>> amanda, we're told that today's demonstration is not expected to impact flight schedules at all. and that flight attendants participating are actually not scheduled to be working today. unions representing more than 100,000 flight attendants from airlines, including american alaska, frontier, southwest and united are demanding better pay retirement benefits and more flexible schedules. this comes as nearly two thirds of flight attendants are currently in contract negotiations. the unions also want flight attendants to be paid for all their time working. most are not compensated for time spent waiting between flights in the airport, or even time boarding the plane. another concern the danger of unruly passengers. with incidents on the rise since the pandemic, dennis better get in my face and sucker punched me in the eye. >> i was knocked back three feet before i falling to the ground. >> i was hit in the head, knocked to the ground and i sustained very serious injuries

housing issues facing the city of oakland were also brought up during the hour long discussion. >> east bay congresswoman barbara lee spoke of her stance on crime and public safety. >> but we have to look at the underlying causes of a lot of the criminal activity that's taking place, especially with guns. we've got to pass a national assault weapon ban. we've got to get these weapons of war off of the street. >> republican candidate steve garvey and congresswoman katie porter also attended last night's event. california's primary election is just three weeks away, but san francisco's department of election has already started scanning the early voting ballots. they won't be counted, though, until election night. keep in mind that you can also vote in person at all of the bay area's county registrar's offices, and each registered voter in california will automatically receive a vote by mail ballot. that's thanks to a law that was passed during the pandemic, signed in 2021. california's primary is on

march the 5th, the last day to register to vote is february the 20th, but you can do same day voter registration and your vote will still count after your information is verified. >> breaking overnight, the senate approved a funding bill meant to provide aid for israel, ukraine and taiwan. the 70 to 29 vote happened just hours ago. 22 senate republicans supported the final measure, while two democrats, along with the lone independent, bernie sanders, voted against it. the $95 billion foreign aid package now heads to the house of representatives, where it faces an uncertain future in a statement yesterday, house speaker mike johnson has threatened to kill the measure if it makes it to the house. speaker johnson claims it, quote, fails to meet the mandate of securing america's borders last week, johnson helped dismantle an emergency aid package that he also said lacked sufficient border security. this morning, new information is emerging about the woman who walked into pastor joel osteen's texas megachurch on sunday and

started shooting gloria, we're learning she may have struggled with mental illness. >> good morning, amanda, and a facebook post. jenna say moreno's ex mother in law says she suffered from phrenia. now courtrillionecords show that she also had a turbulent marriage that ended in a bitter custody battle. moreno's ex accusing her of violence and putting her son in danger multiple times. according to authorities, the weapon that moreno used was bought legally in december. despite her history of mental illness. the motive for the shooting is still not clear. >> i want to know the motive, how she got the weapon, why she did this. we're not there yet. now police found anti-semitic writings but did not provide other details. >> they say moreno may have had a dispute with her ex-husband's family. some of whom are jewish now. moreno was shot and killed by an off duty police officer. her seven year old son was also injured. he was listed in critical condition. amanda. all right.

>> thank you so much, gloria. a civil rights organization has announced plans to sue the city of san diego over recent flooding. the people's association of justice claims the city failed to maintain its stormwater infrastructure, which led to devastating floods last month, mostly in lower income neighborhoods. many people are still unable to return to their homes. this latest lawsuit is one of several demanding payments for residents, and changes include establishing a stormwater utility to fund infrastructure projects. eventually, these lawsuits could gain class action status. >> two mudslides in big sur have trapped at least 50 people near paul's slide and let caltrans crew choose to offer daily convoys out of the area. the slides happened last week within days of each other. officials there say business in big sur is down as much as 35. >> we've got a 4.5 hour drive now to go across the convoy, across paul's slide, come back around. and so each of those

sort of a home in san mateo. the disturbing discovery was made on alameda de las pulgas, near 42nd avenue yesterday morning. san mateo police say they got a call for a welfare check at the home. they had to break a window to get inside, and that's when they found those four people dead. a man, a woman and two children. sources tell the abc7 news i-team the children were four year old twin boys. they have notrillioneleased how how this family died. >> we can only assume what has happened. whatever has happened is a major tragedy. and you wonder what could have been done to avoid it. >> we're expecting autopsy to be performed today to figure out what happened there. police say

