years since safety nets were installed at the golden gate bridge. they're meant to prevent suicide and save lives. but are they working? and east bay teachers demand transparency? what's being done after lead was detected in several schools? drinking water. >> plus, it's the last battle of the bay ever. so i figured i'd cash out and get the best seats. you know, i'll never be to the coliseum again. i love oakland, i wish they weren't leaving. >> you heard it there. the last battle of the bay. ever. fans embracing the weekend as the giants play the oakland a's for the last time. what a weekend. and good morning to you. it's sunday august 18th i'm zach fuentes. we're going to kick things off with weather and meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning. it was an interesting day yesterday. if you were up in the north bay, we received 16/100 of an inch of rain on top of mount tam and a couple hundredths on the peaks of the east bay, all due to this system there in the pacific northwest that is bringing a lot of rain. but for the bay area, we will be back to our regular pattern where we get those breezy afternoon winds and

temperatures climbing. 63 in fremont. it is 65 in san jose. so the clouds haven't filled in everywhere yet. it's in the low to mid 50s in the north bay, where we have partly cloudy skies. by about 9:00. we are mostly cloudy in the 60s inland, but you can see by about 10 or 11:00. it gets sunny and by 1:00 in the afternoon approaching 80 inland. full sunshine for everyone except right at the coast. san francisco will be partly cloudy. low 80s today. inland. low 70s around the bay shore and mid 60s downtown. zach. >> lisa. thank you. it's been eight months since suicide deterrent nets were installed below the golden gate bridge. and now bridge. authorities say the nets are working and saving lives. according to our partners at the san francisco standard, four people have died by jumping off the bridge this year. that's about 20% of the annual average for this date. the $200 million barrier sits 20ft below the bridge and extends 20ft out. it stretches across the entire bridge. oakland teachers and

parents want more answers surrounding the lead recently found in multiple schools. drinking water. district leaders say the lead concerns come from a bigger problem that old schools cannot afford to replace. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at what's being done to keep everyone safe. >> i absolutely want more transparency. we demand more transparency. >> stuart lobel is a sixth grade teacher at frick united academy of language in east oakland. most of that public school's drinking fountains are now off limits, with signs saying do not drink the water. parents and staff at frick got this letter from the school district last week saying water testing found five fixtures at your school with lead levels above five parts per billion, three times higher than the epa's recommended threshold. abc seven news obtained the water testing report dated april 2024. lobel is asking what took so long to inform parents and staff of the findings. >> students have been going to that school and summer school included for this whole time, drinking that water, which is

completely unacceptable and infuriating. district officials say frick is one of 22 usc campuses where elevated lead levels have been found. >> parents and teachers vented their frustrations at last week's school board meeting. >> we are demanding safe drinking water for our students immediately. transparency about what's happening. >> this is a real crisis and we're taking it very seriously. >> oakland school board president sam davis says communication with schools needs to be better. he says the district has been aggressive in testing water since 2017, and is now taking steps to fix the problem. >> so we need to make sure that there's testing available for families to find out if they were exposed to lead, and we need to invest in remediating the issue. >> the district says new water filters and pipes will be installed at campuses and will be tested again to comply with safety standards. do you believe these schools are safe for teachers and for kids? >> we need to make them safe. >> our buildings are old. we know we need to test on a

regular basis and do the abatement. the route is we need brand new buildings. that is the solution. we obviously can't do that. >> stuart lobel wants a campus with safe drinking water in the meantime, he hopes the community can help keep students hydrated. >> so i would call on partners from the community to help us provide bottled water to school sites in oakland. in oakland. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> now to a deadly mass shooting in the city of oakland. two people died after a total of four people were shot following an argument. police say it happened yesterday morning on 83rd avenue, about a block away from international boulevard. investigators believe a group of people were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun and opened fire. the shooter took off in a car. police found two people dead. the other two were taken to the hospital in critical condition. there are no details on a suspect right now. and developing news. vallejo police are searching for the person responsible for shooting at officers this weekend. police

say someone shot at two police officers while they were on patrol near the vallejo municipal marina saturday. it happened around 1 a.m. between harbor way and mare island way. the officer's patrol car was struck by at least one bullet. none of the officers involved were injured. and we're following the story of multiple scandals in the antioch police department, fueling a staffing crisis. the interim police chief said it could take a year to get staffing back to full capacity. right now, multiple officers are on leave and dozens of positions are open. antioch police are facing multiple investigations by the state and federal government, plus several civil lawsuits over alleged misconduct, including a racist text message scandal. the antioch city council recently agreed to hire a new police captain to help manage the department. apd has two captains right now, but one of them is on leave and expected to retire. >> the absence of a permanent captain has had some significant impacts on our operations, creating challenges that we are doing our best to manage and

