lots of umbrellas out today on the embarcadero in san francisco . however, today on getting answers. if i can write your college essay, your job
3:01 pm
application cover letter, and even plan your next vacation, then surely it can help you find eternal love. that's what a new dating app hopes to accomplish. however, on this valentine's day , an anti-valentine's day movement is emerging. how to achieve happiness and self-worth outside of being coupled up. but first, not a lot of love for what's happening in san francisco these days. a just released annual poll shows a vast majority of residents say the city is on the wrong track. you're watching, getting answers. i'm kristin zee. we'll get to all those stories in just a minute. but first, some not so sweet news on this valentine's day. the rain has returned and we are on storm. watch today's storm is a level one on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale. we are expecting scattered showers as we head into the evening. if you have plans tonight, abc seven spencer christian is here now to track the hour by hour forecast. hey spencer. >> hey, kristen, you may not love today's valentine's day weather, but get ready to embrace the rain because we have a lot of it coming our way.
3:02 pm
here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see we've been talking about this series of storms all week long. and of course, the first and the weakest in the series is hitting us right now with mainly lightrillionainfall and showers, but there will be some locally heavy downpours from time to time. a stronger storm comes in on saturday. you can see that's not too far away right now. then on monday, an even stronger storm yet so let's take a look at what we have right now. we have widespread light rain and showers at this moment. some heavier rain moved through earlier. that's over in the inland east bay. i mean well to our east right now, but we'll close in on the central part of the bay area from san rafael down to the golden gate into san francisco, and onto the tip of the peninsula and eastward over to richmond, berkeley and oakland. we've got some mainly light rainfall right now. may get a little bit steadier later in the evening. so here's a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level one storm. as you as kristin pointed out through this evening, mainly light showers, briefly heavy downpours at times and breezy with slick roadways
3:03 pm
forecast animation starting at 5 p.m. shows how a decent organized the system is, so it's not widespread and steady rainfall, but at times various locations will receive some steady rain, perhaps even some downpours going into the 9:00 hour. very wet over in the livermore area down into tracy and into the south bay, into san jose. then later tonight, near 11 p.m. or just before midnight, we'll see the storm beginning to break up a bit, and overnight they'll just be little sprinkles trailing the main body of the storm. so going into tomorrow morning, we can expect a little bit of drying rainfall totals from this storm tonight, generally under a half inch. but now let's take a look at the stronger storms coming our way on the futurecast. you can see that on late friday, but into saturday mainly we'll have this level two storm coming in. and that's going to be quite a significant storm for saturday and saturday night, tapering off on sunday. but then late sunday into monday, the next storm rolls in. that will be a level two as well, and that'll be with us through monday and into tuesday. and that will produce a
3:04 pm
significant rainfall totals anywhere from well, by tuesday night, anywhere from about an inch and a half to two inches near the bay shoreline and into the east bay up in the north bay, we'll see over four inches in some locations. and while we're talking about precipitation, winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. tomorrow in the sierra. so rain here, snow there. and i'll give you a closer look at this on abc seven news at 4:00. kristen. >> very active. spencer. thank you. as more wet weather moves in, remember you can track the rain anytime with the same live doppler seven radar that spencer and our weather team uses. just search abc seven news bay area in your device's app store to download it now. now to a new snapshot of how san franciscans are feeling three weeks before the march election. that has lots of ballot measures and months before the san francisco mayoral election in november, the chamber of commerce conducts its city beat poll each year, surveying residents on a whole host of issues. the big headline this year for the question is
3:05 pm
san francisco on the right or wrong? track? 72% say wrong track. only 22% say right track. and there is more. joining us live now to talk about the results and what they mean. the president of the san francisco chamber of commerce, rodney fong . hey, rodney, thanks for joining us. >> good afternoon. >> thank you so real quickly for our viewers. why do you do this annual survey? what is it that chamber members, mostly businesses, want to know? and what do you hope the results will influence this? >> well, this survey is actually done every year for the past 15 or 20 years in a row. and the survey is to san francisco voters and residents. so it's not just businesses, but what we're seeing is that san franciscans no surprise, are frustrated with the actions that the city is are taking on as far as clean streets, and they want to be more aggressive as far as tax incentives and clean streets and fair policy, common sense policy that makes our streets texas go safe. i see. >> all right. well, you know, 72% saying the city is on the
3:06 pm
wrong track. that's certainly not great. but i understand that's actually an improvement from last year. is that right? it it actually is. >> and actually the signs are showing that residents are feeling that our economic condition of the city is actually better than it was a year ago. so there's a great sense of optimism, uh, going forward. but i think voters realize that we have to do some things that create that optimism . uh- perception of san francisco and the reality of san francisco. so tax incentives, 80, 88% feel that the downtown is thriving and needs to be incentivized, and 85% feel that the unused office spaces need to be converted for other uses. and 84% feel that tax incentives for small businesses, in particular, need to occur for them to stay or move into the downtown. >> so it seems like so many of those responses are sending the message strength in businesses, right? bring business back. create a good, hospitable environment for businesses. but i also want to look at some of the concerns, right. for the question you asked voters who feel safe visiting downtown right now, 61% say yes during
3:07 pm
the day, but only 34% say yes during the night. and that's kind of a problem for businesses that count on the nighttime activity, right? whether it's restaurants or nightclubs. so what are some proposals or solutions? well obviously more entertainment and events in the downtown are really going to bring that confidence level back. >> there was another question that is kind of parallel to this . and we polled those who have been in the downtown recently, and the survey shows that folks who have been in the downtown recently have much greater confidence about the downtown by personal experience. so, yes, activating the downtown, bringing more restaurants and nightlife, daytime activity and potentially using some of the empty space on vacant space to fill for different types of uses is really important for the downtown. >> are you also referring to. and this is more about businesses. the vacant to vibrant program that was recently launched, kind of giving rent free to small businesses.
