>> some bart stations are still closed this afternoon. >> i'm anser hassan at the san francisco bay oakland international airport. we'll tell you what's behind these white walls and what it means for passengers. >> plus, students at one bay area school district are kicking off the new school year without their cell phones. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. >> i'm larry beil and i'm kristen z. major delays today for bart passengers. a network computer outage temporarily shut down service at multiple stations. >> now, at one point, that closure stretched between the berryessa station in san jose. all the way to hayward. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in fremont now at one of the stations that is still closed. zach >> yeah, this all started at ten this morning and it impacted all of those stations you mentioned. but just before noon, the three southernmost stations did reopen. but still hayward, between north fremont, where we are right now, is still closed. bart saying it's all due to that computer issue. gates were closed and system monitors blank

at the berryessa bart station in north san jose, leaving some bart passengers and even employees confused. >> we're roaming to the other side, and then we see, like, almost all the gates are closed and people are just exiting. and so we asked them like, oh, what's going on? and they're like, oh, the busses, the trains are shut down. something happened in the, the computers at one point thursday morning. >> it was a similar scene at all bart stations serving the green and orange lines between hayward and north san jose, though three stations in south fremont, milpitas and san jose did eventually reopen before noon. bart officials telling us that its system experience and network computer shut down. >> one of the reasons we're not running trains is out of that abundance of caution for safety. whenever anything impacts the train control system, that requires us to respond and to be assured that that is working properly, because that system is what allows us to avoid any sort of, collisions on the system. this latest issue comes almost two weeks after an electrical fire that forced several bart

stations to close in oakland. >> ripple effects from those closures caused delays in service that lasted for days after. >> it does appear to be separate issues, but certainly any time that we can provide service that is not reliable and not what our riders are typically expecting, that's a disappointment for us as much as them. >> passengers impacted by the latest shutdowns were encouraged to find other transportation and also offered alternatives. >> there is mutual aid from both ac transit and vta that means they are honoring bart fare. if somebody already paid to get to on the bart system, they can use those busses without a charge, and there is also a bus bridge, an additional bus bridge still for many of the passengers, it's been a frustrating day. >> i was coming out, going out to go visit family. so there's there is a chance i might not be able to today, and i might have to just do it till tomorrow. it is a bit of an inconvenience. the real inconvenience for me is more of i had to come from the other side of town to get here. >> yeah, a lot of people still coming up to the station right now just to find out that it's

closed. now. the latest update we got from bart was at 320, and really not much of an update other than to say that those four stations hayward, south, hayward, union city and right here in northern fremont are still closed with bus bridge being provided. we'll continue to track all updates for you right now. live in fremont. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all right, zach, thank you. a lockdown on the uc berkeley campus has been lifted. now after hours long search for a suspected shooter came up empty. it all began around 715. this morning following reports of shots fired near the clark kerr campus that is a residential dorm area. one neighbor we spoke with said he heard the shots. >> i was laying in bed about 737. i don't know what time, and i thought i heard a pop, you know, a gunshot. and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, all you heard was sirens and everything going off for about ten minutes. >> so for several hours, the public was asked to avoid the area of the clark kerr campus and the area around the lawrence berkeley national lab and the botanical garden. this is video from sky seven. you see

authorities searching a home on panoramic way around 2:00 this afternoon. officers left, though without finding anything there. witnesses described the suspect still on the loose as a white male with bleached hair. possible red or orange highlights. they say he had a black shirt, black pants and was carrying a red backpack. >> more trouble for the tow truck company, whose truck was captured on video in april. trying to tow a moving vehicle in downtown san francisco. that tow truck company was banned from operating in san francisco after that incident, and today, fbi agents raided several sites connected to specialty towing. abc seven news has learned two people were detained on federal charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. it's all apparently tied to a scheme to defraud an auto insurance company. a neighbor at one of the raid locations told our reporter luz pena she heard what sounded like a flashbang go off around dawn, and then looked out to see agents with weapons drawn. >> yo, no estaba apuntando.