allowing us to hire this position. i think, is going to fill a critical need to provide stability and management. >> the interim police chief says the department has to hire over 35 police officers to get back to full staffing in the south bay. one person is dead following a fire at a mobile home in mountain view. firefighters say it started yesterday morning on moffett boulevard near middlefield road. they found the resident inside. one firefighter dislocated a shoulder when the floor of the home collapsed. fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes. the cause is under investigation and firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire that led to a massive plume of smoke over san jose. the fire was on stone avenue, just off highway 87, in south san jose yesterday. it happened at a scrap metal yard. firefighters tell us no one was hurt and no buildings were burned. and in the north bay video shows the moments firefighters kept flames from reaching homes in san anselmo. we first told you about this story on abc seven

mornings. it started in a commercial building on red hill avenue, triggering evacuations as flames spread to the back of the property. crews did get the fire under control before it reached the homes nearby. ross valley fire tells us the neighbors defensible space made the difference. no word yet on how the fire started. happening today, there's a fundraiser for a popular oakland bookstore that was damaged in a fire. a gofundme has raised well over $200,000 for east bay booksellers on college avenue. gilman brewing in berkeley is hosting today's event, which will feature local authors. the bookstore owner plans on using the money to pay employees and find a temporary location to reopen. today is the final battle of the bay series between the giants and the a's. the a's are set to move to sacramento next season. abc seven news reporter anser hassan went to the coliseum and talked to fans about the importance of this matchup. reporter when a's pitcher michael ohtani struck out the giants casey schmidt, it

to the right you can see the sea lions are just starting to wake up, as are the rest of us. this morning. even me, right here on the news desk. all right, well, hundreds of immigrants and their supporters are marching with a message in the bay area. members of the northern california coalition for immigration reform are walking a 48 mile trek from san jose to san francisco. marchers say they want to be seen, recognized and legalized. they're calling on the presidential candidates to consider changes to immigration law that would include the right to apply for permanent residency after seven years. the walk ends at san francisco city hall tomorrow in the east bay.

claremont middle school in oakland is celebrating a new addition to campus. nearly a decade in the making, a grand opening was held for a new multi-purpose room. it's a long awaited opening to a fire on campus, severely damaged the old building, which housed the school cafeteria. that was nine years ago, and it's been a long time coming. >> the facility burned down in 2015, and it was just a small cafeteria at the time. and so we're really glad to see this reopen as a multi-purpose room with a gym with a sound system, with a brand new kitchen. just a lot of features that are it's just such a beautiful building. >> the new multipurpose room at claremont is the first major project to be completed with funds from measure y that was approved by oakland voters in 2020. well today is the last day to see comic book sci fi and fantasy characters on full display in san jose. galaxy con wraps up later today. it's bringing large crowds to the convention center and around the city. the popular fandom

convention is being held here in the bay area city for the first time. it's a chance for fans to meet their favorite characters and pick up some intergalactic merch. doors open at 10 a.m. today, and william shatner is set to make his appearance later on. it was a lively night on the streets in san francisco's richmond district. two hundreds turned out for the neighborhood's latest heart of the richmond district night market. the family friendly event offers food, live music, shopping, and more. organizers and city leaders are counting on the night markets to help local businesses and boost community morale. >> it's been really successful and we've had like big crowds come here enjoying local vendors that are from the richmond district and we have local businesses such as sikh noodles, uh- and many other businesses from clement street that are actually selling food here. >> last night was the third of four night markets in the richmond district. the final market of the summer will take place on september 21st. tens of thousands of music lovers descended upon golden gate park this weekend, one week after

outside lands this year. organizers are kicking off a new concert series in the park. as abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports, the hope is that there's more to come. >> reporter it's a double take at golden gate park. just one week after outside lands. music fans are flooding in. can't go wrong with anything. >> golden gate park and system of a down. >> you can't go wrong. system of a down. and deftones headlining the inaugural golden gate park concerts. >> this is a pretty epic show. i'm a huge deftones fan. i've been a deftones fan and a system of a down fan for, well, since the early 90s. >> the one day sold out event, drawing in 50,000 fans from across the bay area and beyond. event organizers saying 90% of the audience is from outside san francisco. >> that means hotel rooms, restaurants, ubers, retail taxes all of that. >> san francisco recreation and parks says the concert simply makes sense. on the heels of a

