because president biden is about to address the nation from the oval office concerning the attempted assassination of former president donald trump expecting to call for unity and to call for americans to condemn political violence across the nation. the investigation into this horrific act is moving quickly, and of course, by now, the world has seen these images. donald trump taking the stage for his rally in butler, pennsylvania, last night. it was 8 1/2 minutes or so after walking on the stage, a gunman opening fire. trump's right here was hit. the president seen reaching for the ear. you can hear the screams in the video. secret service rushing the stage. tonight, law enforcement revealing new details about the alleged gunman, 20-year-old thomas crooks of bethel pack, pennsylvania. used an ar-style rifle owned by his father. a photograph by doug mills appearing to show the bullets close to trump's head.

his hand pulling away, blood clearly on his fingers. the secret service says the suspect was armed with that rifle that was legally purchased by his father. tonight, we want to listen to the president as he now addresses the nation about this political violence, this attempted assassination. let's listen to the president. >> fellow americans, i want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. and to remember, while we may disagree, we're not enemies. we're neighbors. we're friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we're fellow americans. we must stand together. yesterday's shooting at donald trump's rally in pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back. take stock of where we are, how we go forward from here. thankfully, former trump is not seriously injured. i spoke with him last night. i'm grateful he's doing well, and jill and i keep him and his family in our prayers.

we also extend our deepest condolences of the victims. corey was a husband, a father, a volunteer firefighter, a hero. sheltering his family tromthose bullets. we should all hold his family and all those injured in our prayers. earlier today, i spoke about an ongoing investigation. we do not know the motive of the shooter yet. we don't know his opinions or affiliations. we don't know whether he had help or support. or if he communicated with anyone else. law enforcement professionals, as i speak, are investigating those questions. tonight, i want to speak to what we do know. a former president was shot. and american citizen killed while simply exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choosing. we cannot, we must not go down this road in america. we have traveled before throughout our history. violence has never been the answer. whether it's with members of congress and both parties being

targeted and shot or a violent mob attacking the capitol on january 6th, or brutal attack on the spouse of former speaker of the house nancy pelosi. information and intimidation on election officials, or the kidnapping plot against the sitting governor. or an attempted assassination on donald trump. there's no place in america for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. period. no exceptions. we can't allow this violence to be normalized. you know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool it down. we all have responsibility to do that. yes, we have deeply felt strong disagreements. the stakes in this election are enormously high. i have said it many times. that the choice in this election -- we make in this election is going to shape the future of america and the world for decades to come. i believe that with all my soul. i know that millions of my

fellow americans believe it as well. and some have a different view as to the direction our country should take. disagreement is inevitable in american democracy. it's part of human natures. politics must never be a literal battlefield or god forbid a killing field. i believe it should be a peaceful debate to pursue justice, to make decisions guided by the declaration of independence and our constitution. we stand for an america, not of extremism and fury but of decency and grace. all of us now face a time of testing as this election approaches. the higher the stakes the more fervent the passions become. this places an added burden on each of us to insure that no matter how strong our convictions we must never descend into violence. republican convention will start tomorrow. i have no doubt they'll criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country. i'll be traveling this week making the case for our record

and the vision, my vision of the country, our vision. i'll continue to speak out strongly for our democracy. stand up for our constitution, the rule of law, to call for action at the ballot box, no violence on our streets. that how democracies should work. we debate and disagree. we compare and contrast the character of the candidates. the records, the issues, the agenda, the vision for america. but in america, we resolve our differences at the ballot box. now, that's how we do it, at the ballot box, not with bullets. the power to change america should always rest in the hands of the people. not in the hands of would-be assassins. you know, the past for through competing visions of the campaign should be resolved peacefully, not through acts of violence. you know, we're blessed to live in the greatest country on earth and i believe that with every soul, every power of my being. so tonight, i'm asking every

american to recommit to make america what -- think about it, what's made america so special? here in america, everyone is treated with dignity and respect. and hate must have no safe harbor. here in america, we need to get out of our silos where we only listen to whom we agree, where misinformation is rampant, where foreign actors fan the flames to shape the outcomes consistent with their interests, not ours. let's remember here in america, while unity is the most elusive of goals now, nothing is more important for us now. and standing together, we can do this. you know, in the beginning, our founders understood the power of passion so they created a democracy. it gave reason and balance a chance to prevail over brute force. that's the america we must be. american democracy, arguments are made in good faith.

