>> reporter: hey, good morning to you, mary. yes, ernesto making landfall here in this tiny island of bermuda. a rare landfall at that category 1 storm that continues to churn off the coast. while it did weaken, we're still getting its impacts pretty heavily. heavy wind and heavy rain still coming down right now. and it will continue. the big threat flash flooding. large and destructive waves lashing bermuda's coast. marinas deserted. most cruise ships pulled out ahead of the storm and the airport at this hour is closed. even though it's churning hundreds of miles offshore, ernesto is bringing dangerous surf and deadly rip currents to the beaches up and down the east coast of the u.s. back here in bermuda more than 25,000 customers without power this morning. with the storm crawling over the island and hurricane force winds continuing, rescue crews can't put bucket trucks in the air to get the lights back on. will? >> will: all right, morgan. thank you for that. let's check on the impacts it will have on the east coast. somara, you've been watching it closely. what is the latest? >> somara: we're not taking a direct hit but there will be secondary impacts in terms of high risk for rip currents. category 1 hurricane right now.

we have hurricane ernesto moving over bermuda. what will happen next is the storm system continues to push out to sea passing newfoundland monday evening. as a cat one, continuing to decrease in intensity. here along the eastern seaboard we could see waves reach up to eight feet so if you're headed to the beach for summer vacation, be very mindful of that risk. gio? >> gio: got to be careful along the coast. somara, thank you. now to the race for the white house, both vice president harris and former president trump concentrating on pennsylvania this weekend. abc's jay o'brien is in chicago. that's the site of next week's democratic national convention. jay, good morning, again. >> reporter: good morning, gio. we are just days away from the curtain going up at the dnc in chicago. before that, the harris and trump campaigns are barnstorming that must-win battleground state of pennsylvania giving their dueling visions on a top issue for voters, the economy. this morning, both vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump

meantime, donald trump holding his own rally in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania, today after spending the week slamming harris and the biden administration's handling of the economy. >> kamala harris is a radical california liberal who broke the economy. >> reporter: and drawing fire for these comments saying the presidential medal of freedom, the highest civilian honor is, quote, much better than the medal of honor awarded to war heros. >> that's the highest award you can get as a civilian. it's the equivalent of the congressional medal of honor but civilian version. it's actually much better because everyone gets the congressional medal of honor. that's soldiers. they're either in very bad shape because they've been hit so many times by bullets or they're dead. >> reporter: trump's running mate senator j.d. vance defending the former president. >> i don't think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the presidential medal of freedom is in any way denigrating those who received military honors. >> reporter: trump is planning another speech on the economy in pennsylvania on monday. it will be his attempt to

counter program the first night of the dnc in chicago when president biden is expected to take the stage behind me and speak. mary? >> mary: busy week ahead. thank you, jay. president biden says a gaza cease-fire and hostage agreement is closer than ever, but for all the optimism in washington, so far the reaction from israel and hamas has been that this is not a done deal. mediators from the u.s., qatar and egypt are hoping to finalize a deal as early as next week. u.s. secretary of state blinken is due to arrive in israel tomorrow to try to close out that cease-fire agreement. overnight president biden warning all the players in the region not to do anything that could undermine those negotiations at this critical time. >> will: here in the u.s. the cdc is warning of a multistate outbreak of salmonella linked to small turtles. so far 51 people have gotten sick including 23 hospitalizations. these include young children. the illnesses are linked to turtles less than four inches long. a federal law bans the sale and

students towards vocational schools to learn a trade and lionel is here with all the details. lionel, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning. more and more high school grads are opting for vocational school and taking up carpentry and plumbing. this morning, one young woman is inspiring millions on tiktok with her viral videos taking us through her day as an electrician. >> welcome back. another day in the life of a commercial electrician. >> reporter: lexi is not your typical tiktok influencer. >> i'll show you what happens when a breaker doesn't do its job and doesn't trip. >> reporter: instead of makeup tutorials or luxury hauls, she showcases the life of an electrician to her 2.2 million followers. >> i went to college for premed and then covid happened. at this time i was, like, doing electrical work and that's kind of when i took over electrical full time. >> reporter: born into a family of electricians, she began posting videos of her work in 2022.

now she says she gets thousands of messages from viewers saying she made them consider a different career path. >> there are so many people that comment and say that they, like, started trades or started looking into trades because of my videos. >> reporter: her path is part of a larger trend with more young people turning to trades driven by competitive salaries and rising college costs. last year, enrollment in trade-focused community colleges rose 16% and the number of students studying construction trades rose 23%. this, as the number of students completing undergraduate degrees dropped. as for her, she's happy her career path is paving the way for the next generation. >> you don't just have one route which is college. you could go to a trade school. you could go to a tech school. you could join a union. you can join an apprenticeship as opposed to going to college and spending all this money when you're first getting out of an apprenticeship and stuff, you have no debt. you're just stacking money at

show with their "once upon a mattress" playbills and pedi cabs were going by and i yelled quiet. so that's the highest praise. you're welcome, mom. >> mary: another world that everyone knows you from so well is "snl." you were part of such an amazing cast. i'm curious, do you guys stay in touch? do you guys -- that must have been such an amazing bond. >> it's definitely, you know, for lack of a better term the mafia. you can't really get out of it and you can't leave the family. [ laughter ] even if you wanted to and we've stayed very close. i mean, there's such a shorthand among anyone who worked on "snl" and i'm close to the women in my era, and in general, there's a bond. if you see somebody from "saturday night live" on the street even if they're from a different cast, generation, there's an immediate -- because it's such a weird kind of mutant skill set. i mean, you guys work in news. i'm sure it feels the same way. it's fast. it's furious. it's unprepared. you have to kind of fly by the seat of your pants.
