being done after lead was detected in several schools? drinking water. >> plus, it's the last battle of the bay ever. so i figured i'd cash out and get the best seats. you know, i'll never be to the coliseum again. i love oakland. i wish they weren't leaving. >> you heard it there. the last battle of the bay. ever. fans embracing the weekend as the giants play the oakland a's for the last time at the coliseum. can't believe that's already here. good sunday morning to you. it's august 18th. i'm zach fuentes. we're going to start with a quick look at weather and meteorologist lisa argen. okay. >> yeah a better day today. if you're looking for sunshine some warmth. but boy yesterday was interesting wasn't it? with this trough here allowing for a few showers and that higher humidity. so this system we're between the system to the north and west of us and high pressure building in to the south. so looking across the bay okay. pretty clouds there. sunshine winning out with upper 50s downtown and upper 60s around the bay shore. and we do have some fog in the north bay. look at the roof camera. the breeze

already kicking up with 69 in fairfield, 67 in concord and our 24 hour temperature change. it is cooler with anywhere from 2 to 9 degrees of cooling. this morning, mainly in the north bay, so visibility reduced at the coast up in santa rosa, but the fog is clearing and so by the next couple of hours we have full sunshine and time for the temperatures to really respond into the upper 70s to the low 80s inland, with low 70s around the bay. zach. >> lisa. thank you. it's been eight months since suicide deterrent nets were installed below the golden gate bridge. now, bridge authorities say the nets are working and saving lives. according to our partners at the san francisco standard, four people have died by jumping off the bridge this year. that's about 20% of the annual average for this date. the $200 million barrier sits 20ft below the bridge and extends 20ft out, stretches across the entire bridge. oakland teachers and parents want more answers surrounding the lead recently found in multiple schools drinking water. district leaders

say the lead concerns come from a bigger problem that old schools just can't afford to replace. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at what's being done to keep everyone safe. >> i absolutely want more transparency. we demand more transparency. >> stuart lobel is a sixth grade teacher at frick united academy of language in east oakland. most of that public school's drinking fountains are now off limits, with signs saying do not drink the water. parents and staff at frick got this letter from the school district last week saying water testing found five fixtures at your school with lead levels above five parts per billion, three times higher than the epa's recommended threshold. abc seven news obtained the water testing report dated april 2024. lobel is asking what took so long to inform parents and staff of the findings. >> students have been going to that school and summer school included for this whole time, drinking that water, which is completely unacceptable. and infuriating. district officials say frick is one of 22 usc

campuses where elevated lead levels have been found. >> parents and teachers vented their frustrations at last week's school board meeting. >> we are demanding safe drinking water for our students immediately. transparency about what's happening. >> this is a real crisis and we're taking it very seriously. >> oakland school board president sam davis says communication with schools needs to be better. he says the district has been aggressive in testing water since 2017, and is now taking steps to fix the problem. >> so we need to make sure that there's testing available for families to find out if they were exposed to lead, and we need to invest in remediating the issue. >> the district says new water filters and pipes will be installed at campuses and will be tested again to comply with safety standards. do you believe these schools are safe for teachers and for kids? >> we need to make them safe. >> our buildings are old. we know we need to test on a regular basis and do the abatement. the route is we need brand new buildings. that is the solution. we obviously can't do

that. >> stuart lobel wants a campus with safe drinking water. in the meantime, he hopes the community can help keep students hydrated. >> so i would call on partners from the community to help us provide bottled water to school sites in oakland. >> in oakland, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> now to a deadly shooting. mass shooting in the city of oakland. two people died after a total of four people were shot following an argument. police say it happened yesterday morning on 83rd avenue, about a block away from international boulevard. investigators believe a group of people were arguing when one of them pulled out a gun and opened fire. the shooter took off in a car. police found two people dead. the other two were taken to the hospital in critical condition. there's no details on a suspect right now. developing news. vallejo police are searching for the person responsible for shooting at officers this weekend. police say someone shot at two police officers while they were on patrol near the vallejo municipal marina saturday. it

happened around 1 a.m. between harbor way and mare island way. the officers patrol car was struck by at least one bullet. none of the officers involved were injured. and we're following the story of multiple scandals in the antioch police department, fueling a staffing crisis. the interim police chief says it could take a year to get staffing back to full capacity. right now, multiple officers are on leave and dozens of positions are open. antioch police are facing multiple investigations by the state and federal government, plus several civil lawsuits over alleged misconduct, including a racist text message scandal. the antioch city council recently agreed to hire a new police captain to help manage the department. apd has two captains right now, but one of them is on leave and expected to retire. >> the absence of a permanent captain has had some significant impacts on our operations, creating challenges that we are doing our best to manage and allowing us to hire. this position, i think, is going to fill a critical need to provide stability and management.