3:08 pm
>> that's part of it. that's been a very successful program. but we've also seeing an uptick in small businesses opening in the downtown. and so, frankly, there's great opportunity for folks to be entrepreneurs, uh, folks, to expand their locations and san francisco neighborhoods, as you know, is are doing incredibly well. so we wouldn't be surprised to see a san francisco business opening a second location in the downtown. uh, it's a real opportunity, right. >> um, look, tied to that. businesses wanting to open up is the issue of crime. and in your survey, 69% say crime has gotten worse. now i should point out that data show reported crimes actually fell by 7% last year. though violent crime was up a little bit. so what are you guys thinking there? did you put any proposals out for the people to kind of respond to? >> well, i don't think it's any surprise that voters are frustrated and they want to vote for policies, um, that are common sense that allow san francisco to protect itself. for merchants to try to fight back
3:09 pm
against retail theft. and so we're seeing that frustration come out, and we're probably going to see it in the in the ballot boxes this coming march and november. >> there are some propositions on the march ballot. a couple of them relate to the issue of addressing crime. um, there's prop e right, expanding police surveillance and allowing more police chases, if you will, and prop f requiring drug screening and treatment as a condition to get cash assistance. what do what does this poll find with regard to what people think about that? >> i think we're going to have an incredible turnout. and, um, you know, if anyone's interested on sf chamber comm is some interesting, uh, the chamber's position on some of these ballot measures. but we're going to see , um, folks wanting to take part in protecting the city and voting for policies that, again, help the city remain safe and businesses to thrive. you know, the confidence of san francisco and is on the increase. and we're starting to see more businesses pop up. but we need to have people believe in the city and come downtown. and i'm down here every single day, and this downtown is growing and
3:10 pm
speeding up. and, uh, the people are out. so things are certainly happening. >> all right. well, rodney fong, really appreciate you coming on today to share the results of your latest city beat poll. thanks so much. >> thank you. >> coming up next, are you looking for love this valentine's day? would you leave the search to i? a new dating app is leveraging technology to make love connections i'm peter dixon and in kenya... we built a hospital that provides maternal care. as a marine... we fought against the taliban and their crimes against women. and in hillary clinton's state department... we took on gender-based violence in the congo. now extremists are banning abortion and contraception right here at home. so, i'm running for congress to help stop them. for your family... and mine. i approved this message because this is who we are. thousands of women with metastatic breast cancer are living in the moment

3:13 pm
it is velour. both the word and the app. >> yeah. so velour. the word comes from the spanish word for flying and the way that we think about the app is that it's kind of like a wingman or a wingman, and it's a little bit like giving you wings and helping you fly, but you're still in control. so that's kind of how we came up with the name. >> i gotcha, i gotcha okay, so how did you get the idea for this app? i understand you've been in tech a while. you were an executive at snap and uber before this, but what sparked this idea? yeah >> so i had a personal pain point for many years using data apps. i'm not sure if you ever used a dating app, but one of
3:14 pm
the major pain points is, you know, swiping photos is awesome. very fast, very easy. but then that second stage of reaching out to somebody and saying, hey, i'm ben, i'm super attractive, please respond to me or hopefully a better version of that. um, and then it's a waiting game, right? 90% of the time nobody responds, and 10% of the time i get, hey, ben. and then from there i need to jump start a uh- interesting conversation with a complete stranger and, uh, rinse and repeat over and over again. so, uh, that was a major pain point that i had on dating apps, and my friends did as well. and with this new wave of ai technology, i thought, hey, this could be a good tool to use to try to address this problem that i had using generative. i got it. >> okay, so this is not ai to help you find the best person to swipe on the most compatible person. it is to use ai to help you start that connection. communication what do i say? is that right? >> that's right. so when you go to la, you'll instantly see that
3:15 pm
it's a pretty different experience where you have a conversation with our ai matchmaker says, how would you introduce yourself? what are you looking for in a partner? and it's a conversation. rather than filling out a form and just uploading photos and trying to compete for having the coolest instagram photos. so as you're onboarding, you get to have a conversation. and through that conversation for an hour, i will try to simulate both your personality and your interest and then go on virtual dates with other people's eyes and they will have a simulated conversation that you can read and have a much better idea, uh, for any common interest or chemistry, see with the other person before you decide if you want to take over for the ai or not. >> wait, so it's your ai and the other person's ai. the first level of engagement is via how the ai into interprets you and t you like and what you want. >> that's right. so it's ai is talking to eyes initially, and then you read their ai conversation and decide, do you want to take over for the eyes or not? um, but i think that's
