>> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we begin with a growing mystery in upstate new york, where the fbi is investigating a deadly and fiery crash. it happened outside a concert venue. >> agents are now looking into whether there's a link to terrorism. this morning, a new clue as the fbi investigates whether a potential new year's day terror attack was averted in upstate new york. this large suv crashed and erupted into a ball of flames in rochester early yesterday morning, and investigators now tell abc news the driver is from nearby syracuse and went to the syracuse airport before the crash to rent that large ford expedition suv. police say the ford collided with a smaller suv around 1 a.m. outside the kodak center, where 1000 people were coming out of a concert. >> the force of the collision caused the two vehicles to go through a group of pedestrians that were in the crosswalk, and then into two other vehicles. >> two people in the smaller suv were killed. the driver of the ford was hospitalized with life threatening injuries. you saw the carnage of the cars and the

one one car burnt up and car pieces everywhere. >> and smell of gasoline was just so intense. i i couldn't believe how strong it was. >> here's the big mystery surrounding the crash. according to police, first responders found at least a dozen gasoline canisters inside the ford. it's unclear why the driver was transporting so much gas. >> there was a large fire associated with the crash that took the rochester fire department almost one hour to extinguish for weeks, police around the country have been on heightened alert, outside of concern that the war in the middle east could lead to violence here at home. >> but overnight, no additional details were released on the people involved in yesterday morning's crash. the three pedestrians were hit in that crash. one suffered life threatening injuries breaking overnight. >> an apparent case of political violence in south korea as a top politician was stabbed while taking questions from reporters. lee jae myung, who ran for president in 2022 and leads the current opposition party, was stabbed in his jugular vein.

police say someone posing as a supporter asked him for an autograph and then attacked him. the suspect has been arrested and lee was rushed to the hospital. his predecessor was beaten while campaigning for him two years ago. >> now to the developing story in the middle east. iran has reportedly deployed a warship to the red sea. tensions are rising in the region, with the u.s. now attacking and killing several iranian backed fighters accused of launching attacks on commercial ships in recent weeks. abc's jay o'brien is here now with the very latest. jay, good morning andrew. >> good morning iran appearing to waste no time here in responding to the u.s. military which has been confronting iran backed rebel fighters in yemen this morning, a potential escalation in the red sea, a crucial shipping lane for global trade. it's where iran backed houthi rebels have been attacking commercial ships in a show of support for hamas's war against israel. now an iranian warship has reportedly sailed into the region a day after u.s. forces killed several houthi rebels. the pentagon says the

houthis were trying to board a merchant vessel when they fired at two u.s. navy helicopters. the helicopters returning fire, killing ten rebel fighters. it comes as israel now plans to withdraw some troops from gaza in a shift to more targeted operations against hamas in the coming months. israel's defense minister says some israeli residents living near the gaza border will soon be allowed to return to their homes, as they were evacuated after the october seventh attack by hamas. that triggered the war yesterday. israel's military releasing video of its k9 unit, saying it found weapons inside a kindergarten in gaza. and according to the hamas run health ministry, an israeli airstrike killed 15 people in central gaza, bringing the reported death toll to nearly 22,000. but this palestinian girl sang her new year's wish is to return to her home. meanwhile, in the u.s, pro-palestinian protesters marching through the streets of

new york last night, disrupting traffic to busy jfk airport. as for those hostages held by hamas in gaza, an israeli team is expected to head to egypt this week to discuss a potential deal, but abc news is learning no breakthrough is imminent. andrew >> all right, jay o'brien, for us in washington dc. jay. thank you. a search for survivors is underway in western japan as the death toll climbs after a powerful earthquake. at least 48 people have died and thousands of homes and buildings are destroyed. tsunami warnings were lifted, but fires erupted and trains had to be halted. the 7.5 magnitude quake was the strongest to hit that part of japan since the 1800s. >> seven uh towns that you can feel this earthquake and it it just it just didn't feel normal. it didn't feel like the normal. you got an earthquake for, uh, you know, tremors for a couple of minutes. this felt more significant than that. and it felt a lot more dangerous. >> thousands of soldiers and other emergency workers have been called to join the rescue

efforts. >> now to the race for president. the iowa caucuses just days away. and yet another poll is showing good news for former president trump in a possible general election matchup with president biden. this morning, a new poll shows president biden losing ground to former president trump among latinos and younger voters. the usa today suffolk university survey shows trump with a 39% support among the latino demographic, compared to biden's 34% back in 2020. biden got 65% support from latino voters. concerns about the economy and the border have weighed on voters. the poll also finds trump now leading biden among voters under age 35. many concerned about climate change and the middle east. >> are you ready to work hard over these next two weeks so that we win the iowa caucus? meanwhile the republican primary candidates are making their final push with the iowa

plane to san juan that was at the same gate his father claims the agent never scanned his son's ticket. last week, spirit airlines fired a gate agent who allowed a six year old traveling alone to fly to orlando instead of fort myers, and a teenager in utah has survived a scam known as cyber kidnaping. >> the scammers are targeting students and their families, and they're walking away with big money. abc's derek dennis explains. >> this morning, a 17 year old chinese exchange student has been found safe by police in utah, camping out in the woods, cold and alone. he speaks broken english and had been reported kidnaped by his family in china after they paid a ransom demand of $80,000. the parents reported to school officials that they received a photograph of their child that would indicate he was abducted, and they requested a ransom. turns out it was a scam known as cyber kidnaping, in which kidnapers target foreign exchange students and their families, telling each that the other is in danger and then convincing the student to isolate themselves, send

pictures or cell phone videos, making it look like they're being held captive to their parents, who in turn hand over ransom money electronically. >> actors are able to manipulate both a victim and their family into believing that something has happened to the victim. brandon amacher is a cyber security expert and instructor at utah valley university, and says these unknown actors are crafty. they are likely targeting, you know, people who are very out of their element, people who are new in a new country, new environment where they're very unfamiliar with law enforcement, they're very unfamiliar culturally, authorities are trying to track down the so-called cyber kidnapers, starting with the money that was transferred to chinese banks. >> as for the 17 year old student, he was rescued by police three days after his reported kidnaping his story. a lesson to other parents of kids studying or even working abroad. just because somebody contacts you online doesn't mean it's real. experts say the scam typically stops when the communication stops, so victims are advised to cut off
