>> always live abc seven news starts right now >> well, we're going to tell you something that you would only see in san francisco. waymo. robo taxis have suddenly taken over a city parking lot, and it's disturbing the peace and sleep of the residents nearby. and tonight they aren't really sure what to do. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. it's a really bizarre sight, but just the latest in some interesting incidents on city roads. >> that's right. we have seen these waymo cars have a few hiccups in their first year of fully autonomous driving. but nothing quite like this. not at all. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is hearing from these frustrated neighbors, now finding themselves next to a nonstop racket. >> for the past few weeks, randall white has been dealing with a persistent and annoying problem right outside his san francisco condo.

>> so i was like, where is that coming from? i looked down and i was like, i think it's coming from the waymo cars, this parking lot full of driverless waymo cars has had multiple incidents where suddenly the vehicles become confused and start honking all at each other. >> white says he heard it for the first time about two weeks ago, after he was woken up around 4 a.m. then it happened again, and again, and i started thinking, well, this is an issue. white isn't the only one who's had issues with the noise, either. several people who live in the buildings nearby, the parking lot have also had similar complaints. >> over the past two weeks. i've been woken up more times overnight than i have combined over 20 years. >> russell popovski lives in a building adjacent to white. he says the honking incidents have happened at random times during both the day and night, and have started to take a toll on him. >> i could not be more cranky today for a monday after these past two weeks. it's really at a high level. it's just really, really it's tough. it affects the way you, you feel. >> white says he and others have

reached out to waymo about the issue. in a statement sent to abc seven news, waymo says, quote, we are aware that in some scenarios, our vehicles may briefly honk while navigating our parking lots. we have identified the cause and are in the process of implementing a fix. white says monday afternoon was the first time the honking seems to have gotten better. despite the inconvenience, he tells me he's still a fan of the autonomous vehicle company and uses the cars on a regular basis. >> and so i was all about it until the honking started. and all i really want is resolution in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> and there they go. another waymo story. get ready. waymo announced it is now bringing its driverless fleet to freeways in san francisco, starting this week. for the time being, only waymo employees are able to utilize the freeway rides. >> there was a suspicious plume of smoke seen in the south bay. crews had to jump to four different spot fires in campbell. they're all under investigation tonight and thought to be suspicious. all

four burned vegetation along northbound 17 between campbell and hamilton avenues. firefighters quickly stopped forward progress just after six this evening, with only some fencing damaged. new tonight a significant set of bills aimed at fighting retail theft is heading to the governor's desk. state lawmakers passed the package today in a bipartisan vote. the bills would allow for stiffer penalties for serial retail thieves, among other reforms. come november, voters will weigh in on a different approach. proposition 36 would also increase the consequences for chronic theft as well as drug possession. it would also roll back sentencing reform, passed a decade ago. >> happening tomorrow perhaps a major development in an infamous murder case. prosecutors in santa clara county say they'll have a news. they will have news to share in the killing of michael tyree. tyree was beaten to death in the main county jail back in 2015. three guards were accused of attacking him in his cell back in 2017, a jury convicted all three men of second degree murder a year

later, the guards appealed using a new state law. courts then agreed to overturn their convictions. that was in 2022. since then, the da's office has been getting ready to retry this case. now, it's not clear if that's tomorrow's announcement or if there's some other news, but of course we will stay on top of it and update you either way. >> a major change for health care in the south bay tonight, and many are not happy this vigil tonight decried the loss of some emergency care at regional medical center today. the hospital in east san jose downgraded the services at its trauma center. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez talked to health care advocates concerned about the side effect. what do we want? >> health care? when do we want it? >> now. monday night, a group of south bay community members challenged a national hospital corporation. they held a vigil to honor the lives they claim will be at risk. they're calling out hca healthcare, which owns regional medical center of san

jose, and good samaritan hospital. >> it's very much an effort that we're seeing for them to put people profit over people and actually expand. one hospital on the west side and take services away from the east side. >> earlier this year, it was announced that aamc's trauma center would close completely, but later announcing as of monday, august 12th, their trauma center would be downgraded from a level two to level three, and in that gap will follow the lives of patients and disproportionately patients who are underinsured or struggle to keep insurance for weeks. some staff at mercy city leaders and community members have rallied to say the move will impact low income families in east san jose. a downgrade isn't, you know, a restaurant downgrade or it's not something where it's an extra. >> we're talking about someone's health, we're talking about somebody's life. >> according to the american trauma society, the different levels refer to the kinds of resources available. level one is the highest level of care.

level two is able to initiate care for all injured patients, and a level three can provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, and intensive care. aamc says modifications will also be made to the heart attack and stroke programs. pasado three stroke teresita garcia said she had three strokes, and it was thanks to aamc's department. she's still here and able to advocate for her community. we reached out to hca healthcare regarding plans for good samaritan and aamc, and we're still waiting for a statement back. in the meantime, these san jose residents say they will continue to fight, which is why we're here mourning their disregard for our lives. >> but also, as these candles are lit, a reminder that this fire is still burning in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> physicians with sutter health are continuing their demands for a new contract. they were back

