for your mind. foyour. and for the community. -team! kaiser permanente. ♪ >> brittany: good evening. thank you for joining us. tonight, jonathan majors now facing an uncertain future after being convicted of assault and harassment of his former girlie man, grace. whatever sentence is handed down by the court, majors' career is already feeling the fallout. here's abc's aaron katersky. >> reporter: today, a verdict in the case of jonathan majors, the

actor convicted of charges he assaulted his then girlie man, grace jabari. the jury found he did not intentionally assault her acquitting him of two counts but determined he acted recklessly convicting him of two other misdemeanors. >> jonathan majors was found guilty of reckless assault. a class a misdemeanor as well as harassment, just a violation. >> reporter: the actor was on the brink of super stardom landing roles alongside hollywood a-listers and billed as marvel's next big villain, kang the conquerer. >> you're an interesting man. >> reporter: but moments after the verdict came down -- >> jonathan, how do you feel? >> reporter: marvel studios dropping him from future projects. >> we're talking about probably the most successful movie franchise of all time, and to no longer be a part of that has to be a major blow to what's to come for jonathan majors.

>> reporter: in court, explosive evidence, all painting a picture of a troubled relationship. >> for an assault case like this and certainly of this magnitude to happen, had everyone kind of transfixed to find out if any of these allegations were true and if so, what that would mean for the rest of his career in hollywood. >> reporter: it was march of this year when majors and his then girlie manfriend grace got into a fight. surveillance video shows the aftermath, majors hoisting jabari off the ground, shoving her into a car before he is seen running off. she chases after him. he pushes her away and runs. jabari crossing traffic in pursuit. at trial, jabari testified the fight began because she believed majors was cheating on her. my head was resting on his shoulder, jabari told the jury. we were chatting and he was scrolling on his phone when a message popped up saying i wish i was kissing you. upset, jabari testified she grabbed the phone and then i felt a heavy thud on top of me. what i knew to be the weight of

him on top of me and him trying to pry the phone out of my fingers. in the criminal complaint, she alleged majors struck her in the face with an open hand causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear and that he put his hand on her neck causing bruising. >> she testifies that she comes back home to the shared home between her and jonathan where he is not there. he's staying at a hotel somewhere else. she's in such pain that she cannot fall asleep. she ultimately passes out in the bathroom and jonathan majors arrives just early in the morning, sometime around 7:00-ish and calls 911 because he believes she's attempting to take her life. >> what happened exactly, do you know? >> no, i don't know. but she's unconscious. she's naked from the bottom down. she has a sweatshirt on. she's my ex-partner. we broke up.

i came back. she sent me text messages insinuating as much. i stayed in a hotel last night. i came home this morning. >> reporter: body camera footage from the officers who arrived at their shared apartment in manhattan shows majors covering jabari with a blanket and police bringing them to her closet where she was lying on the floor. a visibly distraught jabari is helped up by officers and taken to the hospital. officers notice marks on her body and pictures presented at trial show jabari's fractured finger and a laceration behind her ear. jonathan majors was arrested and charged with assault and harassment and released on his own recognizance. during the two-week-long trial the actor holding a bible appearing alongside his new girlie man, the actress megan good. >> he decided not to testify. there's a lot of gownfalls for someone testifying where so much of his relationship was put out for the public to scrutinize.

>> reporter: he recounted several episodes that took place during the relationship where she says majors' mood would swing from sweet, loving to feeling he hates me. >> she was very powerful and strong in many of her testimony and statements but a few times it became too much for her and often heard her when she left the witness stand going into the back room trying to compose herself. >> reporter: the jury also hearing this recording of the actor scolding jabari during a previous altercation. >> then how dare you come home drunk and disturb the peace of our house? >> reporter: telling her he needs a great woman because he is a great man. >> coretta scott king, do you know who that is? that is martin luther king's wife, michelle obama, barack obama's wife. my temper, my [ bleep ], my -- all that said, i'm a great man. a great man. i am doing great things, not just for me, but for my culture and for the world. that is actually the position i'm in.