there's no danger to the public. no sign of forced entry. and this appears to be an isolated incident. >> san francisco mayor london breed. now weighing in on attack that left a waymo car burned and destroyed. her statement reads in part, quote, it was an unacceptable act that has no place in our city, and we will work to hold those who committed it accountable. it happened saturday night in chinatown. no one was inside the self-driving car, which ended up surrounded by people who smashed windows, shattered the windshield and set off a firework inside the car. waymo sent us an updated statement about what happened, saying, quote, our vehicle was navigating this area along with other human driven cars. a pop up street show held up all traffic, at which point a crowd of folks rushed the waymo. the sfpd says it's investigated. so far, no suspects. >> new at six a major renovation is planned for san francisco's japantown, the peace plaza will be getting a whole new look. the project has been in plans for

almost seven years since leaking was discovered in the garage under the plaza. now, construction is set to begin this spring, with a completion date of late 2025 or early 2026. the cost of $33 million is being funded by a post pandemic bond, and state and federal grants. >> okay. oh, the drama over annie the falcon at uc berkeley. it continues. for those of you following along, annie has yet again taken a new mate. and now it's time to name him cal. falcons has been posting updates on its instagram account. the deadline for name suggestions is tomorrow. very fitting as it's valentine's day, the idea is to come up with cal related names. so far, suggestions include cal and berk. another person is suggesting annie's name. new fellow be named number three. since this will be her third companion. her longtime mate, grinnell died in 2022. he was quickly replaced by alden, but

we're looking toward the holiday weekend where we have a pair of storms that will give us downpours and some gusty winds. today, though, no issues when it comes to any wet weather will be in and out of the clouds throughout the afternoon. partly sunny skies, temperatures mild and average 50s to low 60s for your daytime highs now. tomorrow that level one light system will bring a showers, mainly in the afternoon and in the evening. tomorrow morning looks pretty quiet. the evening commute tomorrow will have some slick conditions as this rain falls for most of us. a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain is what we're looking at. winds will be breezy from time to time, but we're not looking at any issues when it comes to those wind speeds. now, heading into the weekend, we are tracking a couple of storms. our first one arrives here saturday will likely bring us some rounds of heavy rain, some gusty winds as well, and then a second system. sunday day into monday will move through here and bring us more wet weather. a good estimate for a lot of us with these storms over the holiday weekend, we could see 1 to 3in of rain as that rain could be

operation to free a stuck fishing boat, continues near bodega bay. we first brought you this story yesterday morning. the coast guard says the 50 foot aleutian storm ran aground in rough water friday night. the ship's four crew members all made it out safely. now, rescuers are trying to pull the crab boat off the beach and back into the water. the coast guard says yesterday's attempt was not successful because the tow line broke. >> she does weigh about 57 tons and so everything we. to be a pretty heavy lift. and so it definitely has been challenging. but she is a steel hulled vessel, which is actually beneficial to her because she's not breaking up in the surf. >> the coast guard plans to offload fuel to lighten the vessel, but there are pollution concerns because the 1500 gallons of diesel on board could leak from the tanks. today we're expecting an update on how much longer the pacifica pier will remain closed. massive waves damaged the historic pier in

late december, forcing it to close for repairs. city officials originally said about half of the pier would be reopened by valentine's day. all plastic grocery bags will be banned in 2026 under a new bill making its way through the state legislature. a new report shows. the existing california bag laws are actually generating more trash in our landfills, not less. that's because the bags we use now are thicker than the type we used to get the one. the new ones, i should say, are supposed to be reused double, but most people just throw them away after one use and that's next. at 6.30 covid isolation guidelines, the new recommendations the cdc is reportedly expected to come out with and road reopens nearly two months after a fire destroyed businesses in the south bay. a busy street is back open to cars and as we head to break here at 627 live, look outside the sun just peeking up this morning.