>> i didn't see them shoot anybody, but i did see them point to the location. >> one of the detainees, jose vicente badillo, operates two towing businesses in san francisco. jose's towing and auto towing, which is affiliated with specialty towing. dozens of people living in rvs along one san francisco street will soon be on the move again. today, authorities began citing vehicles parked on zoo road, letting owners know they must be out by this sunday. at least one vehicle was already towed away. owners are upset, telling abc seven news they just don't know where else to go. some of these vehicles just moved to this location from winston drive between lake merced and stonestown galleria, where they were parked for years. they were ordered out ahead of a repaving project that's scheduled for next month. >> former president trump and vice president kamala harris are ready to debate today. trump agreed to the face off on september 10th right here on abc at a news conference today, trump said he was looking forward to debating harris and

that he has agreed to debates with nbc and fox, in addition to abc. oakland mayor santo, who faces a recall vote in november, is fending off powerful new calls for her to resign immediately. this week, the oakland police officers association asked the mayor to step down. they say the city is a more dangerous place now as a result of her leadership. earlier today, i spoke with mayor tao on our midday newscast about those claims. >> it was not actually the whole association. you know, i want to commend all of our working officers who come in day in and day out to do the hard work driving crime down. and so what this is, is that it is a four member executive team who took this unanimous vote of four members of the opoa executive board, who is calling for this and who is stating actual fact. i mean, false facts, right? crime is trending down and that is because of the great work of our officers. and i have received so many calls from our

rank and file, so many calls from officers who are doing the right work every day to say, we do not stand with this statemen. >> leaders of the oakland police officers association have said they will back the recall efforts unless the mayor resigns. >> building a better bay area includes making changes to improve education, as well as mental health. and for one school district, that means keeping cell phones out of classrooms. >> abc seven news reporter ryan curry was at mount diablo high school, where the changes are taking place. >> new classes, new teachers and new opportunities. but on this first day of class for mount diablo high school, there is a big new rule everyone has to adjust to. >> we got these on orientation day. it was kind of like mandatory. it was one of the big things. we didn't really care about classes or anything like that. it was yonder pouches and data. >> nicky klosinski is holding a new pouch that will carry her phone while she is in class. they are from a company called yonder who makes these pouches specifically designed to get people off their phones. >> we have to use it. we can't

unlock it at all. we can't have it during lunch, brunch, anything. only for emergencies. >> every day. students have to put their phones in these pouches, seal them, and they won't be able to get them back until the end of the day. >> students were finding that they were more engaged in class, that they were actually meeting people on campus, that they had never met before, and during during lunch time. and passing periods. >> the district is joining others around the bay area in instituting this new policy. studies have shown that student cell phone use can lead to increased anxiety, bullying, and even suicide rates. but there are also academic improvements. one study by the university of texas in 2015 showed test scores rose as much as 6% after cell phone bans were enacted, superintendent clark says as students return from pandemic home schooling, phones had been their only link to the outside world. >> what we were finding as we were doing class visits and walking around campuses that students were on their phones all the time. and as we're talking to teachers and even talking to students and students, actually admitting, like i'm watching tiktok during class and i should be paying

attention to the teacher. >> but on the first day, kluczynski says it hasn't been a smooth transition. >> second period a lot of kids still don't have it to lunch, and that's about 4 or 5 periods in. so it seems like they can't get to every kid, and it's just it's completely wreaking havoc. kids are getting in trouble for just having them on them, even though they haven't got their pouches yet. >> expect the trend to continue. the governor has called on legislature to restrict cell phone use in schools statewide in concord. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> in the south bay, san jose unified is one of the bay area school districts where students went back to school. today, it's only august eighth. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez went to san jose for morning drop off. >> it's the first day for students at willow glen middle school in san jose. and yes, mom still wants to take a picture. a little nervous and happy. >> exciting and nervous because it's new for parents. >> safety is top of mind.