multi-day, multi-stage festival. >> why not? while we're taking down most of the infrastructure, leave enough for a single stage concert, these are wonderful. >> i'm so happy this experience that we had, the outside lands and this one amazing. >> and for these vendors, the move means more business. we see a lot of people that aren't able to come into the restaurant, to our brick and mortar. >> and they come here and they know us by our name. so it's been really cool. >> it's an extension of what we did on outside lands. it's also a different crowd. we're excited that it's in the main polo fields. and we've been we've been here for several years, and we're just really blessed and excited to be on the first time. >> and they're hoping to serve up even more next year. >> i think if we do it right and the crowd speaks for itself and we enjoy it, i think the city is ready to get a 2 or 3 day in this mix, you know, for next the second weekend. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> all right. now take a look at this. it's the t-rex derby at emerald downs in washington state. saturday's race had hundreds of dinosaurs taking

part. there were four races a kids race, men's and women's, and a dinosaur category for those advanced runners. >> oh. oh. dynamo, go to your room. clean up your room. don't stay out late, little dino. dino kaiser got there first. it was dino kaiser. >> dino kaiser got to love the names. the event was started in 2017 as a local company's team building activity. and just look what it's grown into. an exciting annual tradition there. props to them for being able to run in those costumes. all right. we got a lot happening here in the bay area too. so let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen, who is of course tracking our forecast. >> that's right. almost a full moon out there. and we had some pretty wacky weather yesterday. in fact, it kind of went over a mist and drizzle was actually measurable rain in parts of the bay. even san francisco saw the dark skies and a few raindrops. but as for today, we're getting back on track, and the system that has brought the inclement

weather of yesterday is still bringing the rain into the pacific northwest. but we've got a ridge building in and that's going to allow for temperatures to come up today in the skies to brighten up. right now it is 62 in fremont. temperatures are still kind of mild to muggy out there. 65 in oakland we have partly cloudy skies in the north bay, 56 up in napa with 53 in santa rosa. look outside. that's emeryville, of course. so there is some dense coastal fog right at the shoreline. this morning. and that will allow for maybe some reduced visibility and certainly taking your time out there throughout the day today, bright skies, breezy winds, we'll be back to that sea breeze. so even though the temperatures have been a little bit cooler, helping with the firefighting efforts, we always get back into that afternoon sea breeze that really just works to dry out the atmosphere into early next week. we'll still have those warmer temperatures monday into tuesday. so today sets off that slight, brief warm up. there's a look at the low

cloud deck, which eventually makes its way a little bit further to the east. this morning. then it does retreat, bringing mostly cloudy. mostly sunny conditions, but cloudy skies at the coast. here. san francisco in and out of the sun. there western side, cloudy eastern side. we'll see some sunshine. and then to early sunday you'll notice we're back into the gray sky, but it quickly burns back for a sunny mid-morning and we're looking at those 90s returning inland. so with the ebb and flow of the fog, we of course have the sea breeze and those winds kicking up to over 20 miles an hour today, more like 25 miles an hour. so those breezy winds pretty typical. and looking at temperatures when they increase in our inland valleys, it will be subtle throughout the day today. so this is a look at, say, pleasanton and danville from the low 60s. in the next hour or so through the upper 60s. 10:00. and then we should see numbers kind of level out in the mid 80s today, dropping off into the mid 70s by 8:00. so a pretty nice evening in our

inland valleys and the rest of the bay enjoying some mid 70s from san mateo to palo alto. 79 today in san jose. good recovery, some cloud cover for you yesterday back into the low 80s today in santa rosa with more sunshine and the accuweather seven day forecast. we've got the clouds at the coast today and even some mist and drizzle will linger there. but elsewhere mid 70s bayside, mid 80s inland. and then we're warmer for your monday, the warmest day of the week looks to be tuesday. we'll turn cooler by wednesday, but it's thursday and friday. we're watching a system that will bring not only the cooler numbers, but perhaps the possibility of a little bit more rain coming. our way. too early to tell, but we're getting these systems that are awfully strong for this time of year to the north of us, a little unusual. we still have a lot of summer left. right. september october for us here, but we'll watch that for you. >> we will stay on our toes. lisa. thank you. all right. on the peninsula, whales have been making their presence known along the coast of pacifica recently. these photos and videos were recorded by viewer

right now at 5.30, a ride on a ferris wheel turns into a nightmare. cable cars catching fire at a music festival in germany. >> plus, we're a day away from the democratic national convention kicking off. i'm jacqueline lee in chicago. we'll have more coming up. >> good morning to you. thanks for being with us this half hour. we're going to get things kicked off with a look at the weather with lisa argen. >> it's a little crazy. yesterday we had the clouds, a little bit of precip and temperatures were sort of muggy from that system to the north of us. so they were on the mild side, but boy, it felt humid right now. we're still in the 60s, so we haven't cooled off that much in the south bay. and temperatures are cooler in the north bay with partly cloudy conditions. look at that. 50 in calistoga, 55 in sonoma, 59 in mill valley and fog from napa, three mile visibility. santa

