american warship. us officials confirm that the uss carney shot down two drones today. officials say it was in response to attacks targeting the ship and several commercial vessels. there are no reports of injuries, but the drone attacks mark a major increase in maritime aggression in the israel-hamas war. a rebel group from yemen is taking responsibility, saying the ships were linked to israel and ignored their warnings. that same group has been targeting israel amid its war with hamas. now israel says it's expanding its ground operations to the whole of the gaza strip. they've also told civilians to leave

neighborhoods in the south where many fled in search of shelter the past few weeks. all of this just a day after israel said negotiations to free hostages taken by hamas reached a dead end. abc's ines de la cuarta has the latest. the israeli military says it's expanded ground operations to every part of the gaza strip. >> video released by israeli defense forces shows their massive operation underway in northern gaza since the start of the war. >> the idf has located 800 tunnel shafts and destroyed 500 of them in addition to many miles of tunnel routes under civilian areas. our soldiers are finding large quantities of weapons in those shafts. >> this renewed effort comes after the week long cease fire between israel and hamas came to an end. >> we're working at this literally by the hour. the national security council and all the way up the high levels of the administration to try to see hour by hour if we can get these discussions back going, going forward to see if we can get the pause back in place and

get the hostages out in gaza. >> the hamas run health ministry says at least 15,000 have been killed since the war began, with more than 700 killed and hundreds more injured in just the past two days. the hospital overwhelmed with patients as strikes once again ramp up. this man has lost his son, nephew and sister saying, we ask god to help our people stay strong. hamas is also firing at israel. the rockets seen intercepted in central israel. israel confirming hostage negotiations with hamas have reached a dead end. more than 130 of them still being held in gaza, including michael levy's brother, who has a two year old son. >> he lost his mother. that was murdered there and his father is kidnaped and is a hostage. now and for us, it's crucial to get him back and to and that almog will have a father. >> israeli officials are predicting a long war. they say once it ends, they plan to put a

about 50 dead salmon have been discovered over the last 30 days in the lower silver creek that flows underneath the 101 freeway. those numbers come from the salmon and steelhead restoration group. that group blames pollution, but also says the bridge design stops the salmon from migrating. >> the construction is disperses the water only makes it an inch deep and the fish get into under the bridge and it's 60 yards in a one inch of water. and then they find themselves they can't take the risk and they end up expiring underneath the bridge. >> valley water says it's committed to providing a healthy environment for the fish, but does not have control over the water flows in the creek. officials hope that more expected rain in the area will increase those flows naturally. well, the holiday shopping season is in full swing and small businesses in the bay area are looking for more of your shopping dollars. but in san francisco, two events this weekend are highlighting the

challenges some are facing at home, some crime to economic disparity in tourism. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has a tale of two neighborhoods this holiday season. >> a holiday winter wonderland on chinatown's grand avenue. san francisco firefighters distributing toys to kids in need. and this year, organizers say about 2000 families showed up. >> i think one of the issues that we see here living in san francisco, there's a lot of economic and social disparities that we need to address. but this is just something that we can do as an immediate solution to sprinkle a little bit of magic during the holidays. >> linda fong is giving back to the chinatown neighborhood where she grew up, where small businesses could now use a hand. >> chinatown has suffered. we have seen a downturn in tourism, for sure. >> tane chan owns the walk shop featuring lots of culinary gifts . chan is hopeful tourist and visitor traffic will bounce back to pre-pandemic levels. i think

then san francisco state university on tuesday. the union representing about 29,000 faculty members, is demanding a 12% raise. this year for

workers. csu is offering 15% over the next three years. alaska airlines is buying one of its biggest rivals. alaska air announced today it's acquiring hawaiian airlines for $1.9 billion. the deal, which needs government approval, comes after several months of negotiations. hawaiian ceo says both companies will keep their brands. the merger will also turn honolulu zoo into the company's second largest hub. that could enable greater international connectivity for west coast travelers. a warning tonight from the us secret service about so-called pig butchering scams. it's a type of crypto fraud and it's on the rise. the secret service says the scam originated in southeast asia and is spreading globally. the abc7 news i-team found out how hackers are specifically targeting silicon valley tech workers. i-team reporter stephanie sierra spoke with the secret service special agent about the impact here in the bay area.