>> the interim police chief says the department has to hire over 35 police officers to get back to full staffing. developing news residents were forced out of their homes overnight when a three alarm fire erupted at an apartment complex in pittsburgh. you can see the flames here in this video. it's what it looked like when firefighters were working to knock down the fire. fire officials say it started around 3 a.m. at the woodland hills apartment homes on west buchanan road. four apartments were completely destroyed. firefighters are still on scene right now mopping up. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. in the south bay, one person is dead following a fire at a mobile home in mountain view. firefighters say it started yesterday morning on moffett boulevard near middlefield road. they found that resident inside. one firefighter dislocated a shoulder when the floor of the home collapsed. fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to other homes. the cause is under investigation and firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire.

that led to a massive plume of smoke over san jose. the fire was on stone avenue, just off of highway 87, in south san jose yesterday. it happened at a scrap metal yard. firefighters tell us no one was hurt and no buildings were burned. and in the north bay, video shows the moments firefighters kept flames from reaching homes in san anselmo. it's a story we first told you about on abc seven mornings. it started in a commercial building on red hill avenue, triggering evacuations as flames spread to the back of the property. crews got the fire under control before it reached the homes nearby. ross valley fire tells us the neighbors defensible space made the difference. no word yet on how that fire started. well, happening today, there's a fundraiser for a popular oakland bookstore that was damaged in a fire. a gofundme has raised well over $200,000 for east bay booksellers on college avenue. gilman brewing in berkeley is hosting today's event, which will feature local authors. the bookstore's owner plans on using the money to pay employees and find a temporary location to reopen. well, today is the final

battle of the bay series between the giants and the a's. the a's are set to move to sacramento next season. abc seven news reporter anser hassan went to the coliseum and talked to fans about the importance of this matchup. reporter when a's pitcher michael martinez struck out the giants casey schmidt, it was game over. >> we did it. and one game closer to the end of a rivalry, to the end of an era. this is legacy coming to an end. >> and it's unfortunate all the way home. >> we own the bay. >> these giants fans say the loss was bittersweet. the giants lost the game, but the bay area is losing a franchise second round. >> it's kind of sad they're leaving. you know the raiders left. now the a's leave i don't know. the oakland a's two nothing win over the san francisco giants is the second to the last game in this weekend's battle of the bay series. >> i'm here for both. i want the giants to win, but the a's won late. >> the green bay. >> come on, baby. of the almost 150 games they've played, the a's now have a five game lead

after seven years. the walk ends at san francisco city hall tomorrow. and in the east bay, claremont middle school in oakland is celebrating a new addition to campus nearly a decade in the making. a grand opening was held for a new multi-purpose room, and it's a long awaited opening. a fire on campus severely damaged the old building, which housed the school cafeteria. that was nine years ago, and it's been a long time coming. >> the facility burned down in 2015, and it was just a small cafeteria at the time. and so we're really glad to see this reopen as a multi-purpose room with a gym, with a sound system, with a brand new kitchen. just a lot of features that are it's just such a beautiful building. >> the new multi-purpose room at claremont is the first major project to be completed, with funds from measure y that was approved by oakland voters in 2020. and today is the last day to see comic book, sci fi and fantasy characters on full display in san jose galaxy con wraps up later today, and it's

bringing large crowds to the convention center and just around the city to the popular fandom convention is being held here in the bay area city for the first time. it's a chance for fans to meet their favorite characters and pick up some intergalactic merch. doors open at 10 a.m. today, so soon, and william shatner is set to make his appearance later on. well, it was a lively night on the streets in san francisco's richmond district. hundreds turned out for the neighborhood's latest heart of the richmond district night market. the family friendly event offers food, live music, shopping a whole lot more. organizers and city leaders are counting on the night markets to help local businesses and boost community morale. >> it's been really successful and we've had like, big crowds come here enjoying local vendors that are from the richmond district, and we have local businesses such as maya, sikh noodles, uh- and many other businesses from clement street that are actually selling food here. >> last night was the third of four night markets in the richmond district. the final of the summer will take place on

september 21st. tens of thousands of music lovers descended upon golden gate park this weekend, one week after outside lands. this year, organizers are kicking off a new concert series in the park, as abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports, the hope is that there's more to come. >> reporter it's a double take at golden gate park. >> just one week after outside lands. music fans are flooding in. can't go wrong with anything. >> golden gate park and system of a down. >> you can't go wrong. system of a down and deftones headlining the inaugural golden gate park concerts. >> this is a pretty epic show. i'm a huge deftones fan. i've been a deftones fan and a system of a down fan for, well, since the early 90s. >> the one day sold out event, drawing in 50,000 fans from across the bay area and beyond. event organizers saying 90% of the audience is from outside san francisco. >> that means hotel rooms, restaurants, ubers, retail taxe,

