a breeze this afternoon. this morning we'll take you outside the exploratorium camera. a little foggy out there. some mist some drizzle. but just like yesterday, the cloud cover is mainly along the coast. half moon bay reporting cloudy skies right now in san francisco and in oakland. we have a mix of stars and clouds out there, but for a lot of us like concord, san jose and napa, we currently have clear skies out there. so our marine layer is not too expansive this morning, but along the coast you will find some drizzle and some clouds. temperatures. right now we're mainly in the 50s and low 60s. good morning cupertino 60 degrees. the same in hayward and oakland. 55 that current temperature in the city. the wider view shows you some mild air inland brentwood. right now it's at 71 degrees in the north bay. we're in the mid 50s to the low 60s currently. so looking inland today. very similar forecast compared to yesterday. lots of sunshine out there. it is warm upper 80s lower 90s. a light breeze later on this afternoon around the bay shoreline. we will find limited fog this morning. a lot of sunshine today. even early in the morning. we'll find bright skies 75 degrees mid seconds for

a lot of us around the bay shoreline. then along the coast we have that fog right now. more sunshine than yesterday. temperatures in the low and mid 60s. let's get a check of traffic with amanda. good morning. >> good morning drew. it's prety clear across the bay area when it comes to the commute. this is except the typical slowdown along the altamont pass. there is a high wind advisory issued, so that's going to make conditions just a little tougher. and then i want to take you to castro valley. there is a minor to big rig crash blocking the right lane. there speeds down to about 50mph. so not too bad. just slowing you down a bi. then to the san mateo bridge there is a report of a two car crash eastbound direction before the toll plaza. it is blocking the left lane. there eastbound traffic is busier this morning due to that major issue. back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. happening today, a san francisco superior court will be tossing nearly 70 cases because of a backlog. and some of those cases include criminal charges. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live with how the

district attorney is responding to this, gloria. reporter. >> good morning. yes, the san francisco standard is reporting that dozens of charges will be dropped this morning by san francisco court. this is for crimes like dui, deadly driving, also sexual battery. and this is because of a july ruling that courts could no longer use backlogs during the pandemic to delay trials past their legal deadlines. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins sent us a statement saying the courts decisions to continue cases, past statutory deadlines for trial deprived defendants of their rights, and also robbed victims of theirs, end quote, because the court previously continued cases without proper findings of good cause and the court subsequent abuse of discretion, the court is now required to dismiss those cases. regrettably, the system has now failed. countless victims of crime who will not see justice done, and the standard is reporting that some 70 cases are up for dismissal. jenkins says

for cases will still be prosecuted. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thank you, gloria. >> the u.s. postal inspector tells abc seven thieves are targeting mail carriers who service smaller suburban bay area towns and cities. the latest attack happened just yesterday a daytime robbery of a mail carrier in danville. sky seven was over the scene off of camino tassajara. the attacks have become such an issue. the usps recently increased rewards to $150,000 for help and arrests. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is in the east bay with that. >> deputies scouring an area of unincorporated danville near black hawk, where authorities say a mail carrier was robbed on wednesday. this is video from sky seven showing that carrier, who is physically okay. shortly after the thief took his keys on portola drive, he came up as if they were a customer and then demanded the carriers keys, snatched the keys, gestured that

he had a weapon. >> scared the carrier off and then fled on foot through a foot path there in the danville area. >> matt norfleet is a u.s. postal inspector. the law enforcement arm of the u.s. postal service. he says that robberies are no longer just affecting letter carriers in big cities like san francisco, oakland and san jose. >> we're definitely seeing these robberies happening in the in the bay area suburbs, in outlying areas away from those population centers. we believe there is a underground market to buy and sell these keys. >> those keys are eventually used to open large mail boxes, like the one you see in this video from south san jose earlier this year. norfleet says many of these thieves aren't after packages, rather mail that may contain checks or credit cards. the reward for the arrest and conviction of these robbers is now up to $150,000. >> it's absolutely a lot of money. we consider it a

reflection on how seriously we take the problem. it's outrageous and unacceptable for working people, for letter carriers to be facing threats. >> i was approached by a man brandishing a shotgun earlier this year. >> we spoke with mail carrier bill murphy. he's now been robbed twice on his east bay route. >> i was shocked, i couldn't believe that someone would do such a brazen thing in broad daylight. >> authorities say if you notice a mail carrier being followed, call police. they also recommend going to collect your mail every day in the early evening hours, since many of the actual mail thefts are happening in the overnight hours. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> your voice, your vote. happening today, president biden and vice president harris will hold their first event together since the president dropped out of the 2024 race. they'll be at a community college in maryland talking about the progress they're making to lower costs for americans. a new survey shows californians are excited about a harris presidency. a berkeley igs poll gives harris a

