erielle reshef is live at rockaway beach standing by, but first let's go to ginger with the track and timing. good morning, ginger. >> ginger: good morning to you all. the surf is up already from turks and caicos to bahamas. the rip current risk. you see st. augustine. this is not something you want to get in the next 24-48 hours because they'll just have rip currents that bring you right back out to sea. from jacksonville to savannah we've got rip current alert. here's the storm, 300 miles south/southwest of bermuda moving north/northeast at 14 miles per hour. we put the future cast down and it's tonight where you start to see the impact, early. that's the dirty side where you get the big push of water, coastal flooding, then up to 15 inches of rain. bermuda does very well with hurricanes, but this will be a testing one as it approaches as a cat 2. so again for us it's going to be rough surf especially on the east coast, kind of later in the weekend, saturday night through monday. >> michael: be careful out there at the beach. >> ginger: you got it. >> michael: those rip current

alerts come as so many people head to the beach this weekend. erielle reshef is at rockaway beach in new york with the latest on the conditions. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning, michael. as you can see, the sea is pretty calm this morning but don't let that deceive you. it's going to change pretty dramatically with ernesto churning about 500 miles off shore. the national weather service issuing those alerts that ginger mentioned for high surf and potentially dangerous rip currents as well, waves in some places here in the northeast could reach between nine to ten feet. we know florida will see the choppiest seas start up today. for us here in the northeast, it will be between saturday through monday that are the most dangerous, with tuesday the waters expected to calm down. before you get in, you should check with your local life guards and make sure to heed any warnings in your area. rebecca? >> rebecca: pay attention and just keep that awareness up. okay, erielle. thank you. we turn to the race for the white house. vice president harris is set to lay out her economic plan today

after making her first appearance with president biden since he dropped out of the race. former president trump held another press conference and rachel scott is here with more. good morning, rachel. >> good morning to you. vice president harris has only been in the race for a few weeks. she has not outlined any policy yet but all of that will change today. she's set to unveil her economic agenda as she tries to thread this needle between touting the biden harris record and laying out her own vision for the country. this morning vice president kamala harris set to unveil her economic agenda in north carolina today. after appearing with president biden for the first time since he dropped out of the race. >> few leaders in our nation have done more on so many issues, including to expand access to affordable health care than joe biden. >> reporter: the president touting the first ever negotiations with pharmaceutical companies to lower the cost of ten drugs. >> we will keep standing up for

big pharma. i have fought too damn hard to yield now. we're not backing down. >> reporter: polls showing most americans are still dissatisfied with the economy. her campaign says harris will propose up to $25,000 in down payment support for first time home buyers who have paid their rent on time for two years. expand the child tax credit providing up to $6,000 per child. and implement a first ever federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries, an idea already drawing criticism from donald trump. >> she wants price controls. if they worked, i'd go along with it, too. but they don't work. >> reporter: the former president speaking in new jersey surrounded by groceries for a press conference his advisers said would focus on the economy. >> we're going to have a crash like the 1929 crash if she gets in. >> reporter: minnesota governor tim walz accusing trump of rooting for economic

catastrophe. i put that before the former president. he's saying he believes you want things to get worse so you can campaign on it, that you're rooting for failure. what's the answer? >> i wish i didn't have to do this. if our country were run by democrats and it was run beautifully where we were really being productive and everything else, i would have never done this. >> reporter: trump went from discussing inflation to weighing in on the weight of electric trucks to calling harris a communist. some his own republican supporters have begged him to focus on policy. but trump making it clear he's not going to change. >> i think i'm entitled to personal attacks. i don't have a lot of respect for her. i don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence. and i think she would be a terrible president. and i think it's very important that we win. and whether the personal attacks are good, bad, she certainly attacks me personally. she called me weird. he's weird. >> don't expect those personal attacks to change any time soon. the first vice presidential debate is now set. governor tim walz and j.d. vance have agreed to face off on october 1st. abc news will have the first presidential debate between

donald trump and kamala harris on september 10th. >> rebecca: there will be so much focused on that. there's also focus on the vice presidential candidates. new poll shows how americans are viewing them. >> this race has entirely transformed this summer. new candidate in the race and both campaigns choosing their running mates. so how are they stacking up? our new poll shows governor tim walz is getting more of a positive reception at 39% compared to his republican rival senator vance who was at 32%. not just the reception. more americans approve of walz for the job. both of these candidates are veterans. walz served in the national guard, vance in the marine corps. our poll shows vance's polling slightly higher among veterans. this is notable, given all of the backlash and criticism walz has faced about how he has characterized his military career. linsey? >> linsey: thank you very much. now the hero firefighter killed protecting his family during assassination attempt on donald trump.

