>> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news >> a shift in aggression in the middle east from land to the sea. rebels who've been battling israeli forces fired today on a us navy destroyer. the. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. there are new details tonight out of the middle east about an attack on an american warship. us officials confirm the uss carney shot down two drones today. officials say it was in response to attacks targeting the ship and several commercial vessels. there are no reports of injuries, but the drone attacks mark a major increase in maritime aggression in the israel-hamas war. a rebel group from yemen is taking responsibility, saying the ships were linked to israel and ignored their warnings. that same group has been targeting israel amid its war with hamas. now israel says it's expanding its ground operations to the entire of the gaza strip. they

also told civilians to leave neighborhoods in the south where many fled in search of shelter. the past few weeks. all of this a day after israel said negotiations to free hostages taken by hamas reached a dead end. abc's ines de la cuetara has the very latest. >> the israeli military says its expanded ground operations to every part of the gaza strip. video released by israeli defense forces shows their massive operation underway in northern gaza since the start of the war. >> the idf has located 800 tunnel shafts and destroyed 500 of them. in addition to many miles of tunnel routes under civilian areas. our soldiers are finding large quantities of weapons in those shafts. this renewed effort comes after the week long cease fire between israel and hamas came to an end. >> we're working at this literally by the hour. the national security council and all the way up the high levels of the administration to try to see hour by hour if we can get these discussions back going, going forward to see if we can

get the pause back in place and get the hostages out in gaza. >> the hamas run health ministry says at least 15,000 have been killed since the war began, with more than 700 killed and hundreds more injured in just the past two days. the hospital overwhelm armed with patients as strikes once again ramp up. this man has lost his son, nephew and sister. saying we ask god to help our people stay strong. hamas is also firing at israel. the rockets seen intercepted in central israel. israel confirming hostage negotiations with hamas have reached a dead end. more than 130 of them still being held in gaza, including michael levy's brother, who has a two year old son. >> he lost his mother that was murdered there and his father is kidnaped and is a hostage now. and for us, it's crucial to get him back and to. and to make sure that almog will have a father. >> israeli officials are

predicting a long war. they say once it ends, they plan to put a security envelope around the gaza strip to prevent another terror attack like october 7th. >> we can't have terrorists on our borders as that can just you know, it will cross over into israel and butcher our people again. it must be understood the israeli people will not stand for that any longer. >> ines de la cuetara abc news, tel aviv. >> a protest outside the home of former house speaker nancy pelosi today. members of the group code pink gathered to call for a permanent ceasefire in the escalating war between israel and hamas. the group says the us government is ignoring the suffering of the people in gaza. pelosi did not appear to be home at the time of the protest, but kites were seen high above crissy field today as a nod to the world record set by children in gaza. back in 2011. in an effort to raise attention for the children impacted by the

war. the kites in solidarity initiative held a kite flight over san francisco. kites were also available to purchase, with proceeds going towards the middle east children's alliance. and we will continue to keep you updated on what's happening in israel, gaza and here at home. you can find the latest updates anytime at abc7 news.com and download the abc7 bay area news app to get breaking news alerts and live stream updates. moving on local biologists are concerned about a sudden salmon die off in a creek near downtown san jose. about 50 dead salmon have been discovered over the last 30 days in the lower silver creek that flows underneath the 101 freeway. those numbers come from the salmon and steelhead restoration group. the group blames pollution, but also says the bridge design stops the salmon from migrating. >> the construction is disperses the water only makes it an inch deep and the fish get into under

the bridge and it's 60 yards in a one inch of water. and then they find themselves they can't take the risk and they end up expiring underneath the bridge. >> valley water says it's committed to providing a healthy environment for the fish, but doesn't have control over the water flows in the creek. officials hope that more expected rain in the area will increase those flows naturally. the holiday shopping season is in full swing and small businesses in the bay area are looking for more of your shopping dollars. but in san francisco, two events this weekend are highlighting the challenges some are facing. from crime to economic disparity and tourism. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has a tale of two neighborhoods this holiday. >> a holiday winter wonderland on chinatown's grand avenue. san francisco firefighters distributing toys to kids in need. and this year, organizers say about 2000 families showed up. >> i think one of the issues