>> the pig butchering scam, it's a type of romance scam that's a little more sophisticated in which criminals lure victims into a virtual relationship to build trust over time. eventually, the victim is convinced into investing in the cryptocurrency online. we expectation that the money's going to double or triple in a matter of days or even weeks. the victims take and monitor what they believe is a legitimate website, but it's actually fraud in which the victims believe their money is growing exponentially. at that point, they're kind of convinced, like, hey, at first they've got to pay a capital gains tax on it. so when they're out of money, they've got to go to family members or take additional loans. >> one victim we spoke with last year, a software developer, lost $1.3 million. are you continuing to see more cases like that? >> yeah, unfortunately, i just talked to a victim yesterday that lost $750,000. so we're probably seeing an average of 400 to 500,000 just locally here in our office. >> can you walk us through how

hackers are finding new ways to target victims in silicon valley ? >> yeah, i mean, there definitely increasing and growing in sophistication. so take like crack cracking.com. it's a good legitimate you know, exchange operating here in the us. however, a fictitious website that we just discovered on a friday is cracking dot com and we came across was galaxy dot dot net. if you click actually the download button, it will actually take you to what appears to be like the app store. however, it's not. it's just kind of sending you to another website that was abc seven news. >> stephanie sierra reporting. secret service agent broad street says one way to check the legitimacy of the website is to do an internet search for the name. if a scam advisory already exists, it should come up in your search. now if you have a story for the i-team, you can call this number. it's on your screen. you can also go to abc7,

the national weather service says starting tomorrow afternoon, large waves could sweep across northwest facing beaches. you may remember just last weekend, a five year old girl died and her grandfather went missing after being swept away by large waves on halfmoon

bay. his body was not recovered. well, not only do we have to contend with this, but also some really funky weather this week. yeah we're going to certainly see a bit of a warm up, but we have a little more rain coming back into the forecast, which is, of course, what we need and want for not only us, but the snowpack and we'll get to that in just a moment. >> but first, things first. picking up on that beach hazard statement monday afternoon through monday night, those sneaker waves definitely an energetic swell heading to the shoreline. and that's going to create some dangerous conditions all throughout the day tomorrow. and with some afternoon sun. keep that in mind for sure. look at live doppler seven and notice the activity into the pacific northwest. a lot of cloud cover throughout the day today. that early sunset, 450. current numbers in the upper 50s, san francisco, oakland, 59 in mountain view is 62. in san jose . and a look from mt. tam where we had the muggy conditions and boys some rain this morning anywhere from a quarter to a half inch of rain for mill valley through parts of marin

county, 59. santa rosa, 61 novato and 61 in concord. so looking at some cloudy skies, fog forming throughout the overnight hours into your monday and increasing sunshine warmth throughout the afternoon tuesday looks to be the warmest day of the week and then rain returning for the north bay late tuesday. wednesday looks to be a rainy day impacting your wednesday morning commute. so here we are early tomorrow. the fog fades away for some sunshine. tuesday, we'll get into increasing clouds or high clouds throughout the afternoon. and then late tuesday, we'll begin to see some rain move into the north bay. we're stopping this at 930 on wednesday. and notice, just missing that morning commute. but throughout the day, we'll see the steadiest rain in the north bay looking at maybe a quarter to a third of an inch of rain there and lesser amounts as you move to the south and east. so we're looking at once again, rain favoring the north bay. not a whole lot here. and perhaps

the event was hosted at calabash restaurant and included vendors, entertainment and food. it was fun for the entire family along with the day of exciting activities organized leaders say the event was an opportunity to connect with the community. the mission of the organization is to advance economic growth and strengthen the black business community. well, finally, now, legendary rock band kiss bid farewell to the stage last night. but did they really? it was the final show of their farewell tour at madison square garden in new york city. now, during their encore, the band would leave the stage and
