level four storm hit the bay area, we are still talking road closures, fallen trees and power outages. and sadly, the storm is a deadly one. that is the sad part about this. >> so we have team coverage spread out in the neighborhoods that were hit the hardest by the storm. but let's begin with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with a look at the forecast. spencer. >> okay, dan, i'll start with a look at that live doppler seven image you just commented on, which shows us widespread relief for much o of the bay area. and yet we still have a storm down here in the south bay, reaching from, well, the gilroy area up through morgan hill, across the mount hamilton area, up into livermore, out to tracy and antioch. we still have some rain and some heavy downpours, localized, isolated, but heavy downpours nonetheless. so this is still a storm ranking level one on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale for the next few hours, we'll have periods of showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two isolated. of course, much lighter wind than yesterday, and watch for debris on the roadways if you're driving. here's the forecast animation. notice how
6:01 pm
quickly it all disappears. i'm talking next 2 to 3 hours. this storm should be all gone, giving way to at least partial clearing during the overnight hours going into the early morning. the wind is really calm right now. only one location, san francisco, showing surface wind speeds above ten miles per hour. yet flooding concerns remain because the soil is super saturated, so a flood warning remains in effect until 7:00 this evening. for parts of sonoma, napa and marin counties and a fat until r solano county. but uh- sunnier skies are on the way. i'll tell you about that a little bit later. dan good to hear. >> spencer. thank you. as we said, this storm unfortunately has turned deadly. a man was killed in boulder creek after a tree fell on a home along highway nine. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey spoke with a neighbor and he is live with the story. dustin >> yeah, dan it's chilly right now, but we have some clear skies overhead. a major difference from what it was over the weekend, particularly yesterday, where strong winds and heavy rain brought down