this morning we are hearing from his family in an exclusive interview with wtae. aaron katersky joins us with the story. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. this family was reluctant to speak out but we are hearing from them since the volunteer firefighter was killed in the attack on former president trump. this is the family he died protecting. >> he definitely was a hero. he saved his wife. he saved his child. and he was just the best dad. he was just the best. >> reporter: this morning helen compratore and her daughters are speaking out for the first time about the volunteer fire chief who threw himself onto his family during the gun fire at former president trump's rally last month in butler, pennsylvania. >> i'm angry, you know? obviously. my husband took a bullet for

him. but, you know, that, unfortunately, was the plan that day. >> reporter: in an interview airing on our pittsburgh affiliate wtae, daughter allison recalled the moment shots rang out, the memory skill vivid and painful. >> i was the one that my dad threw down. as he was throwing me down, that was when he was shot. he ended up falling onto me. i was confused. i went, dad? when i turned is whenever he fell down. that's when i started screaming, and i was instantly like -- i was trying to keep him from bleeding and somebody had thrown down a towel, so somebody behind us must have seen what was going on. i was just -- i was just holding it there and just screaming for anybody to help. >> reporter: his family wants compratore remembered as more than the person killed in the assassination attempt on the

former president. >> he isn't just the guy that got shot at the rally. he was a husband, a father, a son, an uncle. he was the glue to our family. he was our strength. he was everything to us. and that is what got taken from this world. >> reporter: his two girls remember their dad braiding their hair or teaching them how to do a back hand spring. michael, two others were shot during the rally for former president back on july 13th. james copenhamer and david dutch. both of them are still recovering from their gun shot wounds. michael? >> michael: sorry the family had to go through that. thank you so much. we're going to turn to some breaking news. the convicted killer who escaped prison guards taking him to the hospital captured overnight after two days on the run. faith abubey joins us with details. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning, michael. that escaped murderer was apparently checking in and out

of hotel rooms with a woman as authorities spent days looking for him. this morning escaped murder era ramone alston back in custody after an operation involving the fbi, state and local police. alston ran out of a transport vehicle still wearing his waist chains on his way to a medical appointment. he was captured shortly before 2 a.m. this morning at this hotel in north carolina just outside charlotte. alston checked into the hotel wednesday with a female companion. a hotel employee spotted him wearing a t-shirt and jeans. >> my shift was from 3 to 11. i seen him a few times. just nodded, said hello. they probably came, asked a couple of questions or something, towels or something. i didn't have any red flags or anything like that. >> reporter: alston and the woman checked out the next day. shortly after his arrest, alston's female acquaintance also arrested and now charged with felony aiding and abetting

a fugitive. the escaped killer terrified the commune here for days, as law enforcement scours over 1,300 acres looking for him. he was serving a life sentence for killing a 1-year-old in a random shooting in 2015. and alston is also facing additional charges because of the escape. he's now being transferred to a high security prison to serve out his life sentence. linsey? >> linsey: i'm sure many relieved at his capture. faith, thank you. now the first case of the new, more dangerous strain of mpox formerly known as monkey pox found outside africa. the case has now been confirmed ed in sweden. eva pilgrim is here with those details. >> mpox is now confirmed on at least two continents causing increased concern about possible international spread. officials now reporting a case of mpox in the stockholm area. this after the world health

organization declared the virus as a public health emergency of international concern because of the rapid spread in several african countries. the case in sweden matches the more dangerous strain that has also been found in those countries. the infected person recently visited a region in africa where the virus is spreading. mpox typically spreads with close skin to skin contact. symptoms, a blister like rash, fever, muscle aches and fatigue. who saying the recent outbreak showing signs the virus is spreading among families. so far there hasn't been any cases of this more severe strain here in the u.s. the cdc saying the risk to the general public is low but in a statement to abc news, they are re-evaluating that risk assessment. it is unclear if that will lead to any changes. for now the health agency warning doctors to be on the lookout for patients with symptoms, especially if they travel to those areas seeing these outbreaks recently. if you are concerned that you could be at risk, there is a highly effective vaccine for mpox. talk to your doctor about what

is best for you. michael? >> michael: thank you, eva. now u.s. gymnast jordan chiles breaking her silence after having her bronze medal stripped from her, saying the decision feels unjust. lara, you have this story for us. good morning. >> lara: i do. good morning. the u.s. gymnastic events ended almost two weeks ago and we've been following the controversy surrounding jordan chiles ever since but we haven't heard from chiles herself until now. taking to instagram, she vented her disappointment in what she calls one of the most challenging moments in her career. this morning olympian jordan chiles opening up for the first time about having her bronze medal stripped away. taking to instagram to write, i have no words. this decision feels unjust and comes as a significant blow not just to me, but to everyone who has championed my journey. to add to the heartbreak, the