3:16 pm
it is an important distinction that anytime the eyes are talking to each other, we're make it. we make it very, very clear there's no chat bubble. and we say everything is, uh, simulated by ai above this line. now, after this line, everything is human to human. there's chat bubbles. and unfortunately or fortunately, at that point, you need to actually build the connection with the other person. >> okay. so this is just to help you get started. it's not doing all the work forever for you until you get to that. let's get married stage. i don't think i can or should, uh, do that. >> so it's still on the humans. okay wait, so does this improve your communication skills in some way in real life? >> by using this a lot of users and i would say i would include myself in in this, uh, find it very awkward to talk to strangers initially. >> and you don't know the person, right. how do you how do you start a conversation? and a lot of people have said, man, my ai is much better conversation starter than i am. and, uh, i feel that as well. and most people find that like continuing conversation is much easier than
3:17 pm
starting one with a stranger. and that's what we're hoping to do with bowler. >> okay, but ben, is the ai so good that it captures your essence and your personality. like, of course, if i tell it, i like archery, i like bowling. those are like kind of facts, right? but what about my humor and that kind of thing? >> so it tries to capture the best it can. now it depends on how much information you give it. if you do like a two minute onboarding session and imagine if you talk to a matchmaker for two minutes, there, understanding of you is going to be relatively limited, right? but if you spend a little bit more time, not only do they understand your interests like archery and bowling, but they can also get a sense for are you, you know, more casual or more formal or, um, you know, are you very serious or do you joke around a lot? uh, over time , the ai can have a better understanding of who you are, and you know, through that it can try to simulate conversations that are better reflection of who you are. >> okay? i mean, i suppose i could do that on chatgpt too, couldn't i? and then ben. right. kind of similar. >> yeah. you could uh, i would
3:18 pm
say chatgpt is not geared towards, uh, a dating context. and then on chatgpt, i don't think you can actually go on dates with other real humans, just not yet. um, so that part will be, uh, harder. >> not yet. but don't give sam altman any more ideas, okay? yeah. that guy could do it all, but, um. okay ben. so let me just ask you how. where are you operating and how many users do you have right now? i know you're pretty new. >> yeah, we just released about three weeks ago to, um, all of us, our biggest markets are, uh, bay area, um, la area. and then new york city area, which is, uh, not too surprising. >> okay. uh, of course not. here. um, what's the cost? >> oh, it's totally free to use, but, um, we do have a premium feature called boost. so if you purchase a boost, your message will automatically be at the top of the other person's, um, chat list. so those are optional. but, um, uh, but it is an option to pay for that. >> can anyone get on? >> yeah. well, i mean, it's 18
3:19 pm
plus. uh, it's 18 plus. you need to have a phone number, uh, to verify. so all of our users are real, and, uh, i need to verify their age, and, um, their identity. >> yeah, i was just going to say verification. i mean, on dating apps, that's a big issue, right? it's so often misrepresented. >> totally. so we do the, um, age and, um, identification upfront. um, but presuming that then it is free to use for anybody in the us. >> okay. um, what about chemistry? right. on paper and even on your screen, two people. will you know, like, they could seem like their perfect matches, but then there's that chemistry thing which i don't know how you get ai to learn that i don't think ai can completely solve this problem, but i would say that with this simulated conversation, it gives you a little bit better chance than just swiping, uh, six photos, which and in that sense, i think swiping photos is great, but it's really a competition. >> on to see who has the coolest photos. uh, i don't actually get to know the other person very well. um, so the simulated
3:20 pm
conversation, i wouldn't say you have 100% guarantee of a perfect chemistry match, but we have had users tell us that, um, through those conversations, they did match with people that they wouldn't have expected to, um, um, swipe, swipe right with, um, just by looking at photos because in our simulated conversation, i mean, this user described their own humor as a little bit weird and found the other person kind of had the weird sense of humor as well. yes uh, obvious and uh, through through a couple of photos. so we find that to be really awesome, where you could be missing out by swiping too quickly. >> right? oh, i believe that. any success stories yet? i mean, too soon for weddings? >> uh, definitely too soon for weddings or babies. just yet. uh, probably need to wait a little bit of time for that, but definitely multiple people have told me that they've escalated to like, text messaging and or many, um, meeting in person. so it's definitely working escalated to text messaging better. >> yeah. this is really neat. congratulations. can't wait to see where this goes. ben chang, founder of valor the new dating app using ai. happy valentine's
