national convention in california will get its time in the spotlight tonight. good afternoon. i'm stephanie sierra. the dnc switches course today from a goodbye to president joe biden to an ushering in of a new era. it's happening now at the united center in chicago, where abc news reporter christiane cordero is live. with last night's highlights and a look ahead, christiane. >> hey there stephanie. good to be with you. so night one was really about giving president joe biden his flowers, right? and tonight, we expect the tone to shift a little bit and have these people be all in and we're expecting these people to be all in on harris. the theme for the night is a bold vision for america's future. today, the harris campaign is back on the road to nearby milwaukee. while at the dnc in chicago, surrogates rally support on their behalf. michigan governor gretchen whitmer telling fellow democrats, despite the enthusiasm for harris, now is not the time to be complacent. >> as excited as we are about

kamala harris and tim walz, the rest of the world is just trying to get through their day and so we cannot make any assumptions that this energy is enough. >> on night one of the convention, vice president harris surprised the packed house of supporters. but the night was largely about honoring the legacy of the man who stepped aside to endorse her. >> joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all. you will continue to do. >> tuesday's headliner, former president barack obama and michelle obama, who plan to turn the page from the vp who served in the obama administration to the current one, pushing the momentum to november. sources tell abc news they plan to affirm the harris wahls message of decency. they say, away from fear and division, the trump vance campaign is on the road across the midwest. vance in kenosha, a mere 40 miles from the harris walz rally. >> obviously, politically, wisconsin may be very well the most important state in the country come november.

>> trump, just outside of detroit, also holding an event on crime and safety. >> just about every law enforcement group in the country has endorsed us, as you probably have heard. and there's a reason for that, because i believe in law enforcement. the other group doesn't. >> now, another thing we expect to see tonight are these delegates casting their votes for a roll call here in the arena. now, of course, we know harris is already officially the party's nominee. that happened at a virtual roll call earlier this month. but tonight is purely ceremonial. but one thing to keep in mind, especially for californians, is there's a moment, even if ceremonial, where we're expecting governor gavin newsom to cast the votes, that would officially put her over the edge as the nominee. if this were actually happening. officially speaking, stephanie. >> yeah, time is ticking until that happens. former democratic national committee chair donna brazile said vice president harris will have to bring more voters in who see themselves living on the outskirts of hope.

california level, where again, you mentioned that vice president kamala harris co-founded our organization 20 years ago, and we have really felt the momentum shift, and we have been so thrilled that she's now at the top of our ticket. >> so let's talk more about emerge and its bay area connection. can you first explain to our viewers the organization's mission? >> sure. we are the premier organization that recruits and trains democratic women to run for office and win. we have affiliates all over the country. you mentioned emerge california as one of them, but we have over 27 state affiliates, and we have had an impact in 45 states. and territories. again, you mentioned we've been around for 20 years, and that came from a mission of seeing that there was a dearth of an organization or a program that trained women to run and win their campaigns. and so vice president kamala harris, along with a group of her
3:13 pm
closest allies, were able to put together this organization that hit the ground running in the early 2000. and with her inner circle, she created this program. and that is exactly what they created. emerge to do is to create this. this bench, this uh, this path for women to be able to step up and lead just like she has. and we have a mission to lift as you climb to change the representation of this country, to level the playing field and to get as many women empowered as possible. >> and we know emerge, as you pointed out, are women at leading at all levels of government, from school boards and city councils to governor's offices and congress. can you give us insight into the success rate thus far? >> yes. thank you for asking. we have had an incredible success rate in the 20 years since our inception. in those 20 years, we have trained over 6000 women across the country. 1200 of them
3:14 pm
currently sit in public office right now. last year we had a success rate of 74%. so that means up and down the ballot, 74% of the women that were on their ballot won their races. and this fall, we have over 600 women on the ballot across the country at every level of government, from congress, all the way down to the local level. and now we see our our own original emerge woman, our og kamala harris, at the top of the ticket. so we're hoping to break the hardest of glass ceilings, the that concrete ceiling this time around with her and part of attaining those numbers numbers, might i add, that continue growing. >> you have a training program and a recommendation line. can you walk us through what those programs offer? >> sure. so we have several training programs. there is our signature program, the one we originally started with is our six month comprehensive training
3:15 pm
program. we have executive directors in our state, affiliates across the country, where they will recruit women that they think are good for the program. there's also an application process you can find all of that out on our website. and we've sort of pivoted to other programs as well. for instance, we have our step forward program, which introduces women who maybe even interested in running for office but aren't sure and sort of gives them different avenues in which they could access that. and then we have our gavel in program, which trains women who are interested in becoming judges. we have our seated together program, which is our new program where we're training women who uh- black women who already sit in office and train them to sort of attain higher office from their current positions. so there's different emerge programs. there's something for everybody. but if you're a woman and you're
3:16 pm
interested in stepping up in leadership in any capacity, we welcome you to take a look at what we can offer. >> thank you for sharing that. now, you talked about breaking glass ceilings a moment ago. i want to talk about vice president kamala harris, the og, as you described. she's making history again as the first black and south asian woman poised to assume this democratic party nomination. now, what do you and your female colleagues want to hear from harris this week? >> my goodness, i think that she has again, just shifted the momentum so much in terms of how inspired we have been in the past four weeks. we are over the moon for her. we want to hear about unity. we want to hear about how she is the candidate that cares about americans and her opponent only cares about himself. and we want to hear about ways that we can come together as a country and unite. there's been such a rift in the way that we've navigated politics in the past eight
3:17 pm
years, and we really want to hear about how we can heal, how we can move forward and progress, and how she can inspire so many women and little girls to grow up and really step into, you know, her, her shoes and what she's able to accomplish. because if you can see it, you can believe it. and so now across the country, little girls are going to be looking at their screens and they're going to be like, if she can do it, i can do it. and so we just feel our hearts are just so full in this moment. and we all feel that that that sense of responsibility, almost like we need to live up to this moment. >> certainly a lot of excitement this week and leading up to the november election. diane, thank you so much for your time today. thank you. absolutely. well, you can watch live coverage of the democratic national convention right here on abc seven starting at 7:00 tonight. that's followed by back to back episodes of