topics where we've found common ground and they added that they do not expect any conflict to their flight schedules today and that any any flight attendants participating in the picket lines. you'll see out here today at sfo were not scheduled to work live at sfo. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you so much, lena. a new study has found that bay area residents could be at higher risk of developing cancer or dementia because of wildfire smoke. researchers from the first street foundation say. find particle pollution, the type that comes from wildfire smoke is rising in western states at the same time, it's dropping in other parts of the country. these pollutants have been linked to alzheimer's, dementia and cancer, according to the san francisco chronicle. counties like santa clara, alameda, sonoma and napa could see more than a month's worth of bad air per year by 2054. >> in the south bay, a fire that forced a street to close for nearly two months is back open

to cars. flames burned a strip mall on el camino real and los altos on christmas day. the road reopening came ahead of schedule for weeks. drivers had to detour around what's left of that strip mall now, demolition on the building is in its final stages. the city is hoping that bike lanes and sidewalks will soon reopen. >> we understand, and that it did cause some inconveniences, but we're glad that county fire was able to conduct their investigation in a safe manner. we're going to continue working efficiently and safely to be able to get those open for the community. >> it's still unclear what caused that fire. >> new this morning, the cdc is reportedly loosening its covid isolation recommendations for the first time since 2021, according to the washington post. the new guidelines include people who test positive will no longer have to stay home for five days. the agency is also planning to recommend people who use symptoms to determine when to end that isolation. people would not have to stay home if they have been fever free for at

least 24 hours without using medication, or their symptoms are mild and improving. california's attorney general is sponsoring a bill aimed at reducing an alarming rate of pregnancy related deaths among black women. the bill would require health providers to comply with a 2019 law that mandates anti-bias training for health care employees in california. black women make up 5% of pregnancies, but represent 21% of pregnancy related deaths statewide. attorney general rob bonta says the bill will correct the bias. some providers have that influences the way they treat patients. >> it would better enable us to truly take on the insidious implicit bias that's tearing families apart and most importantly, you know, not being overly dramatic here. it'll save lives. the new bill establishes deadlines for health care providers to provide anti-bias training for its employees. >> it also sets penalties for

noncompliance. >> shefs defense secretary lloyd austin has been forced to cancel a trip to brussels as he remains in the hospital, being treated for a bladder issue. glory is at the live desk following this, and gloria, what are we learning about the treatment that he's receiving there? >> well, julian austin is being treated at walter reed medical center in maryland. he was admitted on sunday, and the hospital says he was put under a general anesthesia for a non surgical procedures. now, this is the second time in less than two months that he's been in the hospital. last month, austin was treated for complications related to a recent prostate cancer surgery, and that visit caused some controversy after it was revealed that he spent several days in the hospital, but did not tell the president or other senior officials. he ended up apologizing for not informing people sooner. we did not handle this right and i did not handle this right. >> i should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis. i should have also told my team and the american

public that now, this time, austin made the stay public and transferred his duties to the deputy defense secretary. >> while he is being treated in the critical care unit, officials say they expect him to make a full recovery. julian >> thank you. gloria. this morning there is growing fallout after former president donald trump said he would encourage russia to attack nato allies who fail to meet agreed upon defense spending goals. trump has doubled down on this on social media, posting, quote, nato has to equalize and now nato countries don't pay set, don't pay set dues to the alliance and don't owe the us money. but they do commit to spending a certain amount on national defense and most of them have not reached that goal. the white house, underscoring nato's importance to national and european security, some republicans are pushing back on trump's comments. most are supporting it. >> but if you're not going to defend your own country, why should our taxpayers defend it for them? >> trump's republican rival for

the republican presidential nomination, nikki haley, also blasted his comments, warning the last thing they should do is side with russia's vladimir putin happening today. >> house republicans will try again to impeach homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas. a simple vote failed last week, but republicans believe they now have the necessary votes to get the effort passed, with majority leader steve scalise expected to return today following cancer treatments. if successful, mayorkas would be the first cabinet member impeached since 1876. house republicans claim he committed high crimes and misdemeanors for his handling of the southern border. he denies the accusations. >> we're seeing new images of israeli forces launching a daring operation to rescue two hostages from hamas. the two men were helicoptered to a hospital sunday night after more than four months in captivity. israel defense forces stormed a heavily armed building in rafah in the middle of the night, finding the