thousands of trees throughout the santa cruz mountains, including in boulder creek, where 45 year old robert brainard was sadly killed when one of those trees came down on a home. a soft rain falls during a solemn day in boulder creek. one person is dead after a massive tree came crashing down onto this house just off of highway nine. chris louth saw it all happen from his house across the street. >> right across all these. it was like one of these bad boys and we could see, just like from over here, it went boom, boom, boom just came down. >> the damage was extensive while the front of the house looked undamaged, the back show the devastation from the impact. eight cars in the driveway were crushed by the fallen tree, but the sound of the falling tree was not the most terrifying thing. neighbors heard. >> the thing we heard was somebody screaming, but then the screaming stopped like. like you've ever heard a wounded dog
6:03 pm
like that, but it wasn't a dog. it was human. the impact of the tree killed 45 year old robert brainard, the third, inside the house. >> a second person in the home escaped and called 911. but ems and fire were unable to save brainard. inside louth wishes he could have done more. >> you live in the mountains, you everybody knows you don't know each other, but you know we all. it's a small community, so i'm pretty sure someone i know knows the person. so >> and it's tough to lose someone. >> it's more so tough. like just there's a tree like he could have been watching tv in his living room and then boom, gone. >> louth said he would cringe with every loud crack he heard during the storm. the county tells us there were several reports of trees crushing homes as damage was felt throughout the region. >> we had winds over 60 miles an hour at the coast and uh- over 90. in some of the upper elevations in the santa cruz mountains. so that's pretty extraordinary wind event for our county. um, i've been asked by people how many trees came down.
6:04 pm
i don't know, but the answer is in the thousands. >> thankfully, there were no more lives lost across the county during the busy and hard hitting storm, but this is a reminder of the dangers of mountain living. >> i love living up here. i won't move, this won't stop me. but like, just know that out. boom. blink of an eye you'll be gone. >> our thoughts and prayers are of course, with robert brainard's family and friends at this time. the other problem going on right now here in the santa cruz mountains with those trees, thousands remain without power. the county says they are working with pg and e to try to get the lights back on. hopefully soon as we get dark. this evening here live in the santa cruz mountains. dustin dawsey abc seven news okay, dustin, thank you very much. >> crews are working to restore power to more than 130,000 p-g-and-e's customers in the bay area. this is a look at p-g-and-e's outage map. the colors represent different clusters. red means more than 5000 are without power. orange is between 500 and 5000. yellow is fewer than 500. >> this storm really packed a
6:05 pm
punch in terms of outages. this was one of the top three most impactful storms in p-g-and-e's history, according to the national weather service. this was the strongest storm in the bay area since 2010. utility has brought out more contractors to help today and is working to restore power to all affected areas in the north bay. >> yesterday's major storm left a trail of destruction in its wake. the cleanup is just beginning and could take weeks. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard continues our live team coverage in santa rosa. cornell ahmed this neighborhood still without power tonight, there is a trail of debris across much of sonoma county. >> tree limbs and branches. some of those trees doing some real damage tonight. check it out. this tree crushed part of this home here in santa rosa. luckily the homeowner was not here at the time, but he tells us that he had a bad feeling something would happen during the storm.
6:06 pm
>> i had a premonition, and when i was over there, one limb says a premonition that a tree would fall on his santa rosa home came true sunday after this 100 foot fir tree came crashing down on top of his garage. >> the home on nob hill drive is now redtagged, meaning unsafe to occupy. >> luckily, no one is injured, so it's okay. and this? this is actually a healthy tree, so i have no idea. maybe the wind was way too strong. the mega storm uprooting dozens of trees across sonoma county. >> pure panic. just panic. >> dorina voloshyna and blake o'connor are stuck at home in forestville after strong winds toppled this giant tree, which took part of their asphalt driveway and power lines down with it. we're kind of stranded up here. >> we can't take our car down this driveway and we can't cross the downed power lines until they come and clear it. >> heavy rain caused tributaries on the russian river to spill over into vineyards, flooding waller road. hi. we're here at russian river brewing company in windsor, uh- our power went out
6:07 pm
last night at about 630 and no news yet from p-g-and-e's as to when it's going to be restored. >> natalie chiluiza from the russian river brewing company says her crew took matters into their own hands and rented this 800 watt generator to keep the beer cool. >> we were able to save the beer and we were able to get a little packaging and filtration done. today in marin county, first responders say high winds toppled this big tree into a home in forest knolls, causing extensive damage. no one was hurt. >> i just heard a boom boom. and when i guess my eyes opened, i saw a flash over there and a couple of seconds later, there was another boom. then there was a flash here in novato, heather catalon says a eucalyptus tree fell overnight off alameda del prado. >> it snapped two power poles on the way down and left her with no power and a very big mess in the neighborhood. >> wires were everywhere and it was just so scary
6:08 pm
>> first responders so busy this weekend, cal fire says during sunday's storm, its emergency command center responded to almost 400 incidents of trees and power lines down. meantime the homeowner here vowing to repair and rebuild. but it's going to take a long time. we're live in santa rosa tonight. cornel bernard, abc seven news. >> yeah, sure will. cornel thank you so much. and you can track the storm with the same live doppler seven that spencer uses. just search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it now. >> more weather as we continue, but let's move on. we are in the countdown to the super bowl. the 40 niners will play the kansas city chiefs this sunday in las vegas or as i like to call them, taylor swift's boyfriend's team. >> yes, i mean, that's appropriate. we sent our own abc seven news team to las vegas to cover the game. the fans and the excitement all week long. let's go live to abc seven news sports director larry biel. hey, larry, how is vegas tonight? >> uh- vegas is popping. it always is. i just love taylor
6:09 pm
swift's boyfriend team. i had not heard that, but that's you know, you ought to use that as a catch phrase or trademark that. yeah that's that's fantastic. we're just a few minutes away from uh, the 40 niners taking part in opening night at the super bowl. hot topic of conversation is going to be the quote unquote, questionable field conditions where the niners are practicing at unlv. although the. commissioner of the nfl says the field i playable, all the concern for the 40 niners is the unlv v practice field is too spongy. they're concerned about the potential for injuries, and the niners have had this concern in and other places. and nick bosa got hurt at metlife a few years ago. they've had a number of these field issues in the past. so they're sensitive to it. also it's been pouring rain here and the unlv field is outdoors. the chiefs they're indoors at the raiders facility. commissioner roger goodell says the nfl has 23 experts who claim the field is playable. i don't know how
6:10 pm
they got 23 of them, but anyway, for more, here's abc sevens chris alvarez with espn's nick wagoner. all right, here with espn's nick wagoner. >> nick, we're here at opening night. it's such an extravagant event, but let's talk about coming to the off field. but on the field issue with the 40 niners and the practice field kind of fill us in for the fans that don't know what's going on at unlv. >> well what's interesting chris, as you know, and as the fans know, the 40 niners are not big fans of field turf of the hard surface. but the issue that they're running into right now at unlv is not that. it's that there is grass over turf, and it's creating a real kind of a weird sense of their footing. and all those types of things. i don't i don't think they'reworrr safety issue. so much as just trying to be able to get their work done throughout the course of the day. so the niners did have today a walk through. it was going to be their first chance to really get a feel for it. so the players and the coaches and the people who actually have to play on it will get got their first look at it. >> i've seen some reports that there may be they have to share
6:11 pm
with the chiefs, and there's all this timing issue. i mean, that's kind of a weird thing to go into super bowl week. >> yeah, it's the last thing you want is to be able it's hard enough because you're not in your normal routine. and as we know, these players are the biggest creatures of habit of anyone out there. coaches, even more so to that extent. so i think that is going to be a big consideration for them if they do have to move, what does this mean for our scheduling? because the obvious option is yes, they can go use the raiders facility, but they would have to do it after the chiefs. >> nick, thank you so much. we'll be seeing you around. >> so just to follow up on what nick was saying, the unlv playing surface is artificial turf and the nfl put a grass surface on top of it last week. that is creating the sponginess effect. the raiders have three outdoor practice fields in addition to what the chiefs are using indoors, and the chiefs are technically the home team, so they got to choose it alternates every year, so we'll see if they can work something out schedule wise or when the chiefs aren't there, the niners can be there. it's a kind of complicated option that you really just do not want to have. as you get ready for the super bowl uh. enough about the grass. all right? we come back
6:12 pm
later in sports. we're going to come back and talk about the defense and what happened to the niners defense. they have to play better defense dan against taylor swift's boyfriend team i think i think that's i'm going to use that. >> let's use that all week. that's a good one. >> all right. thanks larry. >> yes our live super bowl coverage continues in 15 minutes. >> we'll catch up with abc seven news reporter j.r. stone, who found some 40 niners faithful vying for the title of biggest fan ever. also ahead, that's the problem for me because six more months i don't know what i'll do . >> what started out as a 90 day project will now last at least nine months. hear from people affected about whether this is helping to build a better bay area. >> and next, a look at some of the worst of the storm damage done to the ea