>> i always walk to school, so i always get out of my car and take that to school and see them off, and then leave from there. >> so far, we didn't find any trouble on crossing, crossing and all the way to malone to here. >> san jose is urging drivers to slow down when they're around school zones and look out for students walking to and from campuses. colin haynie with the san jose department of transportation, says the police department is going to be stepping up enforcement around schools, and there's more. >> we're going to be rolling out electronic message boards near school sites where we know there's high, high traffic volumes or high traffic speeds nearby. we also have a school safety initiative that has begun a long project of upgrading hundreds of crosswalks near schools to high visibility crosswalks, to crosswalks like this one, referred to as a ladder style. >> you can see it has lines on the outside, and haney says this makes them more visible to cars from a greater distance away. in

you'd be willing to pay for such content. in the meantime, we have weather to talk about. >> hopefully somebody sold on that idea. larry. kristen, let me show you our air quality right now. let's talk about the air quality advisory that has been issued for the bay area by the air district. purple air, you will notice, has a lot more sensors, but they're not the official reporting agency. you will notice a lot of poor air quality in the inland east bay right now, indicated by the oranges and the reds. the air now website, which is the official reporting agency, showing you moderate air quality across parts of the east bay, but it doesn't have as much in terms of the number of sensors. now, when you combine what's happening in the atmosphere, it's pretty clear that we do have some smoke and haze impacting us. and so they are basically saying that the smoke from wildfires in the western u.s. and canada will continue to impact us. going into tomorrow morning. you'll see that haze and it continues into tomorrow night. air quality advisory up

suspect names. austria's interior ministry says the 19 year old suspect was radicalized online, preparing for the attack since last month, researching bomb making techniques. austrian officials searching the suspect's home, finding possible explosives. authorities say the suspect quit his job july 25th and mentioned he had big plans ahead. the head of security and intelligence saying the 19 year old fully confessed during an interrogation. three of swift's sold out vienna concerts now canceled. disappointing fans. >> they said that the concert is canceled. and i just started crying in the restaurant. >> swift's team releasing a statement saying we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone's safety. after austrian police said that an abstract danger remained. >> this is an epic tour and i'm actually heartbroken. >> alison strauss traveled to vienna from new jersey with her son andrew, excited to see swift in concert for the first time. but she's understanding of the decision in today's world.

that is an element of damages that they should be asking the jury for the head of the board investigating the incident says they found no evidence passengers were aware of their fate. >> uh- former home depot employee is suing for age discrimination and wrongful termination. the 72 year old was fired for failing to stop fraudulent purchases worth thousands of dollars. >> the incident happened at the san ramon home depot just months after a loss prevention officer was shot and killed at a pleasanton home depot while trying to stop a theft attempt, and abc7 news i-team reporter melanie woodrow is here with the details on this. >> larry and kristin, we hear a lot about theft in the bay area. this one is a little bit different. carlene acevedo says that she was fired from home depot last july for creating a security or loss prevention risk that was according to her termination letter. she says she felt scared and intimidated by the person who was at her register, who was paying with a suspicious card. >> your phenomenal in every way. we are grateful to have you. >> during her seven years

working as a cashier at the san ramon home depot, carlene acevedo says she won multiple awards for exceptional service, including cashier of the year in 2021. i loved working there, but last july, home depot fired acevedo after she rung up for fraudulent transactions, resulting in a more than $5,000 loss for home depot. >> i was so upset, i just i just wanted to get out of there. i was, i was i never, never been fired before. >> acevedo says she was working alone in the garden center when a man approached her cash register with a card that had written instructions on the back to process the transaction. as cash. she rung up a purchase for a little more than $1,300. >> the card was suspicious. it was very suspicious, but i went ahead and ran it. >> approximately 30 minutes later, she says. the customer returned. >> and then i knew for sure that he was targeting me because i was alone. >> acevedo says she tried to call her supervisor the head cashier, but no one answered. >> he was demanding he wanted the transaction done as fast as

possible. he got upset when i made the phone call to my manager. i was scared. >> according to her termination letter, acevedo ran three additional separate transactions as cash, this time for more than $4,000. she says she kept duplicate copies of the receipts that she took to her manager. >> four days later, i got fired. the incident happened three months after pleasanton home depot lost prevention officer blake mose was shot and killed while trying to stop a theft attempt, a story acevedo was familiar with. >> it was devastating. >> i mean, it was sad, acevedo says. >> as an employee, she received annual computer based training by home depot on what to do in the event of a shoplifting or active shooter. what were you instructed to do? >> i was instructed not to do a thing. do not touch. do not try to, dissuade, not to interfere. just let them go. >> she was doing everything she could. she asked for back up. she's making copies of the receipt. you know, she can't risk her life for merchandise.