unprompted racially driven attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. i have poured my heart and soul into this sport and i am so proud to represent my culture and my country. the 23-year-old adding, i have taken pride in cheering on everyone, regardless of team or country. last week chiles' bronze medal was revoked after a court found team usa's appeal to change her degree of difficulty score was filed four seconds too late which meant the bronze medal once again went to romania. chiles, who won gold in the team final, believes she is now confronted with the most challenging moments of her career, saying, i believe at the end of this journey the people in control will do the right thing. >> now usa gymnastics and the usopc have said they will continue to fight for jordan's medal. the next will be the swiss federal tribunal. but finding success at that level is pretty uncommon. >> lara: chiles also adding in

with the former executive director of the san jose police officers association, who is now facing drug charges. joanne segovia was arrested on modified charges yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty. the new filing changed the drug. she is accused of smuggling from fentanyl to tapentadol, which is also an opioid. segovia's attorney hinted she may switch her plea to guilty as a result. it's not clear if a potential sentence will be affected by that change. the next hearing is set for october. now here's amanda with a look at our commute. >> hi kumasi will take you live to the bay bridge toll cam. no delays, no major issues, but metering lights remain on. it does tend to be sluggish across the span into fremont street though. here at this hour and then i'm going to take you to a commuter alert as train three is about 15 minutes late. this is due to train traffic. caltrain and bart doing okay. >> thanks, amanda. meteorologist drew tum

sipping your morning cup. it's coming up. >> michael: now the arrest in the death of matthew perry. five people including two doctors have been charged in the ketamine overdose of the "friends" star. dan abrams is standing by. but first matt gutman is in l.a. with the latest for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it was a stunning development, the investigation alleging doctors, a drug trafficker known as the ketamine queen matthew perry's long time assistant recklessly enabled his addiction and exploited him for money. prosecutors say at one point the doctor told him $12 of ketamine for 2,000. after a months long investigation into the overdose death of matthew perry, this morning five suspects facing federal criminal charges. the investigation revealed in the fall of 2023 mr. perry fell back into addiction. and these defendants took advantage to profit for themselves. >> reporter: the department of justice claiming a broad under

ground criminal network including two doctors and an assistant used matthew perry as a personal piggy bank by securing and selling him the powerful drug ketamine. >> requesting two additional and a supervisor respond. >> reporter: matthew perry was found unconscious, slumped over in his hot tub in his l.a. home. autopsy revealing he died from acute effects of ketamine. >> matthew perry sought treatment for depression and anxiety and went to a local clinic where he became addicted to intravenous ketamine. when clinic doctors refused to increase his dosage he turned to unscrupulous doctors who saw perry as a way to make quick money. >> reporter: over two months say allege the doctor sold him 20 vials of ketamine for $55,000 cash. >> he wrote in a text message, september 2023, quote, i wonder how much this moron will pay.

>> reporter: even as perry's addiction became obvious, dr. plasencia continued to inject him with ketamine and left additional vials. for perry's assistant. >> plascensia saw him seize up and his blood pressure spike. at another point he admitted to another patient that mr. perry was spiralling out of control with his addiction. he knew this was wrong. he knew he was risking mr. perry's life. >> reporter: yet continued to sell it to him. >> and yet they continued to sell it. >> reporter: plasencia pleading not guilty thursday. you say your client exhibited perhaps a lack of judgment, but what the indictment seems to show is that he was really administering ketamine to matthew perry who was a known addict and was clearly in the throws of addiction. >> that's what the government is alleging. whether or not that's what actually happened we'll have to see if it plays out. >> reporter: prosecutors say that after plasencia became too expensive, perry turned to an alleged drug trafficker known by her customers as the ketamine queen. why did matthew perry stop

procuring the ketamine from those two doctors and go to the ketamine queen, as she was known? >> at some point mr. perry decided to go to a different supplier. she was able to procure even larger amounts of ketamine. 50vials over two weeks. >> reporter: she was giving him a better price than the doctors were? >> she got $11,000 in cash as opposed to $55,000. >> reporter: his assistant would receive the drugs. according to his plea agreement, he injected him on the morning of his death. again a second injection around 12:45 p.m. then a third around 40 minutes later which perry allegedly asked him to shoot me up with a big one. ♪ matthew perry shot to fame playing chandler bing on friends. he sat down with diane sawyer in 2022 acknowledging that sobriety for him has been a life long challenge. >> how will we know when you're in trouble? when you're not okay?

it. number two, you have the testimony of the other three people involved here. so only two are effectively going to be on trial. the other three are pleading guilty. they're going to testify against the two. so the prosecutors believe they can show from the doctors to the drug dealers to the person actually implementing it and executing on the shot itself, they've got a very strong case. >> linsey: the two who didn't take the plea deal, what's the potential defense? >> causation will be the biggest one. number one, can you prove that the drugs that they sold were the ones that killed him? they're going to say, you can't prove it. number two, what was the cause of death? there were a number of causes of death. definitely ketamine was one of them. but also the possibility of overdose. of course, the drowning is the other one. i think what you're also going to see is them pointing the finger at the three who already plead, right? you've got the three who plead and you're going to see the two defendants say, wait a second.