25 point lead. so 59 to 3 donald trump in her home state, compared to president biden, who led trump by only 18 points in the last igs poll that was conducted in february. the poll shows harris receiving higher levels of support than biden almost across the board, but especially amongst voters ages 18 to 29, where she is polling 23 points higher than biden did today. former president donald trump plans to hold a press conference at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey, yesterday. trump cast his ballot in florida for the states early voting kickoff. we're still waiting to hear whether the republican vice presidential candidate, j.d. vance, will agree to a debate. yesterday, democratic vp candidate tim walz says he'll attend the vice presidential debate is scheduled for october 1st. >> santa clara county has reported its first death from west nile virus this year. yesterday, the county announced two people have been infected. both adults were hospitalized.

one is now recovering at home. the other was immunocompromised and died earlier this month. the health department says there was no known connection between these two people, and it's not clear if they were infected within the county. the world health organization has declared the outbreak in africa a global emergency. a man is at the live desk with, what, one bay area infectious disease specialist is saying about these growing concerns and kumasi. >> the declaration comes after a meeting of the un health agency's emergency committee. what has health experts even more worried is the strain is said to be deadlier than other versions of the virus. it is also infected women and children. the outbreak was primarily contained to the democratic republic of congo, but has spread to other countries. we asked ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin-hong how concerned we should be here in the bay area. >> the reason why this is called a public health emergency of international concern, is so that we divert resources to the

countries that need it the most. you know, i think right now it's not a threat, but we are trying to make it continue to not be a threat. that's why we raised the awareness and that's why we're trying to again, nip it in the bud in these countries, in africa. >> the world health organization reports more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths have happened in africa this year, already surpassing last year's numbers. experts say the best form of prevention is to get vaccinated. mpox requires two doses. back to you. reggie >> thank you. abc seven news is following the story of a landslide that wiped out a critical stretch of road in the santa cruz mountains. residents have been walking, climbing, even biking over this landslide for months. now a temporary fix is finally underway. crews are building a single lane along mountain charlie road off of highway 17 and south of los gatos. this comes as neighbors face a new challenge getting back to school. debbie robinson and her daughter haley, have

been using an old golf cart to get them from their house to the landslide and back. haley started her senior year of high school this week. >> it's harder to go hang out with my friends or have them come see me, because it's like my friends used to come and hang out with me at my house. but now i don't really have that opportunity because parents don't want kids walking over this construction for the road is expected to take 4 to 6 weeks. >> time now 509. hello san jose. this morning it is quiet out there. we have clear skies in the south bay. current temperature 60 degrees out there. high humidity, light winds and the winds will turn breezy once again later on this afternoon. so looking at the forecast today, we're a few degrees above average. we're a couple of degrees warmer than we were yesterday over the city. right now we do have fog and drizzle, but we'll quickly have sunshine later on this morning. another windy afternoon just like yesterday. those winds were gusting about 30mph in oakland. it's sunny and mild today with a bit of a breeze. 83 in san jose

and then walnut creek getting warmer than yesterday. above average. lots of sunshine and a high of 90 degrees. it's a little breezy out there right now through the delta. fairfield rio vista gusting anywhere from 23 to 24mph. everywhere else, we have much lighter winds. but just like yesterday, as we head later into the afternoon, those wind speeds are going to pick up. once again that onshore flow coming off of our ocean water, keeping the coast nice and cool. wind speeds similar to yesterda, about 20 to 35mph. strongest gusts along the coast and across the city through the delta. and then we'll repeat that pattern again here on friday with a breezy afternoon. and that is going to keep our temperatures over the next couple of days pretty similar. we'll have temperatures slightly above average for this time of the year. so looking at highs today low and mid 90s inland. so a few degrees above average 76 in oakland 83 san jose near 70. in the city 90. in santa rosa the coast we'll see partly cloudy skies today and half moon bay at 62 degrees reggie aqui thanks to

over its play store. a man at the live desk with the shake up, google could be facing reggie aqui. >> a federal judge in san francisco indicated he will order major changes in google's android app store as punishment for running that monopoly. after a three hour hearing yesterday, the judge said he is considering a mandate requiring google's play store for androids to offer people a choice to download

alternative app stores. last december, a jury found the play store illegally gouged users and stifled innovation. epic games, the makers of the popular video game fortnite, filed the lawsuit. it claimed google's requirement that purchases be made, purchases, i should say, be made through the play store and not third parties created that monopoly. during yesterday's hearing, google said third party app stores can trigger what they've called security chaos. the company estimates it could cost as much as $600 million, depending on what the judge orders. back to you at the desk. >> thank you. amanda. san jose tech giant cisco is cutting 7% of its global workforce about 6000 jobs. this is on top of an earlier round of layoffs this year, when more than 4000 jobs were eliminated. the company specializes in network equipment. excuse me, but it's now looking to shift its focus to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. cisco saw its revenue dropped by 10% but still beat wall street expectations.

