way. like in a very bad way. like scary. yeah. >> we're traumatized. we're trauma bonded now. >> and now we want to start 2024. you know, you say you want to start with the bang, but not like that. not like that. >> no, definitely not like that. it terrifying start to the new year a bart train derails and catches fire in the east bay. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm kristen sze that bart train derailed this afternoon. >> this morning, just after 9:00 and sending passengers running for safety. >> it's going to be a while before the line is back on track. the derailed train still needs to be moved. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley is live with the latest developments. leslie >> wow, what a story and what a development today, right now, two lanes of eastbound 24 have just been shut down. crews managed to move an immense a huge crane through the caldecott tunnel, and they're moving it into place so that crews can begin a complicated job of lifting the derailed cars off the track and put them back on

the correct track, and then hopefully remove them so that crane is getting put into place for a difficult job going into the night here. uh- eastbound 24 could be shut down for as much as six hours now. this morning it was people heading home, people heading to work, people coming back from new year's eve celebration who ended up getting caught up in this train derailment, a deeply shaken passenger who escaped the burning bart train shot this video on his cell phone. his first responders converged on the orinda bart station on new year's morning, not how we want to start 2024. >> you know, you say you want to start with the bang, but not like that. just past the orinda station at 9:00, the eight car eastbound passenger train on bart's busy yellow line from sfo to antioch derailed and caught fire at an interlocking connecting two tracks. >> the operations control center was unable to communicate with the interlocking to move the

tracks into the proper position. >> reporter passengers described the trains stopping twice and then starting to move backwards as it derailed the screeches. >> the screeches were different. >> it wasn't like usual screeches. it was like weird. and then it smoked on the outside, and then it smoked in the inside of the cart everywhere. saw smoke, and then you saw, like from our view, it's just fire like orange and just pop pop. so then we tried to get to the next cart. we open our cart door, and the next cart door was like angled in a and we tried to open it. me and the guy in front of me, the first two people, we were trying to open it. so somebody behind us was like, just jump, just jump. so we just jumped in this outside like like mission impossible almost. but like, not in a cool way. like in a very bad way. like scary. >> we all kind of had to jump off a good distance from the train onto the tracks. >> it was pretty scary. it was pretty dramatic. and, uh, yeah, yeah, it was crazy. and we

ultimately we got got off safely. >> bart reported no serious injuries, but nine people were taken by ambulance with minor injuries. other trains stuck on the track were also evacuated with passengers walking over the rocky track to the orinda station, where they found themselves stuck. bart said because of the holiday, it took longer than usual to coordinate a bus bridge, angering some stranded riders. the california public utilities commission is launching an investigation into why the train derailed up is getting the derailed cars rerailed and then crews are standing by to do extensive track repairs overnight. the goal, of course, is for bart to be operating normally by tomorrow morning. but at uh- again, the word of caution it might not be a bad idea to develop a plan b, a backup plan, just in case it could be they can't get these cars rerailed and they'd have to be moved on

to a truck, which would require more extensive work to be done, and the repairs could take longer than expected. again, it's going to be a busy overnight here at the orinda bart station reporting live. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news for sure. >> leslie, thank you so much. ac transit is providing a free bus bridge between the affected stations, and busses will run between the orinda and walnut creek stations, making a stop at the lafayette station in between . bart is warning riders to add additional travel time to your trips. >> now to new details about the person who died after suffering fireworks related injuries in san francisco. abc seven news reporter luz pena went to treasure island, where residents are mourning the death. >> luz joins us live now from the newsroom with the very latest on this luz. >> just devastating. i spoke to a friend of the victim who said he was only 18 years old, and according to several neighbors, there were about 50 people around. fireworks last night. and today they're mourning the death of 18 less than an hour

into the new year, san francisco police officers responded to a chaotic scene involving a fireworks injury on treasure island. in the background, a woman can be heard in distress as officers and paramedics respond. id baby crazy gauaranteed. a neighbor said a group was shooting fireworks when one of the large explosives hit a teenager in the head. >> i en su cabeza. >> sfpd said the victim was given first aid but died on scene. >> san francisco fire department did respond for a traumatic injury. um associated to new year's eve. san francisco police department is investigating that incident today. >> fireworks debris was visible in a trash can outside of a home. off camera from one of the windows. a friend of the victim said he was 18 years old and visiting the area to celebrate the new year with friends. today, neighbors were shocked to hear that teen died, came outside and i seen there was a