good news. the resort has received nearly a foot of snow in the last 24 hours. all right. back here at home, people in the east bay are dealing with the damage in the aftermath of the storm. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live once again in walnut creek, with a major scene there. leslie >> update for you here. dan. i have people at this apartment complex. it's pitch black over there. they're coming up to me and saying, when will the lights go back on? it's been over 24 hours now. the answer is p-g-and-e's is here on scene. there are 20 trucks lined up along ignacio valley road and they are working into the night to repair two broken power poles that literally snapped in the winds yesterday afternoon. and they are supporting all the power lines that go east of here . as they try to do these repairs. it's been a scene like this across many neighborhoods in the east bay. power poles
6:17 pm
snapped across parts of the east bay. electricity went out at this grocery store in downtown walnut creek sunday at 4 p.m, as did hundreds of homes by morning , desperate residents crowded into coffee shops for a warm cup of what they couldn't make at home. >> so there's nothing to do at home. i have no heat, and certainly no internet, so i'm here at peet's three, walnut creek elementary school started the day with no power and no heat warning. >> parents in an email about the situation. by lunchtime, though, the lights came back on over in the oakland hills, a towering eucalyptus tree came crashing down onto the roof of a home at grass valley road and scotia drive. remove all of the immense tree required a crane to do the heavy lifting. >> i went for a walk so the huge eucalyptus on this, uh, you know , roof right here wasn't really a surprise because, uh, last

year during the storm, there were like a couple who fell in this house to, thankfully, just on the fence. so pretty much everybody knows this is kind of like a timing bomb. they're just going to keep falling if they don't cut them in just a block away. >> at a chabot regional park staging area, you could see a field of stumps where east bay mud removed at least ten eucalyptus trees in recent years in hayward, power was out at the cal state east bay campus, which canceled classes for the day. power was eventually restored there, but residents in orinda along bates boulevard weren't so lucky. the whole neighborhood went dark sunday, and by monday afternoon, the lights still weren't on. >> it was cold. of course, you can warm up the house. you can heat anything to eat. and, uh, it's not easy. well again along ignacio valley road,

where they're working feverishly to get these power lines back up on new poles. >> uh- two eastbound lanes of ignacio completely shut down there. the traffic repercussions we're noticing right now, some ambulances having trouble getting through because of some of those lane closures. so again, p-g-and-e's is working hard here on the scene to try to get power restored to this pocket of walnut creek. reporting live. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> i can understand about the ambulances. thank you leslie. it was i came through there today. it was just backed up terribly for miles. >> yeah, hopefully we get enough of a break in the rain that some of these problems can be resolved. spencer, we need ketchup. >> we are about to get into break from the rain territory for thankfully. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that there's not a lot left from the storm in terms of coverage across the bay area, but what is left is significant down in the south bay from morgan hill and gilroy, up into the mount hamilton area, and then up into the east bay, up to tracy, out

the very best in the league during the regular season. then in the postseason, both the packers and lions had their way with that defense. i asked nfl network analyst brian baldinger, balding as he's known what has happened to the defense. well, first of all, it's great running into you. i'd rather be snorkeling with you somewhere, but yeah, but but that'll come. uh- what has happened to the 40 niners defense in the past few weeks? it almost seems like they peaked in late november, early december, and now they have a hard time stopping anybody. >> me yeah, well, they're getting blocked. they're not getting off blocks, you know. and so it really starts there. and then when the defense tackles are getting blocked like they did against detroit, it looks to me without talking to fred warner and dre greenlaw, it looks to me like they're guessing a little bit about where the action is going. and they're not really trusting the guys up front. and the run fits were terrible against detroit. and similarly, um, if you give aaron jones six inches of daylight, he's not going to miss

a hole. and they didn't tackle very well in that game. and so it's a combination of getting off blocks, uh, trusting the guys in front of you. your run fits have got to be done basically with blindfolds on. and they haven't done that. and then they have been susceptible to just end runs all year. and wide zone plays. and so it's still a question of just getting off blocks right now and defeating them. >> how much. realistically change at this point in the season with your tendencies? and i mean, you can't just start from scratch. >> no, but i mean, you can go to a five man defensive front. they have shown that at times if you're worried about the run, if you're worried about what isaiah pacheco could do, especially against patrick mahomes. >> yeah, because you're not going to fool him that many times. >> no, you're not going to fool him. and look, his ability to extend plays and find the secondary receiver or you know, the play beyond the x's and o's. it's a it's a real factor for every defense. would love to play two high safeties and say, okay, we're going to take your