president joe biden left the ticket and vice president kamala harris taking his place. abc news reporter jacqueline lee is in chicago. >> for the next four days, chicago will be decked out in blue democrats united ahead of the november presidential election, determined to have nominee kamala harris win the presidency. the convention, no doubt historic after top democrats forced president joe biden to drop his bid for reelection, he couldn't shake a flood of concerns about his mental fitness. after an embarrassing june debate against former president trump. >> if the covid excuse me with dealing with everything we have to do with fivethirtyeight's polling averages show harris having an average support of 45% of voters, while trump garners 43.5%. >> harris polling much better than a trump biden matchup. top democrats and celebrities set to make appearances, including president joe biden, former president barack obama, singer john legend, actress octavia spencer and talk show host jon stewart. security measures and fencing erected outside the

blinken's ninth trip to the region since the war began on october seventh. he is set to meet with israeli officials today. prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office says he also met with negotiators recently. they say they're optimistic about reaching a ceasefire deal. former new york congressman george santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple counts in his federal fraud case. santos is scheduled to appear at a court hearing tomorrow on long island. the news comes weeks before jury selection for the case is set to begin. santos has previously pleaded not guilty to a range of financial crimes. that includes lying to congress about his wealth, collecting unemployment benefits while working and using campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses. at least 23 people are hurt after a ferris wheel caught on fire in germany. it happened during the high field music festival last night. flames started on one gondola then spread to a second one. no one was on the two gondolas when the flames erupted. the conditions of the people injured is not known. police are still

trying to find out what caused the fire. when it comes to mental health, the number to know is 988. but many don't know that. and officials in one bay area county want that to change. now there's a new campaign to help those in crisis. >> santa clara county crisis and suicide prevention hotline since 2022, 988 has been the suicide and crisis lifeline, simplified from what many call the difficult to remember one 800 number. >> people are encouraged to call if they're experiencing thoughts of suicide, mental health related distress, worried about a loved one, or need emotional support. on the other end of the line are staff and volunteers trained to help their mental health community workers, so they have a background in behavioral health services. >> many of the volunteers have family members or themselves that have been involved with with mental health issues. so they come with a sensitivity. >> in its first year, the santa clara county crisis line answered nearly 21,000 calls. 5% of them resulted in a field visit by one of its three mobile

crisis units. >> despite these numbers, i am still finding that too many people don't know about 988. >> so they've announced a new campaign to spread the word and also share what's new since it first launched. >> text and chat is now available alter and we have stae been trained in how to work within text and chat and it's beginning to pick up. so it is for spanish and english. >> the call option is still in place for more than 200 languages. and while santa clara county officials say it's 988, crisis line isn't getting as many calls as it can across the country. other centers have seen an influx. the substance abuse and mental health services administration said 40% more people have been helped since before the 988 hotlines. national launch, but abc news has reported that many centers have struggled to hire and retain staff to keep up. in santa clara county, officials said its team is ready to take on any more calls. this new campaign brings in 65 volunteers who work various shifts, so we have some capacity to ramp up

california's largest ever affordable housing bond was taken off the november ballot would have provided $20 billion in funding to address the bay area's lack of affordable housing options. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey tells us what comes next. >> this is one of the most difficult votes that i will be taking. >> not often does a unanimous decision have such hesitation, but that was the case when the bay area housing finance authority voted to pull an affordable housing bond from the november ballot, meaning $20 billion for housing projects is now off the table. santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez was among the reluctant yes votes. >> we know that we need the best shot at communicating with the voters in a way that helps people understand how important this opportunity is to getting housing built in our community, and that the timing was off. >> the bond would have raised funds through a surcharge on property tax bills and distributed those significant dollars to bay area counties based on their contributions, including big dollars to big

cities, with 2 billion coming to san jose alone in the north bay, 2 billion would have been spread out among the four counties, and the other five counties would have gotten around 2 billion each, including 2.5 billion for santa clara county money supervisor chavez says. could have gone a long way. we have 12,000 homes somewhere in the pipeline that are affordable, that just need a little bit more money to get over the finish line and get built, 12,000. >> so for us, this is a significant loss when the need for housing is top of mind as the state continues to clean up encampments and move homeless off the streets. >> why this vote? the commissioners say there is not enough support for the measure at this time. only 55% approval in recent polls. disappointing but there's hope for a future ballot i would call for and ask that we all take that energy of disappointment to ensure that prop five passes, to ensure that that very first step takes place so that we can move forward with this when it comes through again. prop five would lower voter approval thresholds from