3:21 pm
day. >> yeah, happy valentine's day. thank you. >> all right. speaking of which, on this holiday, if you're still single, don't look at, you know, people who are coupled up enviously. you don't need to do that. a relationship expert is trying to change the mindset that something is wrong with being single
3:22 pm
3:23 pm
don't do to make yourself feel good while single. joining us live now with more on that is lucy meggison, host of the spinsterhood reimagined podcast. lucy welcome to the show. >> thank. you so much for having me. it's great to be here. how are you doing? >> oh, i'm doing just fine. you are in the uk right? >> i am, i'm in london. yeah, and you are a self-described spinster. yes. well i have well, yes, yes and no. because obviously the word spinster is a
3:24 pm
. word that people don't. it has so many incredibly negative connotations to it. so i would i would rarely describe myself as a spinster, but i decided very, very deliberately to call my podcast spinsterhood reimagined because i feel like it's something that needs the meaning around that word really needs reimagining and refreshing and changing, because there is just so much negative around single women in general. >> and so everything about valentine's. day, right? all the marketing, the messaging. ooh you got to be with someone. find your right someone, find your perfect someone. >> totally. which is why, you know, the whole sort of anti valentine's day thing i actually think is a really good thing because basically we, we tend to center romantic love and that one romantic relationship, we sort of put it at the very center of our world, and we expect everything else to kind of orbit around it. so i think it's good to de-center that as being the one main relationship in people's lives, because there are so many other relationships, and we can get love in so many
3:25 pm
other ways. and yeah, i mean, i was i don't think i was ever a huge fan of valentine's day, but but yeah, i mean, it's it is picking up. >> and by the way, if i might just point out, you know, i'm not sure in the uk, but in the us, the numbers are changing. in 1960, about 72% of the adult population had been married at some point by 1980, it was only 60% of the population. today only 50% of american adults have been married at some point. so definitely seems like there's less stigma. so. so tell us how do you think we could put ourselves at the center then? right. how do you find that as the source of happiness and build up from that? >> well, i always encourage women to go inwards because i personally believe that happiness comes from within, like we've all been led to believe that happiness will come when we meet the person or you know, we buy the house or we get the promotion person. but in actual fact, we have to learn
3:26 pm
how to generate our own happiness and actually one of, i think, one of the gifts of being single and not having kids is that we have that sort of extra time to spend doing that in a work and doing that personal growth and development work, which essentially makes every other area of your life that much better. and it improves all of your relationships across the board. so so as i say, it's something that i very much encourage all the single women that i talk to. and that's a lot , because when you have a podcast about being single and not having kids, you meet a lot of single women. but but one thing i will say is that, you know, and you just mentioned now, i mean, there is definitely a shift. there are so many more single people out there and having a podcast about single women, you realize how many fabulous, brilliant single women there are out there. and going back to the sort of the stigma and the negative connotations around the word spinster, i think when you think of that word, it conjures up this image of a sort of a sad, lonely woman who is kind of miserable and
3:27 pm
like, weeping at home with her cats. and it really isn't like that. or it certainly doesn't have to be like that. so i, i, i just want women to realize and know that they can be equally happy on their own as they can be in a relationship. and even if they get into a relationship somewhere down the line, it's about being happy in yourself, right. here, right now. >> that is true. they don't have to be exclusive. but in the 30 minutes or 30s sorry that we have left, how can we celebrate ourselves on a day like today? what are the little things that we can do for ourselves? >> well, i would say just do just lean into something that brings you joy. it's just all about finding those things that bring you joy. and that can be the simplest thing. like going for a walk in nature or hanging out with your pets or hanging out with a friend, or a or a family member. and there are so many ways that we can bring ourselves joy. and in fact, i had a i was on a call earlier with some of my the women in my membership thrive solo, and one
3:28 pm
of the women was telling us about how she had gone and bought herself flowers and a card, and it had just given her a real boost. i know we are out of time, but happy valentine's day, thank you and you all conservative republican steve garvey is the wrong choice for the senate. ...our republican opponent here on this stage has voted for donald trump twice. mr. garvey, you voted for him twice... as your own man, what is your decision? garvey is wrong for california. but garvey's surging in the polls. fox news says garvey would be a boost to republican control of the senate. stop garvey. adam schiff for senate. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message.