one of them is the one who shot it up himself. why are you blaming my person with regard to the cause of death? so the question ultimately will be, is there going to be a plea agreement here? are they going to make a deal to end this case beforehand? >> rebecca: matthew perry clearly a beloved celebrity. but so many families are dealing with this in their own right. are prosecutors trying to send a message here? >> no doubt. i think you've seen a more thorough in depth investigation here because prosecutors do want to send a message. they want to make it clear, if you have a drug addict, you better be careful, because everyone involved if something happens to this person is going to be held accountable. >> michael: when we say sending a message, seems prosecutors are using matthew perry's case to do this. >> they're not just talking about the doctors or assistant but a drug network when it comes to ketamine to remind people, you're gonna get caught. the question's gonna be, are they going to investigate all

>> rebecca: we turn now to the security breach at dulles airport. a man following a family from the tsa check point all the way on to their row of the plane. the only problem, he didn't have a boarding pass for that flight. trevor ault is here with the details. this is just wild to think about. good morning, trevor. >> really creepy story. seems to have been a serious security lapse. a mother noticed this suspicious man following her through the terminal, even into the women's bathroom and on to her plane and even her kids were terrified. this morning a georgia mother demanding answers from delta about an alarming incident on her family's flight earlier this month. the airline now investigating what went wrong. >> my heart started beating immediately. i didn't know what this man's intentions were. >> reporter: laura benton said she, her husband and children were flying home from dulles airport when she noticed a man appeared to be following her family in the terminal.

>> he was standing in the ladies room washing his hands. i was immediately alarmed. >> reporter: she said she tried to keep her distance but when the family boarded the plane that man boarded, too, and sat down right in their row. >> my husband assertively confronts him and says, is this really your seat? the man said, yes, it's my seat. my husband requested to see the man's boarding pass. he was unable to produce it. >> reporter: he was then escorted off the plane. tsa said he had a valid id and boarding pass but for a different flight. he should have never been allowed on that plane. >> delta should have ensured that that boarding pass matched up with the individual which it did but it didn't match up with the flight they were boarding at that time. >> reporter: delta says it's now reviewing the matter in question internally. has been in touch with airport securities in conjunction with this review. and airport officials tell us

force winds are some 70 miles from it. it's still more than 250 miles south/southwest of bermuda, but by tonight you'll start to see those big impacts. tomorrow morning look how close it is to the center as it passs there. it's likely a low end cat 2 or high end cat 1. doesn't matter. it will be about how long the rain bands stick around. they could see 8-15 inches of rain. course, coastal flooding. for us, it's mostly staying far away. but remember, look at the ocean shakers, so it's moving waves. we could see waves up to nine feet. you see where that kind of moves in for the new york city beaches area, the jersey shore, long island. that's mostly saturday night to sunday. then i say the cape sunday and monday are going to be the biggest times to avoid water. obviously, look for those red flags, too. just don't get in there and drive. michael? >> michael: thank you, ginger. major development in the investigation into the killing of johnny whackter, the soap star gunned down in an l.a. street in may. police have now arrested four people in connection with the shooting.

compensation before you go on your first home tour. >> the idea that you would have to sign an agreement before you even look at a house, what is the advantage of that? >> what it will do is it will clearly spell out and articulate the services that the buyer can expect from their real estate professional, from their agent, their broker, their realtor. and then also, we're having the conversation with the consumer up front about how we expect to get paid. >> reporter: this couple recently agreed to sign a contract before touring homes in st. louis. >> it definitely added a little more commitment to the process. >> reporter: they say knowing what they were paying their realtor from the on set helped clarify their costs. they looked at hundreds of listings before closing on their dream home. >> i was kind of hesitant to shop around for real estate agents, but finding the right person can actually find you the right house. >> reporter: the other big

changes for home sellers, who typically pay 5% to 6% commission which their realtor and the buyer's broker split. for a home that sell force $400,000, that can mean $24,000 in commissions alone. but now it could become easier for sellers to negotiate who pays those fees. so that could save sellers money. michael the national association of realtors tells us the most important factor to make housing more affordable is building more inventory. bottom line, still too much competition for too few homes. >> michael: we're getting good news for home buyers when it comes to mortgage rates. >> mortgage rates are hovering at the lowest rate this year. 6.4%. that's down from 7.2% in may. $400,000 home your monthly payment is about $195 cheaper than it would have been just a few months ago. that is bringing some home buyers off the side lines. existing homeowners who run able to lock in lower rates are also taking note. refinancing application surged 35% last week. lot of analysts expect we are going to see rates drop lower