that we see here living in san francisco, there's a lot of economic and social disparities that we need to address. but this is just something that we can do as an immediate solution to sprinkle a little bit of magic during the holidays. >> linda fong is giving back to the chinatown neighborhood where she grew up, where small businesses could now use a hand. >> chinatown has suffered. we have seen a downturn in tourism, for sure. >> tane chan owns the walk shop, featuring lots of culinary gifts. chan is hopeful tourist and visitor traffic will bounce back to pre-pandemic levels. >> i think it's picking up and it should. it's the holidays and everybody's going to be in the festive mood. i'm different tools that mr. pause is a very good dog and the castro a holiday block party on noe street. >> castro merchants creating this festive place for families while sharing the love with small businesses. >> now, unfortunately, there's a bunch of small businesses that they didn't make it, you know, during pandemic. i think it's very, very important to do

offering 15% over the next three years. alaska airlines is buying one of its biggest rivals. alaska air announced today it's acquiring hawaiian airlines. for $1.9 billion. the deal, which needs government approval, comes after several months of negotiations. hawaiian's ceo says both companies will keep their brands. the merger will also turn honolulu into the company's second largest hub that could enable greater international connectivity for west coast travelers. well, a warning tonight from the us secret service about so-called pig butchering scams. it's a type of crypto fraud and it's on the rise. the secret service says the scam originated in southeast asia and is spreading globally. the abc7 news i-team found out on how hackers are specifically targeting silicon valley tech workers. i-team reporter stephanie sierra spoke with a secret service special agent about the impact here in the bay area and the pig

butchering scam. >> it's a type of romance scam that's a little more sophisticated in which criminals lure victims into a virtual relationship to build trust over time. eventually, the victim is convinced into investing into cryptocurrency tsay online with the expectation that the money's going to double or triple in a matter of days or even weeks. the victims take and monitor what they believe is a legitimate website, but it's actually fraudulent in which the victims believe their money is growing exponentially at at that point, they're kind of convinced, like, hey, at first they've got to pay a capital gains tax on it. so when they're out of money, they've got to go to family members or take additional loans. >> one victim we spoke with last year, a software developer, lost $1.3 million. are you continuing to see more cases like that? >> yeah, unfortunately, i just talked to a victim yesterday that lost $750,000. so we're probably seeing an average of 400 to 500,000 just locally here in our office. >> can you walk us through how

hackers are finding new ways to target victims in silicon valley ? >> yeah, i mean, they're definitely increasing and growing in sophistication. so take like crack cracking .com. it's a good legitimate, you know, exchange operating here in the us, however fictitious website that we just discovered on a friday is cracking .com and we came across was galaxy dot x dot net. if you click actually the download button, it will actually take you to what appears to be like the app store. however, it's not. it's just kind of sending you to another website. >> that was stephanie sierra reporting secret service agent broad street says one way to check the legitimacy of the website is to do an internet search for the name. if a scam advisory already exists, it should come up in your search. now, if you have a story for the i-team, you can call the number that's on your screen right now or head to abc7 news.com slash i-team. just ahead, the bay area

busy out there. but nonetheless, yes, we will have an energetic swell. those northwest facing beaches from sonoma county all the way down to big sur. the sneaker waves really can catch you off guard. so please keep that in mind as we look at live doppler seven, the rain. well we had it overnight up in the north bay and the pacific northwest, really seeing a lot of rain, a lot of cloud cover, some muggy conditions for us. in a live look outside, pretty view cloud cover insulating us for tonight, 58 in san francisco, 57 in oakland. upper 50s mountain view is 61. in san jose and another live look sfo here we have enough cloud cover that we'll see some fog tonight. i'm not anticipating a lot of fog. we had a dense fog advisory towards monterey this morning. 55 in santa rosa, 57 by the delta and livermore and the sacramento valley certainly will be looking at some dense fog, maybe some of that moving into concord and livermore. otherwise with the clouds tonight, some of that fog developing early for your monday

and then increasing sunshine as high pressure builds in bringing a slightly warmer day. tuesday looks to be the warmest and then we'll see some higher clouds and rain returning by late on tuesday in the north bay. so here's the plan as we get going on monday. notice a nice clear start by by mid-morning after that fog burns back and we'll have plenty of sunshine. the higher clouds into tuesday. and then overnight, as we get early thursday morning, that's when we're going to see the rain up in the north bay. this is a cold front that's going to push on through throughout the day on wednesday. heavy amounts will be in the north bay and we'll see the rainfall amounts add up from about a half inch north bay to perhaps a quarter of an inch in the east bay, lesser amounts in the south bay, a couple of inches of snow in the sierra nevada. much colder air behind this system. but we've got the warm air on tap for the milder air for monday and tuesday, mid 60s in oakland, 66, in fremont overnight tonight upper 40s to