on the picket line today, holding a rally outside california pacific medical center's venice campus in san francisco. their union has been in negotiations with sutter health for more than nine months. representatives say frontline doctors sometimes work up to 80 hours a week across all four hospital campuses. they're asking for improved working conditions and a pay raise beyond the 1% they say is currently being offered. >> i have $350,000 in medical school debt, and i live in the second most expensive city in the united states. >> 1% is not going to pay my student loans, and 1% is not going to pay my rent. >> the sutter spokesperson says they've reached several tentative agreements with the union and continue to work toward a final deal. >> happening now. it is another night of some dazzling displays. the tail end of the perseid meteor shower is timing up with vivid looks at the northern lights, and many in parts of california have been getting the chance to see both. social media

has been aglow with these kinds of shots from sonoma and ukiah, and over to lake tahoe. abc7 news reporter j.r stone has been scanning the timeline and get some expert insight on these epic displays. >> you're looking at the northern lights or what is called the aurora borealis above yosemite's half dome. these stunning images were taken sunday night, but you didn't have to go to yosemite to see this. the northern lights were also seen here above lake sonoma in yountville and in mendocino county. my mom was actually the one that was really watching it. >> is it going to be clouds? is it going to be smoke? is there this is there that she was really like really zoning in on it for me. >> and that's kim van hoy. she took these images on her cell phone from a hill in ukiah. she says that while the colors showed up on the phone, she could see with her eyes that there were things moving in the sky. >> definitely something was happening. like i said, a lot of light. you can really tell a difference when you look at the horizon. >> so the sun goes through an 11

year cycle of peaks and troughs and right now we're at a sort of a high point of its of its activity. >> ryan wyatt of the california academy of sciences says predicting these northern lights events are challenging. >> the auroral activity is always tricky to predict because we're basically watching for solar storms that are coming right at us. >> those at chabot space and science center say the geomagnetic storm is subsiding for the moment, but there is a possibility that it strengthens again in the next 24 hours. photographer marion williams, who took this pic on his cell phone and this one on his professional camera, was alone most of sunday night near cave rock on lake tahoe. others who showed up thought they missed it and left. >> one couple did come up and they stayed for about 45 minutes and then they left and once they left, i looked to my left and i saw the aurora spiking up. and i want to i almost call him back. i said, come back. and i was like, no, i'm kind of be kind of

nice rolly ones. we get that i had to hold on to the door jamb and i could feel someone else holding on to me. >> our crews discovered that a sprinkler head at the very top of the rotunda. actually, the piping broke, causing a water flow. >> the pasadena city hall was gushing water from above because of that, officials also had to evacuate a middle school on the first day of school for many. but tonight, no reports, thankfully, of any serious injuries or damage. >> there's a back to school mess in the north bay, and apparently wild pigs are to blame. caution tape now ropes off what's left of the grass at geyserville. new tech academy. looks like a bulldozer came through there, but the press democrat reports it's all the work of some very persistent wild pigs. they started with the baseball fields when school officials put up fences. well, they went to town on the rest of the campus. the paper says the school has hired a trapper. school starts on thursday. >> they could do so much damage. so fast. >> all right. caltrain started rolling out its new electric fleet of railcars this weekend.

but that means an end of an era for some gas powered trains. if you're a train enthusiast, you may have the chance to take home a piece of history. caltrans is selling a diesel locomotive with 40 years of service and a million miles traveled. it won't come with a functional engine, so you'll have to use your imagination to transform it to your own use. maybe it will come become something train themed, like a coffee shop or a funky airbnb attraction. i've seen them use train cars for restaurants before. >> yeah, that'd be cool. all right, let's get to our weather. find out if a warm up is coming. >> yeah. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. hi, sandy. hi, there. >> yeah, dan and ama. we do have temperatures that will be climbing up a little bit each. and every day through the middle of the workweek. i want to show you live pictures right now from our tower cameras. visibility is good. fog and clouds are not really an issue tonight. high temperatures were in the low 60s to the upper 80s. they will slowly come up over the next couple of days. let's talk about your forecast for tomorrow. san

francisco 68. bright and breezy, mainly sunny and mild in oakland, mid 70s and it's going to be a bit warmer for san jose and walnut creek in the low to mid 80s. don't get too used to the idea of warmer, because when you look at what the climate prediction center is saying, this just came out 8 to 14 day outlook for august 20th through the 26th. so it's pretty much taking you through the end of the month below average across the midwest, above average across much of the southern tier states heading up towards the central portion of the country. and for us here in the bay area, we are expecting a 33 to 40% chance of below average temperatures. so like today, we're some areas where below average. because of this, we're going to see another trough developing over the weekend and dropping those numbers again. but in the meantime, we do have the breeze to talk about. 34 mile an hour gusts right now are sustained wind. excuse me, in san francisco, gusts to 23 in concord. hourly forecast will show you the winds letting up tomorrow morning and then coming right back up tomorrow

passed away at the age of 76. gone, but certainly not forgotten. kenny wardell was an integral part of the bay area music scene for decades, and local radio bam magazine, the bammies music awards, and the bam music foundation, which he asked me to join as president a few years ago. he was also the inspiration for a new documentary called something in the air a rock radio revolution, which looks at the huge impact of ksan and those early days. kenny was one of the producers of the film, and i spoke today with one of the other producers, jim draper. well, jim, we reconnect under sad circumstances, the passing of kenny wardell. what are your thoughts as you think about his role in bay area music? >> kenny is always been passionate about kazan and the history and how important that