all of that. >> san francisco recreation and parks says the concert simply makes sense. on the heels of a multi-day, multi-stage festival. >> why not? while we're taking down most of the infrastructure, leave enough for a single stage concert? oh, these are wonderful. >> i'm so happy this experience that we had the outside lands and this one amazing. >> and for these vendors, the move means more business. >> we see a lot of people that aren't able to come into the restaurant or brick and mortar, and they come here and they know us by our name. >> so it's been really cool. >> it's an extension of what we did on outside lands. it's also a different crowd. we're excited that it's in the main polo fields, in which we've been here for several years, and we're just really blessed and excited to be on the first time. >> and they're hoping to serve up even more next year. >> i think if we do it right and the crowd speaks for itself and we enjoy it, i think the city is ready to get a 2 or 3 day in this mix, you know, for next the second weekend. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> okay. take a look at this.

this is the t-rex derby at emerald downs in washington state. saturday's race had hundreds of dinosaurs taking part. there were four races. there's a kids race, men and women, and a dinosaur category for those advanced runners. >> oh. oh. dynamo go to your room. clean up your room. don't stay out late, little dino. dino kaiser got there first. it was dino kaiser. >> the event was started in 2017. get this as a local company's team building activit, and it has grown into an exciting annual tradition that somehow those people can see out of those costumes and run that fast. it's amazing. we actually have runners out here on the embarcadero. i was looking out the window earlier running for that ten k, five k, so let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen how the forecast is for them. and looking ahead. >> yeah we have some nice sun here this morning. so that's kind of a perk because yesterday with all the clouds it was humid. and then that rain finally came in parts of the north bay. so today we'll be reducing the relative humidity and allowing for a ridge to

build in to bring us a brief warm up. but the fog is going to stay at the golden gate bridge, where we have a little bit of mist and drizzle. so there's that system up in the pacific northwest that brought the thunderstorms and nearly an inch of rain in seattle. portland got a lot of rain and we just got the tail end of that. so as we go through the next several hours, it's going to be more sunshine and more typical for late august. there's the breeze from our roof camera and temperatures 13 degrees spread right now from 58 san francisco, 65. in oakland, it's 68 in hayward with 70. in san jose, low 60s redwood city. half moon bay has some fog as well as santa rosa. and that cool 57 up in santa rosa, 59 in petaluma with upper 60s. few in our inland valleys. the delta west wind at 14. and what a gorgeous sparkling view here from our exploratorium camera. so still some fog there from the north bay, increasing sunshine throughout the rest of the

morning. and then later on today you'll notice we're warmer, we're sunnier, and later on this week, much cooler conditions as another system is slated to move from the pacific northwest into extreme northern california. so we'll be watching that one closely. the fog not much left of it. you can see around the bay in the next hour. we've got some patches here, and then we're into a sunny afternoon. clouds at the coast will keep it cool, maybe partly cloudy at times for half moon bay, and then the fog quickly pushes across the bay again. but it's not going to last too long into your monday morning. it's going to pull back by about 9:00, and you'll notice once again getting hung up in parts of the east bay and south bay. but it's a warmer day for your monday and today you'll notice gently how the temperatures climb up through the 70s to just about the low 80s around pleasanton. this afternoon, and our inland valleys dropping off for a nice evening in the upper 70s. so really, the warmest numbers

is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken products over possible metal contamination. the recall includes 22 ounce bags of perdue and butcherbox organic chicken breast nuggets and 29 ounce bags of regular chicken breast tenders. a thin strand of metal wire was found during the manufacturing process. you definitely want to make sure you don't have those things. the chicken products were shipped to several food retailers across the country and sold online, but so far there are no reports of illness or injury. here at abc seven, we're all about building a better bay area, and it's been seven months since san mateo county declared loneliness a public health emergency. now, one italian restaurant on the peninsula is serving up a possible solution. abc seven news reporter lena howland has more on how it's bringing seniors and young people together. >> raise your hand if your stomach is growling with heaping trays of pasta, cheese covered garlic bread and a seemingly endless bowl of salad. >> oderzo is doing buffet lunch at his restaurant a little differently. >> this is a house. it's not a

