is america this morning. >> good morning, everyone, and happy memorial day. i'm andrea fujii in for rhiannon and i'm andrew dymburt. >> we begin with the weather emergency and disaster declarations in multiple states. at least 18 people have been killed in the latest tornado outbreak. >> the governor of kentucky declaring an emergency overnight. but the hardest hit area is north of dallas, texas, where two children from the same family are among the dead. this tornado season has already been above average in activity, and more storms are expected from alabama to atlanta, up to new jersey today. >> we could also see flash flooding across multiple states today, but we begin with those deadly twisters overnight, the death toll climbing in the wake of a multi-state tornado outbreak. at least 18 people have now died after two dozen twisters swept across the plains and the south, putting 45 million people in the path of danger. the minute we got inside, we saw everybody and the whole room just it exploded.

>> just that fast. >> among those killed in texas, a two year old and a five year old, both from the same family, after a tornado hit the small town of valley view north of dallas. >> it's been a harrowing week, with lives lost, property reduced to rubble. they had no way of knowing how the family would be literally crushed by this horrific storm. >> another group of nearly 50 people rode out that same tornado by hiding in a gas station bathroom in oklahoma. a long lasting twister laid waste to homes, staying on the ground for nearly 45 minutes, and in neighboring arkansas, tried to make it to the hallway. >> that's the most central part of our house, and that's when we realized we didn't have a roof. >> an ef2 tearing through multiple towns, leveling buildings, and littering streets with uprooted trees. farther north, this twister whipping through southern illinois, another touching down in missouri, torrential rains swamping saint louis, waves of water rushing down the stairs at

busch stadium, delaying the cardinals game by two hours. in indiana, thunderstorms postponed the indy 500 by more than four hours. more severe storms are expected today from alabama and georgia up the east coast to new jersey, and we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> breaking overnight, more than 2000 people are now believed to be buried after a landslide in papua new guinea. that's according to the local government. there rescuers are digging through rocks and mud, hoping to find survivors, as a mountainside gave way during heavy rain friday, burying a remote village in the northern part of the country for the second time in less than a week. >> passengers on an international flight have been injured by severe turbulence. 12 people were injured when a qatar airways flight that hit turbulence on the way to dublin. eight people were treated at a hospital and last week one man was killed and dozens were injured by turbulence on a singapore airlines flight. the airline is now changing its safety policy, no longer providing meal service when the seatbelt sign is on. >> now to the race for the white house. and former president

four years. >> independent candidate rfk jr also booed when he spoke, although he got a warmer reception than trump, kennedy was eliminated in the first round of voting. kennedy responded, saying i would have accepted the nomination if offered because independents and third parties need to unite right now to reclaim our country from the corrupt two party system. in a year when many voters say they're not excited about either major party candidate, the third party candidates could have a bigger impact than ever on the race. chase oliver is a former georgia senate candidate who describes himself as armed and gay, and vows to appeal to younger voters angry about the israel-hamas war. >> well, we are going to be hitting the campaign trail hard and fast as soon as we can, an absolute we're going to be fighting to be a contrast to the elitists that are donald trump, joe biden and, yes, even robert kennedy. >> as for trump, love you got it all. he had a friendlier crowd at a nascar race in north carolina last night, dodging questions about his hush money

trial, which is set to wrap up with closing arguments tomorrow. >> it's going to be a great race. >> and then meanwhile, special prosecutor jack smith is now asking trump to be placed under a gag order in his classified documents case in florida. smith says trump's remarks online have put law enforcement at risk. >> andrew barry, thank you. an israeli airstrike in the southern gaza city of rafah has left at least 50 people dead, according to aid officials, including mothers and children trapped in burning debris. the israeli military says it was targeting a hamas compound and two senior hamas officials were killed. the missiles hit makeshift shelters housing displaced palestinians next to un warehouses. the airstrike came after hamas rockets set off sirens in tel aviv for the first time in months. but no major damage was reported. >> now to a stabbing rampage at a movie theater during the busy holiday weekend, several young girls in massachusetts apparently attacked at random, and police say this was only one

incident during the suspect's violent crime spree, they don't want to go to the movies ever again. >> this morning, the mother of three girls stabbed in what's being described as an unprovoked attack at this movie theater near boston is describing the frightening moments. >> they are terrified that they could just go to a movie on a saturday night. and this could happen. >> authorities say 26 year old jared ravizza walked into the theater in braintree and stabbed four girls, three of them sisters as young as nine years old. >> they were like in the second row, and he came up behind them. my oldest was leaned over to get something. he got her in the back and then my other daughter in the top, chest and then, my last daughter across her arm, laughing the whole time, and then got their friend and then ran off. >> police say ravizza, who fled in a black porsche, then drove to a mcdonald's in nearby plymouth, where police say he stabbed a worker through the drive through window before entering the restaurant to stab

another police, then pursuing him to cape cod before they say he crashed and was arrested. and now our affiliate, wcvb reports. ravizza is being investigated for a possible connection to a murder in connecticut. ravizza is from a wealthy town on the island of martha's vineyard, where the local newspaper quotes residents saying the suspect was known for his hostile interactions in public. the martha's vineyard times also citing an active police case involving ravizza in connection with the restraining order. well, still no word on a possible motive for the stabbings. the victims, including those four girls, are expected to fully recover. >> time now for your memorial day weather forecast. well, on this holiday, rip current warnings are posted along beaches in galveston, texas, after one person died and a dozen others had to be rescued from rough waters. heavy rain makes flash flooding a threat in several states this morning, with the threat of severe storms moving east, areas from alabama to new jersey could see damaging

video obtained by wabc shows the victim shirtless after the most recent attack. he says he used his body to protect his fiancee. >> we turn now to the killing of a well-known tv actor. police say it was all over his car's catalytic converter. this morning, an urgent search for suspects after the killing of former general hospital star johnny wactor. >> we were together, sasha. i wasn't thinking about anything other than just you and me. >> best known for his role as brando on the long running soap wactor was shot in downtown los angeles after police say he found a group of thieves around his car. police say he was with a friend when he caught three people huddled around the vehicle and initially thought the car was getting towed. but investigators say the group was trying to steal the catalytic converter. a car part that's become a common target for thieves across the country because of its valuable metal components. >> we've seen where they quickly like nascar. they get the jacks, them up, cut them off, keep an

eye out for security, and the cops walk out of here and get these items 300 bucks a piece generally, and making 10 or 20 a night. >> witnesses say before wactor could even confront the thieves, one opened fire. all three then sped off in another car. wactor died a short time later. in addition to daytime tv, he was also a familiar face on primetime tv, having starred on criminal minds and ncis. his death prompting an outpouring of support. general hospital posting this tribute saying he was truly one of a kind and a pleasure to work with each and every day. his mother saying there are not enough words to tell what a beautiful soul he was. johnny would have given him the car. there is a very large hole on our hearts and lives. while police overnight did not release any details on the suspect's bizarre assault in florida, police say anne marie luna was arrested in saint petersburg after striking a man in the neck with a cinnamon roll. >> the man was not injured but