the city of san jose is now the first metro region in the country to have a median single family home. price hit $2 million. this is from the national association of realtors. its tracked prices since 1979. san francisco is the second most expensive region on the list, at $1.5 million. california metros represent seven of the top ten. the national median price is $422,000. >> san mateo county and three bay area cities are getting new funds to help create affordable housing. governor newsom is rewarding $130 million in project homekey grants to nine communities to fund new housing projects. the local cities include san francisco, richmond, and sebastopol. newsom says the grants will create 533 permanent supportive homes for an estimated 4800 californians. >> ooh. you know, i love all things ferry building. well, it is getting ready to open a new

>> you hear us? all right. it'll be fun. here's a live look outside from our sfo camera this morning. it is cloudy out there, foggy along the coast, and we have some coastal drizzle here as well. let's talk about the weekend. here's the weekend preview. now saturday is going to be rather cloudy out there. widespread drizzle, not just along the coast, will likely have morning drizzle inland as well. a little bit of sunshine in the afternoon on saturday. sunday is certainly the brighter of the two days and a little bit warmer. you will find cooler weather this weekend below average temperatures, but today we will be warmer than average. looking at our highs today. we're mainly in the 80s and 90s in our warmest spots, but across the board we are a few degrees above average for this time of the year. it's a pleasant afternoon on the way. so looking at today's forecast inland, lots of sunshine, upper 80s, lower 90s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. not a lot of fog this morning, so sunshine appears very quickly for a lot of us. we'll get temperatures in the upper 70s and then along the coast fog right now, but partly cloudy skies this afternoon and temperatures in the low 60s. so highs today in our microclimates

start in the south bay 70s and 80s. there's a lovely afternoon along the coast in the peninsul. 60s, but warmer for redwood city at 7975 for mountain view across the city today, brighter and warmer than yesterday. but it will be windy again. those winds gusting upwards of 30mph this afternoon across san francisco in the north bay, 80s and 90s for the most part, 90. in santa rosa, 84 in napa. the east bay, a little warmer than yesterday. 76 in oakland, 82. castro valley, 77. fremont. and then inland. today, more of us in the 90s for daytime highs. so a bit above average for this time of the year. overnight tonight, we'll find a bit more fog than we're seeing right now. i do expect some of our inland communities to get some of that cloud cover temperatures overnight tonight in the low 50s to the low 60s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you it's sunny but breezy. this afternoon. a similar story tomorrow. then saturday that widespread morning drizzle, it's pretty cloudy. it is certainly cooler. we'll find more sunshine on sunday. a warming trend gets underway here and that warming trend will

right now it's 57 degrees in san rafael with great visibility and high humidity. looking at numbers today, a little bit warmer than yesterday. a little bit above average for this time of the year. near 70. in the city today will go from morning fog to sun, but it will be a windy afternoon. 76 in oakland, warm in san jose at 83. we'll hit about 90 in walnut creek later on this afternoon. looking at current temperatures right now, just some fog along the coast and across parts of the city right now, away from the coast, we do have clear skies. so temperatures right now in the mid 50s to the upper 60s, like brentwood at 69 degrees. so looking at the inland forecast today, very similar to yesterday, a lot of sunshine out there. temperatures above average, upper seconds lower 90s later on today around the bay shoreline. we have very limited fog this morning, which means sunshine appears very fast, faster than yesterday. temperatures will get into the mid 70s, but those winds turn up later on this afternoon, gusting about 20 to 30mph at times. winds will be strongest along

harris first called him to ask if he'd be her running mate. >> the most important call of my life. it popped up and we didn't recognize the caller id and it went to it went to voicemail. >> and when abc news washington. >> tim. yes >> robert f kennedy jr. s campaign team may be looking for an out in the race for the white house. democratic officials tell abc news his team approached vice president harris's team about a seat in her administration in exchange for his support. neither kennedy or harris's team have confirmed that interaction at this point. last month, kennedy met with donald trump to discuss a similar role in exchange for endorsement. no agreement happened there. kennedy's poll numbers have declined since former president biden since. excuse me. president biden dropped out of the race. officials believe his votes are pulling support from the trump campaign. >> a historic settlement in a story we've been following for

months, the city of richmond is dropping its plan to possibly tax chevron in exchange for a financial settlement. under this agreement, chevron will pay out a total of $550 million to the city over ten years. richmond was considering adding a ballot measure in november, which would add $1 per barrel tax on each barrel produced at the refinery. that got dropped after yesterday's agreement. the mayor says it will save the city a potentially costly litigation. >> what's happened here? has demonstrated to the to the nation, to the world that when we as people pull together, we can create change. >> these funds can be used for public safety services, infrastructure, youth services, recreation and toxic land cleanup. chevron's annual revenue last year was a little