>> and we are waiting for the flip side. >> protests are also expected to erupt throughout the city over the course of the convention. johnson says people's first amendment rights will be welcomed. the dnc kicks off monday with nearly 50,000 guests expected to attend. and new this morning, secretary of state antony blinken is set to arrive in israel to push for a cease fire and hostage deal in gaza. it's blinken's ninth trip to the region since the war began on october seventh. he is set to meet with israeli officials today, and prime minister benjamin netanyahu's office says he also met with negotiators recently. they say they're optimistic about reaching a ceasefire deal. former new york congressman george santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple counts in his federal fraud case. santos is scheduled to appear at a court hearing tomorrow on long island. the news comes weeks before jury selection for the case is set to begin. santos has previously pleaded not guilty to a range of financial crimes that includes lying to congress about his

wealth, collecting unemployment benefits while working, and using campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses. at least 23 people are hurt after a ferris wheel caught on fire in germany. it happened during the high field music festival last night. flames started on one gondola then spread to a second one. no one on the two gondolas where the fire started was no one was on those gondolas, and the condition of the people injured is not known. police are still trying to find out what caused the fire. and back here at home, police in the north bay are mourning one of their own. after she was killed in a crash by a suspected drunk driver. santa rosa police put out this picture of the crash yesterday. 31 year old jessica avila munoz was slammed into while driving near lombardi court in sebastopol road friday. police say the suspected drunk driver has four previous dui arrests and was driving on a suspended license. he's now in jail on suspicion suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony dui. munoz was a member of the sonoma county probation department.

police say she was picking up her 13 year old daughter from school when the crash happened. a gofundme has been created to help her family with funeral costs. when it comes to mental health, the number to know is 988. but many don't know that and officials in one bay area county want that to change. now there's a new campaign to help those in crisis. >> santa clara county crisis and suicide prevention hotline. >> since 2022, 988 has been the suicide and crisis lifeline, simplified from what many call the difficult to remember one 800 number. people are encouraged to call if they're experiencing thoughts of suicide, mental health related distress, worried about a loved one or need emotional support on the other. end of the line are staff and volunteers trained to help their mental health community workers so they have a background in behavioral health services. >> many of the volunteers have family members or themselves that have been involved with with mental health issues, so they come with a sensitivity. >> in its first year, the santa clara county crisis line

answered nearly 21,000 calls, 5% of them resulted in a field visit by one of its three mobile crisis units. >> despite these numbers, i am still finding that too many people don't know about 988. >> so they've announced a new campaign to spread the word and also share what's new since it first launched. >> text and chat is now a viable alternative to calling 988, and we have staff that have been trained in how to work within text and chat and it's beginning to pick up. so it is for spanish and english. >> the call option is still in place for more than 200 languages. and while santa clara county officials say it's 988, crisis line isn't getting as many calls as it can across the country. other centers have seen an influx. the substance abuse and mental health services administration said 40% more people have been helped since before the 988 hotlines. national launch, but abc news has reported that many centers have struggled to hire and retain staff to keep up. in santa clara county, officials said its team is ready to take on any more calls. this new

people understand how important this opportunity is to getting housing built in our community and that the timing was off. >> the bond would have raised funds through a surcharge on property tax bills and distributed those significant dollars to bay area counties based on their contributions, including big dollars to big cities. with 2 billion coming to san jose alone in the north bay. 2 billion would have been spread out among the four counties, and the other five counties would have gotten around 2 billion each, including 2.5 billion for santa clara county money. supervisor chavez says, could have gone a long way. we have 12,000 homes somewhere in the pipeline that are affordable, that just need a little bit more money to get over the finish line and get built. >> 12,000 so for us, this is a significant loss when the need for housing is top of mind as the state continues to clean up encampments and move homeless off the streets. >> why this vote? the commissioners say there is not enough support for the measure at this time. only 55% approval

pleasant, low 70s. so a nice day for baseball and yesterday's system that brought all the unusual weather to the bay area out of here. we are in between systems, from the trough to the north and west of us, to a ridge that will allow for a warming trend getting going today. but not here. we will have patchy low clouds continuing to cling to the coast in spots today. so it won't be totally cloudy everywhere. but more or less we're going to see partly to mostly cloudy skies here near 60, and even some mist and drizzle still fog up in the north bay in spots where it was pretty dense for a while. but elsewhere, that marine layer scattering out 58 downtown, 65 in oakland, 69 in hayward with 70 in san jose and low 60s half moon bay, there's a look at walnut creek. so from the bridge to our inland valleys, where we're going to have more warmth in some 80s arriving today, 62 santa rosa with low 60s in napa and upper 60s concord and livermore. nice and bright here downtown, looking at increasing

sunshine for pretty much everyone. and by this afternoon we're warmer. and that forecast is going to hold through tomorrow and tuesday. wednesday begins our cool down. and then it gets much cooler with temperatures below average by the end of the week. as another pretty robust system drops out of the pacific northwest. the sea breeze will be with us each and every day at about 2526 miles an hour. so that will allow for those winds to continue to dry. things out. so we will watch that because the system by the end of the week could bring some rain. it also could bring some lightning. also, this time of year things continue to get super dry right on through the fall. so those winds will do that as well as even though we're getting the cooler numbers at the end of the week, 82 in los gatos, 74 in milpitas today on the peninsula upper 70s there for redwood city with 74 in palo alto. so a partial sun at times along the coast. and we've got a near