lot of commotion and a lot of people over there. >> a couple people mentioned that someone had passed away due to a firework going off and hitting them. a death that has shaken this community, who've left candles to remember the teen. >> that's pretty sad. i didn't know that. and it makes me upset a little, you know, because people are supposed to be safe. i'm not sure what happened, but it does suck going into the new year here. and that san francisco fire is urging the public to call 311 and report illegal fireworks activity to keep communities safe. >> they're extremely dangerous. and again, no matter if it's a safe and sane firework or a so-called safe and sane firework, or a professional or commercial grade firework that's being used by a nonprofessional, um, any of those can ignite a fire that fire can cause injuries. it can cause death. >> and we spoke to a neighbor who said the fireworks were excessive, and they heard an older adult ask the group to stop shortly after, an explosion took place. as sfpd is now asking anyone with relevant

2021, according to santa clara county data. we're still seeing a lot of covid in the community. >> a lot of people are getting sick. it's causing a lot of disruptions. it seems that everybody, uh, i know or almost everyone has some sort of respiratory illness right now, including covid. >> and that's what has doctors concern right now. it's not just covid. ucsf's doctor george rutherford says there are rising trends of influenza and rsv nationwide, as well. >> there are substantial increases in respiratory syncytial virus cases and hospitalizations, rsv in adults and substantial increases in influenza hospitalizations and cases and tests. um in adults and children. >> these experts say keeping hospitalizations down in spite of rising wastewater is key. they suggest getting diagnosed quickly by testing to figure out how to get healthy again, but to remain healthy from the big three, respiratory viruses. >> current vaccine covers the current variants. um, so if you

haven't gotten the new vaccine that's been around since october , i definitely get it. if you haven't gotten the rsv vaccine and you're 60 and over, i definitely. get it. and if you haven't had the flu vaccine and you're six months old or older, i would definitely get it. >> dustin dawsey, abc seven news the new year begins with minimum wage workers earning more money. >> the state's minimum wage jumps from 1550 an hour to $16 an hour in the bay area. the average is now $17.39 an hour. mountain view has the highest minimum wage, $18.75 an hour, up $0.60 over last year. the statewide hourly pay increase is part of california law that has gradual raised. the minimum wage from $10 in 2017, a major earthquake shakes japan. >> here in the bay area, protesters target former speaker of the house nancy pelosi in what they're calling for and chilling out the cool way to celebrate the new

starting with the showers, but then periods of downpours throughout the day and for the remainder of the week it will remain mainly wet and unsettled. so here we go with the overnight conditions, mainly cloudy, a few showers developing in the early morning hours in the northern most part of the viewing area overnight lows will be mainly in the low to mid 40s, a little chillier in the far north with upper 30s at ukiah, santa rosa and lakeport. then tomorrow, as the rain begins to advance southward, we'll see high temperatures in the north bay, mainly in the upper 50s, but we'll see some low and even low to mid 60s in most other locations before the rain arrives. now let's talk about that rain on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level one storm, so for tomorrow, look for showers initially and then periods of downpours. it will be breezy even gusty at times with of course wet and slippery roads in the morning, mainly north bay locations will see wetrillionoads for the morning commute in the evening, though it will be wet in just about all areas. here's a forecast

animation starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow between 8 a.m. and about noon. we'll see rain beginning to spread across across the north bay. mainly light or light to moderate rain initially, but then by 3 p.m. we'll see drenching rain over most of the north bay and that drenching rain will quickly expand in the afternoon early evening hours to other parts of the bay area. so we're all going to get a bit of a soaking before the system starts to weaken. just a little bit late tomorrow night, and that'll be followed by mainly showers and lightrillionain going into wednesday. rainfall totals by wednesday night late wednesday night, generally an inch to an inch and a half in the north bay. half an inch to just under an inch over the remainder of the bay area. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. showers and downpours tomorrow. still a level one storm, at least for wednesday morning as the system weakens just a bit. partly cloudy and dry on thursday, but late friday we'll get more showers coming in, continuing into another rainy day on saturday, and then mainly sunny on sunday and monday. notice how chilly is going to get going into next weekend with