more than $200 billion. a new state bill to limit self-checkout machines is advancing in sacramento. the prevention and safe staffing act calls for retailers to ensure safe staffing levels and better supervision of self-checkout machines. the bill sponsor says self-checkout has led to understaffing, increased theft and has also made employees easy targets for crime. >> the data makes it clear that self-checkout machines cost 16 times more loss than check out the cashier. with billions lost in profit, the california retailers association is against the bill, saying the state has no business regulating self-checkout service. >> a new study is raising concerns about the health of american women. it finds the u.s. now has the lowest life expectancy among 14 high income countries. amanda is at the live desk with the details on this. yeah. >> kumasi. the new study found women in the u.s. live, on average, 80 years. that's five years fewer than women in other high income countries.

serve as the home of the los angeles clippers. the arena is located just across the street from sofi stadium and is just blocks away from the legendary forum. businesses getting ready for another boom. >> we've seen from start to finish, from to sofi to intuit dome. it's been incredible. you know, it's been a lot of traffic, you know, a lot of games and you know, customer new customers. >> reporting in inglewood. >> the arena cost around $2 billion to build and was the creation of clippers owner steve ballmer, the former microsoft exec is also picking up the bill. the arena will also display basketball jerseys representing high schools from all across the state. the effort to revitalize struggling downtowns is a big part of building a better bay area. the city of hayward doing its part recently spending millions to buy a movie theater on b street, right in the heart of downtown. some say this is a risky move, but as abc seven news reporter anser hassan explains, others believe it's the anchor.

downtown hayward needs. >> hayward mayor mark salinas doesn't like the empty storefronts in the downtown. >> we have empty buildings that are owned by people who may or may not live in the city and who sit on them and don't lease them. i don't know what they wait for. >> mayor salinas says buildings usually stay vacant for a long time. that's a big loss of tax revenue. they become vulnerable to graffiti and vandalism. residents link it to crime. so in the downtown movie theater came up for sale. they didn't want it to end up the same way. so they bought it. >> i didn't hesitate in the idea in purchasing this property is because the city has a very strong track record of turning out 10 to 15,000 people at all of our street parties in downtown. >> salinas says the theater serves as an anchor for a new economic development plan. he admits movie theaters are struggling post pandemic, but owning it means they can reconfigure it. for example, for

live events, try new business concepts, especially those that target students. >> cal state, east bay and chabot college combined is like 50,000 students, right? and so it's, you know, finding those retailers and finding those economic, generators that will draw people to downtown. >> lucy lopez, president of the chamber of commerce, says the movie theater is also a family friendly venue, which is important for families and family friendly environment. >> it's critical to keep this anchor to help feed a lot of the businesses in the downtown district. >> the owner of buffalo bill's brewery across the street praises the city leadership as courageous for buying the theater. the staff sees it as a game changer. >> gives people a reason to come downtown. it helps the district, grow. >> mayor salinas knows it's a bold move, but he likes his odds. >> i don't know too many cities that have made these economic development investments, but i'm pretty optimistic about this.

the other side of the law. officer timothy hackney of morgan hill is charged with a series of assaults on his now pregnant girlfriend. investigators say he threw her into a bedroom, covered her mouth so she couldn't scream and

prevented her from calling 911. in another incident, he's accused of firing his on duty weapon at the ceiling. hackney was arraigned on felony domestic violence charges. he is on administrative leave from his job. another officer may soon be barred from serving in california law enforcement. anthony perez's police credentials were suspended after he was charged with child sex crimes. perez was just charged this summer with sexual assault of a minor in san benito county authorities say the victim only reported it to police earlier this year, although it happened a decade ago. the alleged assault happened at least three years before perez joined the san jose police academy. >> the city of oakland is apologizing to the widow of a police officer killed in the line of duty, after they asked her for money. the city sent officer tuan lee's widow an invoice in may, asking her to

return $461. it was money that was overpaid, delayed during a ransomware attack last year. oakland's police union claims the city even threatened to take the money from the pension. the widow started receiving after his murder. the 36 year old was shot and killed in december while trying to stop a robbery. >> realistically, the letter that we saw that was sent to he, we were furious with it because how devastating it is for her to go through the experience that she's going through. >> the union offered to pay the $461, but now the city is waiving the debt and apologizing for any distress or inconvenience to the family. >> a teen on a field trip to see a detroit court ended up in handcuffs after an exchange with the judge. the judge reportedly did not like her attitude. abc news reporter danny new has the story. >> it was a field trip that ended in handcuffs. a teenager visiting a detroit courthouse with other students was soon clashing with the judge.