seen leaving his home in bedminster, new jersey, sunday afternoon ahead of traveling to milwaukee for the republican national convention. this just a day after what the fbi says was an attempted assassination at a rally in pennsylvania. >> take a look at what happened. >> gunfire erupting just minutes into his speech, the former president grabbing his right ear, ducking behind the podium. secret service agents then rushing to shield him, then lifting him to his feet and escorting him to a vehicle as he pumped his fist in the air, trump revealing he was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my ear. today, trump, posting on social media calling for americans to stand united. two people were critically injured and one person in the crowd was killed. identified as cory carpenter, his family posting tributes to him online. >> corey was a girl dad. corey was a firefighter. pory dove on his family to protect them last night, the secret service saying

they neutralized the suspected gunman, who the fbi has now identified as 20 year old thomas matthew crooks. >> investigators confirming to abc news they believe this screen shot now part of their ongoing investigation, shows the suspect receiving his high school diploma. the ar 15 style rifle recovered at the scene was legally purchased by the suspect's father, according to multiple law enforcement sources. this image shows the roof where investigators say the shots were fired in proximity to the former president. preliminary investigations say this area was looked at as part of security sweeps, law enforcement sources tell abc news. later, there were reports of suspicious activity. a former secret service agent says the sniper had just seconds to react until he identified it as a threat. >> it was an individual from 200 yards moving on a rooftop. he had a very difficult job, identified the threat and neutralized it within a second. >> the president briefed on the investigation sunday before addressing the nation. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence or any

violence for that matter. an assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. >> everything with the republican national convention set to kick off here in milwaukee on monday, president biden says he's directed the secret service to review all security protocols here. but the secret service says there are currently no credible threats. jay o'brien abc news, milwaukee. >> jay, thank you very much. taking a live look now at milwaukee, wisconsin, where the republican national convention kicks off tomorrow. former president trump landed in the city a few hours ago. secret service says it is not expanding its security perimeter for the convention, and that there are no known threats against the event. 61 law enforcement officers from california are there helping with security. governor gavin newsom's office says the support from california has been planned for months. here in the bay area, there were prayers for healing and unity at local sunday church services.

following the assassination attempt on former president trump. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke with clergy members and trump supporters. cornell, at least with the folks you talked with, is it clear now that everyone is denouncing that violence? >> yeah, jr. everyone agrees no tolerance for violence anywhere in america, many telling us they are thankful the former president wasn't seriously injured. and now they're praying for the nation. for the time for prayer and reflection at san francisco's grace cathedral, reverend anna rossi paused for a moment of silence for the welfare of the nation following saturday's assassination attempt on former president trump and the death of a campaign supporter. >> we decry the violence that took place and we mourn the loss of life. >> church leaders calling for healing and unity. >> violence of any kind, but most especially political violence, is not a way to heal a

society. and we're a society that desperately needs healing. >> it's very sad that this happened yesterday. >> congregation members condemning the violence, sending trump good wishes. >> i will pray for his well-being today here at grace cathedral, and i hope that everything works out well for him. >> christopher o'banion came to church with the hope gun violence across the nation will stop here. >> now, you know next president is being shot. and so, you know that lawlessness just needs to stop horrific beyond in the east bay, trump supporters were out early sunday morning in lafayette waving flags on this highway 24 overpass. >> so we're out here in support of president trump. obviously. what a tragedy that anyone would want to take another person's life. nobody needs to bring violence into a political decision.

half moon bay. a little bit of a low cloudiness over the golden gate. right now we have 68 degrees up north at petaluma, mid 70s at santa rosa and napa, mid to upper 80s at fairfield, concord and livermore. warm but not hot. and these are our forecast headlines overnight clouds and fog will develop. but by this because of this cooling marine layer next few days we'll see near average temperatures. so no extremes until later in the week when the inland heat returns. now overnight we'll see an increase in clouds and some patchy drizzle developing in the overnight and early morning hours, mainly near the coast. overnight low temperatures will be in the upper 50s to about 60 degrees. highs tomorrow under mainly sunny afternoon skies, a low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline. mid to upper 80s inland. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. and look at the first three four days of the week. well first three days certainly through wednesday. a nice seasonal pattern of mild or mild to warm temperatures, but the heat returns to the inland areas on thursday, especially on friday, with upper 90s as the highs, and