the woman that supports me needs to be a great woman. >> you could see the reaction within the courtroom but also on social media. many people saying, well, one, why would you compare yourself implicitly to president obama or martin luther king and the court looked negatively upon jonathan majors as this toxic boyfriend in that moment. >> reporter: in court the actor's lawyer maintained majors is completely innocent, pointing to the video of him being chased by jabari after the incident. >> he tried to paint this as a person who is abused doesn't chase their abuser and released video of grace just hours later in a nightclub with three people she had just met partying, drinking, smoking, kind of raising doubt that she was truly injured. >> reporter: before today's verdict he had been on a rise in hollywood. >> so many directors, so many studios, everyone wanted to work with him from spike lee to the

marvel universe, i mean, he was someone who really was kind of positioned to be, you know, the guy to pick up for will smith and samuel jackson. >> reporter: majors taking on the kang the conqueror role that spans many shows including loki. >> you can't get to the end until you've been changed by the journey. this stuff, it needs to happen. >> when everyone watched that finale of the first season of "loki," people screamed, got so excited because kang the conquerer was introduced as a new character and jonathan majors was the person bringing this character to life and subsequently saw him in marvel films after that. >> reporter: majors graduated from the yale school of drama and first started turning heads in the 2019 indie film, "the last black man in san francisco." >> o'brien is smoking a

cigarette. >> okay. >> reporter: he played a sensitive young man who sees the world around him as a stage play. >> great news is, you're all doing marvelous work. >> what? >> congratulations. it's not easy. i believe you. >> reporter: afterwards he was tapped for "da 5 "lovecraft country." his lawyer saying the jury did not believe grace jabari's story because they found mr. majors did not intentionally cause injuries to her. the jury nevertheless found that mr. major was somehow reckless. grace's strength and unrelenting perseverance allowed the jury system to work the way it should.

intentionally inflicting upon a child specifically rf and ef, both franke's children serious physical injury as well as permitting another to inflict serious physical injury upon that child. >> reporter: disturbing new details describe the children facing physical torture, one child referred to as rf was forced to do physical tasks for hours and days at a time. he was also forced to stand in direct sunlight for days that resulted in serious sunburns with blistered and sloughing skin. prosecutors announced today that franke will testify against her former life coaching partner, jodi hildebrandt who's also been charged with abuse. >> those of you who are angry, come. we'd love to have you. >> the plea deal of ruby franke smells of trying to catch the bigger fish. >> she agrees to testify against jodi hildebrandt and in return the washington county attorney's office remains neutral before

future hearings. >> reporter: jodi hildebrandt's attorney did not respond to request for comment. in a statement given to abc news, franke's lawyers wrote, ruby franke wants to take responsibility for the harm she's cautioned to her children and entire family. she knows that by pleading guilty and accepting the punishment, she is taking a step in the right direction to be accountable for her actions. >> 191, the address of your emergency. >> i had a 12-year-old boy show up at my front door asking for help. >> reporter: it was august 30th, when ruby franke's 12-year-old son ran to a neighbor's home begging for help. >> he's emaciated of the he's got tape around his legs, he's hungry and he's thirsty. what's your mom's name? ruby franke? ruby franke is the his's mom name. >> reporter: franke's 12-year-old son brings this neighbor to tears. >> this boy has been -- he

warning sgzs. juju chang sat down with her. >> she made me sleep outside in the snow and duct taped me. i wasn't allowed to speak to anyone. >> what in theory was the justification for the duct tape? >> the duct tape was in her words an external reminder to me that i'm a liar and that every word that comes out of my mouth is a lie. it's 100% jodi and i understand why the fpublic is ruby but all these theories and modalities all comes from jodi. >> reporter: his eldest son chad appearing in the video that raised concerns among many of her followers. >> what you guys didn't know was chad didn't get any room. he didn't get anything. he was sleeping on the floor in the family room. >> reporter: records indicate police responded more than a dozen times in the last few years as early as 2018. a recently released 911 call

made in september 2022 by franke's own daughter shari alleging neglect and concern for others in the home. >> hi, miami name is shari favree and my siblings were living in springfield and they have been left alone for four or five days. >> reporter: questions remain whether franke will lose custody of her children. his estranged husband filed for divorce following her arrest and has petitioned the court for full custody of their four younger children. for now, both franke and jodi hildebrandt remain in jail and franke awaiting sentencing in february and faces a maximum of 60 years in prison. when we come back, a bit of an upswing. the story that's tonight's night light.
